[It’s remarkable how well these C19 utility functions perform in their ability to predict the statements – ranging from policies to pabulum – of the three cohorts today exhorting us to do this vs that.

C19utilitiesFor those comfortable with such models of the realworld, they compress a whole lot of explanatory power about the debate to loosen the lockdown. (more here).  gjr]

“Many in Harrisburg wondered what kind of message it sends — when a close relative of the person tasked with overseeing those types of facilities doesn’t choose to stay in one,” ABC27 reported.
Levine, the state’s health secretary, has been under tremendous fire over the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s initial guidance, instructing nursing care facilities to readmit patients who were treated for the coronavirus and in “stable” condition, attributing the decision to leaving hospital beds open for an influx of virus patients.
Nursing care facilities must continue to accept new admissions and receive readmissions for current residents who have been discharged from the hospital who are stable to alleviate the increasing burden in the acute care settings. This may include stable patients who have had the COVID-19 virus.
Nursing homes in the state have been ravaged by the virus, with over two-thirds of the state’s overall coronavirus deaths stemming from individuals at nursing homes or personal care facilities.
Despite issuing such a directive, Levine removed her own mother from a personal care home during the pandemic. Nearly 70 percent of the state’s coronavirus fatalities, 2,611 of 3,806, have stemmed from such facilities, the state’s health department data shows.

Oh yes young lady, move right to the head of the line –
Former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power sought to obtain Michael Flynn’s redacted identity using an “unmasking” request on at least seven occasions, according to newly declassified list of names released Wednesday — even though Power testified under oath before the House Intelligence Committee that she had “no recollection” of ever making such a request even once.
While sensitive requests to “unmask” individuals — revealing their identity on a need-to-know basis after the intelligence community intercepts their communications — are not necessarily improper, the records raised new concerns over exactly who might have leaked details of the Flynn investigation to The Washington Post in January 2017.
That leak apparently was illegal, given national security laws and the classified nature of the Flynn probe. In early January 2017, President Obama loosened rules governing the sharing of intelligence information within the federal government — which Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said was intended to “pave the way for a shadow government to leak classified information” more easily.

re “hard pressed” Mary 411pm – The problem, as multiple investigations have shown, is that Flynn was not guilty of ANY collusion, illegal relationship, or untoward interaction with the Russians. Obama knew that because his own FBI told him so. In spite of this, his warning to Trump about Flynn was a cynical bald-faced lie to discredit and get Flynn out of government because he knew too much of what went down during Obama’s watch. That much is documented to date; more to come.

CNN Buries Its Own Poll Results on Trump’s Favorability. Guess Why.
Well, that’s interesting, I thought, as I noted that the RealClearPolitics homepage stated that President Trump was tied for his all-time high in CNN polling. Then I went over to the CNN homepage for confirmation. Guess what I found?
The main story was about a church that lost 44 parishioners to COVID-19. The second-most prominent story told us that “Grocery Prices Are Soaring” (which is true if you think that a 2.6 percent increase in April should be called “soaring”), the third-most-prominent item told us, “Doctors treating coronavirus patients are seeing odd and frightening syndromes.” Running down the rail on the right we were given such important developments as “Man refusing to wear a mask breaks arm of Target employee,” “CNN Investigates: He’s willing to get Covid-19 to speed up vaccine efforts,” “Five surfers die after huge layer of sea foam hampers rescue” and “How coronavirus spread from one member to 87% of the singers at a choir practice.”
Only after all of this stuff did we learn that CNN has a new poll out, under the headline, “CNN Poll: Biden tops Trump nationwide, but battlegrounds tilt Trump.” Polls are expensive, news organizations tend to hype them breathlessly to generate headlines in rival media outlets, Wednesday was (obviously) a slow news day, and politics is one of CNN’s core topics. Yet CNN seemed oddly unenthused about its own poll. And the story to which the homepage linked doesn’t mention that Trump had never scored higher in a CNN poll. True, there are lots of noisy data in the piece, most of which cut against Trump. But on the other hand the single most surprising and hence most newsworthy detail of the poll was that Trump holds a seven-point lead over Biden in the battleground states. The CNN story doesn’t even tell us what that figure is — seven points seems like a pretty big number.

The GOP clinched major victories in two special elections held on Tuesday but was largely ignored by the mainstream media.
Mike Garcia managed to flip California’s 25th District, becoming the first Republican to do that in the state since 1998. Garcia, a former Navy combat pilot, was declared the winner on Wednesday after his Democratic challenger, state assemblywoman Christy Smith, conceded the race. The congressional seat was previously held by Rep. Katie Hill, who resigned last year.
Both Garcia and Smith will face off again in November.
Wisconsin state senator Tom Tiffany was able to maintain the GOP’s control over the state’s conservative-leaning 7th district left vacant by Rep. Sean Duffy.
MAINSTREAM MEDIA IGNORES, DOWNPLAYS DECLASSIFIED LIST OF OBAMA OFFICIALS WHO REQUESTED ‘UNMASKING’ OF FLYNN
Past special elections in recent memory generated plenty of news coverage, particularly when Democrats pick up congressional seats as pundits often hype that such victories are a “bellwether” for what’s to come in the upcoming elections.

    “Walt
I am opposed to suddenly reopening everything.”
    —-
I reject that premise. There is no ‘suddenly‘, be it concerts, sports venues, or what have you. There have been steps to the process. Each State is responsible for how they open up. CSU will not open for classes in the Fall Semester, save on-line instruction. Add our local schools. Nail salons to open in one State, not in another. Barber shops no go in one State, OK in another with guidelines.
-The big joke is since voting in person at a local precincts is now unsafe, then they should have move voting booths to Walmart and the Home Depot.
-If sheltering in place and wearing a mask works, then why have Democrats released thousands of felons “to keep them safe from the virus.”?
Bottomline. The pro-Home Detention forces have it covered. When things look like they are ready to ease restrictions and conditions met, they say “we can’t open up because of a Second Wave!” Heads I win, tails you lose. But…What about waiting for a vaccine in case there is a third wave!
Some States and jurisdictions actually believe folks will act reasonably and do the right thing…as most folks are already been doing. Others, be it a two bit mayor or county supervisor or State official or Governor have gone power mad and do not trust the people and delight in this opportunity to yield unprecedented power over people’s lives.
It’s ok to be concerned and take prudent measures. What I reject is 1) trampling on the Bill of Rights and 2) some idiot saying “SUDDENLY reopening EVERYTHING.”

  35. George Rebane Avatar

Apparently missed by all liberals in these comment streams –
    1. Fauci has not given any recommendations on loosening policies. He has ONLY cautioned that more second wave lives will be lost if we stand down too soon and rapidly – everyone knows that in principle. Fauci’s utility is shown above (the middle one), and he cares only about the near-term loss of life.
    2. No leftwinger admits to understanding that a nation with a destroyed economy will suffer more loss of life than experienced in a herd immunity terminated epidemic that is, perhaps, helped by a timely vaccine. There are two factors to be balanced in any sane policy – economy and mortality.
    3. Responses to all administration and states’ proposals and policies continue to be completely predictable – they benefit from maximizing the third utility.

Have to remember Bill that Punchy is an older man at this point…..everything seems “Suddenly” to him. I think the best course of action is him staying safe indoors and away from people (your prudent measures) until a vaccine is produced (if ever…..Coronaviridae……tough nut to crack I understand). He can order food in and minimize his risk.
He maintains his health….you guys don’t have to see him or hear him play…..and the rest of the world can try to get back to something approaching normalcy. Sounds like a win/win/win!

It’s allergy season coming, then it will be flu season. Just shut everything down from November to March. We must not have people suffering or dying. Dead is unacceptable. It is destroys millions of lives but saves just one life, then, by golly, it is worth it..

    Pivot to Obama-Bidengate.
So, it appears that some assistant director of the Energy Department sitting in his office reading transcripts of intercepts says, “Hey, who is this name of an US citizen who has been masked? I have a need to know, kinda, so let’s unmask this person. Just happened to be General Flynn, former head of the Defence Intelligence Agency.
So, some Ambassador to Italy and San Marino just happens to be randomly reading through reports intercepts of counter-Intelligence (out of boredom or something) and feels a name needs to be unmasked. What a coincidence. It just happens to be General Flynn.
A VP of the US, eight day before he leaves office, does something not in his duties as VP, asks for a name to be unmasked. You won’t believe this. The name unmasked is Michael Flynn. Another one of those great mysteries in life. Go figure.
From the beginning, it has been downright inconceivable to any rational mind that operations taken at the highest level of government (FBI, DOJ, NSA, CIA, DNI) against a political party’s nominee for President and fierce political opponent could not be undertaken without the President’s knowledge. Inconceivable.
It’s ok for a President to be informed and kept abreast. It is not ok for the West Wing to participate or coordinate or weaponize the US government against political opponents for purely partisan purposes.
