Laffer lives, tax rates do affect people’s behavior.  French president Macron and his government have discovered that over the last couple of weeks, and are now retreating from the attempt to wean their country from fossil fuels by boosting the price of such fuels for French consumers and workers.  The monetary losses already suffered in the country’s economy, and therefore tax revenues (France already has one of the world’s highest aggregate tax rates) have yet to be totaled, but the sum could easily be in the billions of dollars.  The bottom line is that no one any longer believes that their government’s tax increases will have any positive impact on global warming.  None of this is a lesson to or understood by America’s Left.

Schumer was for border security before he became a champion of open borders.  It’s hard to believe that Senator Chuck had such sentiments about illegal aliens, and told us all that “illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple.”  Today only a shrinking share of courageous Republicans can say the words which so forcefully came from the mouth of one of Democrats’ leading forked tongues in 2009.  You can see the senator’s Georgetown Law School two-minute summary of the topic here.  How come every voter in the US has not seen this little video?

Our local lefties are happy dancing in the streets celebrating Nevada County’s role in California’s recent Blue Wave, and ascribing all kinds of community bennies to the advent of coastal progressives moving into these foothills.  What’s astounding about that celebration is the celebrants’ claim that our county is therefore taking part in all the good things cultural and economic in which California is supposed to already lead the country.  None of these people are aware of the real stats on California’s decline culturally, commercially, and into criminality.  The exodus of middle-class workers, retirees, and businesses continues unabated, and unreported by the lamestream.  Kinda reminds one of the progress reports that always adorned the pages of Pravda in the old days of the USSR, and to a great extent still do under Putin.

George Boardman again lambasts LaMalfa (here).  Our favorite Union columnist and stalwart apologist for the Left on these pages singles out our congressman for his rice farm subsidies that the recent (dreadfully misnamed) ‘farm bill’ promises to continue.  The cleverly crafted conclusion that Mr Boardman bestows on his readers is that Doug LaMalfa somehow stands out as the leading leech of farm subsidies which are distributed far and wide across the land.  Moreover, our columnist again implies that it would be a simple matter for LaMalfa to decline his subsidies were he only made of stiffer stuff.  (I leave it to the reader to decide how much of this is fake news viz opinionated commentary, as also found on these pages.  For the record, RR has been and remains opposed to farm subsidies and corporatism.)  But nowhere does Boardman profit his audience by telling them that 85% of the farm bill is the carefully camouflaged food stamp welfare bill – that would mangle the carefully crafted message.  In fact, there are over 40M Americans on food stamps, more than the 37M population of Canada.

‘History Ended in 1945’, so argues James Dobbins, former assistant SecState who now holds the Distinguished Chair in Diplomacy at the RAND Corporation.  He maintains that “undoing the postwar order could produce global depressions and frequent wars.”  This has been a general theme of Rebane Doctrine, and has been debated here for years.  I found the following excerpt as a particularly strong endorsement for continuing capitalism, the Westphalian world order, and America as a global hegemon.

Yet in a larger sense, the “end of history” came in 1945. Since then there have been no wars between major powers and few between smaller states. The business cycle has been moderated if not eliminated. The subsequent seven decades saw almost continuous economic growth, lifting nearly half the world’s population into the middle class.

These accomplishments are based on two basic, widely accepted norms of international behavior: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s territory, and thou shall open thy markets to all equally. The norms were buttressed by numerous postwar institutions—the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, now the World Trade Organization. Equally important, the norms were backed by U.S. military and economic power and the attractiveness of the American political and economic model.

Trump’s NDA payoffs.  Quite often Non-Disclosure Agreements are part of quid pro quo contracts.  Why is Trump singled out for such a contract that involved alleged events before he became a candidate, and the effect of which on the election is debatable and yet to be demonstrated?  Didn’t Hillary also pay staff (possibly with government or campaign funds) to scrub servers of contents which definitely would have had an impact on her electability including potential criminality?  No one has made a peep about that.

[13dec18 update]  Apple to build $1B, 15K job facility in TX “ choosing Austin as its marquee job-creation locale” – among other locations across the country.  Progressives (especially the looney local lefties) need to strap on yet another set of blinders in order to continue denying the Great California Exodus that is moving producers and the productive out of state. Re : Boadman’s column.
First, I wish to say hi to Mr. Boardman when he reads this. “Hi ya, George B!”
My complaint is why is it folks always put things in 10 year or weird timeframes nowadays? Will save 3.5 billion over ten years and the like. Boardman uses 22 years. Makes it harder to divide by ten in my head to get the figure of how much it costs us taxpayers this calendar year in real time, tossing out inflation and such.
“Rice farmers were second only to cotton growers when it came to collecting subsidies in California, harvesting $2.7 billion in subsidies during the 22-year period. Rice farmers in LaMalfa’s 1st congressional district collected over $636 million during the period, while constituents of Rep. Tom McClintock received over $39 million.
“The LaMalfa Family Partnership ranked 23rd among California rice farmers during that period, collecting $5,294,095, according to EWG. LaMalfa, who owns 33 percent of the partnership, has collected more subsidy money than any other current member of Congress, according to EWG”
Ok, 22 year period. Rice farmers in La Malfa’s District collected 636 million over twenty-two years and McClintock over 39 million. The LaMalfa farm collected 5,249, 095 of which Tom owns a third.
    LaMalfa’s district: 636 million divided by 22 years is ~ 29 million/year, average.
La Malfa himself: 5.295 million divided by 22 years divided by 33.33% = $80,219/year.
Tom McClintock’s district: 39 mil divided by 22 = 2.77 mil a year for whole district.
Friggin rice eaters. Almost as bad as the cotton pickin’ cotton pickers.

Re: Laffer lives, tax rates do affect people’s behavior
Excactly, Dr. Rebane. It was the first thing that crossed by mind (about taxes and behavior) when reading about the Yellow Vests. I would never ever put myself in your league or caliber of knowledge or critical thinking, save to say great minds think alike.
I remember when folks (who could afford to) fled NYC for Connecticut. Now, because of high taxes, folks are fleeing Connecticut for tax friendlier Florida and other places and taking themselves, businesses, and headquarters with them. Connecticut is even offering younger people 20 grand to move there under certain conditions…like staying there five years and paying them higher taxes. I played with the numbers and it’s a wash, if not dismissing returns.
No, taxes don’t affect human behavior. Right…..
Albeit the frog leg and snail eating French are accustomed to paying exorbitant gas taxes, I got the feeling the unwashed folks on the street are saying “Taxed Enough Already.”

trump is singled out because the contract was in violation of campaign finance laws and were enacted solely to keep the details of trump’s adulterous affairs out of the public eye. The effect of the election is debatable only because the voting pubic (a majority of whom did not vote for trump) were not aware that he was an adulterer at the time of the election, and as such, any effect cannot be demonstrated.

    California Population Out Flow
As for outflow, 661,026 exited California, a scant 1.7 percent slice of the population. Texas — the second most-populous state — was the top destination for who departed the Golden State: 63,174 left for the Lone State state. Next came west-of-the-Rockies states: Arizona (59,233); followed by Washington (52,484); Oregon (50,109) and Nevada (47,513).
    Relocation’s ‘net’
All these ins and outs add up to what’s called a “net” migration score. California’s total net outmigration — more exits than arrivals — was 137,895 last year or 0.4 percent of the population.

660K is an enormous number given CA’s current employment of about 18.6M workers. Since one third of US welfare recipients live in CA, and more gimmes are arriving daily, that emigration number looks even worse. No one on the dole or on the lam from immigration authorities wants to leave CA.
Here are some extremely revealing numbers about CA’s workforce and changes in it.

Multiple news outlets (legitimate ones not Faux) are discussing the possible ramifications of trump directing the payments as per Cohen’s sworn testimony. Multiple legal experts have chimed in on the subject and their observations do not bode well for the trumpster. In fact some are saying that if trump were not President he would have been indicted by now. True, the issues will not be settled until the whole truth comes out and just as the red House did everything it could to stall and obfuscate the investigation, the blue House will do everything it can to bring out the truth.

Everyone knows how the Dems’ political interpretation of their truth will be once in power. You’re really beating a dead horse here until Mueller gets an indictment.
Still don’t know what the “red House” did to “stall and obfuscate the investigation” – they had no power to do any of it to Mueller’s efforts.

Leaving California? Leaving cities, the gridlock, the crime, the trash police who check your garage cans for a aluminum can tossed in, leaving the water police, and mostly leaving the Progressive mindset behind. Progressive is really a misnomer . More like the police state. Libs love the police state because they think it will never be used against them.
Christmas will different this year for me. Went to my Aunt’s funeral this past October. AST time I will see the whole family and relatives in one place. The last of my grandparents (both sides) siblings passed on. My brother announced he made an offer (accepted) on a place out of state. Way out of state Afterall those years with his big home on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Santa Cruz, he has had enough of CA. And he is not even political.
My little sister (who is never ever political nor gives a hoot about politics) at the funeral announced that they are putting their home on the market and leaving CA. Her husband does what only 2-3 people in all of LA know what to go. It’s not the money. They have 7 acres on their private pond the middle of miles of rows of new condos and development and congestion in the urban sprawl. It’s the rules and regulations in CA. Of their five kids, (4 are Berekely grads, the other one overcame a rare disabilitiy a become a nurse), all have left CA.
My aunt’s three sons (my cousins) were there at her funeral, of course. All certified Mensa members. One cousin and his wife moved in with my aunt to care for his mother for the last 5 years, postphoning his retirement plans. Highly educated bigwig at the largest school district in America, LAUSD. Now that my aunt died, he is out of here, like within days. Bought a house with land outside of Prescott, Az. Of the other cousins (including all their kids and grandchildren), only two have remained in CA…my cousin and his wife in the Bay Area. Highly educated, one teaches opera voice and the other is in graphic design. He’s the guy who put Roger Craig in underwear back in the day. Those two will remain, all the children and grandchildren on that side have left CA.
Of all the family members that have left CA in the last few years alone, only one (the black sheep) moved to Texas. And he likes it. Only place where he could find work with his geology degree from Berekely. Black Sheep because he works for Big Oil. 🙂
So, Christmas will be different this year. Just me and and an older sister remain, both whom fled the cities long ago….and left that San Francisco Values mentality far behind.
So tell me again how only blue collar uneducated yahoos are moving to Texas or to other states as they are fleeing CA. I am all ears. The uneducated yahoos like me stay. Go figure. Have you seen the new Silicone Valley they are building in Texas? Techies only need apply.
Tell me again how only uneducated right wing extremist Dregs of Society are leaving CA, you arrogant bastards.

Robert Cross — Trump’s Ex-Lawyer Didn’t Violate Campaign Finance Laws, and Neither Did the President
It seems pretty clear that the Federal Election Campaign Act wasn’t meant to cover what Cohen has pleaded guilty to, which is why the Edwards prosecution failed. It is also highly doubtful that if this case had been presented to the Federal Election Commission, where I used to serve as a commissioner, it would find a violation of the law.
No one can excuse the tax evasion and financial fraud charges to which Cohen has pleaded guilty. And as former Federal Election Commission Chairman Brad Smith recently said, we can probably all agree that these “payments to women were unseemly.”
But “that doesn’t mean they were illegal,” says Smith, regardless of the fact that the Southern District of New York convinced Cohen to plead guilty.

    re: History ended in 1945.
My take is that it just started over. Nuclear states locked down their borders, but there are other things going on.
I’m attracted to the idea (as posted in a youtube vidya some time ago) of a shift in creation myths. Cultures have their founding stories, a lot of them overstated or just made-up, and failing firm outside control need them to form a kind of glue.
Old creation stories: rule Britannia, US expansion West, Christianity (mostly Protestant), George Washington’s cherry tree, Thanksgiving.
New creation stories: original sin of slavery, Crusades, holocaust, colonialism. Peaceful and pastoral indigenous Americans living as one with the land. Hitler.
Year 1945 isn’t the end of history, it’s just Year Zero.
No wonder the Blue Mob wants to tear down the old order. There’s an underlying moral authority that’s stronger than logic, stronger than tradition. In a real sense, Hitler (as Satan) has become their founder. It’s a kind of anti-philosophy.

This Cohen testimony reminds me of the Kavanaugh hearings. Grab Dr. Ford, place her in front of the cameras, make an allegation that is impossible to disprove, then whisk her out of there at a high rate of speed. The goal was to get the allegation (charge) out in public., not the evidence.
Same with Cohen, albeit is a two part charge. Get him in court, have him stand and say what the prosecutors told him to say, state he did this and that cause Trump told hm to, and get him out of court as soon as he leveled the charge. Hard for Trump to prove a negative. Just get the accusation out in public, Cohen’s job is done.
I suspect the Meuller report will be the same. Nothing on Trump, but a whole lot of accusations. What, after two years and 30 million bucks, he is going to come back with some dubious campaign violation that probably won’t hold up in court and is in iolation of the DOJ’s rules and practices? I think not. Nope, toss out another allegation…which is the point of matter.

A candidate getting a haircut cannot be a campaign expense. If the canidate gets a haircut once a month, he would continue to do so whether he was running for office or running a business. Only the unhinged Left would argue that getting a haircut to maintain a professional appearance is done solely to try to influence an election.

The campaign violations of Trump v. Hillary continue to amaze me the way they are received by the Left. Using his own money, Trump paid off some bimbos, with whom he is alleged to have affairs, to remain silent and not embarrass his campaign by the disclosure of acts that had no bearing on national security or his ability to govern. Hillary, as SecState then candidate, used campaign and foundation funds to pay off private staff to confidentially maintain her illegal private servers so as to circumvent laws requiring her to conduct government business on government IT networks. In doing so she demonstrably and with impunity sacrificed national security, which behavior bore directly on her ability to govern.
The former is now considered an impeachable offense for TBD violation of election laws, the latter is dismissed on the grounds that she really didn’t mean to hide all those thousands of damning emails (now scrubbed) and expose our nation’s confidential information to foreign hackers.

My comment to Fish went over his head

Oh dugsKKKi I glance at your posts only for their comedic or ironic value (not much of either today). Gregory is right though it wasn’t that President Leghorn was diddling some half bright chunky monkey in the Oval Office it’s that he was stupid enough to let himself get trapped into lying under oath. At that point it did effect his ability to govern!
Now go put on a fresh one and return to watching Nickelodeon like your minder told you!

,,,oh dear Fish,,,you are still underwater per George’s definition of what is ok to do in the Oval Orfice,,, “””the disclosure of acts that had no bearing on national security or his ability to govern”’
it was ”’the act”’,,,not what rabid pubbers tried to make of the act!!!

    https://dailycaller.com/2018/12/12/democrats-tax-rule-change/
House Democrats caved to their progressive wing Tuesday and decided to scrap a rule that would have required a three-fifths supermajority vote to pass any new tax hikes.
Democratic New York Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated the move.
“When I first won, folks said we were too naive, inexperienced, and uninformed to be effective,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “Yet in our first weeks, we elevated Green New Deal to national urgency, secured 30 cosponsors on a Select Committee, and helped stop a bad tax rule. I’d say we’re off to a good start.”
Well Dougy,, LIBS think what happened in France just “can’t happen here”.
It goes to show the LIB electorate are as gullible as sheep to slaughter.
