[WASHINGTON—President Trump is elevating the issue of immigration, which drove his 2016 campaign, with the aim of animating Republican voters in a midterm election that threatens to derail his agenda if Democrats retake the House. Mr. Trump’s latest comments came Thursday as he warned about an “onslaught” of migrants reaching the southern U.S. border with Mexico and threatened to deploy the military if the caravan isn’t stopped.]

It would be fun to see how all you worthies stack up in your House prognostications. One way is for each of you to contribute the four MAB distribution parameters for, say, the Democratic Party. Put down the min, max, and most likely number of seats they will have after the mid-terms. Also throw in how confident you are (0-100%) that the real number will be in the vicinity of your most likely estimate. I’ll also contribute mine, do all the calcs, and publish the results right after the election. Then we’ll see out of which end of our alimentary canals each of us has been talking. Of course, if you already know which end and don’t want to embarrass yourself further, ignoring this challenge would be the best policy.
(For the techies, the link is to the post where I introduced readers to the continuous MAB probability distribution. In the House race case the random variable is discrete, so we’ll use the discrete version of MAB to do the calcs. Obviously, the reader whose MAB yields the highest probability for the correct number of seats wins. But everyone else can then also see how well their estimates stack up.)

Quiet guys, let them think Blue Tidal Wave is a’coming. Shhhhhh. Finger on lips.
Five thirty eight has the R’s having a 13% chance of keeping the House. CNN had the genteric D vs R spread at 13 points. Politico ran an piece saying there are 208 House seats that a solid D or leaning D. Oh my, boogie man cometh, whatever shall I do. Alas, woe am I. Psst, Politico, it takes 218 seats to capture the House, ROFLMAO.
Walt is right. Whatever the Dems are selling, the people ain’t buying. There may be a Blue Wave, but watch out for that Red Tide.

Just remember that historically the House goes against the incumbent party during midterms. That combined with polls showing Democratic leanings that are solid and consistent points towards a Demo House. Senate will likely remain Repub. Here are some interesting details
Average losses for a president’s party since World War II: 26 House seats and three to four Senate seats.
Average House losses when a president’s approval rating is above 50 percent: 14 seats.
Average House losses when a president’s approval rating is below 50 percent since 1970: 33 seats.

Which reminds me….does anyone know what the Dems are selling this election cycle? Think their platform is rescind tax cuts, increase regulations, impeach Kavanaugh, abolish ICE, promote open borders and lawlessness, open the prison doors to let criminals loose on our streets, and what ever is in the that snake oil tonic. Did I leave anything out? Oh yeah. Mob rule and giving Hillary one more try at the brass ring.

So Paul, just wondering… I assume you’re enthusiastic about Audrey Denney’s run against LaMalfa…
She claims to be for the 2nd Amendment but is on the record that she’d work to ban the sale of semi-automatic guns and thinks California’s “gun safety” laws, perhaps the most stringent anti-gun laws in the country, can be passed nationally.
So, the question is… do you believe Denney is pro-2nd Amendment?
If so, do you also believe in Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny? Maybe the Great Pumpkin?

LIBS say the wildest things! Is this jackass for real?
Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti President Donald Trump is “hostile” to Latinos and “working people in America.”
Garcetti said, “We have a hostile president to Latinos in general, to working people in America, been anti-middle class, anti-rules.”
He added, “They think a wall will keep people out when they don’t go to the root of the problem. This is similar to a lot of their policies, let’s get out of a nuclear treaty, let’s do something with North Korea, let’s weaken our alliances, let’s do things that take away our health care. But they don’t have any plans ever to get to root causes or replace what they’re against. That’s worrying. It’s not just an administration whose values are cruel, but it’s also an administration that is absolutely ineffective.”

Democratic hopes for a wave election that would carry them to a significant House majority have been tempered in recent weeks amid a shifting political landscape and a torrent of hard-hitting attack ads from Republicans.
The tightening, with just over two weeks left, reflects how President Donald Trump’s rising approval rating and the polarizing fight over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh appear to be boosting the party’s candidates in a number of conservative and rural districts that have been considered up for grabs.

@ Gregory: Education in decline…
Anecdotal story. Just heard from a niece. Cal graduate in math. Went to Cornel for master’s degree. Worked on US segment of super collider. Been working for Cornell for about 5 years now doing research.
She is sick of going research and training researchers. Fed up. She says that everyone who is sent to her to be trained “do not know anything. Not a thing”. These folks all have master’s in math or physics. They have no knowledge, no work ethic, are worthless as teats on a FUE.
She was in Germany for 6 weeks. Goes to Germany a lot to do research. The equipment she needed from Cornell was not sent. She e-mailed the professors at Cornell every single day for 6 weeks straight requesting the equipment she was supposed be going the research with and never got one reply from the professors. Not one.
She is fed up with the grants that are money pits, full of waste, fraud, and abuse. She is fed up with the “researchers” that “know absolutely nothing” that she has to work with. She is changing course and is now going to get her doctorate in physics and leave the bureaucratic wasteland of grant funded research. Just confirming what you probably already suspected.

Look closer at the CNN forecasts, however, and there are cautionary notes.
“The margin of error is wide enough that [Democrats] could end up with 203 seats, short of a majority, or 261 seats, well more than needed for a majority,” writes the network’s analyst Harry Enten about the race for the House. Enten’s Senate forecast has a similar caveat.

My kid when a freshman at Cal 11 years ago was asked by a math prof (multivariable calculus IIRC) why the class was doing so poorly, and caught himself, saying he was doing great so why would he know?
His class was the first to arrive with their entire K-12 years infected by whole/fuzzy/constructivist math programs, which were rolled out statewide when my son was in the 1st grade. Starting in the 2nd grade he was enrolled in the local St.Sensible.
Constructivist (aka NCTM) Math is also another name for Common Core Math, and for everyone who still thinks Common Core doesn’t tell teachers how to teach it have never read the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice which is filled with links to the NCTM source material. Dog whistles for teachers attuned to discovery methods where the Socratic Method is the rule of the day, only without a Socrates guiding them. You’re on your own, kids.
Same crap, different decade.

although I’d rather have a pony.
Of course, there’s absolutely no reason you couldn’t do this in California simply as an experiment. Crank up the state income tax rates to a level where those same people in CA get their 6 G’s.
While you’re at it, increase the state income tax rates to pay for Medicare-for-all. Just the health plan would likely triple the rates, but it’s for the children.
It’s a single party state, so why bug the rest of the country about this stuff instead of just doing it here?

I don’t think that a Soros is required. It seems to me that there are plenty of grassroots politicians in the area who are able to gin up an invasion of this kind, there’s really nothing to stop it aside from physical barriers or force.
It isn’t like you can bribe the people to stay put. The money will just be used to buy Swiss chalets, Mercedes, and white NGO Toyota Landcruisers and you certainly aren’t going to remake a place by writing some checks in any case.

The Shasta Dam was designed to be 200 feet taller! We did not need the water at the time, so the taller extensions were left for the next generations to build. Now, we hear the sky is falling on just the proposal of making the Shasta Dam 20 feet taller…and the lawsuits are flying. A mere 20 feet would double the water available for human use in the Sacramento River watershed. But nooooo. 900 million acre feet would be nice with all the illegals coming in drinking up our water and flushing the brown stuff down the toilet.
Take our local neighbors, the small town of Foresthill. They have their reservoir with an 18 foot wall. They did not need the extra water when build, so they did not build a spillway. It would have cost 2 million bucks for the spillway to be built. Expensive, but doable. Now, it’s still about two million clamshells to have the spillway manufactured and put in place. But, nooo.
-Add one million for Eniromental Review.
-Add two million for environmental ligation.
-Add 6 million the Forest Service is asking to move a trail and a campground with a few campsites.
-Still two million to build the spillway on the 18 foot high dam.
Total cost for little Foresthill is 11 million. Not so doable.
Whether one talks about raising the Shasta Dam (as designed when constructed) or the little Foresthill Dam, it’s the same song and dance everywhere. The plan goes under review for years. Then it is sent up the ladder to another government agency where it is studied for years. Then it is sent off to another agency where it is studied and reviewed for years. By the time it is approved, everything has changed (environmental law, other laws, etc) and you are back where you started…at the step one, spending years on initial studies.
Trump is trying to streamline the process. Whether it is building homes or retrofitting dams, the entire processes need to be be streamlined in CA and everywhere. That is what Trump is trying to do. You can only go so far with Executive Orders.
When water flows, food grows. Try growing dope without water.

Moi, dams continued. The reason Foresthill needs a spillway is because the CA regulations have reservoirs draw down to low levels of storage to send the aqua out to the Ocean. Bye-bye needed water. A spillway would let Foresthill (for example) increase storage for human use in growing communities as well as meeting mandates to release water to be sent out to sea.

Growing dope they might understand and take notice. Actual food, well not so much. It just magically shows up at the supermarket.

Just as suspected –
New court filings document the extent to which the Obama administration used government power to target disfavored industries, and subsequently sought to avoid responsibility for its targeting program.
Choke Point was an initiative under which the Obama administration tried to shut down disfavored industries by removing their access to payment processing and other banking services, thereby cutting off their financial “oxygen.” They did so by applying pressure to third-party banks through the FDIC and other federal financial regulators. Targeted businesses were almost all entirely legal, and included ammunition sales, online gambling, and payday loans.
Choke Point was terminated in August of 2017 by Attorney General Jeff Sessions just a few months after he took office. Sessions then labeled it a “misguided initiative” motivated by “political preferences,” rather than by a respect for the rule of law.

1) The post What did the Kavanaugh Confirmation Really Confirm is gone, so I will post here.
With the luxury of hindsight, I realize the Kavanaugh Confirmation hearings were not about the House Dems or about even about Trump. It’s was about Chucky the Clown Schummer’s Boys against Mitch’s Boys. It was the Senate Dems punching wildly in the air the attacking the Establishment Republicans (the Bush people). It was about the Bush Republicans standing up on principle against the unhinged Democrat Socialist Party, show casing Dem Senate leadership and Dem Senators in particular.
The Confirmation hearings confirmed how sleazy and insane the Dem Senators are. Not one member of the Democrat Senate showed any vestiges of leadership or statesmanship. Once again, they looked like monkeys trying to hump a football. It gave the nation a look into how unsafe at any speed they are. Instead of hearing about Max Mad or Brain Freeze Peloski, we saw the Dem Senators in true form. No place to hide, nothing to offer.
2). Midterms. I am adverse to cite conventional wisdom in this time of The Reckoning, previous labeled by moi as the Convergence. With that disclaimer tossed out for all to see, Latino voters went 30% for Trump. More importantly, Latinos historically have low voter turnout as a group, something not accounted for in polling.
Better still, the 18-24 year old crowd have a historically low voter turnout of 13%, give or take. That low turnout of that particular age group is not accounted for in polling or measurements of how motivated and fired up the libs are.
Time will tell. :).

A question to you pilots. Just who does one contact to report suspicious aircraft behavior? Was looking around on that flightradar24 and saw a flight track that’s way too bizarre.
A direct flight from China to just West of Stockton, just to do a 180 and return to Woodland , drop in alt. do another 180, just to head South again. Someone get dropped by parachute?(just a wildass guess)

Walt. You tell me and we will both know. :). Back in the Cocaine Wars, the pilots would make a flight plan from down there to Altanta. Then they would turn around and fly to Miami. The Feds were looking at flights arriving in Miami coming in over the Ocean, not arriving from the north….like Altanta. Plane from Mainland China to outside Stockton then turn around and buzz Woodland? Whatever it is, it must be worth the expense and risk.
Got my ballot. Finally, finally went up to the County after things settled down after the primaries a few weeks ago and got it all straightened out. Why was my vote in 2016 not countered with reason listed as N/A? Why did I not receive a ballot for the primaries?
My 2016 ballot was counted. The State’s is so slow to update their data base and the County says my vote was counted, Slow? Like, it’s almost two years after 2016 and they still haven’t changed ged my balllot from not counted to counted?? Grandma is slow, but she is 94.
The reason I did not receive the last primary ballot is because so voter regeristration card the County sent was returned. Yes, they had the right name and address and the right me. The nice young man pushed a button and turned me from invalid to valid. Told ya the Russians were messing with my mail. 😉
So, the Feds (USPS) screwed up, the State screwed up, and that screwed the County up. State says one thing, County says another, and of course we got the full force of the US Government involved. And to think folk actually vote fo bigger government?
The libs never connect the dots. They vote for years for bigger and bigger local, State, and Federal government, decade after decade. Then when they can’t handle the Santuary Poop City By the Bay, they flee up here with their failed notions. They love it here, except for the voters. Gotta change that. So, they come here and want all Lib all the time without realizing what they voted for years in the City of Piles of Hyperdemic Needles is reason they are escaping for their lives from the shithole of which they created. They wrecked that place and cannot grasp the absolute truth that their solutions were the problem all along. Mercy.

Ok, shoutout to a young man named Christian in Diaz’s office. I gagged his ear off and told them that new voting system is slower than the pony express and what the hell is going on with my ballot not coming? I made sure the kid knew I voted for Trump so see his reaction. fChristian was great, professional and zeroed in on the problem in a heartbeat, yet in a laid back kind of way and was very happy to address all my bitches, with a slight smile. I told him that because of my negative comments in the Union about his office, I would give him a positive shout out, unsolicited. My idea. A righty gotta keep his word if humanly possible.

“The U.S. Geological Survey says several powerful quakes were reported Sunday evening. The of the depth the largest is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) and it struck about 149 miles (239 kilometers) west of Tofino, Canada.
Geophysicist Amy Vaughan says the three larger quakes ranged from magnitude 6.5 to 6.8 and that there were possibly some smaller ones as well as some aftershocks. Vaughan says the quakes were lightly felt onshore and that as of now no injuries were reported.

Education, diversity, and the dumbing down of America.
Most Americans might be shocked to discover that, a little over a century ago, 99% of U.S. students were literate. And they were literate until the Education Establishment abolished phonics and made children identify sight words.
This dumbing down was no accident. “If professors of education could justify claiming that non-reading is reading, then they could use Whole Word to make children into functional illiterates,” explains columnist Bruce Deitrick Price. “If they could claim that garbled, nearly useless arithmetic is as good as real arithmetic, they could make kids learn Common Core Math. If they could create bogus research to prove that Constructivism is a superior way to teach content, they could make sure everyone knew almost nothing.”
And if everyone knows almost nothing, the “fundamental transformation” of America is more easily attained.
If SCOTUS eliminates discrimination at the college level, the American Left would be forced to confront this contemptible dynamic — and the politics that drive it — where it matters most. “Back in the 1940s, before the vast expansion of the welfare state and the ideology of victimhood used to justify it, there was no such gap on test scores between black schools in Harlem and white, working class schools on New York’s lower east side,” Thomas Sowell explained in 2013.
