[I’m interested in how our liberal readers contort themselves to overlook the disastrous first year of the Biden administration – mostly by regurgitating their ongoing TDS affliction. Behar also sez: “It’s not a cancel culture. It’s a consequence culture,”
oooh, I like that. A good verbal trick, like claiming that schools don’t have elements of critical race theory cuz “THEY ONLY TEACH THAT AT UNIVERSITIES!”. Make it sound desirable.
You take the phrase with a negative connotation and move on to a new one.
Next up, “IT’S NOT CONSEQUENCE CULTURE, IT’S RAINBOW UNICORN CULTURE!”.
Conversely, you take bad words like fascism, bend them beyond recognition to a 1920’s Italian, and apply them to anyone indulging in crimethink.
By the same token, I personally think (YMMV) that applying Communism and related descriptions to this thing emerging from the swamp is lazy thinking. There’s simply too many differences between the Woke people and either the early Soviet Union or what used to be leftist thinking in the US. Even though my thumbs are pricking, an agreed-upon naming convention would be nice.

Well, Joy Behar did confuse free speech with corporate speech, but at least she tried. Did like how she referenced Cablevision, a former pioneer pay TV cable company that once was a household name. The script translators called it cable vision because….well, frankly…because they are younger than Joy. I still to this day have a refrigerator magnet from a prior time and era that says, TCI Cablevision. Purple. Anywho, it made me smile seeing cable vision, not Cablevision, spelled out. Yes, a very minor point. I need to listen to that again on my record player since the reel to reel went on the fritz.

Not to worry, ‘communism’ has always come like Heinz – in ‘57 varieties’ – so take it as an umbrella term for collectivism beyond socialism and fascism. Its de minimalist criteria are that the state owns all real estate and means of production/distribution, which means it’s the universal employer.

But that won’t fit on a bumper sticker and it hardly rolls off the tongue. Can’t think of anything snappy right now. I’ll just settle for leftists. Please stop calling them ‘liberals’. They are anything but.
The Facists under Il Duce came close but they at least loved their country. Probably too much – a lot like the US in the late 1800s. We loved our country soooo much we thought it would be cool to make a lot more of it. Then we realized that was a mistake. Those folks didn’t want to be Americans in their part of the world – they wanted to be Americans in America.

My own take, not completely dissimilar I think.
The understanding and description of the ‘Left’ tends to come from too economic a viewpoint, people tend to fight the last war.
The ‘economics’ of the modern Left is the economics of vultures fighting over a carcass. A coalition of self-interested agents inventing a policy of consumption without production. The better to eat you with my dear, in the immortal words of The Wolf.
I think of Marxists as people who began with a policy and pounded (and pounded) round pegs into square holes by the millions. Of course, Day Two of Marxism is individuals competing for status. Everyone always wants the good lookin’ wimmen and gold, if not, they are soon replaced by the more ambitious.
The end result may be the same, those mass graves don’t fill themselves after all, but the roots of the two smell different to me.

If the folks running Substack (probably viewed as Reichsleiters by The Woke) were smart, and I’ll bet they are, they’d have all of their internet substrate done in/at companies and places that are pressure-proof. No advertisers is an additional strength. I’d say that VISA tends to be the weak spot for anything depending on payment. As an aside, a strong argument can be made for a stable widespread cryptocurrency in it’s independence from political pressure.

It is leftist. Meaning Marxist v.4…
Gone is the old fashioned dictatorship of the proletariat stuff.
This is cultural Marxism courtesy of the co-founder of the Communist Party of Italy, Antonio Gramsci, whose Prison Diaries pointed the way forward. We probably have Mussolini to blame for this as he tossed Gramsci in prison to rot but let him write… had the prison killed him or had he been left free, Stalin would have killed him after he dealt with that other apostate, Trotsky.
Cultural Marxism was taken up by the Frankfurt School and a momentous touchstone on the path was Max Horkheimer’s “Traditional and Critical Theory” in 1937… the way to raise the prole’s ire when they’re happy is to first make them unhappy. Brilliant!
Then in the ’60’s we have Frankfurt’s Herbie Marcuse filling heads with important drivel like Repressive Tolerance and Chairman Mao killing perhaps 100 million of his fellow Chinese in the (wait for it…) Cultural Revolution where they did their best to destroy what was China in order to save it.
It took longer in the USA to get here in a longer ramble through our institutions, but here we are. CRT has gotten folks pissed off, Critical Pedagogy is rotting our schools, Critical Gender has us confused, Critical everything is screwing us and driving us nuts.
Kudos to the late Professor Joseph Buttigieg, a noted translator of Gramsci and the founder of The International Gramsci Society. His son, Mayor Pete, is his legacy.

Maybe, but money still matters. Obviously, it’s ultimately just power and in a communist type of system there’s no need (at the top) for money.
Castro officially had a very small income but lived a lavish lifestyle because he had power. If he wanted something, he could just order it. But even the commies found they needed hard currency to keep the machine oiled and fed. That’s why the current regime in China has done so well. They had the power and cultural authoritarian part down and just needed to ramp up the capitalism part. The west (mostly) had the capitalism part down and running slick – all that was needed was to start ratcheting up the cultural authoritarian part. The big McCarthy “witch hunt” hoo-ha in the 50s was piddly. There really were commies in the US out to do us harm. The over-reach just stepped on the wrong toes. The massive over-reach of today’s CRT, cancel-culture, corporate knee-bending and govt corruption has the correct target. The average citizen.
And how is it played?
Money, honey.
China finally found the magic rope to sell us so we could hang ourselves. Actually, it seems we designed the damn thing. All they had to do was go along quietly for a while and cash the checks.
The final point I will make on this happy topic is that we can point to all kinds of precursors and origins and folks-that-got-it-right, but the world has so darn many moving parts that I doubt anyone can ever really predict how it will turn out even a year from now, beyond that there will be blood eventually.
Things do move faster now in the electronic age. The folks that are in power and manage to stay in power these days are like day traders vs the old long-term investors.
The quick and the dead.
And that is actually a very old saying.

I wonder sometimes about causalities in political writers -> political movements. Sometimes it sounds plausible, sometimes it seems like a survivor’s bias where a fringe intellectual movement happens to agree with tenets of a later mass movement. Coincidence? Handy justification used by inventors of history? 1:1 relationship? I’m never sure.
Having just finished a learned tome on the history of the Cultural Revolution, the actual philosophy still seems rather unclear, aside from the sheer joy of destruction of course. Self-interest, as usual, figured large, but that’s just primates doing their primate thing. You can always count on the Two Commandments…Greed and Fear.

True dat, as the saying goes.
From Viktor Suvorov (Vladimir Rezun), ‘The Liberators’
“Before the arrival in Severodvinsk of Marshal of the Soviet Union
Grechko, the high command of the Northern Fleet decided to paint the
shore-line cliffs grey. In all, over twenty kilometres of coastline were
painted. The sailors of two whole divisions and the men of a marines
regiment laboured over this titanic work for several weeks and, in the
process, used up the whole allocation of anti-corrosion paint supplied to
the entire fleet for a whole year. The Minister liked the colour of the
rocks, and from that time forth the painting of rocks before the arrival of
a high-ranking commander became one of the more remarkable traditions
of our Fleet.”
That, my friends, is power.

There’s always more jobs to be created. A fully burdened employee is not a trivial thing and a million bux doesn’t go that far. No doubt the money will flow into supervisors and case workers and offices and a coffee machine, none of which will make much difference.
Hang on. I’ll look at the article.

Me thinks the Governors….the Blue State governors really trashed the economy. Trump did not close down one single beer bar or restaurant or live music event in all of Nevada City……. or Frisco. Trump did not once say, “Lock ‘‘em up.” Gavin did, while dining in the French Laundry, one of the most expensive restaurants and highest rated restaurants in the world. The lock downs our governor ordered did not affect him in the least. Funny how that works. It’s all Trump’s fault. “…It’s worth paying attention to just how disordered Mr. Young’s thinking is because it summarizes everything that has gone awry on the political Left: He is wrong two ways: 1) morally, and 2) on the facts of the matter — which is as wrong as you can be. Like virtually everyone on the Democratic Party / Woke / Progressive axis, he is obviously in favor of suppressing free speech. Since when did that become okay for old hippies?
If I remember correctly (cuz I was there) the youth movement of the 1960s was all about freedom to say pretty much anything, except yell “fire” in a crowded theater — based on the idea that ordinary people were equipped to sort out the truth. During the War in Vietnam, we hippies were especially averse to the official lying that emanated from the Department of Defense, the FBI, the CIA, and the White House under both Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. We founded “alternative” newspapers in defiance of the establishment’s propaganda. We applauded Daniel Ellsberg’s purloined Pentagon Papers, revealing the mendacity of the war effort. Altogether, this activity made it more difficult for the government to prosecute that war, and to defend the strategy behind it.
Today the Left is not only all-in on speech suppression, but also censorship of print and broadcasting, and is especially avid for the diverse punishments of cancellation — ruining careers, reputations, livelihoods, and families of anyone who opposes Woke right-think. Alternate views are not tolerated, labeled “unacceptable” (Mr. Young put it exactly that way), and flagged as “misinformation” (ditto Mr. Young). It’s gotten to the point where the word misinformation has acquired a distinct odor that signals bad faith in everyone who flogs it. These days, the charge of misinformation is deliberate misinformation. …”

Breaker, breaker, I think we got ourselves a convoy. Driving over the Canadian Rockies in January takes some real motivation. 1.5 million Canooks descending on OTTAWA.
“That’s a 10-4 good Buddy. Crank up the Richard Pryor and keep your hammer down all the way to Boy-Toy town”.
Those Canadians are known for their politeness and civility…but not so much East of Saskatchewan. Their first request is to have Justin step aside and resign. Sounds reasonable to me. They are moving the catapults and barrels of hot tar into place. Exciting times, eh

I wish the Aathoritarianists could think of something new to punish the common man. It’s sooo predictable it’s lost its sting. Like, calling someone an anti-vaxxer or racist or both just does not carry the same sting anymore. Overused. It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t that swing.

BAKHMUT, Ukraine — Lt. Gen. Oleksandr Pavliuk, the top military commander on Ukraine’s eastern front, is used to getting what he asks for. So when he and his fellow military brass were asked by their American partners to provide a wish list of weapons needed to defend Ukraine against a potential large-scale Russian military offensive, he was sure he’d at least get a response.
But after weeks with no reply, he said, he now fears that he may have been ghosted by the Biden administration.
