[A little while back I asked for feedback on the notion of moderating RR comments in the effort to cut out a lot of the naked ad hominem interpersonal crappola comments that contribute nothing to the discussion of ideas, issues, or events.  The plan would be to quit moderating again as soon as the ad hominems were promoted to at least high school, if not churchillian, levels.  The response from all you worthies was a massive yawn.  Silence is also feedback, so I take that as apparently no one cares.  Thank you. gjr]

PaulE 703pm – Paul, tell me it isn’t so; you really know better, don’t you???? According to the Public Policy Institute of California, the state right now has about $60B unfunded liabilities for CalPERS and about $70B for CalSTRS, for a total debt of over $130B, and not a Republican in sight to blame it on.

Yes, the younger gen are dumbshits, and gullible.
“A recent Gallup poll showed that 57 percent of Democrats view socialism positively, while 47 percent of Democrats view capitalism positively. Across the aisle, only 16 percent of Republicans view socialism in a positive light, a number still frighteningly high among those who identify as conservative.
The Gallup poll adds that the youth are more likely to favor socialism than those who are older. “Evidence for this is found in the strong support younger voters gave Bernie Sanders during his 2016 presidential campaign,” says Gallup, “and in the candidacy of Ocasio-Cortez.” ”

    “scenes
Showing incredible financial acumen, Paul Emery sez: “The state has no debt.”
Yep, I will let that dangle in the wind. Ever heard of bond obligations? 30 year bonds sold to finance things like the billions CA has spent of stem cell research? Many years to go to pay off that debt, as one tiny tIny example. Best reply is a non-reply, ROFLMAO.
Yes, Trump increased the debt 2 trillion already and O doubled the debt as his sole lasting legacy of his Presidency.
“While ignoring $1.8 trillion might be politically convenient, the fact is that the day Obama left office, the debt was almost $20 trillion, nearly double what it was when he got there. According to the Office of Management and Budget, the deficit went from just over 52 percent of gross domestic product at the end of fiscal year 2009 to 77 percent of GDP at the end of fiscal year 2016. With all that spending, Obama still oversaw the weakest recovery in American history.
The only other way a person can argue Obama “lowered deficits” is by comparing his first year of historically high deficits — fueled by outlays that he either signed into law, voted for, or supported — to his other years (although deficits were again rising by the end of his term). That is deceptive, to say the least.
Many presidents are guilty of growing the debt, but no president in history had ever taken on more than Obama did. And when we stop tipping the scale, and solely compare debt to the percentage of total economic output under all these presidents, we are left with a far different picture than Leonhardt’s selective framing.

How are we going to pay for it?
According to nonpartisan and left-leaning studies friendly to your cause, including the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities or the Tax Policy Center, the overall price tag is more than $40 trillion in the next decade,” Tapper said during the September interview. “You recently said in an interview that increasing taxes on the very wealthy, plus an increased corporate tax rate, would make $2 trillion over the next 10 years.”
“So, where is the other $38 trillion going to come from?” Tapper asked.
Ocasio-Cortez danced around the question for as long as she could before Tapper had to change the subject because it was obvious she couldn’t answer the question.
“So, I’m assuming I’m not going to get an answer for the other $38 trillion,” Tapper said. “But we will have you back, and maybe we can go over that.”
——-Well, let’s try that again. One more time…………
“What makes it unrealistic?” Ocasio-Cortez asked.
“How to pay for it,” Cooper responded.

    Its about time –
On Thursday, Padilla confirmed for the first time that his office is actively investigating whether illegal immigrants and other noncitizens voted last year because the DMV erroneously registered them to vote.
Judicial Watch attorney Robert Popper said the issue of non-citizen voting is a separate matter from the inactive voter registrations, which he said have been lagging in states across the country for decades since the Justice Department, during Bill Clinton’s presidency, signed a consent decree that inactive voter registrations couldn’t be removed despite the NVRA requirements.
The Supreme Court decided a case last summer that determined that the removal of inactive registrations is mandatory under the NVRA.

California has a Constitutional Amendment that it must balance it’s budget Walt. Thought you knew that. Here’s a refresher on Proposition 58 passed March 2004.
“Proposition 58 was a California ballot proposition on the March 2, 2004 ballot. It passed with 4,535,084 (71.2%) votes in favor and 1,841,138 (28.8%) against. It was officially called the California Balanced Budget Act. It requires the state legislature to pass a balanced budget every year, which means that budgeted recurrent expenditure, including repayment of past debt, does not exceed estimated revenue. The act does not require that capital works programs be funded out of current revenues. The California Constitution has always allowed bond issues (state debt) for specified capital works, above a certain value. Bond measures must be approved by a statewide ballot.
The Act created a reserve fund called the Budget Stabilization Account in case of future financial trouble. It also prevented the creation of any future bonds to pay off deficits like that in Proposition 57 (the California Economic Recovery Bond Act).

,,,somebody tell Trump there are online learning opportunities,,,but not on Twitter
‘’’But there was a more immediate explanation for the collapse of the Soviet Union provided by Yegor Gaidar, who had been acting prime minister of Russia from June of 1992 to December of 1992 and a key figure in the transformation of the Russian economy. In his last work, Collapse of an Empire: Lessons for Modern Russia, published in 2007 Gaidar provides a powerful explanation for the collapse of the Soviet Union. Soviet agriculture had stagnated in the 1980’s but the demand for grain in the cities was increasing. It was necessary to buy grain in the international market. While the price of petroleum was high it was feasible to finance the purchase of grain from internal sources. When the price of petroleum fell in the late 1980’s the Soviet Union needed to borrow the funds from Western banks to purchase the needed grain. This severely restricted the international activities of the Soviet Union. It could not send in Soviet troops to put down the rebellions against communism in Eastern Europe because such an action would have resulted in a refusal of Western sources to lend the money needed. Likewise the attempted coup d’état was doomed to failure because the coup leaders would not have been able to borrow the funds needed to stave off starvation in the major cities.
Although Gaidar’s book does not delve into the reason for the decline in petroleum prices in the late 1980’s there is evidence that this occurred because of a conspiracy between the American Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.) the leaders of Saudi Arabia to punish the Soviet Union for its invasion of Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia increased its production of petroleum drastically and consequently the price of petroleum fell.’’’
