[The progressives’ inability to think logically, or even coherently, is on parade again across the nation. ICE officers arresting illegal aliens may not wear face coverings to hide their personal identity (their official identity is visible from their uniforms, labeled jackets/vests, and badges) to prevent terrorists’ doxing their residences thereby threatening their families. But it’s OK for leftwingers to support obvious criminals to wear identity-concealing face coverings as they riot, pillage, and burn while attacking law enforcement officers on the streets of America’s cities. gjr]

“first they came for the immigrants…”
Actually illegals, but the Dems just can’t say the word after their 4 years of “no one is above the law”.
Turns out millions are not expected to obey the law.
When the Dems were in power they were happy to use the FBI, CIA, and the IRS to go after law-abiding conservatives. Because NAZI, HITLER, NAZI, HITLER…

Re ScottO’s 1028am – RR has been a yearslong broken record on the atrocious misuse of ‘immigrant’ to describe/label illegal aliens. For the well-read among us, it makes our neck hairs stand up; for America’s double dummies all immigrants are alike and sanctified as citizens-in-waiting by the “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”, which they believe is the country’s codified immigration policy. On that account Terry Lamphier is among those on the lowest rung of the ladder.

Don’t much care what Emma Lazarus had to say. The real measure is whether US citizens benefit from infinite immigration or not. (answer: no)

I agree this is not our “codified immigration policy” but instead it is our cultural heritage to believe that. Why else would it be displayed with the Statue of Liberty. Also shouldn’t those who have displayed a history of responsibility by doing meaningful work and not having a criminal record for years while raising a family be given a chance to attain citizenship?
My grandparents came here before WW1, raised a family and lived here over 50 years without becoming “citizens” and they never had the threat of being hauled off to a prison camp in a foreign country. My Grandmother never became a citizen but my Grandfather finally did at the age of 76.
Yes, they yearned to “breathe free” which they did and were accepted into American culture.
Whats the difference between then and today?

Oh my!! I’m sooo ashamed because Paul claims I’m a “cold-hearted person”.
Because I care about those who followed the rules and waited and put in the time and effort and money to enter legally while scofflaws cut in line and scooped up free goodies and jobs while the law abiders had to stand by and watch.
Because I cared about the children being trafficked for sex while the Biden admin aided the effort by winking at the cartels bringing them in.
Because I cared about the women in our country being needlessly raped and murdered and who knows how many people injured and killed by illegals driving on the road.
Yeah Paul – I’m soooo cold-hearted.
I do feel sorry for the children whose parent/s decided to screw up their lives by entering and/or staying on illegally. But that’s exactly what happens to all children whose parents break any other law.
We are a nation of laws – deal with it.

PaulE 229pm – The difference is that they came legally at a time when we needed more productive workers and in numbers that did not threaten to exacerbate our current multi-cultural schisms. So did I and my family.
Why is it that you leftists have the cognitive deficit that prevents you from discriminating between immigrants and illegal entrants?? That shortcoming makes impossible all reasonable discussions on the subject between the two sides.

psul: “I agree this is not our “codified immigration policy” but instead it is our cultural heritage to believe that.”
The E. Lazarus (who was a proto-Zionist of all things) poem was written in the late 1880s?
I present the total immigration for a few years:
1932 – 35k
1933 – 23k
1934 – 29k
Interestingly, what a lot of people think of as the most prosperous years, through let’s say 1950-1980, had the lowest immigration percentage (6-7%). After that, it cranks way up.
This leaves out the issues of just where your immigrants come from. Far be it from me to suggest that the Swiss are a better choice than Somalians.
I just assume that ‘immigration’ is similar to all the other Democratic policies built on non-enforcement. Shoplifting? legal. Live in a tent downtown? legal. Sneak over the border? legal. Send billions and billions to your friends via USAID? legal. Invent Russian collusion as an anti-Trump measure? legal.

Dunno what heart temperature has to do with it.
It’s more a matter of whether you look after your countrymen or foreign nationals. Really, that famous chart showing how ‘progressives’ favor people the less related they are explains everything. I genuinely wonder what peculiarity in brain chemistry explains that.
At least the jillion of immigrants who want to bring in more people like themselves are acting in a sane fashion, even if it’s to our disbenefit. That little piece of magic happens in large tech companies every day.

Can you imagine the chaos that would result if suddenly all of the workers that are illegal immigrants were suddenly be removed from the workforce? Ask the farmers ask the hospitality providers as examples of those who depend on them for their workforce. Can you immagine farmers hiring young white guys to work in their fields? what do you recommend we could do to replace them?

Let me guess…this was for George.
I try and imagine young Paul Raymond being hired for this sort of work….and no, you’re right…..the whining would have been intolerable…..“You want me to what?…..That’s like effort Maaann”
Nevertheless….in 2020 the farmers largely had enough illegal labor to service crops, the construction industry had enough illegal labor to displace the native born from jobs that they used to be able to live on, and the “hospitality” industry had an ample supply of busboys! Most importantly Jeff Pelline never needed to come within 50 ft of a lawnmower…..! Then the Brainstem Administration decided it was time to import a permanent electoral majority by throwing the doors open to any Third Worlder with shoes sufficient to the task of walking here. Cheap labor, an enlarged captive market, and a dilution of the existing citizenry…..from a politicians perspective what’s not to like!
You fucked up Paul Raymond…..you let people see the endless armies entering the country. Fifteen million…with all the attendant crime and other social pathologies that dumping them here entails!
Go away! You are clearly not smart enough to participate in this discussion!

Obviously the result, if enough leave the country, is increasing the income for farm work combined with automation.
Maybe Cesar Chavez’ concept of no illegals and higher pay would happen.
One thing worth mentioning is that the labor content of produce is so low that doubling the wages doesn’t result in much of a shift in retail prices. Also, most of the change you’d see would be in job availability for skilled and semi-skilled construction and the like.
In any case, I’ve heard all of psul’s objections from other people and largely reject them. No point in listening to someone just repeating this stuff mindlessly. It’s all just a Ponzi scheme of importing moar and moar low wage people on public assistance of some sort as it’s unlikely their children will pick fruit.
One thing I did run into, mentioned before?, is this.
“Farmers fuming over California’s ban on driverless tractors, other robots
A robot revolution is expanding to farmlands all across America, but in California – where autonomous technology has largely been developed – farmers aren’t legally allowed to harness the tech’s full potential in their own agricultural equipment.”
https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/autonomous-farming-agriculture-equipment-california/3878319/
Of course, when you live somewhere run by a crazy-grifty Democratic single-party ruling class, the results will be odd. Like the train-to-nowhere, the money always ends up in the wrong hands.

Obviously, if the new surge towards sanity continues, they’ll unwind the immigration disaster at roughly the rate it occurred. The psulbot will continue to breathlessly repeat the occasional headline gleaned somewhere. The Earth Abides.
” had the tumerity”
I had to think about that a minute as that’s a made-up word, perhaps involving ‘turmeric’ or ‘tummy’.
It’s hard to avoid the fact that a lot of economics numbers were ginned up to help the Biden campaign. Whether it swings the other way remains to be seen. Maybe a quant at a big brokerage house could tell us if the gubmint numbers are even paid attention to. I think it all circles around the mostly-false concept that the economy can be managed, or even predicted in the long run.

PaulE 944pm – The lamestream has been pushing the instant disappearance of illegal alien workers for some time now in making their case for unconditional amnesty, unrestricted voting, and finally citizenship. The instant disappearance scenario is accepted only by the most dimwitted in our land; but then again, there are tens of millions of them. Apparently you have joined their ranks as witnessed by the latest of several comments you have made in recent months. No one believes that such an instant workforce reduction (similar to the Christian rapture) will happen. Those otherwise law-abiding and hard working illegals here for years will be subject to some type of accommodation that let’s them stay. But that will take some time and planning to find a solution that does not immediately reignite an assault by millions on our borders.

What is this obsession about Leonard Cohen music all about? That’s really goofy. I’ve been a musician all my life along with other things. I was even played for the Queen of England when she came to Sacramento in 1983. Then Governor Deukmejian personally invited us to play.

Paul thinks the farmers are worried about all the illegals picking their crops will “suddenly” be removed.
Nope – don’t think so.
I think they are concerned that “some” farmers will have raids by ICE while other farmers will not.
The main problem the farmers face is that what they will have to pay will go up against what the govt will pay able bodied adults to not work.
In the depression whites were eager to work the fields. Of course the CA farmers made sure that there ended up being way more able workers than the work available. No need to pay a decent wage.
Of course we could try having a free market, but no.

Everyone needs to excuse psul for mentioning something that happened 40+ years ago over and over. It’s in the nature of musicians to mention that one prominent person they played with or for as a kind of resume item. It’s like that time that Wynton Marsalis played in the area and everyone got a piece of that that they shilled over and over. It’s simply the nature of the business. Musical skills are more common than you’d think and it’s all about marketing. You should see how little side men for well-known acts can make.

So what you are saying George is we will continue to depend on illegal workers for our agricultural and restaurant workforce but they will be subject to being nabbed at any time and sent to a storage facility somewhere in the world such as Salvador.
The U.S. Center for Migration Studies estimates that there are approximately one million undocumented immigrants working in the restaurant industry today, many of whom could be targeted by these rapidly shifting federal policies.
