In The Myth of the Rational Voter Bryan Caplan documented a significant body of research which showed that in the US voters in the aggregate are what may be termed formally insane.  The general understanding of this phenomenon applies to populations all over the world, and its general characteristics were even known to the ancients.  Of course, our well-read Founders knew this, and that is why, in order to avoid the mistakes of the past, they wisely did not leave us a democracy.

The democratic republic they did construct and detailed in our Constitution is supposed to keep the hoi polloi’s mitts off the machinery of our federal and state governments.  They inserted a hopefully wiser and more circumspect layer of elected representatives between the mass of citizens and the levers of power.  The idea was that such electeds would be better read and would take a broader view of things that insured the country’s prudent progress.  Unspoken, save in their oaths of office, was the notion that all of these worthies would be pro-American – i.e. legislate so as to assure the republic’s prosperous and permanent future.

Our Founders had no idea of the world order in which America would find itself 250 years after declaring our independence.  Today two major ideologies, founded by Marx and Muhammad, are working to bring all the peoples of the world under one monolithic governing leviathan.  Each, in the interval, willing to work off the gains of the other in the firm belief that they will be the victor when the dust settles.  In the meantime, there will be a need for lots of dust, or ‘cracked eggs’, or whatever to bring the outdated global gaggle of sovereign nation-states to an end.

Marx’s collectivists today march to that brave new world mostly under the socialist banner, although swapping for the colors of communism (already/still solidly ensconced in the community of nations) is always possible were stronger medicine necessary to mind the masses.  Muhammad’s disciples, no matter their current schisms, see the global caliphate under sharia law as the culmination of Allah’s plan for his earthly creation.  Both can accept convenient amalgamations of the two on the road to their glorious destinations.

But both see Job One as getting rid of those pesky independent nations, many harboring their own distinct cultures and preferring to live with their own kind.  Such bad values hinder both Marx and Muhammad.  A working formula for diverse peoples accepting an overarching government has already been demonstrated by forcefully integrating different people by cheek and jowl, people who naturally do not trust each other for countless reasons, and therefore are willing to accept a strong government over all of them, if for nothing else than to keep a stressful and depressing peace.  It has been done, and it works, and then we ‘educate’ their children to believe and behave properly.

So how do you get such mixing of cultures to occur if there are still nations with boundaries?  The answer, as we have seen, is simple – make it so that the boundaries are porous, and induce the poor, depraved, and deprived to migrate to those lands where native cultures have created prosperity and wealth.  Tell them it is their right to leave their besotted homelands (aka shithole countries) and go to where the streets are paved with gold.  Tell them also that their native cultures are of equal worth to the ones in their target destinations, and that they have the right to continue practicing what didn’t work back home.  In their new home assimilation is not recommended, and will instead be achieved by future generations under central planning.

In the US and EU the porous borders solution is now in full swing, with those who dare to protest the impending destruction of their home countries being labeled and pilloried as racists, nazis, fascists, and (white) nationalists.  And now in America we hear from the renewed Speaker of the House, Mrs Pelosi, that not only do border walls not work, but that they are “immoral”.  No one has yet to ask that corrupt socialist scion why it is immoral to construct infrastructure that will protect and defend against assault and attack.

And our electorate, as Caplan and others have pointed out, give de facto endorsement to Team Pelosi by concurrently claiming conflicting attitudes as demonstrated by numerous polls.  Americans in the aggregate approve of ‘border security’ without really knowing what they are talking about.  And then they also claim to oppose ‘illegal entry’ into our country, while simultaneously opposing ‘the wall’ and all such effective barriers to illegal entrants.  And in the large they have no intellectual capital with which to question what they are told in the lamestream media about walls, border porosity, and ‘migrant rights’.

So there you have the latest anti-American chapter starting to play itself out with the advent of the 115th Congress and its Democratic House.  The daily message to the masses is that they should keep their eye on that dastardly Donald Trump (a money-grubbing capitalist in the pay of Putin) who will now really be investigated until the cows come home, and to not worry their little heads about what’s happening at our southern border.  And by the way we also don’t need no stinkin’ military spending to update our forces and dated nuclear arsenal in the face of China’s and Russia’s intentions in the Far East and Europe and Middle East.  But new taxes will be levied to fund increased entitlements and benefits for ‘immigrants’ – how else will Marx’s minions (millennials and ‘minorities’) maintain their majorities?

[6jan19 update]  The real immorality of the wall has been revealed by the alt-Left Democrats in the newly elected House.  RR reader and commenter ‘fish’ points out the highlights of ‘HR1 – For the People Act of 2019’ in his 1051pm below.  The question that I have been struggling with for some years now is ‘Have Democrats really evolved into an evil anti-American political coalition, or are they simply more confused and ignorant than ever about the policies they promote?’  With the introduction of HR1, a proposed law that would clearly overturn the sanctity of American citizenship, my conclusion in light of this information is that yes, to the extent that the rank and file Democrats support this bill, they are indeed the country’s party of evil – its Fifth Column bent on destroying the last vestiges of an exceptional America.

If they ever pull this off and put HR1 into the US Code, our illegal alien and mass migration problems will be over.  America will have become a destitute country (possibly even a shithole country) for which no one will want to risk life and limb, or even the price of transport, to come and demand its citizenship.  With the passage of HR1, American citizenship will become moot and strictly optional for everyone who can make it across what used to be known as our country’s borders.

“they wisely did not leave us a democracy”. –Wise only from the view of those in power. The truth was more like the founders were the monied elite who saw themselves, finally, as the equals to European royalty but without the pedigree, and wanted to insure that the lessors they convinced into fighting and dying (but not voting) wouldn’t pull the same stunt on them that they pulled on the King. Democracy tends to level the playing field of power and wealth. Something both the pseudo-aristocrats of the past and those of the present wish to subdue. The sense of entitlement of the wealthy class, in their thinking, somehow makes them special and, therefore, entitled to rule over the riffraff because they know what’s best. Unfortunate for someone whom fate has cast to be born into a different neighborhood, as they will have to work for it instead of having it handed to them on a golden platter like the trumps of the world.

RobertC 138pm – I’m sure you’re about to point out a country where a pure democracy has not committed suicide. And the philosophers and historians from whom our Founders learned of such things were nowhere near the “monied elite” of whom you speak. But you socialists have always pointed pejoratively to the well-to-do as being founders of this or that nation. Yes, most of them were because back then only the well off got to go to school, learn to reason and discourse in public, and communicate to the populace.
Whenever the poor and the ignorant have attempted to set up a government, their efforts would quickly crash and burn (and turn into a tyranny) because they lacked fundamental knowledge of what would or not work in organizing a society. This process has gone on even unto the present, even when you don’t have to be rich to get an education. But it’s got to be an education that works, not what is being taught across the land today.
More than half of your millennial comrades believe that capitalism is and has been the bane of society, and needs to be overturned as the template for structuring economies. Yes, your 138pm is for me and mine a scary declaration that could well have been written by Marx or Lenin.

Never in the history of the world had a form of govt and social system produced a county in which so many people could be born poor with no social standing and work their way up to the top. But of course the lefties urinate on it because not everyone ends up equal.

What the socialists among us are not taught is that America’s wealth structure is very dynamic, and only a small fraction of the wealthy actually inherited their silver spoons. The rest of the very well off earned their wealth the hard way, they worked for it.
My family arrived here below dirt poor. And in 18 months we bought our own little house (a converted two car garage) in one of Indianapolis’ poorer neighborhoods, but the damn thing was ours. Four months later my father (assistant electrician at the downtown YMCA) bought our first car – a new 1951 Ford Deluxe 2-door, the cheapest they made, but again, it was ours. Everything was financed, but ONLY in America could an immigrant fresh off the boat get financing. All mom (expert seamstress now sewing sausage casings at a local meatpacker) and dad had to do was show that they had steady jobs and were people of good character.

Try the same business model in Nevada City. Dare ya’.
” The Garden Diner and Café, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a vegan worker-run “collective” formerly known as the Bartertown Diner, shut down this week after a five-year run as reality overcame devotion to communist principles.
The restaurant promised a “living wage” to all employees and a strong union; that promise should have been enough to predict its demise, and indeed, it was.
Customers complained about waiting over 40 minutes for a sandwich; the restaurant’s hours were variable because the hours were set by group decision, and the restaurant often publicly espoused its devotion to communist heroes and principles, even featuring a mural of Marxist leaders and murderers Che Guevara and Mao Zedong making and serving vegetarian food.
The restaurant’s creator, Ryan Cappelletti, told MLive in 2011, “Because of our economy, people are working 12- to-15-hour shifts, servers take home $200 to $300 a night in tips, the cooks are making $10 an hour and the owner takes whatever he takes. We’re going to have equal pay and equal say across the board. Everyone working together.” “

Steven Frisch: “Yep diversity is inherently a threat to freedom.”
I’d say that diversity replaces trust with mistrust and social glue with government. There certainly are a bunch of sociology (not much of a science, but all we have) studies that show that.
Dunno why ‘diversity’ became a battle standard for the left, it rarely came up until the last decade or so. Heck, even the Soviets pushed for nationalism within their state boundaries.
I can’t say that monocultures imply success or freedom, it isn’t like a small town in Switzerland will underperform one in Somalia, but it’s hard (impossible?) to find cases of places lacking underlying homogeneity that don’t require a pretty strong thumb on the scale from government. That homogeneity can be religion, race (whatever that is), language, 1000 small acts in daily life, but it sure seems necessary.
It would be funny to interview everyone at the Sierra Business League and see just how different they all are.

You and yours are so narrowly read that you continue to believe that this eternal truth is held only in remote coagulated pockets like Nevada County. I think its funny that you think I think that your “eternal truth” is only held in Nevada County. I’m well aware of the fact that your version eternal truth is held by a wide range of people living across a broad swath of geography both urban and rural in America.
What they all have in common is that they do not know or understand our nation and its “credo.”
The reality is the United States has always been a melting pot, a polyglot, of multiple races, ethnicities, religious orientations and points of view.
The strength of the United States has not been the ability of people to live with people who share their values, mores, and tradition, which has almost always been code for race, whether defined in the modern sense, or in the sense used in the 19th century when southern Europeans, eastern Europeans, Jews, and other caucasians were defined as a different ‘race.” It’s strength has been its ability to bring in people from across the globe, of whatever race, even Aryans from the Baltic states, and blend them into a American identity. That was accomplished not by separation but by the very act of people of different backgrounds living together.

Steven @ 10:24 AM In the past the key was assimilation, but that has slowed or stopped in many communities. Victor Davis Hansen covers the problem in California in his book Mexifornia and in subsequent articles. The Muslum refuges are resisting assimilation, insisting that communities adopt their customs, carving out neighborhoods so they can sustain those customs, rather than assimilate. These actions demonstrate a desire to live among their own kind, rather than join the American Melting Pot.

StevenF 1024am – Indeed, the ability to ‘blend’ diverse cultures has been the secret of American exceptionalism. Thanks to you and yours, that ability is no longer ours. Now you have made identity politics the social order of the land, blending and assimilation is now receding into our past as the newly arrived huddle in insular communities promoted by our Left. Where assimilation used to take less than a generation, now takes an unknown number of generations with the growth of sustainable enclaves where a large shares of their populations speak no English at all. These then are at the mercy of their mediating political bosses who ‘translate’ what the rest of the county is doing and how they are being discriminated against. But that also may be news to you.
And if you and yours really knew that the ideas discussed in these pages have wide purview, you would address those ideas, instead of vilifying those of us who evoke and debate them here. But that, as these comment streams testify, is not the case.

,,,The notion of national culturalism has issues because the US is a melting pot of cultures. Immigrants from different geographical, national, and religious differences tend to flock together for protection as well as language, religious, etc. differences. This creates the divides like Serb/Croat/Muslim; Sunni,/Shiite; Jew/non-Jew, etc. and the neighborhood silos (hoods). Don’t forget the first peoples who were mostly exterminated so the Bible toters could superimpose their idea of a national culture over the native populations.
It takes a blend of the national cultural and multicultural to make a melting pot work.

As illustrated again and again by immigrants like those of my generation, we could not be distinguished from the ‘average Americans’ in either our speech, mannerisms, values, addresses, observances, … . And none of us thought our identities would be more burnished if we touted our foreign origins in the public forums. Thanks to those who wish to divide us, that is no longer the case in this land. Now the arriving immigrants and illegal aliens are taught that America is a fractured and socially unjust land composed of ossified ethnic factions, who are being trodden on by a white racist America descended from (primarily northern) Europeans.

It is true that ALL immigrants assimilate at a slightly slower rate today than in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Steve and others on the left – My legal immigrant ancestors arrived in this country waving the American flag. Not the country they came from. They learned English and would never have dreamt of ‘demanding’ anything from their new adopted country. They became Americans, not some hyphenated BS weasel-worded sort of citizen.
This country is no longer on a singular path laid down by our forefathers. The left decries here and elsewhere how bad these men were and how we need to ‘update’ our national govt to pure democracy (mob rule) and get rid of some of our treasured rights. No matter what actual religious practice they personally conducted, everyone in the US used to believe our civil rights were bestowed us by our maker. Now the new modern man feels God is un-needed and the govt will hand out our new rights based on whomever happens to be in power at any given time.
The left wants to usher in the sort of dystopia AOC is braying for. It cannot move that fast now and will patiently wait another generation if needed to have a smaller and un-armed opposition to deal with when the latest version of government-knows-best is instituted.
We can be a nation of all different skin colors, nationalities and social customs but we can no longer function if we are not basically on the same page with fundamental ideas of governance and freedoms.
That sort of ‘diversity’ leads to civil war. If you don’t believe me, believe history.

Besides, what is wrong with maintaining a cultural connection to your roots… that used to be nice. At least it was in the Italian, Bohemian and Slovak neighborhoods where I grew up. Eating cannoli aint a sign that your not an American.

“I am sorry George, but you guys are completely incorrect about cultural assimilation not occurring with the current generation of immigrants.”
If that is true, why does the govt now print in 57 languages?
It didn’t used to and everything was fine.
Assimilation doesn’t mean learn how to order at McDonalds.

The point that we want every American to be informed so we print in multiple languages (BTW there were more readers of German language newspapers in Chicago in 1885 than English) is not proof that assimilation is not occurring.
It is simply not true that immigrants are not assimilating–every one from CATO to Brookings to USCB Community Survey has crunched the data…immigrants assimilate into US society just like our Italian, German, Irish, Chinese and Estonian ancestors did.
Your opinions are based on either incorrectly interpreted data or intentional mis-information…and the point that is likely intentional mis-information that is what makes it a friggin’ racist propaganda trope.

Well.. when MY Grandma And Gramps came here from Sweden, (and through Ellis Island) They never spoke Swede again. Never kept a Swedish flag for “old times sake”. They came here to America to BE Americans.
    That’s called “assimilation”.
Bringing the problems with you that you came here to escape, isn’t.
Waiving the flag of the nation you left isn’t assimilation.
Just like today we have idiots demanding America become more “Euro like”. Screw you, the horse you rode in on, and the dog that followed! America became what it is to get the HELL away from being anything like “over there”.
It’s America that’s actually made the world a “better place”.(for the most part)

    Read it and cringe Proggys.
    https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/americans-want-border-security-and-the-numbers-show-it
“President Trump is far from alone in his determination to secure our borders — according to a recent Gallup poll, Americans view immigration as the second-biggest problem facing the country today.
That’s bad news for the Democrat Party, which is hellbent on opposing the president’s efforts to fix our broken immigration system, especially the border wall he needs in order to get illegal immigration under control.
The Democrats have a very simple, two-part strategy on immigration: first and foremost, they want to keep President Trump from fulfilling his promises to the American people; second, they want to make it even easier for foreigners to enter this country illegally.”
Note to Paul… POLLS bub,,POLLS!!!! Live by the poll, die by the poll!

    Walt-
I take it that you are such a backwards hillbilly that you’ve never been to a Chinese New Year’s celebration in any of our nation’s largest cities. Some serious nationalism and flag waving going on in extremely conservative neighborhoods. But of course you won’t believe it.

Hi “jon”!! (same lame ass TROLL with a new name)
So smartass, tell us how they have “assimilated”? They stick to themselves, stay within their own, don’t like “outsiders”.
And really don’t care to speak “our” language.

Some serious nationalism and flag waving going on in extremely conservative neighborhoods.”
And the problem is just what?
Don’t like it? Then go to some other nation. Try Cuba. There is always Venezuela.

I just looked online at Cnn.com. Not one story about the Newman officers funeral, but a huge story on fox news.com. Yeah, Frisch, your folks came here legally, just like Offier Singh did. Unfortunately, the person who killed him did not, but you lump all immigrants together as all good. What part of illegal do you not understand?

Walt- You are an ignorant fool. The Chinese don’t assimilate??? So much of our tech, finance and pharma have Chinese Americans at or near the top that it is almost a stereotype. The entire Bay Area is filled with Chinese (not just China Town as you probably believe). During New Years celebration Chinese from all walks of life come together in a celebration of their heritage. That your parents chose to bury their heritage does not translate into the rest of the immigrants in this country.

So basically Chinese assimilate by living together in the Bay Area and celebrating Chinese holidays.
    Gotcha.
Obviously it’s a matter of degree. If you bring in a few people from elsewhere and/or scatter them around the country, you have some hope of building a common culture. If you slam in millions of them in a few places, you end up ceding territory to somebody else. There’s nothing new here or even particularly immoral, but at least be honest about it.

M opines “,,,The notion of national culturalism has issues because the US is a melting pot of cultures. ”
    ,,,not true.
We are basically hitting stride in our second big influx of foreigners (third if you count the initial invasion). The first one at the turn of the century caused enough trouble that it resulted in legislation which basically turned off immigration until Mr. Kennedy got involved. The other big difference of course was that all the prior immigration was from Europe. It’s hard to argue that an influx from Germany (or even Estonia!) is more easily merged into the flow than millions from Guatemala, Nigeria, or India.

Yes Scenes, that good ol’ Mzzzz “jon”. (How was the slammer? Now that was a bright move)
Bring up Chinese New Year(which is celebrated in China Town) then add “they live all over town”.
    That’s a classic Mzzzz.”jon” ploy.
It’s about time you slithered back.
I wear “redneck” and/or “Hillbilly” as a badge of honor.(something you don’t have)
