[What remains the point of debates which are empty of citations that are commonly accepted by the debating parties? As I have pontificated here for some years, and am now joined by my betters like Victor Davis Hanson among others, we are so polarized that we no longer share any cognitive common ground. In other words, we arrive at venues like RR, not only with our own opinions, but also with our own unique ‘facts’ (thereby giving lie to Sen Moynihan’s dictum). The ensuing melee is then composed of nothing but ejecta of hot air flung at the other which make no lasting impact, let alone changing anyone’s beliefs. And yet, … and yet we continue to regularly assemble on both sides of this arena to dance our ferocious dances, making threatening sounds while shaking our spears and shields at the other side, like the natives of primitive tribes or beasts of the jungle that learned to wage faux ‘wars’ without really harming each other. Realizing this, perhaps we can all join in the attempt to discover the point of it all. gjr]

Wilson introduced us to the joys of socialism after getting us into a war we could easily have avoided and would have been better off having stayed out of. He did nothing to prevent the punitive treaty that led directly to WWII.
Roosevelt let the Great Depression go on for nine years, ending it by maneuvering us into World War II which lead to the 45-year Cold War which the Dems did their best to lose.
Truman got us into the Korean War without the slightest idea for ending it; fortunately Ike had some ideas.
Kennedy and Johnson needlessly got us into Vietnam, again without the faintest notion of how to end it.
Carter mismanaged the economy into record breaking stagflation and left 100+ hostages in Iran for more than a year, set loose the day Reagan took office.
Clinton managed to ignore the increasing levels of terrorism, did nothing about Saddam’s continuous aggression and snuck out just ahead of the ball going up on 9 11.
Obama promised to end the rising seas, but instead gave us more softness on terror, including Benghazi, invited Russia back into the middle east, permitted the rise of Isis and signed two treaties- Paris climate, Iran nuke- that were both so against the American interest that he dared not submit them for approval. His cherry on top was to organize and orchestrate our nation’s first coup attempt against his sucessor.
See how easy that is, dope? Analysis, it isn’t.

The country was in better shape after Roosevelt than Hoover. Can we agree on that? We were in great shape after Truman despite the Korean War. Not so good after Kennedy and Johnson but in great economic shape after Clinton-almost a balanced budget. Then we have the dregs of the Bush II, massive recession and two endless unfunded wars as well as being asleep at the wheel on 9/11. Obama had modest but steady growth and no new wars so we were much better off than when he took office and now we have a massive recession (depression?) and historic unemployment and Trumps historic mishandling of the pandemic. He’s sure to be one termer. It can be argued that Bush and Trump are the two worst Presidents in modern history next to Nixon who is in a category all his own. Republicans all
That leaves only Eisenhower and Reagan as being somewhat successful two termers since and including Hoover.

Gregory 508pm – We circled this barn many times, and I’m just getting a bit older and more tired I guess. Your topical comments belong under the most recent commentaries that I post on the same topics. They are Sandbox material only if there is nothing similar/same nearby that I have posted on. Most certainly giving an indication that you don’t read what I write (whether you agree or not) makes me wonder why you’re here. I provide the Sandbox as a Lucky Strike extra for topics that I don’t cover and readers still want to talk about. I then take the extra time to read all of your comments. But if any readers who don’t give a shit about what I write, then that game can be reciprocated. Otherwise I’d like to maximize the collection of comments under my topical commentaries. And I also think that water is wet.

PaulE 421pm – Country better off after FDR than Hoover? You’re kidding, right? But then, maybe it’s been a while since you peeked at a history book, or read extensive posts on it on RR. Depending on which “after FDR” you’re talking about. In 1939 the country’s unemployment rate was (over 20%) about the same as when FDR took office in 1933. I’ve recounted many times SecTreas Morgenthau’s 1938 testimony to Congress. FDR didn’t have a clue how to stop the Depression, and desperately needed WW2 to put people back to work.
And no one can compare being asleep at the switch as much as was FDR on 7 December 1941 – this after almost everyone and their brother in the country (and Europe) told him that the Japs (yes, they were Japs then) were going to attack (he could even see the smoke from their embassy as they were burning papers on 5 and 6 December). NO ONE in the world knew that a bunch of ragheads would commit suicide by flying airliners into buildings on 11 September 2001. That was a desperate and pathetic charge you made against Bush2 that demonstrates your ‘analysis’ was really firing blanks. (Thanks to Gregory, I didn’t know your little little 137pm list was an analysis.)
And after WW2 was over (FDR died in April 1945), all of FDR’s brain trust rushed into Truman’s office to assure the new president that FDR’s post-war plan was to reinstate all the Depression-era alphabet soup programs to continue the handouts and therefore continue the Depression. It was Harry’s immortal rejection of the whole shebang, and turning loose the economy that saved it with just a micro-recession that occurred in 1946 when millions of servicemen were discharged into the workforce.
You liberals have a real jaundiced picture of what happened in America, and your unionized government schools have perpetuated that dumbth in spades.

It was during Hoovers administration that the Depression and stock market crash happened just like it was on Bush’s watch that the Great Recession happenned and under Trump that this recession-possible depression occurred. All Republicans.
It was a failure of intelligence under Bush and earlier Clinton that did not discover the 9/11 plot. I mean several of the pilots openly enrolled in pilots school as documented by this link. Isn’t it the job of our intelligence agencies to discover these things? It was under Bush’s watch therefore he’s responsible.

“NO ONE in the world knew that a bunch of ragheads would commit suicide by flying airliners into buildings on 11 September 2001.” Are you being facetious? While no one seemed to know exactly when and where, there were leads that if pursued could have uncovered the plot. It was known by law enforcement that Arab nationals with sketchy backgrounds were taking flight lessons. One instructor even stated that the students were not very interested in how to land. There are many documentaries on the subject, ranging from very conspiratorial to interviews and account from investigators and others with knowledge. There was a lot of noise at the time about the various intelligence agencies not communicating and if they had been, perhaps the event could have been curtailed.

Daily quotes and a meme. Last quote is good per usual.
Upright: “We know that the coronavirus is highly contagious. So, too, are optimism, courage and action. We should be optimistic about the future. Americans have historically been inventive, creative and persistent. … There is always a third, fourth or fifth option. We just have to figure them out.” —Jackie Gingrich Cushman
For the record: “Photo ID is probably the vote-integrity measure that garners the most vocal opposition. Democrats routinely oppose photo ID laws, claiming that voting is too important a right to be subject to such restrictions, and that photo ID laws impermissibly discriminate against minorities, the elderly and the homeless. In the era of COVID-19, the hypocrisy of that argument is made clear. I looked for states that have imposed photo ID requirements for COVID-19 testing and found plenty… Not only are such tests often a matter of life and death but the populations that have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus also include minorities, the elderly and the homeless.” —Laura Hollis
Non compos mentis (verbatim): “They looting in Minnesota and as much as I don’t like this type of violence it is what it is .Too much peaceful marches, too much trending hashtags and NO SOLUTIONS! The people are left with NO CHOICE .” —rapper Cardi B
Misdirection: “All [social-media platforms] want is to not pay taxes. And they don’t want to be regulated, so they pander to the White House. You see what Facebook’s Zuckerberg is saying today about all this. He just panders.” —House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
Non sequitur: “White men … can get armed up and walk into a state capitol, and that’s okay. And the police are benign. They don’t even act afraid. But let black people show up and protest the death of an innocent black man and suddenly … we gotta go full force.” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid
Village idiot: “Until we can overcome Racism in America — no one should be allowed to carry a gun. Most of all cops.” —Madonna

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump is trusted more than Democratic nominee Joe Biden to handle the economy, polls show, even with more than 40 million Americans filing jobless claims and growth stalled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Some Biden supporters fear that vulnerability could intensify if Trump becomes the face of an economic recovery as the country re-opens after shutdowns, giving the Republican president’s re-election prospects a boost
