[While I'm much in favor of opening up the economy sooner than later, I can't understand the Trump/Cuomo pissing match now going on (here). The President is all wet in asserting that it is only he who gets "to call the shots" on opening up the country. The country was not 'closed' on the basis of some federal imperative, and so it does not stand that it awaits the President's removal of such a non-existent imperative. In the meanwhile, the governors are in charge of lawful public intercourse in their states. As usual, Trump is burning up political capital better put to use elsewhere, and the lamestream is eating it up. gjr]

But how about Trump’s best ever adminstration screw ups? Maybe we should care more about them.

Spell has come under fire for a series of controversial statements on the pandemic.
Last week, he urged followers to defy public health lockdowns and attend church service even if their lives are in danger, saying “Death is a welcomed friend.” This week, he also drew criticism for starting the social media campaign #PastorSpellStimulusChallenge, which urges people to send their $1,200 coronavirus stimulus checks to churches and missionaries rather than pay for food and bills.

Here’s my take for phase 2
1) people known to have an active SARS infection should be in quarantine. Involuntary if needed.
2) people afraid of the SARS du jour for whatever reason should be in voluntary seclusion.
3) everyone else, go about your business.
When it started, without a glimmer of hope for a treatment… my worry was that I or someone close to me would get the bug and require intensive care when the ICUs were full up. We are over that hump.

More on Pastor Spells:
“Spell has become a lightning rod for controversy after he defied bans on large-scale gatherings by holding packed services in his church during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spell also told his followers not to be afraid of dying from the virus, and even said that “death is a welcomed friend” for true believers.

Donb: “That report followed another study released last month by the Secure World Foundation, which stated countries around the world should not discount the reality that some bad actors may be stepping up both offensive and defensive measures in space.”
A ‘bad actor’ is in the eye of the beholder I guess.
It isn’t like ASAT development hasn’t been going on for decades. Hopefully it’s all less crude than the cannon that the Russians put in the Almaz.
Maryw: “But the space force, really?” So what then? Rocket Force? Really High in the Air Force?
You can make a case for them breaking off ICBMs from the AF in the way that the Soviets did, although I can see the difficulties in siloing off (so to speak) function into armed force branches.
Dunno what the fuss about the insignias is. The current one is just a variant of Air Force Space Command, which has the same arrowhead trope as Russian Space Forces used to have.

More bad news for the TDS set –
A Democratic strategist, speaking on condition of anonymity, described a private research initiative in which voters were shown a 90-second clip of a recent briefing. Trump’s general election performance against his likely Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, reportedly improved by more than two percentage points after voters watched the clip. Considering most polls are indicating a tight contest, that’s quite a shift after such a small amount of footage.

WATCH: AOC complains federal government not doing enough—while making a margarita
“I mean, honestly, have you ever had a point in your life where the federal government did too much for you,” she asked 8,600 fans watching while screwing the cap on the bottle, “where they gave you too much?”
“Never happened to me! I’ve never seen that in my lifetime. I never had too many scholarships, we never had too many people that got relief. Puerto Rico never got too much aid,” she said, measuring the lime juice. She proceeded to tell her viewers how to properly make a margarita, including how to put “a little stank on it.”

Insight: “The great inlet by which a colour for oppression has entered into the world is by one man’s pretending to determine concerning the happiness of another.” —Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
Editorial exegesis: “Some argue that withholding our funding of the WHO — $400 million a year — will hinder its international relief efforts. This is a legitimate concern, but the WHO’s missteps themselves hindered the fight against the pandemic at a critical stage. In any event, U.S. funding of pandemic relief does not depend on any single multilateral bureaucracy. In fact, the U.S. has already spent more than $500 million on foreign aid to combat the pandemic — roughly 25 percent of the WHO’s annual budget — on top of existing contributions to multilateral and nongovernmental organizations. … The more the World Health Organization capitulates to Chinese soft power, the less effective — and the less deserving of our support — it will be. The White House is right to bring serious pressure to bear to try to check this trend.” —National Review
Upright: “The PPP program is going to run out of funding soon — the Senate should approve add’l funding by unanimous consent ASAP. Small businesses need our help to survive during this emergency.” —Sen. Kyrsten Sinema
Alpha jackass: “The reason that we’re in the crisis that we are today is not because of anything that China did. It’s not because of anything WHO did. It’s because of what this president did.” —Sen. Chris Murphy
Now do welfare: “You all realize that check Treasury is sending you with Trump’s name scribbled on it is your money, right? It’s your tax dollars that Congress appropriated. Trump is basically the guy who ‘lends’ you back your own lawnmower he borrowed and has had at his house for months…” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid
Non compos mentis: “I wasn’t thinking of the Bill of Rights when we did this. … We looked at all the data and the science and it says people have to stay away from each other.” —New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy
Exactly — it’s a slippery slope toward dependency: “It is a funny moment because everyone wants to fight against these [socialist] policies until they have been personally impacted, and we’ve seen this not just economically, but we’ve also seen it in terms of social rights as well.” —Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
And last… “I think it is reasonable, given the new data showing people were already self-locking down, to put in place a plan to start reopening parts of the country on May 1st and trust people to use their best judgment.” —Erick Erickson

‘Stop the Virus Now, Save the Planet Later’
“When a team of environmental-health scientists from the University of Arizona and the Loma Linda University School of Public Health analyzed shoppers’ bags from supermarkets in Arizona and California, they found considerable amounts of bacteria in almost all the reusable bags, including fecal coliform bacteria in half the bags. Their study found no contamination in any of the new plastic bags handed out by the grocery stores.
Greens want to deny it, but there’s no doubt that the safest and easiest way to shop, and to eliminate germs lingering on bags or in food scraps or on recyclables, is to get a new plastic bag at the store and then toss it, along with everything else, into a sturdier plastic garbage bag that can be loaded on a truck and dumped by a machine into a landfill or an incinerator. There’s no need for consumers, workers, prisoners, or anyone else to sift by hand through that garbage—not now, and not after the pandemic is over, either.“

Your campaign donations at work: never missing an opportunity to grease one’s own wheels, the trump campaign is giving $15,000 a month, each, to those classic example of face lifts gone bad, Lara Trump and Kimberly Guilfoyle, significant others of the trump dynasty’s illiterate sons. Poor, what’s his name, Melania’s kid, is AWOL, God save Melania from the devil. Is he still alive or do they have him stashed away in some tower somewhere? One has to love all the angles the trump’s can think of to fleece the public, including their supporters.
