Well, that was a nothing burger that Trump delivered last night on ABC’s presidential debate stage.  Kamala Harris came across unbelievably polished, strong, and on message, while Trump treated the whole thing as another stump speech in the late afternoon after a couple of martinis.  Make no mistake that Kamala’s copy was totally BS and full of her now well-practiced big lies, but she delivered it all flawlessly, with clear strong voice and gestures to match, as if she were reading it from a teleprompter.  Whatever they taught her in that hotel room over the weekend worked.

Trump did his best (I think) to maintain a presidential demeanor, but 1) he still couldn’t control his mouth, and 2) he forgot to bring up key points or brought them up in brief fly-bys – e.g. ‘You flip-flopped on all these key issues over the last month, tell the American people how your values allow you to be so two-faced; what are we to believe?’ and ‘And how can you lie that the border was secure while over 15 million illegal aliens were coming across and being released into our country?’

The ABC talking heads running the debate were clearly in the tank for Kamala.  They let her side-step every question on hard issues with no follow-ups.  Trump received the other end of the stick from the interrogators with at least two gotcha questions thrown in.  For him and those of us who support his candidacy it was a bad day at Black Rock.  The road to November will be a rough one, and then … .

Isn’t MAGA the opposite of Progressive?
But Republicans are not all MAGA, some are reasonable, center right types just as there are center left Democrats.

Progress is defined as moving toward a destination.
The destination is perfection, and since perfection can never be achieved, progress continues indefinitely.

Interesting thoughts. I am very curious as to what your idea of this perfection looks like. The premise that we should progress towards an admittedly unattainable destination is intriguing. Please enlighten us all what this utopian society looks like towards which we should progress knowing the destination in unattainable. 🤔

Those pesky facts are spoiling the narrative –
Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said in a Wednesday appearance on CNBC, “So, that report, which was mentioned last night in the debate, came from an independent analyst, and it’s interesting, Scott, I think a lot more has been made of this than should be.”
“What the report did is it looked at a handful of policy issues that have been put out by both sides, and it tried to model their impact on GDP growth,” Solomon explained. “The reason I say a bigger deal has been made of it is what it showed is the difference between the sets of policies that they’ve put forward is about two-tenths of 1%.”

This is what I am taking about. People will be appalled at secret scope failures but should be more appalled at DHS failing to be honest and not disclosing records to Congress about Trumps assassination attempt. So says very partisan Senator Blumenthal (D-CT). The government people can’t do anything right. I hope that they have not done this crap to our military too. https://www.foxnews.com/video/6361888575112

Nate Silver says no debate bounce for the hyena, still strongly favors a Trump victoy –
According to Silver’s aggregate of national polling, Harris is leading Trump 48.7 percent to 46.8 percent on average. But Silver’s model still gives Trump a higher chance of winning the necessary 270 Electoral College votes in November, with the former president projected to take critical battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and North Carolina. The other closely watched swing states this fall, Wisconsin and Michigan, are a toss-up, according to Silver’s predictions.
Silver’s model did give Harris a slight boost to her chances of winning after Tuesday’s debate. But as of Thursday, the pollster projects Trump has a 60.6 percent chance of victory, while Harris has 39.2 percent.

If you think about it for a minute Barry, the Republicans are very progressive also. Their ultimate goal is just different, not necessarily better or worse, just a notion as to how an ideal society functions and behaves under a certain set of norms.

Rhetoric 726am – Yes, both the Left and Right pursue ideology driven diametrically opposite social orders – the Left collectivism (neo-Marsixt socialism) the Right free market capitalism. The two are in no way equivalent. Collectivism has never worked where it has been implemented to various degrees; it violates principles of both science and human behavioral norms (as presented here in detail for 15 years). Capitalism sans corporatism has proven to be a global blessing to mankind, lifting billions out of terminal poverty and disease. The evidence is available to all.

Eulo 942am – This is embarrassing Mr Eulo. Were you not so intellectually sheltered and more widely read, you would have instantly recognized my 859am response as a description of the classic tension between capitalism and collectivism disputed on the world stage since Karl Marx (or according to some, since the French Revolution), and not some narrowly held belief by a conservative Bible thumper minority. Adam Smith, de Tocqueville, and Bastiat wrote extensively of collectivism’s portents even before Marx. Today you and your ilk, educated in leftwing unionized public schools and socialist academe, and bathed daily in the carefully curated tripe of progressive media, are constantly surprised (enraged?) that there is a vast history of human affairs that has been denied to you and yours.

Collectivism can only work in a society that completely shares a common ideology. In very small groups it can work at times. Even small collective groups fracture based on divergent ideology and become extremely violent. Those who do not or no longer share the ideology that binds the collective are usually murdered in the end. Not only does the 20th century clearly demonstrate this conclusion, but these types of collective societies killed millions in Europe since the dawn of man. Collectivism is the opposite of progress as we need to stay clear and far from ideological collectivism.

BarryP 1215pm – Agreed and long argued in these pages – collectivism works best at the immediate family level and begins to disintegrate social orders that start expanding from the family. Garrett Hardin connected such disintegration to the emergence of the tragedy of the commons in groups whose members have less reason to act altruistically toward each other.
Gregory 130pm – I am not disputing your assertion about Locke being an ideological progenitor of Bastiat. Not saying that aren’t any, but unfortunately I’m having a hard time finding any reference or citation of Locke that substantiates. Can you help in my continuing education?
For readers seeking a greater understanding of the fathers of classical liberalism, I recommend the anthology ‘On Government’ by John Locke, David Hume, James Mill, and Frédéric Bastiat (Illustrated Kindle Edition). Amazon practically gives it away.

The White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) has written a letter stating that the vice president’s campaign hasn’t created the space for the same number of photographer’s who traveled with President Biden.
In an “unprecedented reduction in access” according to the letter, they claim that Harris has reduced the number of journalists from 13, to nine.
The letter also claims that the reduction in their numbers affected the news reporters, whose ranks in the White House press travel pool fell from four to one.

Kamala Harris First Solo Interview with Local Pennsylvania Reporter Turns into Disaster
When asked what she understands former President Donald Trump’s “appeal to be and how do you speak to his voters [about it],” Harris delivered a word salad and did not answer the question directly.
“I, based on experience and and a lived experience, know in my heart, I know in my soul, I know that the vast majority of us as Americans have so much more in common than what separates us,” she rambled. “And I also believe that I am accurate in knowing that most Americans want a leader who brings us together as Americans, and not someone who professes to be a leader who is trying to have us point our fingers at each other.”
“Let’s bring everybody together,” she said.
Harris lastly said she wants to ban guns. “I feel very strongly that it is consistent with the second amendment and your right to own a gun to say that we need an assault weapons ban,” she said. “They’re literally tools of war.”

Gregory 354pm – I try not to confuse ‘influenced by’ someone with ‘first introduced’ a thesis. Were we to give these equivalence, then why stop with Locke since he too was influenced by his forebears? Yes, Bastiat was influenced by Locke. But each of my three (and there were others) introduced a new aspect in comparing collectivism with free market capitalism. Among other attributes, Bastiat introduced the important economic concept of opportunity cost in the misallocation of resources in a free market economy.

Part of Kamala Harris’ game plan, or “what should be her game plan,” doesn’t “appear to be working out so well,” frets The Liberal Patriot’s Ruy Teixeira: It’s “the need to boost support among the working class, which remains a serious weak spot for the Democrats and Harris.” “Harris, relative to Biden in 2020, is doing 10 points worse among white working-class voters and 18 points worse among nonwhite working-class voters.” “There’s no sugarcoating it — this is a serious problem for the Democrats.”
