George Rebane
For some time now a hard-left commenter signing himself as ‘Nevada County Right Wing Watch’ has been visiting these pages and leaving a trail of his intelligence, understanding, and thoughts. He claims to be part of an extensive organization, apparently one of several reported in the news that are doing their best to intimidate and shut down all wrong thought in the country. It’s hard to tell how authentic all this is. But it’s very easy to tell from both the news and as corroborated on this blog, that the communication between the polarized sides is extremely asymmetrical. The Left wants to silence the Right. The Right wants an open forum debate on ideas, happenings, history, economics, etc.
A microcosm of this activity has been recorded in RR’s comment streams for the last 14 years, and in recent years the exchange has become more intense. During this time the leftwingers come here to repeatedly tell us that our views are grossly in error, evil, and that no one cares what we think – and yet they come. All of them appear to think that the conservetarian ideas promoted by me and others are unique, constrained to a tiny group in these foothills, and only represent fringe far-right thought. They have no idea of the existence of the tens of millions of every-day Americans with whom we are ideological soulmates. From the content of their comments, it’s clear they think that if only they could silence RR, then such wrong thinking would be eliminated from the land.
In the following I present a couple of extracted comment threads from recent posts to give readers a clearer picture of the virulence experienced here and, no doubt, elsewhere. We start with the contribution of our ever-vigilant Right Wing Watcher in a comment thread under ‘$15/hr Dumbth on the March’.
Well, well, well. We find ourselves back at the Home of Nevada County White Nationalism!
Don't wanna hear any more bullshit about the benefits of Californians moving to Texas. The worst statewide disaster in Texas history, orchestrated by the GOP mindless mantra of deregulation and cutting costs. Any Cali residents moving to Texas while the GOP holds every statewide elected seat in that state are MORONS. Idiots. Suckers. Tools. Texas is now a fcking (sic) third world country run by idiots in the GOP.
What a fcking (sic) embarrassment to the good people of Austin and such. A disaster of unimaginable depth, all created by the GOP. One Hundred Percent. You own it boys, your brothers in arms.
Oh and the boys at our regional monitoring site continue to laugh and talk about you, Walt. You are fairly famous in Right Wing Watch circles. Be proud boy, be proud!
Carry on. You are on Candid Camera! Posted by: Nevada County Right Wing Watch | 18 February 2021 at 10:00 PM
To which I replied –
Right Wing Watch 1000pm – There’s no denying it, you guys sure are a scary bunch. The way you keep your eyes on all the nation’s wrong thinkers from your “regional monitoring sites” tells everyone that you have much more in mind than just keeping tabs on us.
But I and, I’m sure others, would be interested to know how you view your organization. Do you see yourselves modeled after Hitler’s extra-governmental Nazi Brown Shirts ready for action in the streets? Or are you more like communist East Germany’s Stasi civilian corps that was organized to keep an eye on fellow citizens and report regularly on their activities? Both were very effective in preventing wrong thought and crushing wrong thinkers.
Please let us know what kind of an organization we now have in America that is regionally structured with “Right Wing Watch circles” manned by eager stalwarts (the “boys”) doing their duty to keep the country on the right track. If we wanted RR to become a leftwing compliant outlet, do you have any literature that would guide us in how we should reformulate our thoughts and expressions so as to blend in to be more like the other progressive blogs hereabouts? Team Biden is contemplating a cabinet level Ministry of Truth to suppress ‘fake news’ and ‘disinformation’, have you been tagged to become their eyes and ears across the land? Then there’s the thread under ‘Scattershots – 16feb21’ with Chris Peterson, one of the more virulent progressives in these parts who usually takes me to task on the liberal blogs, but does come here when he wants his voice to be more widely heard. He is one of the legions of liberals who don’t understand the necessary attributes of a sovereign nation-state, and understands even less about immigration (as opposed to illegal entry). His deficit in the latter includes a belief that the US should have open borders to admit all walk-ins who complain of having a hard time making it in their native lands or that there are bad people living there. These people should be unconditionally embraced and succored by America, and provided a facile path to citizenship. Anything less is heartless and not the American way.
Apropos to those beliefs, he joins with other local liberal worthies lambasting my support of secure borders and opposition to unfettered entry of illegal aliens. He and his consider my position to be both immoral and hypocritical since I am a naturalized citizen who came here as a WW2 refugee and an invited legal immigrant. To such minds as theirs, there is no difference between those entering according to our country’s laws, and those crawling in under the fence in the dark of night.
They take comfort in their views by imagining that my family and I, along with millions of similarly fleeing east Europeans, were somehow Nazi collaborators after escaping from the Red Army – in short, that our refugee status was assumed under a false flag when interred in a UN displaced persons camp after the war. In his own words.
As you well know, George, some of the camps were just displaced civilians, but some were up to 80% Nazi soldiers. Tell us which camp your family was in and we can easily look up in-depth studies done on who was there and where they came from. But you already knew that. … Posted by: Chris Peterson | 18 February 2021 at 03:48 PM
ChrisP 348pm – NONE of the UN displaced person refugee camps operated by UNRRA and then IRO had any known Nazis or Communists in them. To be admitted required going through a formidable screening process to assure that you were politically 'clean'. And since you know nothing of this blog's contents, I'll let you do a voyage of discovery and find out in which DP camps the Rebanes were interred. … Posted by: George Rebane | 18 February 2021 at 04:48 PM
George, My point isn't whether your family had Nazi collaborators or not, I couldn't care less. I find it much more interesting that your family most likely came to America as WW2 refugees, which was an act of compassion on our part and is counter to every word you write on the subject. And if your family did come here as refugees, it makes one question why families like mine, who have been here since the early 1700's, should take any of your xenophobic ramblings seriously. It's the black hole in the center of your pseudo-intellectualism and draws into question whether you truly understand what being a patriot of this nation actually means.
So, you can take your political advice on how our nation should be run and shove it; we are a society with over 240 years of shared sacrifice and we don't need your empty platitudes to "fix" what we've been successfully doing so long without your misguided opinions. Drop the crayons and step away from the Constitution; you are nothing but a distraction from the real issues of the day. Posted by: Chris Peterson | 19 February 2021 at 07:54 AM
ChrisP 754am – Priceless Mr Peterson, simply priceless. Thank you for being open and revealing in how your kind views immigrants and naturalized citizens. Posted by: George Rebane | 19 February 2021 at 08:54 AM
As a footnote, two other commenters also replied to Mr Peterson’s attack followed by his final reply.
Yes George. You’re an immigrant, and our families have been here way longer than yours. As such you really have no right to espouse your thoughts on the Constitution. Am I summing up your argument adequately Mr. Peterson? Posted by: Barry Pruett | 19 February 2021 at 08:02 AM
C.P., I'm ashamed for you… I've family roots in the US stretching to the 1600s (which by Peterson standard identity politics means i win) and some arriving not much before the Rebanes. My wife was born in Gary, IN, of WW2 refugees from Eastern Europe, fleeing the leftist thugs led by Tito.
You are the xenophobe here. The Ugly American. Posted by: Gregory | 19 February 2021 at 10:03 AM
So, just so we're clear; you guys aren't xenophobic, but anyone who reads your posts and dares to call you that must be xenophobic, right? There are no past posts disparaging the refugees coming to our southern border, correct? And all comments on ethnic and religious differences are nurturing and constructive? Right then.
And someone who takes pride in his family coming here centuries ago must never question the wisdom of newcomers whose every written word is a rebuke of the historical American way of doing things. Rebanes' every comment seeks to snuff the flames beneath the great melting pot of our society. Every thought that's put to print is negative; stop this, change that, ridicule these, reject those. You folks are consumed with all things cynical and bleak, with never a positive comment except to pat each other on the back for a barb well delivered.
I thank the gods daily that you are the minority; always have been and always will be, and I leave you to wallow in the festering sludge of your own making.

So there you have it. As stark a difference as one can imagine. The millions of Chris Petersons of our country want to silence conservative naturalized citizens who came here legally, and promote the public demonstrations by hordes of sign-carrying illegals interpreting their ‘constitutional rights’ and demanding that our government support such fabricated rights and force American citizens to welcome and succor them in their illegally appropriated new home. Those who oppose such policies are to be watched and noted for various kinds of contemplated future dispositions that include institutionalized “deprogramming” and mass “re-education” (a la the Uighurs under the tender mercies of the CCP, more here).
