   an odd thing, that. The Proctor & Gambles of the world have convinced everyone they need many many kinds of soap. Hand, shampoo, mechanics, bar, laundry, dish, dishwasher, maybe stuff for the car. All with special secret ingredients that makes it pH balanced, fresh and fragrant and non-fragrant. Bed Bath and Beyond is always the last to close in a dead mall, the cockroach of the retail world.
   Thank God the Land O’ Lakes Lady is gone. You’d sure hate to see a cute Native American chick on a product, it causes impure thoughts. Team Blue needs to keep their Precious Bodily Fluids in check so removing beauty from the world is a Prime Directive.
   There’s something to be said for the last generation of electricityless lifestyle appliances. A well-made wringer washer isn’t so bad (the van lifers have their own versions), the dryer is simplicity itself, and having lived in houses equipped for it, wood heat only and wood cooking stoves (good ones) work a treat. If I were to purposefully go off-grid, the house would be built around availability of burning stuff and low need for power (lights, TV, computer). Spending $50k on panels/batteries for a thing that operates for 1-2 days on cloudy days is a no-go. I’d like to see a water system here based on catchment rather than a well, it isn’t like there’s a real shortage.

   This is my take. To entertain white educated Lefties, they done erased the Red Man. Friggin libs. Got rid of Land-o-Lakes young maiden and then done flushed Chief Wahoo down the toilet. That one hurt. Like a knife in the chest. White Man erasing us. Lake o Lakes had nice bright artwork…. for a butter package….drawn by a Native America. But, Chief Wahoo! The face everyone loved. His face said, ”Let’s play ball!” He was the face of the American Baseball Fan. Beloved whether one was a Cleveland fan or not.
   I miss the bright shining face of Aunt Jemima smiling back at me from the cupboard. If she can’t put a smile on your face, then….ah, fiddlesticks to the barber.
   Saw a great interview during the erasing of Uncle Ben and the Land O’Lakes girl…than Tear Down The Statues frenzy. Odd fad.
   Anyway, they were interviews some native Navajo out in the desert and they said they would love to have their name on a sports team. They all nodded and agreed that that would kinda cool. Yeah, that would be cool. It would be cool people wearing Arizona Navajo jerseys. All upside, when you think about it.
   Shapiro said if they ever come up with a team called the New York Jews…heck yes, he would be wearing his New York Jews jerseys in all his travels. That would be cool, he thought about with a twinkle in his eye….just like the Navajo did when interviewed.

   Re: A good scout is always prepared.
   What have we learned from this recent snowfall? Some have learned that it is best to do a little routine maintenance in the summer or early fall. Charge up those AC or Marine batteries and get them ready, change spark plugs, change oil and clean filters on 4cycle old portable (and loud) generators if you got one, test firing , run it for a half hour or so and make sure that baby starts by the 3rd pull next time. Lol. Not a good idea to have to dig it out from the side of the house in a snowstorm only to find it not working. No start, no workie.
   That little generator my guests bought (6,000 watts) was so small and light and fired right up and they are singing it’s praise. Got em’ through til power came on….think they said it will be today. Sounds like they made a good one for half the size. Found it at the 5th place they looked….in Yuba City…and a lower price that I would expect.
   Scenes. You almost gave me a heart attack. It’s the big one, Elizabeth. 50k for two days of power? Are for friggin nuts? One should take that 50k and buy himself a good……. 🙂

   Here is advice I hold back on because some idiot might read this and burn the whole place down or die of monoxide poisoning. Or take a big swig off the Clorox jug. A nice long pull.
   Once, when a big tree brough came crashing down on my little trailer in the woods, breaking windows in the middle of a big snowstorm and walking out (the bough landed in right in front of the truck and was as high as the hood….a widow maker for sure…I shared my tale of wow with a true old-timer. He said take a metal coffee can, turn it on its side, put a small candle in there and point the can at you. It will radiate heat towards you. Did and it worked. Took the edge off of the freezing you ass off.
   Disclaimer: this was in a very well ventilated place (to say the least) and the Coffey can was placed on a good hard flat surface on a ceramic plate with no curtains or paper around pointing towards my noggin. Worked in a pinch. 50k??? lol.

   I slightly misstated. I meant $50k worth of Tesla Powerwall and panels.
   The panels obviously aren’t worth much when covered with snow (I can’t say that I like the idea of a roof mount anyhow) or when you get a day of cloudystormyrainy weather…or two…or a week.
   I don’t doubt that people can limp along if it’s sunny every other day and they keep their usage down.
   Average daily use in CA is what? 20kWh? Roughly two new Powerwalls if you build in some slack since, no doubt, you don’t want to run them down to 0%. Call it $17k (I think) installed. That’s one day. Of course, you still need a power source. Like PGE, or a bunch of panels/mounts/wires/magic boxes, or a Harbor Freight generator.
   I might be offbase on all this, but it looks hard to avoid the issue of .5 – $1 per watt hour for storage. You need a pretty big buffer to deal with the vagaries of weather and PGE.

   Don’t get me wrong, I really like the idea of battery-based backup power for a house. Keep it full with a generator that runs only part of the day if needed during an outage, you don’t need as much peak capacity in the generator. It’s just that batteries are still a bit expensive. Same problem with cars.
   Keeping the house going at full ‘lectric goodness is hard. The slave to Reddy Kilowatt is tracking down roughly 5 gallons of gas per day or slurping up quite a lot of propane or natgas with a great roaring machine running the whole time…or hooking up a small Honda inverter unit to their freezer and TV and calling it good.

    You’d think that a snow storm would be the perfect time to let out the more trustable perps from Wayne’s World for a bit of cleanup. You’ll get a remarkable amount of work out of someone for a combination of fresh air, coffee, and donuts. No doubt there would be immediate uproar over chain gangs and the turnkeys just don’t want to hear it.

    Scenes. In many cities to our northeast and north east east, it is the law that one must shovel the sidewalk/pathway in front of the house…your house. If not, you will get a citation. Get on it you sluggard.
    The real reason one should clear the snow off quickly and repeatedly in breaks is because after then snow gets trampled down by passerbys walking their dogs is because once it starts going through the freeze, melt, freeze melt cycle….it’s all a layer of hard hard smashed down ice under the white stuff and that is hard to get off. The shovel becomes an ice pick with little pieces breaking off a small piece at a time. Much easier to just to push the snow off and toss in in your front yard or up the sides of the driveway. Because it you wait too long, temps will be dropping to 6 degrees tonight without a cloud in the sky. Black ice baby and the slickest spot is that place where the refugees of the storm have trod on…trudged through, trodded(?):
    That is why God made ice melt and/or tons of sand. All for that bottom layer which is much more dangerous to step on than snow.
    Then, there is always the Newbie who comes up to help the folks or enjoy his first Winter Wonderland in Nevada County, fires up the new snow blower, and proceeds to clear the driveway by blowing all that white stuff into the middle of the street. Ass hat.
    Many moons ago I was coming down from the top of Banner, driving slowly because I was in a cargo van unchained and was making my way slowly down the hill with the automatic in 2nd and breaking only in critical spots like dry spots under trees and finally I (seemed like forever) made it out of the deep snow and just above Gayle Lane I came around a curve where some newbies had blown all snow into the street and as I came around the blind curve, I hit that pile the snow on the previously plowed road and as they used to say, “got sideways”. . Their driveway was cleared and the spin outs in front of their house and cars smashing into the trees….well, what did they care. Probably inside making hot toddies in blissful ignorance. Not only did the chap clear his driveway, hen also blew all the snow from the front yard into the street. Uncool.
    The forced one does not sound like he has a sidewalk in front nor the desire to pick up the ole scoop shovel. Slow down! There’s old men and dogs on this street!

    My recent guests, after leaving, went over to an elderly neighbors house and with shovels, dug the lady’s car out, which was parked next to the garage. Dug the car out and cleared the steep driveway to the street with one their neighbors also helping dig out rich woman on the hill. Not the whole driveway, but a path to get out.
    She paid them 600 bucks! Easy come, easy go. She must be po folk :). If there were not some young teenagers out there walking down the road without snow shovels, they just missed out on some spending money. College fund money or X-Box money. Fufu creamer money.
    I don’t know how much folks pay a kids to shovel out their driveways nowadays, but I was shocked to find out one guy (with friend) were making 60 bucks a driveway back in the way. The going rate then was about 20- 30 bucks.
    One lady paid them $75.00 dollars with tip! You get 3 teenagers knocking on doors of the unshoveled (sticks out like a sore thumb) and the young and virile and can knock out 4-5 driveways by 3 o’clock. Better life lesson that remote learning.
    The worse story I have heard so far is a tree on a house, residents unharmed yet in need to get the tree off the house ASAP. Roof repair needed now, power (even if on) cannot go back up until tree is cleared off the roof. They were charged $5,200 just to get that tree cut up and off the roof. Clean up of limbs and tree not included in price. Homeowners responsibility, later gator. We got ourselves a Class 1 emergency doing on. Wonder how much their homeowners will got went after filing that claim. Insurance will cover it, lol.

    Wife and I just returned from our annual multi-week Christmas trip to Texas and back, going through 7 states by private motor car. (love that term) Meaning stops in all sorts of rural and large towns. We saw no more than 15% wearing masks or bothering with distancing.
