George Rebane

Motivated by the ongoing George Floyd protests cum riots, I renewed my interest in finding out more about Antifa โ€“ is it an organization or merely a movement of loosely coupled cells operating all over the country?  The discussions in our comment streams seem to divide along ideological lines โ€“ those leaning right see it as a formidable organization that rises to the occasion whenever thereโ€™s a political contention in the public forum; those leaning left characterize it as nothing more than a movement of some loosely formed groups of protesters against the countryโ€™s capitalist order.  In recent days Iโ€™ve received some informative emails from readers containing links to reports and commentaries that cover the waterfront on Antifa.  Here Iโ€™ll share a couple of them which I found more salient to my puzzling on the matter.

First some definitions:  A movement is a social cohort sharing an affinity to a set of beliefs and an overarching objective.  They usually express themselves in conjunction with other social gatherings, observances, and/or ad hoc events which may spontaneously/serendipitously arise.  A movement need not be organized around an enduring social structure.  An organization is a social order that has an enduring and labeled identity which is structured to achieve an objective summarized in a published mission statement, the accomplishment of which is through some known intermediate goals.  Organizations have a leadership hierarchy (e.g. board, executive management, operating managers, staff, โ€ฆ), a headquarters, established means of funding operations, membership, and a current agenda.  As they grow and gather steam, movements inevitably become organized in order to continue progress toward their overarching objective.

The following numbered points summarize my current take on Antifa โ€“

  1. The origins of Antifa can be traced to the post-Bolshevik movements to spread the communist revolution into western Europe during the 1920s, specifically to counter the fascist (national socialist) movements that started in Italy with the rise of Mussolini after he was expelled from the Italian Communist Party.
  2. Antifa members held a loosely defined and contradictory political ideology that welcomed both anarchists and Marxist/Leninist communists. The anarchists wanted to do away with all government immediately, and the communists wanted big governments to control all aspects of society.  But we recall that the Marxโ€™s stated ultimate objective was a social order in which the perfected communist Man would live in social harmony without further need for government.  So in that sense Antifa could attract both anarchists and communists to work together toward an ultimate common goal, the timing of which they could quibble over after the established โ€˜fascist social ordersโ€™ were overthrown.
  3. Antifa divides people into anti-fascists, fascists, and those who are ideologically innocent/naรฏve. Fascism is never given a precise operational definition, but is simply defined as being anything and everything that opposes the Antifa objectives and methods.
  4. The acknowledged and taught MO to achieve Antifa objectives is through violence that is justified because Antifa members consider all opposition to their creed to also be expressions of violence.
  5. The Antifa movement never became a stable organization in Europe or in its spread to the US. It arose here and there to oppose fascism in pre-WW2 Europe and was ruthlessly put down by the Nazis.
  6. Antifa has made itself known through protest demonstrations of opportunity over the last decades by joining the ranks of non-violent protesters and then turning the protests into violent riots by instigating assaults on police, arson, looting, and generally creating opportunistic mayhem. Their intent is to project the image that the entire protesting cohort in the streets share their objectives and violent means of achieving them.
  7. No overarching Antifa organization has been identified in the US. However, there are several Antifa cells that have names and aggressively operate in various cities and regions of our country.  Today they are very active during the ongoing George Floyd protests, successfully having turned most of them into destructive riots.
  8. Antifaโ€™s published leaflets and online proclamations declare its fundamental opposition to property, established legal order, capitalism, individual rights and freedom, religion, and constitutional government. The underlying objective of all their activities is the ultimate destruction of the United States of America, their greatest worldwide evil against which all means and methods are justified.
  9. โ€œAntifa activists communicate and recruit mostly through social media, using Facebook as their principal forum for organizing protests.โ€ Antifa cells receive money for recruiting and operations through a number of listed leftwing, pro-socialist organizations funded by prominent hard-left personages (e.g. George Soros and various entertainers).
  10. The main source of new Antifa members is from the constituents of the Democratic Party. The Dems and their lamestream media provide the political support for Antifa, mischaracterizing them as โ€˜protestersโ€™, never calling them rioters, and minimizing reports of their violence and destruction.  And when all else fails, Antifa is portrayed as being in the streets to justifiably oppose โ€˜rightwing anarchistsโ€™ and โ€˜white nationalistsโ€™ who are the real fascists and instigators of the riots.
  11. The Democratic Party sees Antifa as a cohort of useful idiots that today function to keep alive the more visible and virulent forms of anti-Trump sentiments without having to expose themselves as militantly in the streets seeking to bring about their advertised โ€œfundamental transformationโ€ of America. More importantly, Antifaโ€™s message to the minorities reinforces the Democratsโ€™ decades-long narrative that our Hispanics and African-Americans continue as perpetual victims of corporate America and racist whites.
  12. There is a lot written about Antifa. From my readings, the two most informative that I found are โ€˜Project Veritas: Antifa Operates Like a Businessโ€™ and โ€˜A Communist & Anarchist Movement That Explicitly Endorses Violenceโ€™.

[8jun20 update]  The Antifa Manual.  Over the last week Iโ€™ve received several emails with what is purported to be the manual for Antifa members that outlines its ideology and the modus operandi of its street operations.  At first I hesitated to post it for several reasons that made me doubt its authenticity, primarily the variations in the writing style and a very naรฏve composition/structure.  It looks like it was meant to communicate the evils of Antifa to people unfamiliar with the movement.  In any event, whatever its provenance, someone went to some trouble to make the document look like the real deal.  You can download it and make up your own mind.  Download Antifa-Manual

[9jun20 update]  Noted WSJ columnist Bill McGurn joins many nationwide observers of how the peaceful protests have been co-opted by violent thugs, most of whom pledge their allegiance to the many Antifa cells that supply rioters to the various George Floyd demonstration venues.  In his โ€˜Mayhem is the Messageโ€™, McGurn writes โ€“ โ€œIf justice for George Floyd is the goal, many cannot fathom how it makes any sense to trash already-vulnerable neighborhoods, kill other African-American men in the process, and destroy black-owned stores that, as former President Barack Obama just pointed out, may never come back. But it makes perfect sense if the goal is to indict America as fatally compromised by racism since birth. And if the mayhem provokes authorities such as Mr. Trump into further inflaming the situation, so much the better.โ€

And then thereโ€™s CNNโ€™s Chris Cuomo, the idiot brother of New Yorkโ€™s governor, who pours gasoline on the fire with his, โ€œPlease, show me where it says protests are supposed to be polite and peaceful.โ€  The dufus totally misses that โ€˜polite and peacefulโ€™ is how the lamestream, led by his employer, has been characterizing the riots.  Todayโ€™s perversity of the Left includes the observation by Scott Walker of the Capital Research Center that โ€œRadical mobs on campuses call speech they donโ€™t like โ€˜violence,โ€™ โ€ while โ€œRadical mobs in the streets call their violence โ€˜speech.โ€™ Either way, instead of highlighting the difference between peaceful protesters and rioters, they want to erase it.โ€  The reasonable voices from the black community are always few and hard to hear over those screeching victimhood, but three intellectual giants stand out โ€“ Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Shelby Steele.  African-Americans would fare far better following their counsel, instead of divisive demogauges like Sharpton and Jackson.

Getting back to antifa – There seems to be organization and mobilization with a core group, but a lot of them are weekend warriors. There’s a riot and the cool thing to imagine yourself to be is ‘antifa’.
You get to mingle with the hard core ones and throw some rocks and smash windows, but the next day it’s back to smoking dope and playing video games in mom’s basement.

There have always been those groups George. It was only 100 years ago that in white vigilantes slaughtered 300 African Americans and destroyed their entire town. It was called the Tulsa Race Massacre. That was an Anti American act, as you put it, that has been swept away but comes to the surface when the fires are lit as they have been in the last couple if weeks.

Note to the new red guard Delroy Murdoc is black –
The looting and riots that roared out of the George Floyd protests were surprising. The leftโ€™s celebration of this violence is shocking.
What follows are not the reckless rants of basement-dwelling, boxer-short-clad, baby Bolsheviks. Rather these are the words and actions of elected and appointed Democratic officials, top activists, and their comrades in the liberal establishment media.
These leading leftists encouraged, enabled and empowered people who decided to riot after they saw four Minneapolis cops go low as one officer knelt on Floydโ€™s neck for nearly nine minutes and killed him on Memorial Day, while the other cops did nothing to stop the killing. All four now-fired officers face charges of second-degree murder or aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
HUNDREDS MOURN DAVID DORN, RETIRED ST. LOUIS POLICE CAPTAIN KILLED IN LOOTING
โ€œA once in a lifetime opportunity,โ€ is how Democratic Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey described the subsequent rioting. โ€œYes, America is burning, but thatโ€™s how forests grow.โ€

Northern Idaho gets all the bad press on militias and survivalists, but it stretches all the way into the Washington back country. When I was stealing…I mean, repatriating vehicles for the banks, we had a few jobs around Okanogan and Omak. It was common courtesy to stop at the local cop shop to let them know we were professional thieves.’ not just the usual scum.
On one such trip we talked to the officer on night shift about the gun crazies out in the woods.
“Yeah, you hear gunfire up there all the time. We leave them alone unless they come into town and get drunk. We take their guns and let them sleep it off.In the morning they’re gone.”
We did tend to be nervous after that, but we drove in, grabbed a pick up and scooted back to Yakima. The guy never woke up.

Slap Happy, โ€œDo you think she would have called the cops if Floyd was a white guy?โ€œ
Who knows. Everytime a counterfeit bill is passed in this neck of the woods it makes the local Police Blotter. Yes, the clerk called and describes a man disoriented (loaded), dropping things from his pocket, who just a passed fake bill(s). That is not why George died. Like the Freddie Grey (?) case where the fat man died for selling individual cigs and CDโ€™s in front of a store. The store called 911 (again) on him. What, blame the store clerk? The police get a call in Minneapolis. What, you want the police not to respond when someone calls 911? Donโ€™t work that way. Blame the caller? Come on Slappy, blame the caller or say she is a racist? Get a grip on yourself.
Bottomline: Nobody here or anywhere I have seen, heard, or read (again, nobody anywhere) has defended that copโ€™s actions. Itโ€™s a non-issue. It happened. The cop will go to trial under murder charges. Right now, the prosecution thinks he will get a conviction on 2nd Degree murder. 1st degree murder might be a bar too high. Either way, they ainโ€™t going to ever let him out. And everyone assumes George was killed because and only because he was black. It you got a bad cop, donโ€™t matter what skin color the deceased is or was. Gotta wait to see what comes out in trial.
What I donโ€™t buy is this BS mantra I hear that black mothers across the land are afraid that their kids will be shot by the police walking home from school. That simply does not happen. I call bullshit. Oh, black mothers are afraid from their kids safety in walking home from school in crime infested neighborhoods and communities for sure, but it is out of fear of gangs, dope dealers, and fucked up in the head people, not the police.
What happened to George Whatzername is a rare occurrence. According to the Wa Post, 18 times a year (last two years average, 19 and 17). We do not know the circumstances, just the totals. Of that 18, ten were black. Of that ten, 9 were male. So, of the thousands upon thousands of police interactions with their communities, an unarmed black male was killed 9 times. Get that number down to 5, and it becomes statistically insignificant. And the chances of a cop being killed on duty is 18 fold the number of police on citizen deaths.
Black mothers afraid their children will get shot by police walking to school? Yes, fear is an evil and horrible thread. So is envy. Worse that stealing.
Oh, I believe strongly Antifa is real. Project Veritas tapes are pretty good, but I have only seen one. I did not post this before because Dr. Rebane covered it in his post on the subject quite well.

Oh, Emery! 7:14 – Thanks for displaying your profound ignorance.
As in: Paul Emery is simply ignorant.
Numero uno – “Do you think she would have called the cops if Floyd was a white guy?”
Oh no, Paul – white folk can pass bogus bills at their leisure and no one would ever think of calling the cops.
Say – why don’t you try it some time, Paul? You would be quickly disabused of your position.
Numero two-o – “Do you really think a white man would have been strangled by police in Minneapolis like George Floyd was?” By THAT cop? Hard to tell. Sometimes cops just blow innocent white folks’ brains out. Sometimes the white suspect is just “found unresponsive”.
The problem is rooting out bad cops and holding them responsible for their misdeeds.
The cops were fired instantly. The cop that killed Floyd was charged as soon as the autopsy was complete. More charges are pending. There will be accountability. There is nothing to protest. Nothing. If you want to go back a hundred years and start bitching, there is one hell of a lot more than just one town and 300 people to account for.
Not that Paul Emery would know.
The folks rioting and burning and looting are criminals. They have no complaint.
    None.
You soy-boys can bow to the thugs, but don’t expect the rest of the country to.
I would suggest that everybody better just calm down and get back to their normal business. Pushing this further will result in something you leftys will be damned sorry to see.

At this point in time, Antifa and BLM are a distinction without a difference. Seattle:
โ€œFor the past week, Black Lives Matter and Antifa-affiliated activists have engaged in a pitched battle with Seattle police officers and National Guard soldiers in the neighborhood, with the heaviest conflict occurring at the intersection of 11th and Pike, where law enforcement had constructed a barricade to defend the Seattle Police East Precinct building. Hoping to break through the barricade, protesters attacked officers with bricks, bottles, rocks, and improvised explosive devices, sending some officers to the hospital. At the same time, activists circulated videos of the conflict and accused the police of brutality, demanding that the city cease using teargas and other anti-riot techniques.
Then, in a stunning turn of events, the City of Seattle made the decision to abandon the East Precinct and surrender the neighborhood to the protesters. โ€œThis is an exercise in trust and de-escalation,โ€ explained Chief Carmen Best. Officers and National Guardsmen emptied out the facility, boarded it up, and retreated. Immediately afterward, Black Lives Matter protesters, Antifa black shirts, and armed members of the hard-Left John Brown Gun Club seized control of the neighborhood, moved the barricades into a defensive position, and declared it the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zoneโ€”even putting up a cardboard sign at the barricades declaring โ€œyou are now leaving the USA.โ€….
โ€œThe city government has not developed a strategic response to the takeover of Capitol Hill. According to one Seattle police officer with knowledge of internal deliberations, the cityโ€™s โ€œleadership is in chaosโ€ and โ€œthe mayor has made the decision to let a mob of 1,000 people dictate public safety policy for a city of 750,000.โ€ The officer said that Chief Best had dispatched high-ranking police officials to the autonomous zone to establish a line of communication, but the officials were immediately sent away by armed paramilitaries at the barricades. โ€œThe tide of public opinion is on the side of the activists and theyโ€™re pushing the envelope as far as they can,โ€ said the officer. โ€œItโ€™s not hyperbolic to say the endgame is anarchy.โ€

I’m not disputing the election, just the bizarre behavior that followed it. In any rational world he would have carted off to the funny farm months ago. I’ve always believed Republicans would go off the deep end at some point, but I thought they’d go for someone less threatening, like Larry the Cable Guy.
Still, reality being what it is, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Trump gets reelected. The Democrats have a bad habit of alienating voters just at the wrong time.

How many hundreds of hours of anti-Trump video would you like to see?
Seriously, dig a little deeper into your attitudes. Any chance you are accusing others of the faults in yourself?
When the evil Republicans start burning down cities, looting stores, instantly firing people for wrongthink on social media, etc. you’ll start making more sense.

In a rational world, Trump, AFTER ELECTION, would have been treated as the President. Given the powers granted him by the Constitution.
Do we all remember your ‘toon showing the awful Stephen Miller as an even more awful little Joe Goebbels?
After three years, Trump’s order has been upheld as lawful.
