[Well, the old year is going out like a lion. The whole county got plastered with its biggest snow storm in years, and there's more to come. Power went out 1215 this morning, and our new 24KW powerbox has been humming along ever since. Everybody will be ordering propane. Time to hunker down, stay warm, and pray for RAIN. gjr]

BT 626 Don’t bother wondering, that side across and all Alta Sierra dr poles down. Still many many various lines on the road and hanging above.
The scale is like a hurricane but with fewer deaths and homes destroyed. Infrastructure is toast.
Perhaps time to seek grants to harden our infrastructure.
I will find out what precipitated the crash of the internet, did a tree take out the backside cell tower?
Its happened too often for evacuation safety!
Please say a prayer for our exhausted emergency folks, utility, county works, first responders, tow truck drivers, folks with chainsaws and 4×4’s aiding their neighbors and their worried families!!
Have a Happy and Safe NEW YEARS Dear Friends, Don n Ellen!

Walt. Could be, could be. I just remembered that Albertsons was being built, but not completed yet. The Fowler Center. Or was that Vons, or Ralph’s after Lucky became Ralph’s and then Ralph’s moved to Albertsons…..Luckys became Ralph’s and then the new Safeway and Ralph’s
moved across the freeway…the freeway which locals did not use as much at the time. Kinda hard to keep it straight. It’s was Lucky’s in ‘88….then had the nearest phone booth (phone) to my hobo camp abode. Nine miles to Lucky’s. Walked out to that phone booth in the snow more than once. Uphill both ways!
The storm that made me suffer the most was the one about 10 years ago. Early snow hit with the leaves still on the black oaks and madrone. Big time early snow that brought carnage up Banner above Gracie and up Red Dog a ways. What a nightmare. Then, that was followed a later manba jamba snow that took out the higher elevations up to Cascade Shores. It was a long winter that once you thought you were out of it, the carnage just kept moving on up the hills. At Cascade Shores I remember 4 straight power poles down, then a couple standing, then another 4 out of 5 on the ground. And that was just the part I say. And way up Pasquale I was not paying attention, looking up at a brand new Utility Pole and walked right into the old pole hole and was covered up to my abs in a fresh soup of red clay. Then some teenagers drove by and yelled out “Carnage!”, a word I now use to this very our. I owe those punks for leaving me with that lasting word. Fake it til you make it, greenhorn.
The refugees left this evening. They went out and bought a new generator (they had two that don’t work), packed up those horrid aggressive ankle biters that terrorized and attacked my two lovely mellow outside dogs, and headed on out. Power or no power, there is no place like home. Left me with two fish bowls and a couple of cheapo common tropical fish. That’s cool. I will just flush them down the toilet and tell them they died. Or, maybe not. All in all, it was a nice time and everyone was pleasant, even me. Odd. I even let the dude touch my MAGA hat and let him hold it gently like a baby for a couple of minutes.
I did my part. The only time the tensions got awkward and started to rise was when I told them I have no creamer in the house, nor any sugar. They simply did not believe me. Inconceivable. They asked like three times before panic set it. Their plan was to go to Dutch Brothers and fix the emergency. Is Dutch Bros open? Do you think Dutch Bros is open, Biker Bill? Unbelievable. Me Casa is su casa, but I drink it black. Bring your own fu-fu for your fresh ground beans from Ethiopia. Kids nowadays. Never been to Dutch Bros. so how would I know?
I am such an environmentalist that I drink tap water, which they found rather primitive. Lol. If you refugees want good coffe just the way you like it, then stop by Dutch Bros first. Capice? Don’t be any stranger. The look on their faces when I said there is no sugar or coffee fu-fu creamer in this house warmed the cockles of me merry heart.

I admit that paying that much for boutique coffee that doesn’t have a large dollop of whiskey strikes me as insane, but horses for courses I guess. Maybe Dutch Brothers could apply for a liquor license.

Well, if you’re going to build a local economy based on importing and feeding the elderly and employing the young as service workers and pot growers, you can make that argument.
At the very least, it would be nice to have a general round of bitching with perhaps a few results. Thing is, it costs money to have reliable cell phones, gasoline-on-demand, more (largely unused) plows, weather-proof electricity, and even things like pharmacies that work when things get sketchy (important due to insurance company and hospital discharge tendency to run drug supplies close to the bone. Articles like blood thinners and braindrugs being cases in point, backup supplies not allowed). The elderly hate spending money and restaurant staff doesn’t make enough.
‘Grants’? How about the fine citizens of the county pony up their own cash?
I mostly expect lots of Good News about all the Great Work done with disaster declaration supervisor meetings, phone recharging at the library, special emergency management center openings, fights at the warming center, hand waving about climate change. And so it goes.

AOC Lashes Out At Critics After Being Caught In Florida: ‘Republicans Are Mad They Can’t Date Me’
“Ocasio-Cortez also lashed out at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ campaign, which tweeted at her last night.
“Welcome to Florida, AOC!” DeSantis’ campaign said. “We hope you’re enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State thanks to @RonDeSantisFL’s leadership.”
Ocasio-Cortez responded by suggesting without evidence that DeSantis had “been inexplicably missing for like 2 weeks,” before saying that she wanted to “help with local organizing” in Florida.

Hoping all of us enjoy the new year even more than last year!

Happy new year Scott, OK, I will “try” and use the correct pronoun.. But old habits die hard.
First the Lefties turned “Democrat” into a word, then used “Liberal” till it was no better than a four letter word. Now “progressive” is in the crapper ready for a good flushing.
They are already showing how “socialist” is far worse than they advertise.
Happy New Year! To friend and foe alike. Cheer up Lefties, it will only get worse for your side. You can only blame yourselves. As it was once said by one of your own,, “voting has consequences”. Can’t blame us for your voting for the likes of Biden. Just 11 months to go till there is a good House cleaning.
Will you think twice about voting for the likes of Herr Gavin?

It’s all good. I, too, remembered that Valentine’s Day Massacre snow dump (89, 91?) was followed by a warm spell. If you were walking about town and heard a car or snowplow coming, you ran to get as far back as possible or you would showered (blasted) with that combination or ice, slush, ice water, and projectiles of chards of ice glass….right down the back of the neck and face and…..well, the sun may be out, but you just took the Polar Dip without volunteering.
So, I was wrong. You misspoke. :). It ain’t easy being spiritual being having a human experience.
Currently, I have been having beautiful sunsets with the setting sunlight (Golden Hour) reflecting off the bodies of water way out in the rice fields and it looks a giant prehistoric river or lake bed way out yonder.
I once checked out Smartsville on line. Their weather records only went back to 1960. Older records must have burned up or gone with the wind. Anyway, there has been no recorded snowfall in Smartsville since 1960. Looking down from up here on Chactaw Ridge through the trees and what I can make out of Smartsville, I saw snow on the trees, roofs, and ground in Smartville, California. That also was the day you were heading down there in the middle of the whiteout at 5:00 am. You are the better man. I looked out and saw snow here and pulled the curtains and made a cup of mud.

With sufficient sense of humor, God would probably pop those folks back 150 years to hang with the Chiricahuan Apache and learn about spirituality, the Great Spirit and whatnot. The Wise Matriarchs that no doubt ran the place would put them to work making prayer bundles and learning yoga poses. Coffee is at 7:00AM sharp.
In the meantime, God has given us Joe Biden, so his humor quotient is being applied elsewhere. There really is a lot of ruin in a nation.
There should be some sort of legal definition for Native American, aside from tribal membership (otherwise, I could just sell memberships ala mail order parsons) that is used by Professor Grifter and others. Unless you grow up actually within the tribal boundary, speak the language, etc., I’m going to suggest 50% parentage. Having just one grandparent who is largely/all indigenous sounds like cheating to me. Maybe licensing could be done by 23andMe selling the college-instructor-talking-a-load-of-bollocks test kit.

Did Gallup End ‘Most Admired’ 74-Year Polling Tradition to Avoid Trump Placing First?

The year of 2021 ended as one of the most violent on record in Chicago, as a rise in the number of shootings left more people dead than in any single year in a quarter century, according to statistics released by the police department on Saturday.
According to the department, 2021 ended with 797 homicides. That is 25 more than were recorded 2020, 299 more than in 2019 and the most since 1996. And there were 3,561 shooting incidents in 2021, which is just over 300 more than were recorded in 2020 and a staggering 1,415 more shooting incidents than were recorded in the city in 2019.
Other cities have also seen an increase in the number of homicides. But Chicago, as it has in previous years, ended 2021 with more homicides than any other city in the United States, including New York and Los Angeles, both of which had recorded at least 300 fewer homicides than Chicago for the year as of late December, according to police data from those cities.

This is the Government’s idea on how to deal with overhead power lines.

A lot of people are in fairly bad shape, and the PG&E estimates for some areas are (I think) grossly overoptimistic. Some amount of food/fuel that looks good for a couple more days ain’t gonna work if the repairs or road clearings get pushed out a couple of weeks.

Thought of the morning. I haven’t done any kind of back o’ the envelope on this so it might be utter crap.
So what happens when everyone in a neighborhood or town buys a natgas whole-house generator, and it’s cold with a power outage at the same time. This assume that the Great State of California doesn’t force everyone to go all electric due to global warmingcooling.
Is there enough gas capacity to handle all of that running at once? My assumption is that PG&E does the bare minimum for any given spur of their system. Of course, there’s all kind of heck to pay if gas pressures go below some minimum.

Thought of the morning #2.
I was pondering all the somewhat screwed folks leaving messages on Yubanet.
A bunch of them have emergency generators, and ran out of propane. The idea that you are somehow independent from emergencies, even the rather small-scale sort, just because you’ve got a generator is kind of funny. Given the schedule of how propane is delivered, which is a sort of grid, a certain number of people will be low on the stuff when the surprise bad event occurs. By the same token, gasoline (which is difficult to store these days) can be rather hard to track down when the line is three hours long.
You have to laugh when you see big ol’ gas hog gas generators hooked to a house. 1/2 gallon per hour is not an unusual rate for the larger (non-inverter) variety.
Of course, you gotta wonder why so many elderly people live on tertiary county/forest service roads at higher elevations in this area. Things work ’til they don’t.
The descent from modern life to Sarajevo takes less than one might think.

Scenes: I am leaning towards getting an electric washer/dryer as opposed to propane. A propane generator sucks up the gas big time. With the price of propane, it might be cheaper in my case to do electric. Thoughts anyone?
As far as the all electric future, remember brown outs in the summer? PG&E telling us customers to not come home after work and turn on the AC, start the dish washer, and don’t do laundry in the “peak” hours. Come home, sit in the dark and sweat like a stuffed pig because PG&E simply cannot meet demand. Solution: Create more demand! Experience ‘Range Anxiety’ if you have a EV.
Remember all those PG&E pickups that proudly displayed on their sides and backs that they were filled by natural gas? I believe it was T- Bone Pickins who prompted and invested in natural gas powered big rigs as the way of the future and to cut our dependence on foreign oil. Every pickup truck in America comes with a 30 gallon ‘propane’ tank in its bed. Look at me, I am gasoline free, you heathens.
Imagine all those people who called their propane company right BEFORE the last snow storm and are waiting, waiting, waiting and the company phone says I have called after hours (business hours, lol). They are swamped and I don’t even know if propane companies can even get their big storage tanks refueled. Truckee gas stations went dry.
Yes, I am waiting for things to get back to normal, but realize anything that happens to me is considered a non-emergency in my mind. He who hesitates is last. Turned off the propane heat yesterday to stretch it until things get back to normal. A great excuse not to take a shower in a cold humble abode. I should have called two-three weeks ago.
Little froggie did not bury himself in the mud in the pond but instead chose to frolic and play. Then when the pond froze over, little froggie could not get to the mud in the bottom of the pond and froze to death. A sad story. None one to blame except myself. Above the fog and below the snow does not make one immune to what’s going on up the hill. 🙂

re: BillT “Thoughts anyone?”
If not 100% off-grid, it wouldn’t surprise me if electric dryers are a better bet than a propane dryer. When the power is down, string up a clothesline ya lazy bastid.
As we descend in Kunstler’s ‘Long Emergency’ and the US becomes a Third World Country, those of us in the favelas have to think in terms of all types of supply chain issues, be it power, gas, water, or Amazon Chinesium items. Sitting in the semi-dark is a good opportunity to think about what’s practical instead of what’s fun-to-buy.
Nothing to do with your washer, I’ll just exercise my logorrhea a bit…
My own take is to stay away from great big all-in-one solutions. Permanent generators (which probably fail in a pinch) whoofing up great gobs of natgas or propane, Tesla Powerwalls and $50k worth of panels that don’t work when it’s cloudy, ‘lectric cars that take a week to recharge from your panels. Best to have bog simple solutions that provide varying abilities. Multiple methods for cooking, lighting, heating, providing and purifying water, removing merde, internet/phone. Nothing expensive. Wing it when excitement happens.
When you are cooking exclusively with propane canisters, one feels a proper fool if the shelf at the hardware store only has butane. There’s always a run on the necessaries and you’ll never be first.
What I need to work on is an easy way to siphon gas from a modern car. It’s the perfect way to store generator fuel.

I have grown tired of the pressure to get a washer and dryer….from other people (guests). They always say the same thing: “Why don’t you take some of your money and buy a washer and dryer.” I wash by hand hand and like Jo Ann Rebane, I hang the old socks and tee shirts out in the breeze with its sun-kissed smell. Fresh as a daisy.
“Why don’t you take some of your money…..and make it more convenient for us!”, is what they are really saying. Or, Biker Bill, why don’t you take some of that piles of money you have and buy a new car, new pick-‘em-up truck, a new workshop, new clothes, new this, new that. Oh, folks are great at telling me how I should spend all that money.
I was at the Grocery Outlet once and this fine looking woman my age came over when I was grabbing some butter…Land O’ Lakes butter. She told me that I grabbed unsalted butter and I should..must…. buy salted butter. I told her I was grabbing butter and don’t care if it is unsalted or not. She insisted that I buy salted butter and even tried to put my butter back and grab me salted butter, being certain that I would like it better. “Great”, I thought, “another woman I don’t know telling me what I should buy and how to spend other people’s money. She was good looking, seemed to be nice woman, but was disappointed I did not take her well intentioned advice.
At another store when I used to buy flavored creamer, this lady approached me and told methat creamer ruins the taste of coffee. So, you don’t like the taste of coffee, looking down her nose at me. Hmm. Thank you for your unsolicited advise, Madam Control Freak
When that flavored coffee creamer went over two bucks a bottle, I simply stopped bothering to buy it. Too expensive.
What, some of us were raised by Depression babies. Still save soap bar slivers in a dish….although it is probably the wrong kind of soap. 🙂
Recently when someone came over and told me that I should take some of all that money and buy myself this or that (like a large screen TV or new vacuuming cleaner or build a new shop/barn) I was feeling rather mischievous, said, “Hang on, let me look at the Stock Market.” I pretended to look at the market which I don’t follow anymore or really care what it was been doing lately and said, “The market says I am a not a millionaire today, but I am still the same person!”
And get this. The State of California just sent me a check for 600 clams, unsolicited and unappreciated. WTF?? Oh yeah, I am so frugal that my income says I am a poor folk. I will just take that 600 bucks and toss it in the drawer instead of buying a new washer or TV. I will probably just donate it to someone or some organization…like the Northern Cal Burn Association that helps kids that have been burned badly in fires and sends them to some summer camp.
