"A house divided against itself cannot stand." A. Lincoln

George Rebane

[This is the addended and updated transcript of my regular KVMR commentary broadcast on 5 February 2020.]

The nationally prominent public figure and liberal Daniel Patrick Moynihan gave us the well-known shibboleth that "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts."  Moynihan was a man of many talents, serving as adviser to several presidents of both parties, Harvard college professor, ambassador to India and the UN, and as a four-term senator from New York.  He died in 2003, a bit too early to witness the rejection and even falsification of what at first reading seems like an eminently reasonable and widely applicable statement.

Today in 2020 we have long acknowledged and adopted the existence of at least two sets of facts, held by each side of a deeply polarized country.  That we do not agree on the facts which support our stands on public policies is the prime reason why we can no longer emulate that great Texas politician and 36th US president Lyndon Johnson, when he would put his big arm around an uncompromising opponent’s shoulder and utter the biblical invitation from Isaiah to “Come now, let us reason together.”  But the prerequisite for reasoning together is to have some common ground that usually begins by accepting some common collection of critical facts.

The most recent confirmation of this ‘two nations in one country’ reality was on coast-to-coast display last night during President Trump’s state of the union speech.  As all presidents before him, Trump touted his administration’s accomplishments, citing supportive data, none of which was accepted by the Democrat members of Congress in attendance.  Their discomfort and dissent was visible to all, and visibly managed by Speaker Pelosi who sat prominently behind the President.  She then underlined our pervasive and persistent polarization by standing and dramatically tearing up her copy of the speech as the president’s presentation concluded – an historical bit of kabuki that highlighted impeachment as the latest widening of the chasm which already separates us beyond anyone’s ability or even desire to bridge the break.

Both parties and their loyal constituencies have their own ‘facts’ about almost everything and every issue that describes our country.  And we acquire these facts from very different sources, partisan sources that are not respected by the other party.  Our mainstream media has always been left-leaning, as reported by numerous studies over the years, and is now unabashedly the voice of the progressive Democratic Party.  What’s most disconcerting and divisive is that the MSM self-censors news that doesn’t support the Left’s narrative and worldview.

Examples of this abound, but a recent one is worth noting.  Judicial Watch is a conservative, non-partisan educational foundation that litigates and uses discovery to investigate and uncover misconduct and corruption by government officials and politicians.  In a January 2020 special report (‘Illegal Alien Criminals: A Serious Threat to Public Safety and National Security’), Judicial Watch documents from cited government sources the size and impact of criminal illegal aliens in America, and the progressive programs that shield and succor them in the various sanctuary jurisdictions nationwide.  The numbers will astonish you.  A couple from the tip of this mountain of information will serve.  From the most recent 2018 data available, Dept of Homeland Security reports that Hispanic aliens committed twice as many federal crimes as the did the white and black population segments combined.  The US Bureau of Prisons reports that almost 40% of inmates in their custody are known or suspected aliens.  The Department of Justice tells us that non-US citizens accounted for almost two out of three federal arrests in 2018.

These numbers are both hidden by the MSM and ignored by the Left, as it continues to promote porous border policies that invite and enable illegal entry of hordes of aliens who neither share our culture or values, and whose numbers include the thousands of criminals and terrorists in waiting who are sheltered in sanctuaries until some are caught and imprisoned, deported, or released to repeat their crimes.

We witness this daily as we see one polarized side doing its best to fundamentally transform an America that they hold to be an historical aberration of evil, and the other side fighting a losing battle to maintain the foundations of our exceptional nation that made it the shining beacon for the world.  Today these are the two irreconcilable nations within common borders that chafe ever more stridently against each other.

My name is Rebane, and I also expand on this and related themes on Rebane’s Ruminations where the addended transcript of this commentary is posted with relevant links, and where such issues are debated extensively.  However, my views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.  Thank you for listening.

[Addendum]  Another more local example of the Great Divide already present in our county is the rise of the Sunrise Movement organization as reported in the 5feb20 Union (here).  Their avowed purpose is to mobilize young people (primarily high schoolers) into “Strike Circles” who will then militate against “economic equality and environmental degradation.”  They vociferously support the Green New Deal as “an economic vision for the 21st century” that promises “millions of jobs across the country aiming to create, distribute and implement clean energy technology. The achievement and protection of clean air, water and food. Net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and the inclusion of poor communities in America’s post-modern economy.”

This is one more of the far-Left organizations of the naïve mobilizing the ignorant.  The movement’s “three prong strategy” consists of plans to “organize, vote (or promote voting), and strike.”  In Nevada County they are introducing their organization and hoping to set up one a local Strike Circle of young and intellectually innocent in time to participate in their national strike on Earth Day 22 April.

Given the aggregate academic stats for California’s public school students, it is highly likely that these young people are mostly reading-challenged and innumerate. They have no means of evaluating any climate related arguments.  (more here, here, and here)  But they do understand and respond to simplistic slogans, especially when presented with compelling graphics.  This approach has been the Left’s strategy for almost two hundred years, get them indoctrinated and signed up before they know anything about the realworld or how it works.

[6feb20 update]  Here is a prime example of the polarization of facts.  As these pages have archived, our liberal readers have continually countered the news and data available to all who can read that California has increasingly systemic problems with its economy, infrastructure, taxes, regulations, and an ongoing exodus of commerce and workers.  The leftwing mind can parse none of these facts, and instead, substitute their own, which characterize our state as the progressive paragon for the rest of the Union with its legal residents and illegal aliens happy dancing in the streets.

This is confirmed by none other than ex-NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg, on his way to buying the Democratic nomination for president, demonstrating once more that money is the mother’s milk of politics.  He tells his constituents, “I think that California can serve as a great example … something the rest of the country looks up to.”

In the realworld we have ‘Stinking, shrinking California vs. fantastic, flourishing Florida – A tale of two states’ wherein Ed Pozzuoli on Fox Business provides the data that underpins and explains what’s happening in the once golden state.  RR readers and most of the nation know that the source of this travesty is decades of one-party collectivist governance supported by a growing uninformed and ever more dependent electorate.  Once again we see that ‘if there’s a problem, first look to government as its cause’ – a fundamental tenet of Rebane Doctrine.

[7feb20 update]  Trump’s SOTUS was all lies declare the Dems led by Team Nancy.  This was their purported reason for their public pout during the speech, and now they’re convincing their light thinking constituents through their own lies about the event.  A more sober check of the important claims Trump made is contained in ‘Fact-checking 11 of Trump’s Claims in the State of the Union’.

Another topsy-turvy turn of facts is our progressives' spin of the ideal life in euro-socialist countries.  The reality about everything from healthcare, employment, social disharmony, and disappearance of longstanding cultural icons in these lands is either hidden by the lamestream from the American public, or just blatantly misrepresented so that the all-absorbing local lefties can tell their grassroots neighbors of the happy life across the sea which the current Dem clown car of candidates promises to replicate here.  A taste of this is documented in 'France Says Au Revoir to the Cafe'.

George, maybe you should ask Dear Leader why he would not let our intelligence services release the information??? Dr. Li knew about Corona Virus last year!!!

    More inconvenient facts –
The U.S. economy added 225,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate ticked up to 3.6.
Economists had expected the economy to add 160,000 jobs. December’s figure was revised up from 145,000 to 147,000.
The unemployment rate edged up because the labor force participation rate increased, meaning the strong labor market drew more people into the workforce. The participation rate rose to 63.4 percent in January, the best rate since the last recession.
The employment to population ratio for prime age workers rose to 80.6 percent, the highest since 2001.

CNN wouldn’t know a fact if it bit them on the ass. They got bit by their ‘fact checker’ –
CNN came under fire on Thursday when its in-house fact-checker reported President Trump “falsely claims former FBI Director James Comey admitted to leaking” when the liberal network had reported otherwise, and Comey, in fact, had admitted to leaking.

odlaw 1001am – and where’s the evidence that our intelligence services withheld that nascent info from anyone? You might also consider that in Dec2019 those few cases, even if the report were accessible, would have been one of a continuing plethora of infectious disease events popping up here and there all over the world all the time. There is some prudence involved in starting to holler wolf too early and too often, especially if the info is incomplete. However, such considerations are not accessible to those suffering from TDS.

odlaw 1101am – As soon as it leaked to the west, FN ran stories on Dr Li, and immediately ran panels on how the chicom govt had instantly dunned the physician and how Wuhan’s mayor shirked his reportin while waiting for Beijing to give its OK (which took over a week). The lamestream remained mum – i.e. censorship and control by the central govt is good, and we should have more of it here (especially if you listen to the clown car candidates) and their spiritual leaders like AOC.
And Trump started giving out federal leases for drilling almost immediately upon taking office. The clown car candidates are promising that they will stop all drilling on federal lands, and don’t even think about new leases.

Honestly, I’d say that it was fracking and a buncha other modern oil extraction and detection techniques that pulled it off. Hopefully the next President doesn’t make fracking illegal, although I’m afraid the Democrats are stupid enough to give it a shot. If so, so much for both the economy and greenhouse gas emissions.
It’s an area where there’s a clear difference between the two parties in 2020.

Its a fact that if you fail to kill the king there will be a price. Drain that swamp –
The deeper anxiety among many career national security officials is that Trump, feeling vindicated by the Senate’s acquittal, will act on long-harbored suspicions that bureaucrats at the State Department and the NSC are out to undermine his agenda.
Unburdened by impeachment, they fear that Trump could unleash his anger at the foreign policy establishment he’s long equated with what some of his advisers and supporters call the “Deep State.”

Re update Feb 6/20. Tale of two state or….Red States vs Blue.
    ‘Red v. Blues’
“Seismic shifts in economic and demographic power are occurring across America.”
    (First paragraphs)
“The political and cultural war between red and blue America may not be settled in our lifetimes, but it’s clear which side is gaining ground in economic and demographic terms. In everything from new jobs—including new technology employment—fertility rates, population growth, and migration, it’s the red states that increasingly hold the advantage.
Perhaps the most surprising development is on the economic front. Over the past decade, the national media, and much of academia, have embraced the notion that the future belonged to the high-tax, high-regulation economies clustered on the East and West Coasts. The red states have been widely dismissed, in the words of the New York Times, as the land of the “left behind.”
Yet the left-behind are catching up, as economic momentum shifts away from coastal redoubts toward traditionally GOP-leaning states. Just a few years ago, states like California, Massachusetts, and New York held their own, and then some, in measurements of income growth from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Now the fastest growth is concentrated in the Sunbelt and Great Plains. Texans’ income in the latest 2019 BEA estimates was up 4.2 percent, well above California’s 3.6 percent and twice New York’s 2.1 percent. The largest jumps—and this may matter a lot in 2020—took place in the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Iowa.“

And lest we forget, Obama in his speeches as POTUS talked about an energy dependent NORTH AMERICA when addressing the topic. I paid particularly close attention to the phrase “North America” when he discussed it. He included Mexico and Canada when talking oil production.
And lest we forget, the Obama Administration did basically nothing of substance on the domestic economy front after 2010. Giving credit to Obama ten years after 2010 is a stretch. And Obamacare care would be paid for by a 6% GDP this year, a 9% GDP in the following years by 2030….etc.
It’s a full time job to exaggerate Obama’s achievements while minimizing Trump’s achievements, aka, Protect Obama’s Legacy to take away from Trump’s magic wand.
How many regulations did Obama rescind during his years….or did he pile on regulation upon regulation upon regulation until the day he left office? Many experts point out that decreasing the regulatory environment has had just as big (if not bigger) affect on the economy as tax cuts.
And despite the moaning and groaning from the Hate America First crowd, the revenues to the Treasury are at all time highs.

This may be why the prism the left views the world through appears so dark –
Democrats are among the demographic groups with the lowest personal satisfaction in their life, while Republicans are among the most satisfied, a Gallup poll revealed Thursday.
Gallup broke its survey sample into 21 different subgroups, and among them Democrats ranked next to lowest in their personal satisfaction level. The only subgroup to express lower personal satisfaction was the demographic of those earning less than $40,000 a year.
Republicans by contrast were the second most satisfied subgroup of the 21, falling only behind the group with a yearly salary of more than $100,000. A full 80 percent of Republicans said they are “very satisfied” with their personal life, and 93 percent said they are “satisfied.”

Not Greta or green weenie stuff or BS about the environment or social justice or the earth coming to an end.
    POWER!
When the Dems listened to Carville, they got elected.
But Carville talks only about power. Not all the other BS the Dems are chattering about now.
Because POWER has always been what the Dems have been about.
And there is nothing more powerful than a govt.
Ask the Chinese and the Russians.
Oh – they’re all dead – 10s of millions of them.
    Guess you can’t ask them.

    DEEP THOUGHTS BY JAMES COMEY

Column: Attack of the ‘Fact Checking’ Clones
“David Harsanyi at National Review offered a terrific article just taking apart the Washington Post check, calling these fact-checkers “janissaries of the Obama legacy.” (Buckley hat tip for the ten-dollar word.) Harsanyi noted the Post “mentions Obama 13 times in a piece about Trump’s speech.” What resulted was “a litany of partisan arguments masquerading as factual correctives.”
The best part was Harsanyi’s amazement at their evaluation of Trump’s statement that thanks to his “bold regulatory-reduction campaign, the United States has become the number-one producer of oil and natural gas in the world, by far.” It’s true that America became number one in Obama’s second term. But does Obama deserve credit?
Obama ran for president promising to inhibit energy production, coal and oil. A Republican Congress and the Supreme Court foiled his plans. Harsanyi observes: “It’s quite the trick to not only censure Trump for bragging about oil and gas production but then, in the same fact check, confer all the credit on Obama, who did everything in his power — including banning drilling on most public lands — to inhibit exploration and production.”

In the ‘trump’s facts are bullshit’ category –trump claims “We’re producing jobs like you have never seen before in this country,” –BS
During the first three years of trump’s term the US added 6.6 million jobs. During the last three years of Obama’s administration 8.1 million jobs were added. trump’s average monthly employment gain was 182,000. During Obama’s last three years 224,000 jobs were added each month. All of trump’s job gains have been piggybacked on Obama’s policies, yet he claims all the credit. You of courser, forget that Obama inherited Bush’s crashed economy and trump inherited Obama’s recovery. Big Difference. Trumpy the GOPfather. Can you say goombah goombah goombah?

And you think the Chinese researcher who warned peers on a conference call about the corona virus and was shortly thereafter arrested and thrown in lockup out of site and out of mind for embarrassing (bringing dishonor to) the State has anything to do with Trump praising China on Phase One or Trump did not handle it well or handled the ‘crisis’ soon enough as the signs do not appear until awhile after one is infected……while China tried to put the fire out behind closed doors. The Chi-coms aren’t known as The Bamboo Curtain for nuthin’.
See, when you deal with a one party state, the bureaucrats control what the scientists say and then bureaucrats become the scientists.
What did you want Trump to do? Nuke China? Demand they let us solve their internal health and safety issues? Yes, Trump did not pull out a gun and shoot Putin in the face when they were on the World Stage in Helsinki. Sorry. And Trump hasn’t slapped the shit out of that Pineapple Face in the Phillipines this week.
‘Do you think that Presidents run the entire world?’ Are you a child?’

What truth? That Obama runs the economy? That Trump runs the economy? I’m willing for Trump to take credit just like I’m willing for Obama (or Bush or Clinton) to take credit. Really, the best they can do is not get in the way.
You probably need another religion, the world is a complicated place.
The best a President can do is to stand back and beat down the worst of capitalistic instincts, perhaps some combination of antitrust and contract law. People who think you can top-down manage an economy are the same folks who killed untold millions of Russians, Chinese, and German citizens.
Begone to your horrid little den.

Scenes 1:03 — it is not about this economy or that economy. The truth I am referring to It is about what a sleazy liar Donald trump is. Trump said, “We’re producing jobs like you have never seen before in this country,”
That statement is false and total bullshit because job creation was better under Obama’s last few years. How do you not understand this?
