A rose by any other name would smell … .  Wm Shakespeare

George Rebane

Well, the last bits of doubt about our Democratic Party have been swept away by the new House resolution describing a fundamental transformation of America (Barack Obama, call your office).  The Green New Deal, sponsored by AOC and Senator Ed Markey (whom we have met on these pages), is socialism writ large.  So large in fact that the reporter interviewing AOC on NPR this morning had a hard time keeping from audibly gulping as he asked the feather head details and sources of funding for the individual mandates of the GND.  She, of course, had no answers other than taxing the bejeezus out anybody and everybody in the land who could still create wealth after the proposed strictures derive their power from the barrel of a gun.

So what do these two socialists propose in their fundamental transformation?  You can read the resolution here, and some more expanded analysis here, here, and here; but let’s just lay out a few of them in short form for the sake of discussion.

  • US carbon neutral in 10 years. “…this would mean a complete remake of American electric power, transportation and manufacturing.”
  • Guaranteed government job for all. “… provide all members of our society, across all regions and all communities, the opportunity, training and education to be a full and equal participant in the transition, including through a job guarantee program to assure a living wage job to every person who wants one.”
  • Government control of all medium and large corporations. “Employees would elect 40% of directors, who would be obliged to consider “benefits” beyond returns to the owners.”
  • Vastly higher taxes. Top rates for death taxes, income tax, and payroll taxes would increase markedly.  Also proposed is the institution of a “wealth tax” on assets.
  • Government take over of industries like healthcare, insurance, manufacture of certain products like pharmaceuticals, etc.

Now all this is based on the fundamental socialist tenet that tax rates do not affect economic behavior.  This belief by the Left is totally immune to historical data, including what France just had to rescind, and what has made NK, Cuba, Venezuela, … what they are today, and what caused the downfall of the USSR, and the massive shifts in the economies of China, Vietnam, … .

So there you have it.  Just keep your eye on the slated 40+ Democrats who sign up to sponsor this resolution – their true colors will wave proudly.  And also see how many more Democrats will be looking at their shoes while mumbling something about not belonging to the new socialist party of America.  Our Founders are spinning in their graves.

[8feb19 update]  It appears that Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may turn out to be the liberal loon for all seasons.  Both sides of the aisle seem to be happy dancing at the advent of this good looking 5-star ignoramus.  The Dems claim that her GND plan is just a negotiating “anchor” point stuck into the land of the ludicrous, a strategic starting point to get people dickering with each other about where we should really wind up.  Their hope is that any surviving putrid pot of progressive public policies will still be close enough to the GND anchor, and by comparison will look good to their light thinking constituents who will then support it as a ‘compromise’ with the Right.

Meanwhile, the Republicans are convinced that AOC (along with mini-minded Markey) have handed them the penultimate political prize for 2020.  WSJ’s national correspondent Kim Strassel details the blessings in her ‘The Socialist That Could’, and offers a succinct summary of “AOC, the secret Republican weapon for 2020.”

It’s a GOP dream, especially because the media presented her plan with a straight face—as a legitimate proposal from a legitimate leader in the Democratic Party. Republicans are thrilled to treat it that way in the march to 2020, as their set-piece example of what Democrats would do to the economy and average Americans if given control. The Green New Deal encapsulates everything Americans fear from government, all in one bonkers resolution.

And can you imagine the profusion of optics AOC has already provided and will provide during the next 18 months for Republican ads.  This woman has turned out to be a horn of political plenty for the Right that is scaring hell out of the Democrat leadership – “They should be scared. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a freight train gaining speed by the day—and helping Republicans with every passing minute.”

Given all this political largesse, my concern now is for AOC’s safety.  The RNC should offer to share with the DNC some of the costs for added security for the congresswoman.  No conservative in the land wants anything to still her voice, or deter her from advocating the clear path she has set out for America.

But AOC is the New Face of your formerly Democrat Party. Wasn’t much of a small ‘d’ democratic private institution party anyway.
You guys have always wanted to do exactly what she proposed, except you were to chicken shit to come out and say it. What, were you afraid you would like squirrels passing pine cones or monkeys trying to hump a football in front of thewhole watching world? Thanks for giving us the New and Fresh Face of the Illiberal Democrat Party. Now, no hiding behind her las nalgas and pretending she was not spawn from your loins……….sucks to be you.

“I cannot offer an in-depth analysis of this proposal. The proposal itself is so vague in parts, delusional in other parts, and unbelievably childish through every part, that serious engagement with its ideas is impossible. It reads like something a four-year-old in Soviet Russia may have dreamt up. All I can do, all I need to do, is tell you exactly what it says. You will soon realize why a thorough rebuttal is not necessary.”

For the reflective reader I point out that out leftwing commenters will talk about anything except the substantive points of the Green New Deal. The word their head shed is out – CHANGE THE SUBJECT! No Democrat knows how to handle this hot potato, and the only hope is that their lapdog lamestream media will be able to dredge up something else to get the nation’s mind off what the new socialists cum communists are proposing. The latest is this cascade of collectivist crap is that America should just abrogate its sovereignty and let all Hispanics have free reign in the country because they have Indian blood in them, and Indians were here first, therefore all of them can caravan up here singing ‘This land is my land, this land is your land, …’.

I am already on record as saying the bill looks lame and is probably DOA as written. The Senate won’t pass it and Trump will veto it.

So the lefties that show up here think the GND should be ignored because it has no chance of becoming law.
I can gaurantee it won’t become law as proposed just yet, but it shows the Dem’s hand as to what they plan for us in the future. Beyond the politics and the total trashing of our Constitution and Bill Of Rights, there is also the sheer stupidity and ignorance of what is called for.
Just because a political leader hasn’t got the power to force everyone to slice their own throats open doesn’t make me feel any better about that person advocating such action. This just isn’t communism, it’s bat-shit crazy to boot. I doubt any historic socialist or communist leader would ever propose such nonsense. And the pols signing on and endorsing it (or refusing to admit it’s wack) posses real political power in this country. And they’re gaining steam. They’ve got millions of Americans cheering this insanity. That’s my concern.

Perhaps they should be singing “This land is my land, your land is my land…”
During the release of Senator Warren’s (D-Cherokee) DNA test, an interesting tidbit revealed that the term “Native American” is more likely referring not to our Native (US) Americans, but native peoples south of the border who migrated to and populated first the regions known today as Latin America. Then the Conquistadors came along and raped the native women with abandon. Like one huge orgy. Ironically, Puerto Ricans are not considered Native American by OAC hereself, but a Latina because her foremothers done got raped by the Spanards.
Th Apaches migrated north and first appeared in what is the now our nation’s Southwest a mere 475 years ago. The indigious peoples of Nicaragua, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico Peru, etc. are not what I would call Native Americans, but instead refer to them as indigenous peoples of the Americas. Think Aztecs, Mayans, Incas. If they have legal claims and grievances, take it up with the Spain.
Interesting to note the largest country in South America is Brazil, a former Portuguese colony. Heck, so is Mozambique, a Portagueese speaking former colony. But, that is not the real point now, is it?
So, the members of the caravans from Central America and points south whom have had no precious history of being conquered or raped by the folks from counties of Northern Europe now lay claim to being Native American? What? Indigenous peoples who have never inhabited what is now known as the USA lay claim to NYC or Minnesota? Go pound sand, sez Cherokee Nation.
    Anyway, back on topic..

Re: Update. Boy, did she ever blow Beto and his skateboarding grand entrances right off the front pages. Where is our Kenndyese Camelot boy now? I can’t hear ya. I fear overexposure did him in…that dental visit of his kinda got his followers a wee bit turned off. Dentist visits rank right up there with trips to the DMV, according to the polls.
AOC draws all the cameras around and is sucking all the air out of the room right now. Let’s hope she does not suffer Beto’s fare of overexposure. Somehow, I doubt that will happen. She lights up a room and appears to be the gift that keeps on giving.
For the Leftinista pundits that say AOC is a lot like Trump and the GND was just a page straight out of Trump’s Art of the Deal, they may be correct. Without fanfare, the reference to ‘cow farts’ was removed from the GND this morning. :).
Word of caution: Nov. 2020 is still a political lifetime away. Long gone with be the shutdown and memories of the SOTUS will fade in the mist in voters minds by then. I do, however, think that both SOTUS and AOC are pivotal points in defining where we go from here.
Daily Quotes go here today, not Sandbox. There is a first time for everything.
For laughs: “By the end of the Green New Deal resolution (and accompanying fact sheet) I was laughing so hard I nearly cried. If a bunch of GOPers plotted to forge a fake Democratic bill showing how bonkers the party is, they could not have done a better job.” —Kimberley Strassel
Before: “One reason that people who are politically conservative are skeptical of efforts to combat climate change is that it sounds to them like it requires massive government intervention. … It does, it does. … I have no problem saying that.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
After: “I think one way that the Right does try to mischaracterize, uh, what we’re doing as though it’s, like, some kind of massive government takeover. Obviously, it’s not that. —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Braying Jenny: “This is one of the most urgent moral issues and crises that we have in America right now. This is not a political issue. Children dying in detention centers should not be a partisan concern. It should be a universal concern for every American in the United States. We’re here to say that an agency like ICE, which repeatedly and systematically violates human rights, does not deserve a dime.” —Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, just days after an illegal alien murdered a citizen of her sanctuary-city district
If only she were consistent: “Preserving God’s creation … is, in my view, a moral responsibility.” —Nancy Pelosi on unborn life the planet facing climate change
And last… “The threat of climate change is so urgent that we can’t solve it unless we commit to giving everybody free healthcare, free college, affordable housing, healthy food, well-paying jobs, and provide economic security to those unwilling to work.” —Philip Klein

You can see where the Blue Mob’s need for a world government comes from, even though they think of it as a vast overstatement.
. Not enough jobs? Labor oversupply. Blue Mobsters are pro-mass immigration and in the Age of Trump have become free traders (outsourcing is a form of labor immigration). Solution? Everyone in the world needs a job for everyone in the US to have one.
. Excess greenhouse gas? Too much CO2/methane/etc. produced and the US is only a smallish fraction of the total. Solution? Everyone in the world has to reduce emissions.
.Guaranteed housing? Free school? Guaranteed healthcare? In an age of open borders, there’ll be simply more people pouring in. Solution? Everyone in the world needs to have guaranteed housing, school, healthcare.
.Indigenous people? Well, they’re all over the world. We’d better look after their interests everywhere.
.International monopolies are bad? There are a bunch of them in terms of single-sourced (or near single sourced) items. Better go after some company in Thailand or China.
In the more expansionist phase of the Soviet Union (pre WW-II era) much of their foreign policy was based around worldwide revolution at the cost of the people within their own state. I have to admit that there’s a little of that messianic fervor here.

Pelosi Stacks Climate Committee with Dems Backed by Energy Interests
Pelosi knows how to play the game of appearing to support climate change while doing something else. Money talks!! No AOC on the committee.
Despite the speaker’s confidence in the energy and expertise of her appointees, it is unclear if their history of taking campaign contributions from large energy conglomerates will prove problematic.
Castor, who has pledged to reject campaign contributions from fossil fuel interests, has taken more than $72,000 from individuals and political action committees associated with the energy and natural resources industry since joining Congress in 2007. The majority of the funds—approximately $59,000, according to the Center for Responsive Politics—came from PACs linked to the industry. As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, Castor previously owned stock in companies with troubling environmental records.
Similarly, Bonamici ($87,963), Brownley ($55,789), Casten ($46,259), Huffman ($118,310), Levin ($42,143), and McEachin ($62,364) all received significant backing from the industry throughout their congressional careers.
By far the largest recipient of industry contributions was Lujan, a member of Pelosi’s leadership team who previously served as the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Since entering the House in 2009, Lujan has taken more than $522,000 from individuals and PACs linked to energy interests. Of that total, more than $438,000 came from PACs belonging to companies like BP, which donated $7,500 to Lujan in 2018 alone.

WHY THE GREEN NEW DEAL IS A BAD DEAL FOR AMERICA Kindle Edition
The Green New Deal utilizes a propaganda technique called Appeal to Fear. It advances the notion that the U. S. must initiate a massive and urgent State-run program that would control the climate by reducing the use of carbon-based fuels. It would simultaneously improve the lot of the poor and middle class. In truth, this proposed program would be a complete waste of human and natural resources. The entire concept is based on the false premises that carbon dioxide (CO2) is a pollutant, CO2 emissions are bad, that the increasing rate of CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels is causing the global temperature to rise which will lead to adverse climate change, and that reducing fossil fuel use is an immediate necessity to protect the natural environment from most human actions. None of the premises are true but an entire political party has been co-opted by the ‘old’ glamour of young, naïve want-to-be Marxists who have seized on this invalid concept, The New Green Deal, to disguise a push for complete State control in all matters. The Party establishment has caved and now Democratic Socialism is a primary plank in the Party’s progressive political platform.
This book is intended to address the future role of carbon-based fuels in a rational manner and without a hidden political or ideological agenda. It is agreed that the supply of fossil fuels is finite and the natural environment is affected by its continued use. Most of the effects are beneficial for both humans and the environment. But some are not. However, there is enough time to plan for a transition to cleaner energy without massive government intervention in the form of the control of production and the private sector. That type of government intervention is by definition– Socialism. It has never been successful.
This is a serious matter. One that must be considered in a clear-eyed and non-ideological way. This is not a liberal arts matter, it must be considered pragmatically, with constructive thought and action. And the first practical thought is to recognize that we have plenty of time to gather the data and get it right, the American Way, not the Democratic Socialists Green New Deal way.

Robert Hockett, a Cornell law professor who is advising Ocasio-Cortez on her Green New Deal, claimed on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that her proposal did not include economic protections for those “unwilling to work” and claimed that the phrase came from a “doctored document.”
    Damage control so soon….
““Oh, I thought that came right from her, that was in the backgrounder from her office, is my understanding,” Carlson replied.
“No, no. She’s actually tweeted it out to laugh at it. If you look at her latest tweets, it seems that apparently, some Republicans have put it out there,” Hockett insisted. ”

“Buying and using American-grown food products and improving nutrition for children in our schools should be an issue that both sides of the aisle can support. I’m happy to join with my colleague, Mr. Garamendi, to help ensure our children enjoy fresh, local produce instead of potentially less desirable alternatives from overseas. This bill holds school districts accountable for constantly requesting waivers to purchase foreign food products and helps ensure our tax dollars are used to buy healthy, high-quality, American-grown and made products for school lunches. It’s preferable to utilize food items that are produced right here in Northern California or in the USA “

Hope burns eternal. Remember I am the younge brother of a former full blown feminist author and once dabbled briefly with the Yippies, aka, the Youth International Party, a more radical spin off of the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). More Antifa than democratic. Stupid is as stupid does. The New Left became the hippies and ended up selling tie-dye shirts on QVC late at night or cut their hair and peddled insurance. Some of tthe SDS never left campus as evidenced by the current atttempt by the Far Left to hijack take over the Democrat Party. Kinda like the Chicago ‘68 without the tear gas in the streets. Maybe they will run Biden.
Anyway, we were all young once and thought that society should be like living on a commune in Garberville. The problem with not living by the old rules requires too many new rules. Way too many. Stifling. Reality in practice, idealism only in words. Can’t we just do away with money? Oh, can you pick me up a box of Tampoons?
Authority benefits the governed….as in we the people. Think stop signs. Power benefits only those who rule over and wield power.
From my post you responded to:
“But none of Mencken’s fun prevented him from making this serious point: “The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.” And “rule,” not govern, is the operative verb here.
Chesterton shared Mencken’s concerns about both urges. Yet unlike Mencken, Chesterton conceded that, as a young man, he had been attracted to socialism because of its popularity. To not be a socialist meant that one was a “sneering snob forever complaining about the behavior of the working class.” Or worse yet, it meant that one was a “horrible Darwinian forever thundering that the weak must go to the wall.”
So, yes, there was a time when Chesterton was a socialist, so long as he could believe that “socialism meant protecting the weak.” What Chesterton came to realize as a full-fledged adult was that socialists were mainly interested in power, “haughty, concentrated, over-reaching power.” They sought to rule, not govern.”

Hmmm. Maybe your are correct, Dr. Rebane. I was in my early 20’s when I took a walk on the wild side. 29 years old is a wee bit old to be believing the cow jumped over the moon, IMHO. Maybe she is hopeless. Maybe she will be peddling miracle supplements on informericals some day.
    Hey, diddle, diddle,
    The cat and the fiddle,
    The cow jumped over the moon;
    The little dog laughed
    To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Show me a private museum anywhere in the world that can stand toe to to with the Smithsonian. How about a system of parks? Plenty of private “parks” but nothing in the world that compares with our National Park Service or wildlife preserves. How about the library of congress? ETC

Sorry George. Is there some hidden code in : “name one service that government provides cheaper, better, or even competently, that is also provided by the private sector.”
    My answer still stands-

If your question isn’t one off, my answer is germane. However, as much as you enjoy sleight of hand and innuendo, please share with us the REAL real question behind your question.

State of Fear has been completely hashed by knowledgable critics. It is sold as a work of fiction yet people like you have made it a real capstone in your lives. Kind of like all the drugged out Hippies declared “I am a Walrus” as an invocation to god when the Beatles themselves said they were only looking for word rhymes.
From his own website: Michael Crichton’s latest blockbuster, State of Fear, is also on the theme of global warming and is, …likely to mislead the unwary…. Although this is a work of fiction, Crichton’s use of footnotes and appendices is clearly intended to give an impression of scientific authority.[23]
As I’ve said many times, opening your mouth, Todd gives us insight into the depths of your stupidity. You are truly on the lower end of the IQ. Pretending otherwise is embarrassing to all of us, especially those who want to help you the most. Take a cat nap. As my kept man you need to maintain a minimum level of coherence.

State of Fear? You mean like having only 12 years until civilization as we know passes into The Point of No Return! Like falling off the edge of the Earth or being fried like a Frito? We are all going to be burned alive! I feel your perennial state of fear, the normal progressive state of mind. Quick, run to your safe places, people. The end is nigh. Holy crap, The End is here!

So the “green deal”‘s joke of just being what it is,,, is now OUR FAULT?
    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/congress/the-mysterious-case-of-aocs-scrubbed-green-new-deal-details
“On Feb. 5, the congressional office of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted a new blog entry under “energy issues” detailing her “Green New Deal” proposal and answering “frequently asked questions.”
The page, announcing an 8:30 a.m. launch on Feb. 7, is now gone, and a top adviser suggested Friday it was actually authored and distributed by the GOP.”
That’s like saying Repubs authored Obummercare.
