I am distraught and shaken at the news of what President Trump is planning for ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.  It’s taken a few days for me to gather the gumption to get my thoughts down for the record.  Readers know that as the best of available alternatives I have supported Trump’s candidacies and general policies through three elections.  My support has been interleaved with generous dollops of criticisms, especially when he has shot from the lip and acted like a third-grader throwing a tantrum on the playground.  But now in power, he has really shown a new side of himself in the foreign policy arena – he is acting as if he’s never studied history and knows nothing about how international thugs and dictators (especially of the communist stripe) respond to opposing their atrocities.

Putin is a low-life, rank-and-file KGB agent who struck it rich in Russia’s chaotic aftermath during the collapse of the USSR.  To view him as anything other than a murderous thug and liar is to embark on the wrong course regarding any dealings with him.  To that we must add his newfound embrace of becoming the self-aggrandized heroic figure who will reconstitute the old Communist empire and return Russia to its never-was glory days.

It boggles the mind to discover why Trump set up the meetings with Russia and excluded Ukraine’s president Zelensky from the undertakings.  Last time I looked, the war was between Russia and the Ukraine with America and the allies providing war materiel support on an unreliable schedule that so far has favored Putin.  It is Zelensky who has used every legal means (according to Ukraine’s constitution) to administer the state and conduct a decidedly one-sided war to save his country from a criminal invasion and conquest.

And in response Trump not only excludes Zelensky from the negotiations, but gratuitously attacks him personally for no apparent reason, culminating with the patently absurd lie that Ukraine started the war.  Putin and Lavrov are laughing their collective asses off watching Trump go off the rails.  Any C- student of history knows that Moscow’s thugs are playing for time with all the cards stacked in their favor viz no return of conquered Ukrainian territories and Ukraine permanently banned from NATO.  What in hell is there left for the west to negotiate?

Having successfully expanded Russia’s boundaries through bullshit negotiations with the west, Putin will just wait for the next opportunity to again invade convenient neighbors, be it the Baltics, or the rest of Ukraine, or … .  And, of course, China is watching Trump’s screw-ups with keen interest as it prepares for its next moves on Taiwan.

The best source of Trump’s wrong thinking that I can muster is his proudly claimed expertise as a New York real estate negotiator.  Trump, like most western business people, has grown up in the belief that capitalism under liberal governments provides ideal environments for win-win negotiations and deals.  However, the deep-rooted culture of most of the rest of the world, especially Slavic Russia, is that the fundamental nature of negotiations and resulting deals is a zero-sum game – if he’s winning, I must be losing, and vice versa.

So now Trump is trying to engineer a laudable win-win outcome with Putin and present the results, take it or leave it, to Zelensky.  There is absolutely zero chance of that happening.  Putin’s political AND personal survival depends on his being able to continue reconstituting Mother Russia to at least its czarist days.  If he fails in this endeavor, they may not even hold a state funeral for him.

Oi Weh!

Putin will be deposed if he doesn’t conquer Finland, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, etc.?
I’ll take that bet any day of the week.

Yeah…..let’s go bankrupt faster so Satan Jr. can triumph over Satan!
You’ve truly become an American George….you think we can save the world with our checkbook in places we have no business being in the first place.
Nobody fears us! Nobody respects us! We can’t even secure the US proper but we’ll throw billions at Tiny Grifter so he can keep siphoning off millions for himself and his greasy coterie in a war he could never have won in the first place!
4.7 trillion dollars missing and your local rag is whining that a park ranger was let go! It’s no wonder the US is well and truly dead!

George, from the Bray and Cluck show earlier today, apparently Zelensky lied to Putin about his chats with the US before he was cut out of the negotiations. If true, not having a seat at the table is to be expected.
We don’t know what is being said. Better to wait for results.

Gregory 159pm – Hadn’t heard about Zelensky’s lie. But I agree that we should wait; we have no other alternatives. Tonight on the news Trump was already backpedaling his meeting with Putin, inviting/urging Zelensky and PUtin to meet, and withdrawing his blame on Ukraine for starting the war.

As far as what I remember – Trump said he wanted to end the war and stop the killing. I don’t ever remember him saying anything about defeating Putin. What would that entail, anyway? Putin is a bad guy backed up by enough of his citizens to be willing to slaughter a shit pile of his own people so he can crow about regaining a part of what is Mother Russia.
It’s obvious he made a huge mistake as to how much Ukraine would resist. Here we are. The rest of NATO stands around yelling and waving their hands. They’re right next to worthless. The US has proven itself capable of a huge amount of destruction to others resulting in one loss after another for us.
As far as leaving Mr Z out in the cold – why is that a surprise? He knows all about the deals with Hunter and the crooked deals with Biden’s crime family. Maybe he should have fessed up all that after the election in November. Of course that would be an admission he was in on the deal and make him look bad. Maybe his wife shouldn’t have gone shopping in London while he was pleading for money from US tax payers. Maybe he should have volunteered an accounting of everything we sent him.
The losers are the citizens of Russia and Ukraine and I feel bad for them, but there are millions of others in this big bad world that are dealing with worse.
You want to show how much of a hero you are? Go up against Emperor Xi and slap him down for the way he is treating his own people as well as the atrocities against the Uyghurs – he’s got thousands of them in slave camps picking cotton! Sound familiar?
And there’s the Copts in southern Egypt and the sub-equatorial Africans being raided for young girls for the sex slave trade. And I could go on and on.
So – why Ukraine? With all the bad stuff going on in the world what’s the deal with Ukraine? Russia isn’t one tenth the threat to us that China is. We are broke. And we can’t relive WWII. Maybe next time don’t signal weakness like Biden and Company did. Maybe next time bulk up and show we are getting our financial house in order and we can start to afford to guns as well as butter.

It ranks somewhere between Nigeria and Mexico I think in terms of importance to the US. My working theory is that no anti-immigration party will be allowed to take power regardless of the votes, but that’s just purest non-involved guessing.

Some EU countries do not want to spend money on the defense of Europe, e.g. Hungary and Slavakia. On the one hand they want to be on good terms with Russia, on the other hand they don’t want to do without the money the EU gives them. This is very regrettable and a shortcoming of the EU.
Incidentally, our welfare state is not bankrupt! There is still enough support for everyone! It is populism when individual political parties say so. There is also no lack of security! Hatred and agitation spread this view. Like the USA, Germany also needs migrants. The hatred of migrants and attacks on them come primarily from citizens of the former GDR. People there are jealous and dissatisfied that the citizens who have lived in West Germany since 1945 are supposedly better off. “GDR” citizens did not pay into our pension system before 1989. Nevertheless, the former West Germany pays them the pension they are entitled to today. The whole of East Germany has been renovated by the West and provided with the best infrastructure. The West was even left behind in some cases. When the Wall came down, we found a run-down country. It looked similar to pictures of Cuba today. It is clear that there were also injustices. But the Easterners are much better off today than they were at the time of Russian influence (Warsaw Pact). And yet there is great dissatisfaction there and parts of the population seem to long for a return to Russian leadership. We don’t understand why. The biggest threat to Germany’s democracy today is the AFD, a partly secured right-wing extremist, radical party. The rest of the party is being monitored by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. This party spreads hatred and incites those who think differently and talks about the remigration of all non-Germans and those Germans who don’t fit into the system.
And what a shame: Musk and Vance spoke with the party’s candidate for chancellor, Ms. Weidel. Musk praised this party and Vance recommended voting for this party in his speech at the Munich Security Conference. Do they even know who they are recommending? Never again do we want to have to put up with right-wing extremist parties! Vance said in Munich that there is no more freedom of speech in Germany. That’s a lie! You can say anything here. We are still free! Musk said in the video call with Weidel that only her party could save Germany. What nonsense.
Incidentally, we heard that US officials were threatening to stop providing Starlink to Ukraine if they denied them 50% of their natural resources.
What will become of the USA under the Trump/Musk administration? A so-called rogue state?

    lol. Of course you did.
“US threatens to shut off Starlink if Ukraine won’t sign minerals deal, sources tell Reuters.
The U.S. first raised the prospect of shutting off Starlink service after Zelensky rejected the deal presented on Feb. 12.”
    – Kyiv Independent
“This is false. Reuters is lying. They are second only to AP (Associated Propaganda) as legacy news liars.”

    – Elon Musk

Here’s the deal, and it’s true for practically anyone.
It’s hard to have an accurate opinion by talking to like-minded friends and looking at a porthole to the world via a laptop screen, even if ‘sources’ did tell Reuters. It’s really all just primates telling stories to each other.
Personally, given the fact that Germany has attacked the rest of Europe twice, I guess it’s not such a bad thing that unlimited immigration occurs there. So, perhaps our interests are aligned, it’s hard to say… until the future occurs.

Somebody asked Grok to write the weekly memo as a federal government employee explaining what they did…
“Subject: Weekly Update from Your Favorite Bureaucrat
    Dear Elon,
Hey, it’s me, your friendly GS-15 paper-pusher over here at the Department of Education. Thought I’d dazzle you with my whirlwind of a week since I know you’re probably dying to hear about it.
Monday kicked off with a bang—three hours of staring at my inbox, deleting spam, and sipping burnt coffee from the break room. Real productivity booster. Tuesday, I shuffled some papers around on my desk to look busy during a team meeting I didn’t prep for. Nailed it. Wednesday was peak performance: I forwarded an email to someone else to deal with. Delegation is leadership, right?
Thursday, I spent a solid chunk of time googling “Tesla stock” and wondering why I’m not rich yet. Didn’t find any answers, but I did take a long lunch. Friday—today, technically, since it’s Saturday now but who’s counting—I drafted this email, which is honestly the most I’ve accomplished all week. Oh, and I filed a form to request more toner for the printer nobody uses. Heroic stuff.
Anyway, that’s the glamorous life of a federal employee. Keep making cool stuff so I have something to daydream about while I’m avoiding work. Hope you’re enjoying Mars or wherever you’re at these days.
    Cheers,

They burned down the house on the way out –
“Well, I’ve got some new polling coming out Monday that I’ve just looked at, and frankly, the Democratic Party has fallen off a cliff.” He continued:
The ratings, which were in the high 40s, are going to be like 35%. And I think the basic question is, who’s doing a better job as President Biden or Trump? Trump is winning that with 57%. I think you’re seeing a retrospective assessment of Biden and the direction the Democratic Party was going, and really a lot more negative than it was on Election Day.
And they’re looking at the contrast on immigration, on economic policy, on some of the social policies. And boy, they’re reevaluating in the Democratic Party. I have never seen anything like this. This is a record low for the Democratic Party in terms of favorability. It has fallen really, really way down. And I don’t think there’s any leadership right now that’s going to be able to bring that back.
