Beware of people who need outliers to make their point, and then use these to cloud the big picture.

Food prices are soaring even though plants are coming back on line and distribution problems have been solved.  The producers’ argument is that worker safety requires reconfiguration of work spaces and the introduction of new automation.  The real answer is that this opportunity to permanently reduce labor costs can not be wasted.  Stand by for the next surge of systemic unemployment as the C19 pandemic wanes – keep an eye on the workforce participation rate that was already at a low of about 62% before the virus hit; can we return to that level?

‘Gone With the Wind’ and ‘Cops’ have been pulled by their distributors in fear of knee-bender mobs who have assumed the role of the country’s new thought police.  GWTW’s distributor HBO Max stated, “Gone With the Wind is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”  America is retreating toward the Russia1918 and Germany1934. (more here)

Liberal thought leaders Dr William Galston, Brookings Institute Fellow, and VP-candidate-in-waiting Stacey Abrams base their messages on the beliefs of the ill-informed mass of Americans who hold that George Floyd’s death is a common occurrence at the hands of our police, and that the perennial poverty and crime in black communities are entirely due to Republicans suppressing the black vote over the last half century.  The data record supports none of these assertions.  The glaring bottom line here is that black lives do NOT matter to blacks, nor to their plantation politicians whom they keep in their sinecured offices.  All this mind-boggling mass action is possible with people subjected to utterly failed schools and a perennially propagandizing entertainment and news media. (more here and here)

BonBdeaths_2019On violent black deaths, the posterchild statistic is the comparison of the 9 unarmed blacks who died at the hands of police to the 7,400+ blacks who were murdered by fellow blacks. “The police fatally shot nine unarmed blacks and 19 unarmed whites in 2019, according to a Washington Post database, down from 38 and 32, respectively, in 2015. The Post defines “unarmed” broadly to include such cases as a suspect in Newark, N.J., who had a loaded handgun in his car during a police chase. In 2018 there were 7,407 black homicide victims. Assuming a comparable number of victims last year, those nine unarmed black victims of police shootings represent 0.1% of all African-Americans killed in 2019. By contrast, a police officer is 18½ times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer.” (here)

[11jun20 update]  Increasingly Great Divide ducks are lining up.  The leading elements of our Left are taking the initiative with more than just lootings, burnings, and killings of the established order, they have now assumed control of a major city’s central section, declaring it to be a new (communist, socialist?) “autonomous zone” while controlling ingress/egress to their new domain.  About all this the timid leftwing governor of Washington claimed no knowledge.  Meanwhile some are beginning the calculus of a portending civil war (here), and others have decided to take up arms in the defense of their communities against imported Antifa thugs.  An example ignored in the lamestream (and the scared shitless Fox News) is Coeur d’Alene where hundreds of the good citizens of Idaho made their presence known in town, which subsequently saw no violent mob activity. (here and here)   Meanwhile, leftwing sites claim that the Antifa threat was all a hoax.  My 30may20 third question (here) is being answered.

The clamped down minds of lamestream journalism are starting to denounce their own.  Today one wrong slip of the lip, and you’re history.  So discovered the NYT’s editorial page editor, the editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the editors of Bon Appétit magazine.  The Left is finally in a position to actively start denying 1A rights in the name of suppressing their obscure but ubiquitous definitions of racism. “The issue here is not about the assertion that racism is endemic in the U.S. The issue is the willingness by many to displace the American system of free argument with a system of enforced, coerced opinion and censorship, which forces comparison to the opinion-control mechanisms that existed in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.” (more here)  Samizdat lives.

[12jun20 update]  Russian collusion is alive and well in the belief and propaganda systems of the Left (witnessed by our leftwinger comments).  To the rest of us it is astounding that the progressives’ hatred of Trump impels them to continue one their most vicious Big Lies, day after day telling the country that Trump did indeed collude with the Russians.  But more importantly, that part and parcel of this collusion enabled the Russians to interfere in the 2016 so successfully that it was the impact of their efforts that sealed the ‘fraudulent election’ in Trump’s favor.  This narrative continues unabated to this day.

Re my C19 response policy.  Readers may be curious as to what my policy would be for public gatherings and general behavior in public forums.  To save my burying it in some comment stream, I’ll put it here for all to see.  I don’t support further lockdowns even though we will have succeeding ‘waves’ of C19 until a reliable vaccine is developed. None has been developed yet for the garden variety flu, and we have succeeding waves of it every fall and winter which cause tens of thousands to die of it. No one has been social distancing, wearing masks, locking down, and turning off the economy for that, at least for a century. Rebane Doctrine calls for the government and healthcare institutions to publish the latest risk data (accounting for demographics, comorbidity, and geography) for C19, flu, …, and all other contagious diseases, along with what lowers the probability of people getting infected. Then everyone can decide for themselves where to go and which events to attend. Laws should be passed that you get to sue no one if you catch the bug.

[13jun20 update]  Both the Right and Left understand that a robust free press is required to maintain a liberal democracy.  The Left opposes a free press and promotes the censorship of ideas they don’t favor.  What does that say about the Left’s real intentions to maintain a liberal democracy?  The Left promotes the Big Lie that the killing of George Floyd and other black males is a common police activity and not a rare outlier (see above).  Is there anything Trump does that anywhere near approaches that for dividing the country?

The “killed an unarmed person” charge is based on a wrongful model… if someone challenges a law enforcement officer and they are unarmed, the LEO must not use a gun.
Sorry, charlie. The LEO has no obligation to “fight fair”… he/she has right to do their job and that doesn’t include wrassling with a subject over control of the LEO’s weapon(s).

“375 million interactions with the public every year. 375 million interactions — overwhelmingly positive responses. Overwhelmingly positive responses. But I read in the papers all week, we all read in the papers, that in the black community, mothers are worried about their children getting home from school without being killed by a cop. What world are we living in?! That doesn’t happen! It does not happen!
I am not Derek Chauvin. They are not him. He killed someone. We didn’t.
Everybody’s trying to shame us. The legislators. The press. Everybody’s trying to shame us into being embarrassed about our profession … stop treating us like animals and thugs, and start treating us with some respect.

There’s a lot more going on than ‘Cops’ and ‘Gone with the Wind’ in terms of the Cultural Revolution.
I genuinely wonder when/if there’ll be a backlash once all the statues are toppled, all the streets in Glasgow are named after Rosa Parks, all the bad people who once uttered badwords get outed and fired.
It’s all so fast and so audacious I think that jus’ regular folks are sort of stunned. There’s a real lesson here in explaining how such a small group took over Imperial Russia in just a few years. It’s a kind of perfect storm of Diversity!, the plague, monopolistic media/internet, and a multi-decade takeover of schools and bureaucracy. The immune system you might expect in traditional culture is compromised.
It just shows how naive I am. I was expecting a close election with all the typical fuss and fury. Instead a sort of slow-motion takeover being run by mobs and their highly placed allies. Edward Luttwak always said that successful coups require the backing of an out-of-power elite.

The LE are already social workers and marriage counselors. Heck, one time many moons ago I went out to my vehicle at 3:00 am and started rooting through the car looking for some cigs I hoped I left in there. A LE saw me in the dark going through the car with door open, swung a Uey, hit his lights, and approached. I immediately started to approach him to explain, and he said, “Stop right there, don’t come any closer”. I stopped, explained what I was doing, told him I live here and my ID is in the house…and this is my car. He believed me, had another more important call come in, and before driving off, he told me that “smoking is bad for you” and I should think about quitting.
Free health advice on top of being a law enforcement officer, social worker, marriage counselor, and drug counselor. 🙂
When a cop tells you don’t approach any closer (4-6 feet away), best to follow the advise. Otherwise I may get pushed back, fall, and crack my melon, no matter how peaceful I was.

fish 3:07 – “God the Western world is just dirt dumb!”
Oh now c’mon. Pretty sure the rest of the world isn’t any brighter.
I think the problem is that the western world had a good handle on free thought and liberty combined with a great transmittal and growth of knowledge. All of that worked together to produce a standard of living that, in turn, produced the corolary: “fat, dumb and happy”.
At least a minority of the western world is dumb enough to make the headlines, but I would say 80% are too busy working and producing to have much effect on this current mess. After the riots of the 60’s we got to work and it settled down.
    Different this time?
    It’s always different.

I am beginning to think what we are witnessing is just a continuation of the 60’s riots and demonstrations. They weren’t widely called protests then. Oh, we went back to work and it settled down alright, but they went to work and never settled down. Something happened to the old 60’s demonstrators that left them stuck there. They never grew up.

BT 5:11 – You may be correct, but also remember there was a lot of legitimate need for social change in the 60’s.
18 yr olds couldn’t vote but were shipped off to the Dems ongoing quagmire called ‘Nam. Dems were standing literally in the doorway against blacks. Our local sheriff in Sac County was a bigoted ignorant bully. The minor and petty general grievances of today against the police are laughable. Even into the 70’s my wife was openly sexually harassed by stupid old goats higher up in the org.
I told her not to worry about the lack of income. Walk out.
The protesters of today may think they are a continuation of yesterdays, but now it’s just a bunch of spoiled brats throwing a temper tantrum.
Even back in the 60’s a lot of the kids causing trouble had no bitch. They were just trying to get laid. It’s always a mish-mash of a lot of different causes, opinions, grievances and just general anguish that “mommy never loved me”. Boo hoo.
The biggest difference is the educational system.
I can not imagine the kind of stupidity and breath-taking ignorance of today’s teachers and professors would ever be allowed back in the day no matter what their political views.
I’m seeing people that shouldn’t hold a H.S. diploma being ‘chairs’ of some fabricated BS dept at universities that once produced the cream of educated thought in the world. Now, they can’t even think.
    It’s just sad.

BACKFIRE: ‘Gone With The Wind’ Sales Explode After Leftists Target Movie. Sales Of Other Classics Also Skyrocketing.
    https://www.dailywire.com/news/backfire-gone-with-the-wind-sales-explode-after-leftists-target-movie-sales-of-other-classics-also-skyrocketing
Wow. Orders for Gone with the Wind and Blazing Saddles are soaring off the charts. Hurry, hurry, hurry. Step right up and get yours before it’s burned in the street bonfire coming to a neighborhood near you. The book burners are back and in control.
The grunt for brains don’t realize the book ‘Gone With the Wind’ was written explicitly to be anti-slavery book by exposing slavery life in the Antebellum Period and into the War Between the States. The book showed the plantation owners (and slave owners) in an unsympathetic light.
Reminds me of when a sorority house’s plan to have a Kentucky Derby themed party got shut down for racism and being quite troubling (insensitive) to people of color. The Antebellum Period is a big no-no and not to be an appropriate party theme. All Antebellum Period themes banned. The only problems I saw were:
    1) The Kentucky Derby had its maiden race AFTER the Civil War
    2) This happened at a college campus where you would assume they would know a little history.
    Note to self: never assume.

Trump is clamping down on news ala Hugo Chavez, Duterte, Putin, et al.
President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign has sued several news outlets for coverage it deemed unflattering.
On Wednesday, the president’s team added a new wrinkle to its media intimidation tactics: demanding that a TV network retract a poll it did not like.
In an unusual cease-and-desist letter, the Trump campaign called on CNN to retract and apologize for a national poll this week that showed the president trailing his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, by 14 percentage points among registered voters.
Trump’s aides called the poll “phony” and “a stunt,” accusing CNN without evidence of trying to “stifle momentum and enthusiasm for the president and present a false view generally of the actual support across America for the president.”
CNN, like other major news outlets, uses a third-party polling firm to conduct opinion surveys. In a bracing riposte, the network’s general counsel, David Vigilante, rejected the Trump campaign’s request.
“To the extent we have received legal threats from political leaders in the past, they have typically come from countries like Venezuela or other regimes where there is little or no respect for a free and independent media,” Vigilante wrote. He added: “Your letter is factually and legally baseless. It is yet another bad faith attempt by the campaign to threaten litigation to muzzle speech it does not want voters to read or hear.”

That one has stuck with me more that the other stories of the media surrendering to the MOB after a few brief hours of defending the hill, if that long.
The reason the Philly Inquisition Inquirer editor got tarred and feathered and run out of town was because of the editorial, “Buildings Matter”. I read it, she made some very valid points. Buildings Matter. Yep, they do. It’s not like she wrote BLM means Blue Lives Matter or Blue Lines Matter, or committed the unforgivable sin with a editorial that read “All Lives Matter.”
Buildings matter is in direct conflict with the Blue Mob’s narrative that violence against property (stuff) is not violence at all. People first and all that song and dance. The rest does not matter so much. Stuff is replaceable.
If she wrote “Buildings Do Not Matter”, the editor would be carried down the street on the shoulders of the cheering throng.
Next time I read some local parroting (squawk, squawk) that sentiment, I will tell them to go burn down the Hospitality House cause Buildings Do Not Matter. Buildings matter to the homeless and granny trying to get her meds at a local RX. How selfish!

‘The Krugman-Led Mob Comes for Academic Freedom’
“Worst of all, though, the petition’s most serious charge is an utter lie. It accuses Uhlig for “drawing parallels between the BLM movement and the Ku Klux Klan” in a blog post. Uhlig did no such thing, not even close — and any person of good faith who reads the allegedly incriminating blog post knows it. Uhlig asked a theoretical question of those defending BLM flag protests on idealistic grounds. If acts of protest are truly about supporting the ideals of free expression, as so many had argued, would those people also defend the right of the Klan to protest? A bit clumsy, perhaps, but a legitimate query.
The answer, of course, is no. The Left seems increasingly incapable of living by neutral principles, an ideal that genuine liberals who fought to allow Nazis to march through the streets of Skokie, and so on, were once proud to do. These aren’t liberals anymore. Krugman and his minions have no interst in universally applied rights. They have no interst in academic freedom. (Unless it can be used to save a Leftist professor.) They have no interest in genuine debate.
There should be mass outrage among academics over this attack on speech. Only handful of professors though, as far as I can tell, have spoken up for Uhlig. But this isn’t only about Journal of Political Economy. Krugman’s mob wants academics to think twice about dissenting from the line that it has set.“

THE FASCISTS ARE AFTER WILLIAM JACOBSON
Jacobson appropriately draws a parallel to the Chinese Cultural Revolution:
“We are living in extraordinarily dangerous times, reminiscent of the Chinese Communist Cultural Revolution, in which professors guilty of wrongthink were publicy denounced and fired at the behest of students who insist on absolute ideological orthodoxy.”
Don’t think the fascists will stop with the universities. They will come for all of us in due course. It is incumbent on everyone who values freedom and democracy to stand up to the Brownshirts. Sadly, I have not yet seen a single Democratic Party politician willing to part company with the mob on behalf of liberty.

Chinese Communist Counter Revolution? I was thinking along the lines of the French Revolution.

Under the category of the sick left:
CHRONICLES OF THE CRAZY TIME (2)
“If the mob comes for Spongebob Squarepants I’m going to get really angry.
Not even the Poetry Foundation is spared the purge by the mob:”….
“When asked if he would consider taking down a statue of Winston Churchill which had the word “racist” sprayed on it during protests last weekend, Mr Khan said: “No – nobody’s perfect, whether it’s Churchill, whether it’s Gandhi, whether it’s Malcolm X.
Maybe Khan didn’t hear that a statue of Gandhi outside the Indian embassy in Washington DC was defaced last week. Like Martin Luther King Jr., I suspect the left now holds Gandhi in contempt. That’s if they actually know much about him. (NB: I like to assign King’s “Letter from the Birmingham Jail” to students precisely for its many conservative elements. It will be banned someday.)”
Chaser: Guess what statue in Seattle hasn’t been disturbed? Would you believe it’s this guy (and no, your eyes don’t deceive you—this is not a fishing boat captain): [Statue of Lenin]

‪Assume there’s a vaccine against white racism. Would 70% of black kids STILL be raised in fatherless homes? Would 50% of blacks STILL dropout of many urban high schools? Would 25% of young black urban men STILL have criminal records? Would blacks STILL kill 7000 blacks every yr.?‬ –The Sage of South Central

BillT 306pm – No Mr Tozer, I can assure you that all of those deficits will disappear shortly after we all have become vaccinated. This realization alone should encourage all progressives to contribute generously for research to develop said vaccine. Thanks for bringing up this important concept during these times of trial and tribulations.

BillT 148pm – Yes, I too am seeing more and more writings that acknowledge we are at or past the tipping point for the Great Divide. Rebane Doctrine has made it clear for some years now that we are way past the tipping point. Both sides are in a kabuki dance now trying to size each other up as to real intentions and most probable response. The unchanged status quo of the Left’s attempt to make the Right second class citizens to be contained until re-educated, and the Right’s desire to reside in a free country based on open markets, meritocratic capitalism, the Bastiat triangle of rights, and where they again have a voice, dictates political separation at a minimum, this becomes more apparent every day. Keep bringing us these harbingers as you find them Mr Tozer.

No, this is not Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Very similar, but it’s called Minneapolis, Minnesota. Neighbors helping neighbors protect their homes, businesses, friends, and community members.

re: The clamped down minds of lamestream journalism are starting to denounce their own.
‘The American Press Is Destroying Itself
A flurry of newsroom revolts has transformed the American press’
“Now, this madness is coming for journalism. Beginning on Friday, June 5th, a series of controversies rocked the media. By my count, at least eight news organizations dealt with internal uprisings (it was likely more). Most involved groups of reporters and staffers demanding the firing or reprimand of colleagues who’d made politically “problematic” editorial or social media decisions.
The New York Times, the Intercept, Vox, the Philadelphia Inquirier, Variety, and others saw challenges to management.
Probably the most disturbing story involved Intercept writer Lee Fang, one of a fast-shrinking number of young reporters actually skilled in investigative journalism. Fang’s work in the area of campaign finance especially has led to concrete impact, including a record fine to a conservative Super PAC: few young reporters have done more to combat corruption.
Yet Fang found himself denounced online as a racist, then hauled before H.R. His crime? During protests, he tweeted this interview with an African-American man named Maximum Fr, who described having two cousins murdered in the East Oakland neighborhood where he grew up. Saying his aunt is still not over those killings, Max asked:
“I always question, why does a Black life matter only when a white man takes it?… Like, if a white man takes my life tonight, it’s going to be national news, but if a Black man takes my life, it might not even be spoken of… It’s stuff just like that that I just want in the mix.”
Shortly after, a co-worker of Fang’s, Akela Lacy, wrote, “Tired of being made to deal continually with my co-worker @lhfang continuing to push black on black crime narratives after being repeatedly asked not to. This isn’t about me and him, it’s about institutional racism and using free speech to couch anti-blackness. I am so fucking tired.” She followed with, “Stop being racist Lee.”

BillT 743am – Mr Tozer, I believe that is their Fairness Doctrine, always has been. I have found their words to make perfect sense when I remember that they oppose the Constitution, especially in all of its provisions that limit the power of government (which is its raison d’etre).

re: This post’s sub header quote:
“Beware of people who need outliers to make their point, and then use these to cloud the big picture.”
CHRONICLES OF THE CRAZY TIMES (4)
“Days of Rage is simultaneously disturbing and annoying. It’s disturbing because of the remarkable combination of stupidity, ignorance, and arrogance shown by these extremists. Absolutely nothing they did helped bring about a more equitable or compassionate country (leftist terrorism was even more destructive in Italy and Germany). Yes, they inspired a lawless reaction from the Nixon administration and the FBI, which resorted to criminal behavior of its own to stamp them out. And yes, they captured the occasional headline—most spectacularly when three members of the Weather Underground blew themselves up in a Greenwich Village townhouse. But every time they called for solidarity from those they considered natural allies—the poor, the oppressed, the discriminated-against—they were met with apathy, and often contempt. . .
[T]he largely forgotten story in Days of Rage should lead us to ask—lest history repeat itself as violent farce—why the most extreme, however nutty, are so frequently able to hijack movements purporting to fight for social justice.”
I’ll offer an answer: because weak-minded liberals can’t stand up to the extremists in their midst.
