[The $2T infrastructure bill is going to be a problem that the Dems hope will choke Team Trump. What about letting the several states plan and do the infrastructure work in their states under a coordinated plan from the feds. The states can come up with novel public/private funding schemes which may involve the feds only to the extent of guaranteeing loans and bond issues of those they approve. Thoughts? gjr]

Jeff pushes identity politics, and categorizes the people he tries to tear down by the college they attended… with his alma mater at the top of the heap. Those of us looking at him from the outside tend to think his degree in Rhetoric is more defining of him than the fact it was at Cal… not that Rhetoric isn’t a good major, but it is about argument and not the knowledge behind what to argue about.
Seeing him chasing after Barry Pruett for YEARS (golly, Jeff, how long are you going to keep tossing the precinct count at him?) and that his law school is closing down, gracefully. Hillary Clinton’s JD was from Yale (a good rep?) but still she didn’t pass the D.C. bar exam… while Barry, with a JD from Val-somethingorother passed the California bar exam, the most difficult by the pass rate. I’ve talked to Barry once or twice, a nice enough guy. I’ve no idea what Pelline is on about… which probably leaves narcissistic rage as Jeff’s motive force.

I’m at a loss here, Jeffie… who do you think has a physics degree from a Catholic college?
While I did attend and got a Masters in EE/CS at the largest Catholic university on the west coast(no heavy theology involved in EE or CS, and the campus was one mile from my office at HAC), my degree in physics is from a colllege with absolutely no ties to any religious institution, and my classmates weren’t exactly heavy churchgoers, either. That worked for me.
However, I’d not hold any bigoted opinions about someone who is catholic who studies a science like physics or chemistry. Nor should you.

Kesti.. Hotmail? Really?
It’s funny… in a rage, Jeff once was berating me for attending LMU (#18 on this list- https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-overall ) when I claimed to live just 2 miles from CSULA (#45 on that list)… and he proved it was a lie that my abode was only 2 miles from CSULA because he determined Alhambra was 5 miles from CalState LA).
The city center was about a five mile drive to the campus, but as the college abutted the city of Alhambra, there were people living in Alhambra who literally lived next door to the school. Me, it was a two mile drive. And I passed right by it twice a day, across LA proper, to work just north of LAX.
Tied with LMU at #18 for engineering (colleges that do not award doctorates) is San Jose State, Swarthmore, Gonzaga and (drum roll, please) Valpariso Universsity.

The Sun Is Stranger Than Astrophysicists Imagined
Hey, physics majors check this out. Natalie Wolchover writing in Quantum Magazine has the details:
A decadeβs worth of telescope observations of the sun have revealed a startling mystery: Gamma rays, the highest frequency waves of light, radiate from our nearest star seven times more abundantly than expected. Stranger still, despite this extreme excess of gamma rays overall, a narrow bandwidth of frequencies is curiously absent.
The surplus light, the gap in the spectrum, and other surprises about the solar gamma-ray signal potentially point to unknown features of the sunβs magnetic field, or more exotic physics.
βItβs amazing that we were so spectacularly wrong about something we should understand really well: the sun,β said Brian Fields, a particle astrophysicist at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
The unexpected signal has emerged in data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, a NASA observatory that scans the sky from its outpost in low-Earth orbit. As more Fermi data have accrued, revealing the spectrum of gamma rays coming from the sun in ever-greater detail, the puzzles have only proliferated.
βWe just kept finding surprising things,β said Annika Peter of Ohio State University, a co-author of a recent white paper summarizing several years of findings about the solar gamma-ray signal. βItβs definitely the most surprising thing Iβve ever worked on.β
Not only is the gamma-ray signal far stronger than a decades-old theory predicts; it also extends to much higher frequencies than predicted, and it inexplicably varies across the face of the sun and throughout the 11-year solar cycle. Then thereβs the gap, which researchers call a βdipβ β a lack of gamma rays with frequencies around 10 trillion trillion hertz. βThe dip just defies all logic,β said Tim Linden, a particle astrophysicist at Ohio State who helped analyze the signal.
Fields, who wasnβt involved in the work, said, βTheyβve done a great job with the data, and the story it tells is really kind of amazing.β

“China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man,” Biden reportedly said. “They’re not bad folks, folks. But guess what? They’re not competition for us.”
The comments were first reported by the Washington Examinerβs Joe Gabriel Simonson and the Des Moines Registerβs Stephen Gruber-Miller.
The Peopleβs Republic of China (China) has experienced rapid economic growth to become the worldβs second largest economy while modernizing its industrial base and moving up the global value chain. However, much of this growth has been achieved in significant part through aggressive acts, policies, and practices that fall outside of global norms and rules (collectively, “economic aggression”). Given the size of Chinaβs economy and the extent of its market-distorting policies, Chinaβs economic aggression now threatens not only the U.S. economy but also the global economy as a whole.
The paper concludes “Chinaβs acts, policies, and practices of economic aggression now targeting the technologies and IP of the world threaten not only the U.S. economy but also the global innovation system as a whole.”
Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported Chinese spies are stepping up efforts to recruit U.S. intelligence officers to access government secrets.
“Senior U.S. law enforcement and intelligence officials have escalated their warnings characterizing Chinese espionage as the single most significant long-term strategic threat, encompassing both spycraft intended to steal government secrets and the sustained heist of intellectual property and research from the corporate and academic worlds,” the report notes.

Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance or so I have heard.
The commander of U.S. forces in Latin America told Congress Wednesday that the military is developing plans to be immediately ready for any contingency if Venezuelan opposition leader Juan GuaidΓ³ ousts dictator NicolΓ‘s Maduro from power.
Adm. Craig Faller, head of U.S. Southern Command, told the House Armed Services Committee he believes it is only a matter of time before GuaidΓ³, president of the country’s National Assembly, takes control. GuaidΓ³ encouraged Venezuelans to take to the streets starting Tuesday, saying that the final phase of “Operation Freedom” had begun.
“[T]here is going to be a day when the legitimate government takes over, and it’s going to come when we least expect it,” said Faller. “And it could be right now, so we are calling it ‘day now’ planning.”

I donβt think Barr will not stop using the word βspyingβ. That man started in the CIA, so he is hip to the counterintelligence world. Later he was in the Office of Legal Counsel at Justice, so he was part of the group that wrote the rules for Justice Department conduct and guidelines and knows that the Special Counsel is subservient to the AG. The AG is the boss of the Special Counsel and not the other way around. Mueller is a 2nd tier employee and subservient to Barr, no matter what the Dems think. Barr, unlike Mueller, donβt care what the NYT or does not whine about image. Heck, if nothing else, the Mueller Report shows Robert Mueller is a partisan hack who does not go by the book and should be walking around with a Hillary 2016 button on his lapel. Frothy TDS is not a basis to run the country –
What is perhaps most notable about this episode is that Robert Mueller β or, perhaps, as Barr hinted in his Wednesday testimony, people around him β were concerned about the media coverage and political discussion around his report. Particularly troubling was that it wasnβt damning enough of the president. This is not a prosecutorial concern, but a political one unworthy of people who were invested with incredible investigative power in the name of objectivity.
Of course, no one holding forth about Barr on CNN and MSNBC, which are as committed to their hysteria and groupthink today as when the Russia story began, ever wonders about that.
