[Good-hearted Darrell Berkheimer, one of our Union’s several progressive columnists, is truly an exemplar of ideological low hanging fruit. His most recent 1sep18 column is standard leftwing pap and a collection of its staple feel-good talking points, with no consideration of how any of such socialist goals can be achieved, either with living breathing human beings or available monies. His solution for the latter is to defund the military, which to him and his is the ever-present and unnecessary burden that maintains an America which keeps globalism at bay. If it weren’t for his effect on the even less-well-read of our community, Mr Berkheimer’s ignorance of history and economics could be gently dismissed as the simple outpourings of a concerned and kindly old gentleman. gjr]

Paul at 5:44 – “Do you believe that protected life begins at conception…”
OK – first of all, we’ve been through this a couple of times and I’ve made my beliefs crystal clear.
That’s an interesting way of putting it, Paul – ‘protected life’.
It’s called human life and yes – medical science considers human life to begin at the formation of the double helix. If you would care to come up with some other definition or maybe explain WTF is ‘protected’ vs non-protected human life, we’re all ears.
The other posters did the work of ega-ma-cating you on the Bible.
I won’t bother to lay into you on your obvious ignorance.
Stick to guitar string plucking, Paul. You do it so well and I’ve enjoyed your music many times in the past when I was living in Nevada County. When you wander into areas outside your ken, you just embarass yourself.
Hell, you can’t even keep track of who you’re replying to.

More trouble from Rep Hunter. Quote from his lawyer:
“Duncan Hunter’s lawyer, Gregory Vega, objected to that part of the investigation in an August letter to the Justice Department, the paper reported.
Vega argued that prosecutors are pursuing criminal charges for conduct that falls into gray areas of civil election law.
“This is true even for personal indiscretions of the congressman that the prosecutors seem intent on charging,” Vega wrote. “The supposed reason given for including these details is that they reflect spending of campaign funds for extramarital infidelities and excessive drinking.”
Vega claimed that the prosecutors told him they had photos of Hunter’s alleged affairs. Even so, he said, the indiscretions didn’t rise to the level of a crime.
“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity,” Vega wrote.”

Punchy, I am trying….as well as others, that the word kill in the original Hebrew text meant murder. The Hebrew language had different words with different meaning for the singular English word kill. There is the unintentional taking of another’s life, the intentional taking of another’s life, the killing of animals for sacrifice, the killing in war, and so on. Translators in 1611 had only one word to use….that was the word “kill.” Remember that the King James translators were under the threat of death if they got the translation wrong, by the King himself. Thus, they used the word kill.
Today, our legal code and has the same theme as the ancient Hebrew language. We have Ist degree homicide, 2nd degree homicide, 3rd degree homicide, manslaughter, execution, etc. Hmmm. What about roadkill?
Whether one believes in capital punishment or not, that’s their right and freedom to believe. Whether one is a conscientious objector to the military for religious grounds is not the issue. Think the Amish fall into that group. Whether one swats a fly is not what I am trying to say.
What I am trying patiently to say is ‘Thou shall not kill’ means thou shall not commit murder…as referenced to your all encompassing word kill.
Q: why did the prophet have visions of death? Because he was being stoned.

My interpretation of Scrpiture is not the issue. I was providing you with the challenges of translations to get it right….some from languages that have literally changed through thousands of years. . To really confuse things, there is the text of the “Children of Israel” when they were carried off to Babylon or Assyria or some place. The exiles. There is the texts of those who were not carried off in defeat and some words in one do not match words in the other ‘orginal’ text. Then there is the problem for translators of words which are lost forever in meaning. Like, what does that word mean? Even in Hebrew, the word does not exist anymore. So, you will see footnotes by scholars that say “unknown meaning, but it is similar in sound to this other word over there when spoken. And, of course, oral language preceded written language since man first stomped grapes.
Most agree that the oldest text is the Book of Job. There is an animal mentioned in Job that to this day, nobody can translate the word or know what it means. What kind of animal it was will probably remain a mystery. Thou shall not kill is not a mystery and all ancient texts have that command written exactly the same, using the same Hebrew word in spelling and meaning.
Yes, Punchy, I neatly avoided your question. War is Hell – George Armstrong Custer.
Custer plenty blew bighorn——Biker Bill.

That’s very old Testament of you Todd.
I remember when the Iraq War broke out I was in Reno for the weekend playing music on the Reno Fun Train, my gig for 20 years, in the winter and there were protests by both sides protesting and supporting the war. Everyone was yelling at each other protesting their side in front of the Courthouse. One side were pro war and carrying bibles saying we are Gods chosen ones and we were justified in the bombing of Baghdad. I later walked back into town and a young Jehovah’s Witness was standing on the corner passing out literature. I asked him what the bible had to say about war and he thought for a moment and said”Jesus believes we should love one another”. That gave me faith in the Christian message.

I searched ‘morning after pill’ and this came up. Not sure if it’s what you are referring to, because you don’t seem to understand the clinical terms.
https://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/plan-b#1
Or are you referring to RU-486?
https://www.rxlist.com/mifeprex-ru486-side-effects-drug-center.htm
You seem to not want to understand the beginning of human life and why it’s important in light of modern scientific discoveries and breakthroughs in medical technology.
We can talk all day long about different pills and what public opinion is concerning abortion. We first need to come to terms about when human life begins. I chose to believe it begins when the double helix is formed. At that point, all of the information of a unique human life is formed. You can believe differently based on public opinion polls, pagan religion or goodness knows what else.
It is pointless to go around and around the barn with you on issues that have been thoroughly covered before since you just keep hammering the same questions that I’ve answered before and it doesn’t seem to make any impression on your brain.

Fair enough Scott. At what week do you believe human life begins? Ted Cruz, for example, thinks 20 weeks is a good time to end he options of abortion.
“Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) on Wednesday urged his state’s legislature to move quickly and pass a bill banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
“House Bill 2 is an important step that will strengthen protections of innocent, unborn life and improve the safety and health of Texas women,” Cruz said of the bill in a statement.
The Texas House approved the abortion bill on Tuesday, and Cruz called on the state Senate to press forward on the measure.
“I hope the Texas Senate will take swift action to pass this legislation for the good of all Texas children and their mothers,” he said.”

Paul Emery actually represents the bankrupt left quite well. They are for abortion at any time yet let child murders alone to live out a full life. Amazing. And then to have the gall to quote the Bible to justify a “no war” position is further evidence of a mental issue.

Paul @ 7:30…..
If the real issue is civilians caught in hot zones all over the world and there is blood on Uncle Sam’s hands, why didn’t you just come out and say so? That is a fair complaint. Make love not war. I get it.
Actually, if everybody just concentrated on the 1st Commandment, then the rest would take care of itself. Jesus came along later and set the bar even higher. So, if you followed the first two commandments (Christian) the rest would take care of itself…in a perfect world.
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Matt.22 Verses 34 to 40 – Bible, King James Version
But, everybody has an opinion.
Abortion? Give unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar’s and unto God that which is God’s? People are always looking for hard and fast rules….and loopholes. Hard and fast rules is my definition of religion. Not very flattering. Leaves out the heart.
Nobody asked, but I believe life passes through the womb, not originating in the womb. That puts me at odds with pro-choice. Yet, I believe in capital punishment. Talk about a paradox. Conversely, folks believe in choice, yet oppose capital punishment. Another paradox. A man can say there is no God, yet his heart rages against God, another paradox. Some believe in the god of science, the god of human discovery, the god of the work ethic, the god of nature…..most believe in the god of self, having the final say.
Any moons ago, I was challenged to provide an example of greater good or lesser evil. My mind went straight to Nazi Germany. Fellow is hiding Jews in the attic. Nazis knock on the door and ask if he is hiding any Jews in there. The fellow answers, “No”. Guess that makes him a Liar! Oh well.
Everybody has a right to their opinion. And if you get down to the nitty gritty, my opinion only matters to me. And your opinion only matters to you. And no one else can live my life but me and I cannot live another’s life, no matter how great the temptation. Nor should anyone have that kind of power. That puts me in conflict with much of the Left. Yet, there is a reason why we have stop signs and courts. People are messy things. I am a messy thing.
Some progressive womenfolk say we males cannot even discuss the abortion issue because we do not have an uterus. Then, out of the social justice side of their mouths, they say you don’t need a uterus to be a woman.

Paul at 9:12 – “Fair enough Scott. At what week do you believe human life begins?”
You know, Paul – at this point it’s obvious you don’t even read my posts. Either that or you can’t retain information for more than 10 or 20 seconds. I’ve told you directly on more than one occasion and in this thread I told you again. Where that belief leads as far as legislation goes is an entirely other matter. I don’t plan to run around shooting abortionists. I can’t control what other humans do just with laws. But we can cut through the lies and crap and start having an honest view of what abortion is and isn’t. Abortion is – by definition – the ending of a human life. Always. Medical fact. There are sadly occasions when it is necessary to save the life of the mother. The vast majority of abortions are because the child is unwanted. I find it very difficult or even impossible to have a rational talk with a pro abortion-on-demand advocate because they always go off into the weeds with BS about ‘reproductive rights’ and how I just want to have control over women, etc, etc.
The most idiotic argument is that only women should be able to vote on laws regarding abortion.
As if that will change anything.
