’20-year Afghanistan Mission Accomplished’ tout our Democrat leaders as they thank all those service members who sacrificed their lives in so many ways.  These politicians describe such sacrifices as having been made voluntarily by our military heroes.  But IMHO that doesn’t jive with reality.  Who among the sacrificed would have willingly done so if told from the gitgo in, say, 2012 that you’re going to Afghanistan with the possibility of dying, getting your legs blown off, or coming back with PTSD in order to deny the Taliban ragheads another eight years of running the country as a tyrannical Islamist gulag, and which will again become home to various international terror organizations of the kind that gave us 9/11, and then we will cut and run?  Not many would have signed up for that kind of duty had they been told the truth.

But if being given a realistic mission, say, ‘It’s highly likely that we’ll be in Afghanistan forever with a minimal force level consisting mostly of intelligence operations, drone air support, and training Afghan security forces to prop up their government and keep the country from reverting to raghead terrorist control.  You will be in combat until we can bring the situation into a desired low/no casualty stasis.  This is the cost of doing White Hat business around the world to secure our homeland and the lands of our allies who join us in such operations.  America has done this in the past, and realistically today we see no future time when global evil will be vanquished so that such outposts and tours of duty, first outlined by Ambassador Kennan in 1946, will no longer be necessary.’  I know of no one in our circle of friends who would not sign up for such a tour when called upon – and that is because most of us have manned the ramparts of freedom at one time or another, and will do so again.  But it all starts with telling us the truth.

[4sep21 update]  Never let a crisis or disaster go to waste.  In the Dems’ desperate attempt to paper over the historically atrocious Biden Afghan debacle, the lamestream media are doing their best to sweep that ignominious, tragic, and chaotic military retreat under the rug, any rug of opportunity.  So Ida for Al-Qaeda has become the opportune switcheroo in the socialist press and punditry.  No more are we concerned about that premier terrorist organization resurging and setting up again in Afghanistan.  At the best the lamestream will continue pushing the lie that the Taliban doesn’t get along with Al-Qaeda and other recidivist outfits like the ISIS-X (currently X=K) et al.

So now we don’t have to worry about the return of all kinds of bad guys as long as we ‘work with’ the Taliban.  Anyone who has been paying attention (a shrinking minority) knows that all of them belong to the Haqqani network of cheek-by-jowl anti-western terror outfits.  And at their chapter house meetings, they must be laughing their butts off about what they read in the NYT, WaPo, and hear on CNN, MSNBC, … .  Meanwhile, to keep the Return of the Ragheads under wraps, the Democrats have qued up Covid and climate change for their lamestream as the next diversionary dollops for dimwits.  (Remember, they still have to have to keep the open-border crisis hidden from their cognitively calcified constituents.)

    I’ll suggest a few alternatives.
. Invade the country (which was pretty slick as I remember). Chase around the bad guys knowing you’ll never get them all, but give it a good lick. Leave. Wash rinse repeat if needed.
. Invade the country. Divide it into a dozen kingdoms. Bring in a Viceroy to play them off against each other with money and the odd punishment. Worked for the British for some time, it’s a proven methodology.
. Invade the country. Deindustrialize it. Remove all fuel, vehicles, weapons, tech that can be found. Leave. It’s not 100%, but it’ll slow them down a bit.
. Don’t invade the country. Bomb bad people for a bit to draw attention from the main effort. Find every backer of Islamic terrorists. Take their money. Doesn’t matter if they are Saudi royalty (likely). Keep it up for a few years.
Actually running the place as a country called ‘Afghanistan’ with a capital and all sounds like a waste of time and is merely applying Western thinking to a strange and foreign land. That’s probably also true for a lot of sub Saharan Africa, it’s all just a charade.

scenes 1201pm – I’ll accept those, since they were also part of a previously posted Rebane Doctrine approach. But here I just wanted to illustrate the difference between two messages – one a lie and one the truth (but not necessarily the optimal approach). Had we just kept the Trump scenario going, we could have tried different variations as time passed. None of them would have to be characterized as ‘nation building’ in our image. The bottom line here is that we avoid getting into decades long slow-boil hot wars with tens of thousands of our troops on the ground.

My guess is that the US gubmint agencies/subagencies (and to some extent multinational corporations) form warring tribes that want a piece of the action..either some money or just the sheer joy of managing someone else’s affairs (while boosting your own career, naturally).
I’d be surprised if there’s really a ‘Trump’ strategy although the aggregate of all those groups certainly makes up a scenario.
Perhaps the problem is that no single person or group is ever in charge. It’s just a bunch of mission creeps.

…having said that, I appreciate your point that the static situation in Afghanistan prior to the Biden Bungle was a starting point for something better, or at least something maintainable. I have no clue what the current cost involved was but the death rate for US troops seemed as low as you could expect, perhaps lower than stateside.
The way this all went down, the harm to relationships with the British and other involved parties, the sheer sloppiness of the whole deal, is clearly unacceptable but about what I would expect. Perhaps if the Men in Dresses who run Democratic politics had better acumen it might have been avoided.
As a side note, Scott Adams had an interesting take on all this in defense of Biden.

scenes 1243pm – True, and that kind of ‘broken field running’ strategy is the best that we can expect to execute if we want to maintain a tolerable geo-strategic state of affairs as the White Hat hegemon. From my perch, Kennan nailed it way back when. Trade global wars that may end civilization for more frequent, low-intensity police actions with willing allies.

They’ve also positively invited journalists to document their treasure, losing no moment to show the cameras what the Americans left behind, in a constant insult to injury message to Washington and the West.
During his speech on Tuesday, President Biden hailed the US exit and evacuation efforts an “extraordinary success”. He said, “No nation has ever done anything like it in all of history; only the United States had the capacity and the will and ability to do it.” In a deeply ironic, twisted, and tragic sense… this statement is true, just not at all in the way the president thinks.

Today’s quotes go here. Best place for them
Insight: “The real rulers in Washington are invisible and exercise power from behind the scenes.” —Justice Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965)
“Talk about a catastrophic success. The Biden administration wants credit for the Afghanistan evacuation as measured by the sheer number of people it flew out amid a security and humanitarian crisis of its own making. This is the arsonist bragging about how many fires he has put out. … That the U.S flew out more than 115,000 people out of Kabul is a testament to the awesome capabilities of the United States military. It is not in any way a vindication of President Biden’s exit.” —Rich Lowry
“It’s hard to imagine any prior American president, perhaps with the exception of Jimmy Carter, abandoning Americans behind enemy lines. Theodore Roosevelt mustered the naval might of the United States to save one American who had been kidnapped in Morocco in 1904. Barack Obama traded five Guantanamo detainees for Bowe Bergdahl in 2014. Even Biden felt the impulse to get every last American out. He pledged to do it in his interview with George Stephanopoulos. In order to keep his promise to the Taliban to get out by August 31, though, he broke his promise to his countrymen.” —Rich Lowry
“At a time when the U.S. needed a strong president, we got a weak and inept politician. At a time when the U.S. needed courageous leadership, we got a bumbling coward. At a time when we needed a truth-teller in the White House, we got a habitual liar. As a result, American military families are grieving, and the blood of their loved ones is on Biden’s hands. … [The president] has negotiated with the Taliban from a position of weakness, on his knees, with their gun held to his head. Not only does the Taliban not fear Biden — they laugh at him. He couldn’t frighten a puppy.” —Oliver North & David Goetsch
“There are many bad people and many bad countries in the world, and only a fear of good countries prevents them from conquering other countries. There is less fear of good countries in the world today than at any time since World War II. And that is especially so because the good countries are preoccupied with their own alleged evils rather than with the world’s real evils.” —Dennis Prager
“My reason for submitting a letter of resignation: A lack of trust and confidence in your ability to lead.” —final line of Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller’s resignation letter
Friendly fire: “Many people I’m speaking to say we are far worse off than we were from the beginning because within a few weeks of launching this war, the Taliban were overthrown, al-Qaeda was scattered. Now, the U.S. is leaving after 20 years with the Taliban in power and the United States having been driven out. It’s a tremendous legacy. … Some have described it as the worst capitulation of Western values in our lifetimes.” —NBC News’s Richard Engel
The BIG Lie: “We have Americans that get stranded in countries all the time.” —Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby
Grand delusions I: “We have considerable leverage over the Taliban.” —National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan
Grand delusions II: “We have enormous leverage over the Taliban.” —White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki
Non compos mentis I: “The U.S. … has our own far religious right dreaming of a theocracy that would impose a particular brand of Christianity, drive women from the workforce and solely into childbirth, and control all politics.” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid
Non compos mentis II: “Always funny to me when [Christians] pretend their religion is somehow less oppressive of women than Islam.” —freelance journalist Michelle Taylor, a.k.a. Feminista Jones
Non compos mentis III: “The Taliban allow no liberty of conscience. They are like #ChristianNationalists and other American Christian fundamentalists.” —Duke University theology professor Curtis Freeman
Non compos mentis IV: “Make no mistake; Christian evangelicals are America’s #taliban and weld [sic] as much power too in their society.” —author John Smith
Non compos mentis V: “The Taliban are as fanatical about their beliefs and culture as the millions of people right here in the U.S. who believe in religion, conspiracy theories, and alternate reality.” —actor Tim Russ
And last… “The President made the decision to trust the Taliban. The President made the decision to set an arbitrary August 31st deadline. The President made the decision to abandon Bagram Air Base. The President made the decision not to expand the perimeter around Karzai International Airport. The President made the decision to undermine our NATO allies. The President made the decision to break our word to our Afghan partners. The President made the decision to tell one lie after another as the crisis unfolded. The President made the morally indefensible decision to leave Americans behind. Dishonor was the President’s choice. May history never forget this cowardice.” —Senator Ben Sasse

Wile we were there for a generation and were able to train some pilots the maintainers was a whole different issue because of how high tech and complicated, they never had a robust cohort of competent technicians. You also had a culture of corruption like you could not imagine. That bled the supply system.

It chiefly involved a phone call Trump had with counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky about investigating Biden and his son Hunter.
“It is not just the call transcript. The whistleblower complaint would likely have more details. We need both. And not just the call,” Psaki wrote at the time.”

If they can impeach Trump for a phone call where no law was broken, Biden is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors for providing aid to the enemy (i.e. providing the kill list of Americans stuck in Afghanistan and the list of Afghan employees who couldn’t get out on the SIV Program). Biden lied and people died. Aid to the enemy is treason and certainly impeachable. While Republicans and Democrats have both made impeachment cheap (Clinton and now Trump), this act is certainly impeachable. That said, I’d rather keep Biden in office as long as possible so Republicans can wrap that albatross around the neck of every Democrat until 2025.
