Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.  As of tonight, our weak and incompetent president has done nothing to deter Putin from re-establishing dominion over Russia’s “near abroad”.  The Biden administration’s much-touted ‘prompt and severe’ sanctions are clearly neither, as they are revealed to be low-grade-ore that even now hang fire.  Contrary to the administration’s abysmally ignorant and hesitant assessment of Putin’s strategy, the Russian president’s image as the post-Stalinist incarnation of Russia’s next strong-man leader continues to grow in the eyes of his adoring people, and also in the calculations of the growing cohort of our geo-strategic enemies led by China and Iran.  We are still looking for that single thing that President Biden has accomplished for the benefit of the United States and its citizens.  Unchallenged, he solidly occupies one of the historical performance bookends of our presidency.

[23feb22 update] Many in the West saw the end of the Cold War as proof that free markets and the rule of law were universal values. When the EU began admitting eastern European and Baltic states, a few of its officials thought this was not a geopolitical ploy aimed at Russia but the product of “inevitable globalization,” said Adam Tooze, a historian at Columbia University.  Eastern Europeans didn’t share that view. Mr. Tooze said  accession to the EU, like NATO, was “a way of securing themselves against Russia, full stop,” while Russia similarly “refused to see NATO and the EU as separate entities.” He said the EU may be a bigger threat because while Russia can compete militarily with NATO, it can’t compete with the social, cultural and economic appeal of Europe. … Economic integration didn’t make Russia or China more liberal; they doubled down on autocracy and state capitalism.  (more here)

[24feb22 update]  It appears that the west’s day-late and dollar-short sanctions, advertised for weeks by Team Biden as a “deterrent” to Russian invasion, have gone over like a warm bucket of spit.  Today even Bumblebrain was forced to admit to the world that his invasion deterrent won’t kick in until about four weeks after the Russian invasion started.  That is an excellent example of this idiot’s ‘foreign policy expertise’, much vaunted by Democrats during the 2020 election campaign.  Every day continues to pour in more evidence that this administration, in its entirety, has no idea what are America’s interests and how to marshal the west to resist Putin, and Xi waiting in the wings.  Our front line offense seems to consist of cancelling the credit cards belonging to the kids of Russian oligarchs, and then threatening to really get tough and cancel their debit cards.  That should get Putin to order his armor out of the Ukraine and send in Russian contractors to fix the Ukrainian buildings that got damaged in the last 48 hours.  Then again, maybe not.

“The Russians are not.” (fighting for their life and survival)
In a sense, I would guess that the Russian rulers are. They really can’t afford to lose this and will do what it takes. So far as I could tell this morning, little of the Russian Army had actually crossed the start line yet.
Trying to grok the whole deal, I was amazed how little real information there was. The blown-up guys on the island and the guy on the bridge are natural stories to tell but aren’t informative. The quality of analysis is poor, maybe it’s just good operational security, or I’m expecting too much. Naturally, the presentation strategy is of a giant pro sports event with dead people.
Probably the thing to do is take a week off from it all and check-in at that point. Ten second videos of an APC trundling by on some anonymous road is the order of the day for now.

What ever happens in Ukraine we shouldn’t underestimate the fact the United States has retaken the adult chair in the world. Biden has restored American leadership so damaged by Trump. The world needs us and we have a President who can and does lead.

Wonder what job Joe is sucking up for in the Biden administration?

‘An Unserious People Confront a Serious Man’
“On Dec. 5, 1989, Putin was running a KGB office for the Soviet Union in Dresden, Germany. The Berlin Wall had fallen, and East German mobs were ransacking Stasi headquarters. They came for the KGB in Dresden. Putin called out to the approaching mob that he and his men would open fire. The mob held off. Putin called a Soviet military unit for help. The military could not come, reported the general, because “Moscow is silent.” It was a defining moment for Putin. He has prepared for years and now Moscow will no longer be silent.

Stinger missiles: While watching short footage clips of Russian helicopters buzzing over Ukrainian villages on their way to more strategic locales and all this talk about Javelin missiles, the thing that has been gnawing at me big time since Invasion Day One is where are the stinger missiles???? That would knock those twirly birds out of the sky
When the USSR invaded Afghanistan, we armed the mujahideen with Stinger missiles. Snuck them it via the Parisian tribal regions. What is missing is where are the Stinger missiles????
Answer. They are being supplied to the Ukrainians by Estonia. Good job, Estonia. Kudos to Dr. Rebane and the Estonian Fox’s tribe.

    re: BillT@8:38AM
You know, I was musing about that for some time.
Besides the sheer fun of destruction, or using a third party as a proxy army in a virtual war, what is the desirable result from arming either the Afghanis or Ukrainians at this point? I can certainly list downside risks.
As a dissuader, I can see putting together a fairly invincible civic defense system (and hope that bedroom communities on I-80 don’t invade the foothills for control of watersheds). It’s never a 100% answer as Switzerland found out from Napoleon and probably would have from Operation Tannenbaum, but handing out nukes to everyone probably isn’t a good Plan B. As fuel on the fire, the results are less obvious.
I admit that if I ran the FSB and a whole bunch of NATO-brand handheld surface-air missiles made an appearance, the temptation would be high to ship a whole bunch of them to revolutionary movements throughout the West. Even the threat causes commercial airplanes to become a thing of the past.

The mobile crematorium has been seen among the Russian troops that, led by President Vladimir Putin, continue their advance onto the neighbor country, The Telegraph reported and Fox News has confirmed.
Ben Wallace, the British secretary of defense, told The Telegraph the mobile crematorium could be used as a way to minimize the appearance of Russian military casualties. Footage taken in 2014 provides a glimpse into the machinery and its capabilities.

    UH OH SPEGETTI O’s –
Putin ‘furious’ Ukraine invasion hasn’t been ‘easy,’ EU official says, citing intel report
Putin is accompanied in the Urals by Russian oligarchs “so no one will flee,” EU Parliament member Riho Terras claims in a Twitter thread
“He thought that the whole war would be easy and everything would be done in 1-4 days,” Terras wrote.
As his thread continues, Terras claims the intel report says the Russian forces lacked an adequate tactical plan and were themselves strapped for supplies – bringing enough rockets for only three or four days, and thus “use them sparingly.
Hopes of the Russians getting more weapons and ammunition are limited, Terras claims.
If the Ukrainians are able to fight off the Russians for 10 days, that will likely force Moscow to enter negotiations to end the conflict because “they have no money, weapons, or resources,” Terras writes

@631 Talk about delusional. If Trump had not kicked NATO in the ass they would have been way less prepared than they are now and team 0 including creepy grampa joe only gave Ukraine mre’s and cots. Trump gave them the first lethal aid from the US and started the trend that is a wave now including the Germans, yes the Germans. Your breath is foul with the stench of rotten russuan dressing –
Germany has just witnessed a truly historic day. Chancellor Olaf Scholz only came to power in December, but within 24 hours he has transformed modern Germany’s foreign policy.
During an emergency parliamentary session on Ukraine on Sunday, Chancellor Scholz announced an additional $113bn (£84bn) for the German army.
There was an audible ripple of shock in parliament. Some MPs clapped, some booed, others looked stunned.
Undeterred, Mr Scholz went on to announce drastic measures that would have been unthinkable a week ago, including a constitutional commitment to Nato’s military spending target of 2% of GDP – and he confirmed that Germany would be sending weapons direct to Ukraine.
Within a few days Vladimir Putin has managed to do what Nato allies have spent years trying to achieve: a massive increase of military spending in Germany.
This is arguably one of the biggest shifts ever seen in Germany’s post-war foreign policy
Before Thursday’s invasion of Ukraine, such a militaristic stance would have been unacceptable for most Germans
But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has shocked and stunned Germany’s government and German voters.
Pro-Moscow personalities, such as former SPD chancellor and Russian energy lobbyist Gerhard Schröder, are seen as toxic. Politicians who a week ago were still expressing understanding for President Putin’s arguments over Ukraine, such as prominent left-winger Sahra Wagenknecht, now say they were wrong.
Support for the Russian people is undiminished. MPs in parliament on Sunday gave a long, standing ovation when Mr Scholz praised Russian anti-war protesters for their bravery. But “Putin’s war”, as it’s now called in Germany, has destroyed any lingering sympathy for the Kremlin.
The centre-left Social Democrat SPD traditionally has a core belief in the power of dialogue with Russia.
This is a party with a sometimes nostalgic fondness for Russia, and with a deep belief that dogged Cold War diplomacy rather than military threats brought down the Berlin Wall and enabled German reunification.
The Green Party defines itself as pacifist, and has its roots in the West German peace movements of the 1960s and 1970s. The liberal FDP is pro-business, and keen on sinking taxes and spending and boosting trade and economic growth.
Yet it was an SPD chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who declared on Sunday that Germany had reached a dead end in dealing with Moscow, and announced the most hawkish approach to Russia Germany has ever known.
But since the invasion there has been a dawning realisation here that, if successful in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin may not stop there.
