[What remains the point of debates which are empty of citations that are commonly accepted by the debating parties? As I have pontificated here for some years, and am now joined by my betters like Victor Davis Hanson among others, we are so polarized that we no longer share any cognitive common ground. In other words, we arrive at venues like RR, not only with our own opinions, but also with our own unique ‘facts’ (thereby giving lie to Sen Moynihan’s dictum). The ensuing melee is then composed of nothing but ejecta of hot air flung at the other which make no lasting impact, let alone changing anyone’s beliefs. And yet, … and yet we continue to regularly assemble on both sides of this arena to dance our ferocious dances, making threatening sounds while shaking our spears and shields at the other side, like the natives of primitive tribes or beasts of the jungle that learned to wage faux ‘wars’ without really harming each other. Realizing this, perhaps we can all join in the attempt to discover the point of it all. gjr]

Are you saying, good doc, not to feed the trolls, or just it’s a complete waste of time and energy?
The Russians are behind all the looting, Susan Rice said this morning. I can hear the trolls now chanting in unison, “I believe her.” Yep, Susan Rice said the Russians are causing the riots because of their social media meddling. And somewhere out there in lala land, some Talking Heads believe her and her narrative will be considered fact
I don’t think Susan Rice is correct about the Russians. The evidence is clear that it’s the Democrats out their looting. Free stuff has always been in the Lefties’ blood. It’s their bread and butter, their reason for living.

“As America’s problems continue to get worse, and Donald Trump continues to provide no leadership or solutions, his poll numbers continue to drop. So now he’s trying his latest desperate stunt in the hope of getting back into election contention.
This afternoon Trump declared on Twitter that “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization.” That’s cute, but there are two fundamental problems here. The first is that, to hear Trump tell it, “Antifa” is a far-left domestic terrorist organization based in the United States. But various legal experts have pointed out that under U.S. law, the government can’t declare any domestic group to be a terrorist group. So Trump’s “designation” is nonsense that he can’t actually act on.
The second and bigger problem for Donald Trump is that “Antifa” basically doesn’t exist. Who are its leaders? There aren’t any. Where is it based? Nowhere. What acts of terrorism has this group committed? None. “Antifa” is essentially just a leftover name from the World War II era (it literally stands for “anti-fascist”), and conspiracy theory lunatics like Donald Trump Jr like to throw the term around at anyone on the left they don’t like.
It’s not as if Donald Trump’s stooge Bill Barr can round up “Antifa leaders” who don’t exist, and charge them for “terrorist attacks” that don’t exist. Trump is gambling that by pretending to designate an imaginary entity as a terrorist group, Americans at large will naively believe that he’s doing something to make things better. No one outside his own base is that stupid. And as his worsening numbers keep showing us, Trump can’t win in November with his base alone. There’s a reason most people are making fun of Trump over this: it’s a feeble attempt at changing the narrative that won’t make a dent, except to make him look even more stupid.”

“I thought Sarah Huckabee Sanders was the greatest White House press spokesperson of all time because of the way she treated the press corps (that’s pronounced “core,” Mr. Obama) like unruly and slow-learning kindergarten kids, as they deserve to be treated. But Kayleigh McEnany has turned it up to 11, not only treating the press corps like children, but as the enemy as well, which they are. And note the left dare not make the charge that she is a bimbo—though you know they really want to—lest they fall afoul of charges of sexism. Remember when the media complained that the White House had discontinued the daily press briefing? Yeah, I’m betting they regret that right now.
Oh, and Joe Biden had another great week in his basement. Not.”

Pretty simple George-did Bush show leadership during the time leading up to the recession and did Trump fail in his promise to provide a balanced budget aided by his tax cuts and did he fail in his promise to cut back on the debt instead contributing an additional 5 trillion to the total. How can I make it more simple than that? A simple answer will do.

Perfesser Emery,
Before you start lecturing Dr. Rebane’s guests on history, you might want to take a refresher course yourself. George and Gregory have already wasted the time to straighten you out on the economic downturns, so I’ll just rub your nose in it a bit by pointing out that you went off track with your first comment about “Teapot Dome”: As it happens, that wasn’t an event under silent Cal, but Harding.
It’s bad enough to misstate the distant past, but your ignorance about the guilty parties in 2008 is inexcusable, as clearly explained by Gregory. Will his lesson sink in, or will you be right back tomorrow making the same false accusation? Why ask?- of course you will.

You are correct L. The hangover of the scandal tarnished Coolidge after he took office when Harding died in 1923. They were all Republicans-Harding, Coolidge then Hoover from 1921 thru 1933 so my contention that it was all Republican Presidents-12 years- that led up to the depression is verified.
Republican Presidents all were in office when all three economic disasters happened.

re MaryW 350pm – Well sumbich, thought it would never happen, but this leftwing sackhead and I finally agree on Antifa. Antifa is really nothing but a label for distributed extreme leftwing conduct in the public arena. There is nothing centralized or organized about it. One group of leftwing radicals sees what another has done in at some event, and they copy it as ‘best practices’, therefore both looking alike to the casual observer. That kind of ‘monkey see, monkey do’ conduct is baked into human action, both for good and evil. Were there any leadership or mother temple for Antifa, the feds would have been all over it long ago like ugly on a bear’s ass. Unfortunately, our president is not being properly advised on the matter, and therefore provides more ammo for his enemies by shooting from the lip. Or could it be that he’s not listening to good advice on the matter? 😉

Anybody with an ounce of economics savvy and history knows that the Great Depression started when an overheated market correction was not salved by liquidity from the Fed, which then was still a young institution not certain of its bearings. Today the Fed knows exactly what to do to stop a plunging market by pumping extra dollars into the economy. It is the light thinkers and the union educated who today conveniently blame the whole thing on Hoover and any other Republican president they can lay their hands on. Hoover tanked it, FDR fixed it – easy money. What’s your next slogan?

The Republicans were not responsible for what led up to the Depression but Roosevelt and the Democrats were responsible for the way they handled the recovery. Also Bush was not responsible for the Great Recession but Obama was responsible for the debt and slow recovery.
Also Trump was not responsible for the current recession and neither is he responsible for the likely 5 trillion in debt in his first and likely only term.
Also Nixon was a small time petty amateur crook (as well as Agnew) but Obama and Biden are the real deal when it came to corruption.

As you fine gentlemen and scumbag debate multi-faceted issues of the past, it may serve y’all well to take things in their historical context. The definitions of what is a Republican and what is a Democrat have changed over the years. JKF’s famous speech, ‘Ask not what your country can do you, but ask what you can do for your country’ today would be considered heartless, devoid of compassion, and some Right Wing “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” angry old white man rhetoric. Not very progressive.
Not all things have changed. Was it FDR or Wilson who ordered the military re-segregated? Wasn’t it Al Gore’s daddy the Dem senator who vigorously opposed segregation? Yep, some things don’t change.
Today, the Dems do not believe in the American Dream for all. If they did, there would be protests across the nation decrying policies that exclude Asian Americans via discriminatory admission policies at Harvard, the UC Regents, and New York City in Advanced Placement Public Schools.
Today a “Democrat” is anti-free speech.
Which President do we blame for the Dust Bowl? Happened on somebody’s watch.
