Slow to believe, and slow to cherish.  Maturity is recognized in the deliberateness with which a man adopts his creed. …   Gracian #154

George Rebane

Trump needs a court jester.  In olden days wise kings employed a court jester to provide scheduled entertainment and also ad hoc off-the-cuff remarks during court proceedings.  The court jester was most likely one the wisest people in the kingdom, and his function was to be the commissioned observer of courtly affairs, national politics, and a sanctioned critic of the king.  He performed all those functions through the use of humorous and witty metaphors, allegories, parables, etc – all carefully composed and delivered so as to avoid lese majesty at all costs (e.g. losing his head), yet assuring that the message was understood by selected audiences that always included the king.  Around our dinner table we frequently lament that President Trump lacks a court jester, or better, a close friend who in private can tell him, ‘Donald, cut that crap out, you again stepped on your good news, and allowed your enemies to instead focus the news cycle on your recent asinine tweet.’  Readers know that I am a supporter of almost all of the president’s policies, but no fan of the brash and seemingly thoughtless persona that he projects.  Employing a modern version of the court jester might help.  (more here)

The Trump/Russia affair has now become a tangled web of events, pronouncements, discoveries, statements, etc all resulting in a mish-mash from multiple sources at various times over the last years that antedate the 2016 election.  For those of us who dabble in debates about all the ins and outs of this affair, knowing and keeping straight what happened when instigated by whom and so on becomes a necessity to keep from sounding like some overzealous naif.  NPR has performed a public service to provide this information in an accessible graphic timeline that can be accessed here.  Enjoy your research.  (See, I can say something nice about a news outlet with a marked list to port.)

‘Congressional Reform Act of 2018’ is an email making the rounds that spells out how a reformed Congress should be term-limited and compensated.  The basic message is that congress critters should get reasonable wages, benefits (e.g. healthcare, SS, retirement, …) like the rest of us, and no extraordinary sinecures that make politics a career from which politicians become millionaires.  I shared this with a longtime close friend who is also a debate buddy because he is well-read and sits a bit left of my perch.  His concern about such a reform is that it “would complete the takeover of the US Government by the wealthy classes as only the independently wealthy people could afford to hold a Congressional seat.”  First, it appears that this argument promotes the established congressional careers of politicians of modest means becoming rich beyond their salaries in the course of their service.

My concern is that such riches are accumulated by the money-grubbing politicians by doing ‘favors’ to special interests that result in the misspending of public billions so that they can garner their private millions – ‘Always make as much as quickly as possible since you may be thrown out in the next election.’  I tend to favor the well-to-do politician over the pauper.  The well-off can afford to practice the ideology that they touted while running for office; that has been true since the days of our Founders.  And in general, these same folks are more likely to be better read and aware of what’s happening in the nation and the world.  By making politics a regular job for dedicated people, instead of a get rich quick career for hucksters, we would avoid double dummies like Maxine Waters and Hank Johnson (‘Guam would tip over.’) to decide public policies and how tax dollars should be spent.

[22aug18 update]  President Trump definitely had a bad day yesterday with the guilty pleas and findings of Cohen and Manafort.  Cohen’s pleading guilty on two counts of ‘election fraud’ for the payoffs to two women for their silence on their alleged encounters with citizen Donald Trump are politically most damaging, and possibly could even be legally damaging.  There the charge is that his payoffs to salvage his image as a candidate were really unreported and illegal spending to influence the election.  That’s now just an allegation by his former lawyer Cohen, but if it becomes a legal finding, then we have entered onto a very slippery slope that drops off to no one knows where.  Many people will then reasonably argue that any such unreported spending by a candidate to improve or maintain his image in the eyes of the voters would be judged an equally culpable attempt by the candidate to influence the election.  Qualifying acts of crime would then range from spending to have a facelift in order to appear younger to hiding monies spent for surreptitious medical procedures that cover up any sort of infirmity that would reduce the suitability of the candidate in the eyes of the electorate.  I could go on, but you get the picture that all of such ‘cosmetic applications’ would then come to question as possible criminal perpetrations of fraud.

[23aug18 update]  We note that our ever racially sensitive lamestream is totally ignoring the violent land grab by South Africa’s socialist cum communist government, taking without compensation the lands of people of the wrong skin color and giving it to those with the correct skin color.  It follows perfectly their far-left agenda – thou shalt not criticize collectivist policies no matter how incoherent.  The sad thing is the continued silence of our own feds both at State and the UN.

The Dems’ bankable bureaucrats are a gift that keeps giving.  The most recent is the timely revelation of Duncan Hunter (R-CA) embezzling campaign funds during 2009-16 that was tracked for months and could have been exposed long ago.  But such findings and announced indictments by a left-leaning deep state are not to be wasted, instead they are banked until the most fortuitous time for exposure.  I would like to see someone delve into possible communications between the investigators and the Dem leadership regarding the timing.  The decision when to release such valuable dirt was not made by some faceless snuffy in some faceless building.

The law and related jurisprudence is a foggy field that fills the coffers of charlatans aka lawyers who can argue equally any side of an issue that promises profit.  The example du jour is today’s circus of legal beagles buzzing about whether using personal funds for hush money is legal or not, even if the bought silence about a past non-criminal act may bear on the outcome of an election.  From here this seems like a straightforward question with an easy answer.  Instead, barristers from notable law schools take totally opposite positions on the media, so that viewers are left with more evidence that not only is justice blind, it is also totally arbitrary (ignorant?).  It isn’t the law that decides the matter, but them that can afford the best mouthpiece.  Exit question: do you really think that all the lawyers arguing the issue really believe what they are spouting, or are some of them in the bamboozle-for-bucks business?

Paul at 1:42 – “Victory for Mueller…”. Whoopee. Absolutely nothing to do with the election or Russia or Trump.
Cohen got caught cheating on taxes. Again – nothing to do with the election or Russia or Trump.
So Cohen will fabricate a story about Trump and the girlies that will make Mueller happy and Mueller will let Cohen go free after cheating on millions in taxes.
Why didn’t the govt bother to charge Cohen and Manifort for these crimes committed long before Trump was POTUS?
    Funny how the govt works.

Sorry scotty boy and toddles BUT, Cohen testified under oath that trump directed him to make unreported hush money payments to Stormy and the others before the election. This is a clear violation of campaign finance laws, which has everything to do with the election. Will trump testify to anything under oath? According to Rudy G. to do so would be a ‘perjury trap’ because trump would probably lie.

“would complete the takeover of the US Government by the wealthy classes as only the independently wealthy people could afford to hold a Congressional seat.”
    That’s a pretty weak argument.
The best one I’ve heard is that Congressional staff ends up becoming more important since the elected officials would never get to learn their jobs.
As a practical matter, I think that’s also fairly weak in a lot of cases. When you see how incredibly stupid a Maxine Waters or Hank Johnson is, I mean, just listen to them speak, it’s fairly obvious that their employees do the real lifting in that office.

Come on everyone, give Paul his victory. Well done. It’s embarrassing to Trump if nothing else and who knows, one of those guys might cough up some tidbit that can bring down the government.
Any slight push towards the precipice has got to feel good. For all I know, in 100 years, the conflagration that Paul is hoping for might actually end up with a good result.

Robert Cross. I would hold my horses if I were you. Non Disclosures agreement to are legal. If Cohen used campaign funds to pay the black mailers with campaign funds, that is a no-no. Trump paying for the NDAs out of his pocket or corporate pocket is legal. I would just sit and wait, but be my guess.
“And Trump would probably just lie”. No, it’s called a perjury trap. They never charged Scotter Libby for leaking about the CIA office chair warmer Valerie Flume or whatever her name was. They were after Cheney and Bush to bring them down. They got Libby on a perjury trap by jailing a reporter and feeding her bogus information, then asking her leading questions. And she thought at the time she was telling the truth…until she realized she got duped. And she never wrote one article about Libby, lol. They never charged Martha Steward with insider trading. They got her on a perjury trap. Do you know why Bubba said “it depends on what the definition of is is”? He saw the perjury trap laid out before him.
Everybody (Leftinistas) says Trump is stupid, losing his mind, needs to removed from office via the 25th Amendment, lost his mind. Ok, if that is true, then all Trump has to say is “I cannot recall”. Works like a charm.

    From the Hill –
This obviously is not the set of crimes that special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed to pursue. As noted by the openly skeptical trial judge in this case, Mueller clearly was pursuing President Trump and not these particular crimes. The question now is whether these convictions will further concentrate Manafort on flipping against Trump. If not, Mueller could be left looking like the guy who showed up at a bass fishing competition with a trophy deer head. It may be an impressive eight count buck of a defendant, but still is not the game he was supposed to catch.
The question rather is who should have prosecuted Manafort and why.
There is an incoherent element to the case brought by the special counsel. Mueller transferred the investigation of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to the Southern District of New York despite those alleged crimes being related in part to the 2016 election and, in a surprise deal with prosecutors, Cohen pleaded guilty earlier in the day to eight counts of bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance violations. Yet, Mueller retained an array of financial crimes by Manafort that are far removed from the election. The only reason for this was to obtain leverage.
Trump, however, could give Manafort precisely that benefit with a presidential pardon. Indeed, unlike Cohen, who could easily face state charges, the legal jeopardy for Manafort is more solidly based in federal claims that can be fully addressed in a pardon. Manafort thus far has been “all in” on that strategy. He has remained silent and loyal to Trump.
Conventional wisdom holds that this prosecution was a clever play for leverage over a key potential witness. In the end, however, this move on Manafort could prove to be a serious miscalculation. By not transferring the financial crimes to the local district attorney, Mueller gave Manafort a better chance for a pardon by making himself part of the calculation.
If Mueller had transferred the case, he still would have had the leverage from any conviction but would not have given Trump the rationale for issuing a pardon as a way of confirming what Trump portrays as a runaway federal investigation. In such a scenario, Manafort ultimately would emerge as the only true winner, not because of his innocence, but because of his associations. If that windfall scenario plays out for Manafort, the man he may want to thank is not Trump but Mueller.

Scotty boy — It seems a federal court is calling it the truth as are the law enforcement agencies and defense council, tax cheat and all. I think I will go with their opinion over yours.
Bill — It has nothing to do with the NDAs, it’s about the money. Among other things, Cohen pleaded guilty to two counts of making illegal campaign contributions, he stated that he made those payments “at the direction of a candidate for federal office,” (an as yet unnamed person that is obviously trump) for the purpose of” influencing the election.” That the purpose was to influence the election makes them unreported campaign contributions. Legal experts agree that if trump was out of office he too would have been indicted because they were made at his behest and because he repaid Cohen it makes him a co-conspirator in the commission of a felony.
About the perjury trap, trump himself said that whatever he said would be considered a lie even though it was true. Truth has become a political football it seems. The truth is the truth, the perception of what the truth is becomes a wholly different matter beyond a reasonable doubt.

Well, legal experts do not agree. But, in times like these, we are all legal experts on campaign finance laws. My starting point is the former FEC chairman who crafted the law. Suddenly everybody knows the complexities and big grey areas of campaign finance laws. Thus, my hold your horses comment. The rest was just filler.

Abraham Lincoln once asked some folks that if you called a dog’s tail a leg, how many legs would a dog have? They replied five legs. “No, the dog would have four legs” countered Abe. Calling a dog’s tail a leg does make it a leg. Calling something a campaign donation or expense, doesn’t make it a campaign donation or expense.

So Trump is feeling sorry for Manifort for being found guilty of multiple tax felonies. Poor guy, such a nice man. Hmmm isn’t that what Al Capone was found guilty of? Makes sense then that anyone found guilty of tax evasion would gather Trumps sympathy, Trump tweets:
“I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family. “Justice” took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to “break” – make up stories in order to get a “deal.” Such respect for a brave man!”

Re: update 22 August: Trump had a bad day.
Depends how you look at a bad day. At first glance, politically it was. And yes, the sudden cacophy of exploding heads about “trying to influence an election via campaign funds” could potentially lead to a slippery slope and big mess for anyone running for office. Spending money by a candidate to feed the press coffee and croissants to butter them up? The possibilities are endless.
While I totally understand the media feeding frenzy once the sharks smelled blood in the water, I am puzzled by the whole thing. Didn’t everybody know that Cohen paid off ones like Stormy who came knocking years after the fact looking to get some shakedown money weeks before the election? Wasn’t that old news? Didn’t Cohen do that to protect his boss/client Donald Trump? Who out there who even casually follows the news did not hear about that months ago? Remember CNN’s “24/7 All Stormy All The Time”? The celebrity status her lawyer became overnight, like Ms. Democratic Socialist Cortez? Is this new news?
Reminds me of earlier this month (first week in August, 2018) on a quiet no news Sunday, suddenly the press went on a feeding frenzy about the purpose of the Trump Tower meeting was to get dirt on Hillary! They were foaming at the mouth. Nevermind Trump more than a year earlier said that was the purpose of the meeting…to get dirt on Hillary…at least 3 times? Weren’t there already Congressional hearings on the matter, didn’t Punchy call Jr a greaser multiple times because of that meeting? Or was that Jarred? I get “the greaser” confused. Like, it’s old news….but repackage as something new, lol.
    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump
Most politicians would have gone to a meeting like the one Don jr attended in order to get info on an opponent. That’s politics!

Newsflash: There is no limits on how much a candidate can contribute to his own campaign.
Newsflash: Cohen copped a plea for a crime that is not a crime. He plead guilty to a something that is not a crime. It’s only a crime if it’s an unreported campaign donation or expenditure. It’s only a campaign expenditure/contribution unless there is another reasonable explanation for the expenditure. Not wanting his wife to know or not wanting to look bad are reasonable other explanations. But, you guys can put on your lawyer hats and go at it.
Bottomline: Not really a bad day at all. Not any worse that the Gold Star Dad or a host of others I can think of off the top of my head from Access Hollywood audio tape to the release of the Golden Shower Dossier. In fact, the Dems should just drop the pretense and write up the Articles of Impeachment today, if they haven’t done so by last night or last month.
Real Bottomline: This Cohen thang is just charade. They don’t need no stinking Cohen. As suggested a couple of weeks ago, just convict Trump of spitting on the sidewalk in the kangaroo court in the press, call it a misdemeanor, and impeach the sumbitch.
Hmmm. Did the Clinton Campaign declare the campaign funds used to pay for dirt with the Dossier (with its scandalous tantilazing details) to influence an election? Nevermind, that ain’t the point, is it?

You Just Do Not Get It
Our lefty commentators just do not get it? Here is as clear explanation by Salena Zito on Why Trump’s supporters won’t care about Cohen and Manafort’s convictions.
In the aftermath of Tuesday’s news that both former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his lawyer Michael Cohen were found on the wrong side of the law in separate court cases, the question asked most frequently by the press, Democrats and “Never Trump” Republicans is, “Where do Trump voters go now?”
The answer is the same that it has always been since they first started asking it Nov. 9, 2016: With Trump.
This new conservative populist coalition is not the fluke the political class hoped it was. Donald Trump did not cause it, he is just the result of it, so no matter what he does, it continues. It is predicated on them, not him.
The coalition is a strike at not just tone deafness in both Congress and the White House but also high levels of incompetence, negligence and shoddy performance at agencies, as well as inept social services, a bloated and incompetent bureaucracy, endless wars and multinational agreements and treaties that don’t benefit average people.
These voters knew who Trump was going in, they knew he was a thrice-married, Playmate dating, Howard Stern regular who had the morals of an alley cat. They were willing to look past all of that because of how institutions had failed their communities for three consecutive presidencies.
Right now the value of Trump to the Trump voter is he is all that stands between them and handing the keys to Washington back over to the people inside Washington. That’s it. He’s their only option. You’ve got to pick the insiders or him.

Great article Russ. Says it all. We have no place else to go.
Another antedolal story, but compliments Russ’s great lik above.
Yesterday, (Wed) I heard a elderly lady on the radio. Life long Democrat, voted R first time ever in 2016. Religious lady to boot. When asked about how this Cohen-Manafort news will affect her view of Trump, she immediately said we all knew he was a “playboy” long ago. She said she has “no use for his Tweets”, refuses to follow or read his tweets, and wishes he would cut them out. But, she is sticking with Trump. There is no other alternative, voting for liberals “not an option” said the life long Democrat Party voter and she has had a long life.
When pressed what Trump should do now…..fire Meuller, pardon Manafort, she said what Trump should do is get back to holding rallies and soldier on.
Agree. Just soldier on. As the Lefties moralize us and appear dumbfounded that anyone could not abandon Trump now, we knew he was a regular on Howard Stern a long time ago and Trump is still hands down better than any Leftist option. It’s a no brainer.

Clapper: Obama Launched the Intelligent Community Assessment of Trump Campaign.
Did Obama weaponized foreign Intelligence Community to attack a domestic target? Yes, Next Question?
Truth be told, when this editor tried to look at the tweet it appeared she is blocked. Others are claiming Twitter is saying they’re not allowed to see it … Maria herself asking her followers if they can see the tweet speaks volumes.
Yup, this was an amazing admission, basically claiming Obama ‘set off’ the original investigation which led to the Mueller investigation, but what’s even stranger is that Twitter would feel the need to perhaps ‘hide’ this tweet. Is Clapper admitting Obama started this mess not part of a healthy conversation, Jack?

    Russ,
This is how I see it. Granting immunity to the National Enquirer publisher already. going back to 1990 with his relationship with Trump and get him to say anything they want him to. They can make life rather uncomfortable for any who oppose. Remember Manafort? Pulled his wife out of the shower at 6:00 am with guns drawn, then not only got his bail nixed, they tossed him in prison. Not on the yard, mind you, but kept him in solitary confinement.
CEO Pecker will be sure to “compose” to avoid any poking around his own closet and now there is no way to disprove anything. Under immunity. He will be going to state court in NY soon enough and be deposed. No cross examination. Bet he has some wild stories to tell over cocktails about the baby with the horns of devil and man gives birth to self stories over the years, but I digress.
Add Cohen’s deal. For both: no trial, no judge, no challenging, no cross examination, just whatever they say. And no rulings by a federal judge to see if what Cohen pleaded to was even a crime committed on count 7 and 8. It’s all whatever MSNBC says, whatever the prosecutors say, whatever Lanny Davis say. They can weave this into a unindicted co-conspirator of the crime…..Trump did a conspiracy involving a criminal activity to influence an election…snagged by campaign finance law!
Bottomline. They know they cannot indict Trump, so all this playing to the impeachment report. The Russian Collusion story didn’t come up with something, the obstruction of justice is dead for now, the Tower will be just allegations of criminal activity or open questions about plotting with the Russians, and….voila….we have a nice impeachment report full of insinuating things that are real crimes or sound like real crimes, but close enough for handgrenades and TDS.
Then we will go through months and months of hearings and writing up the Articles of Impeachment…it’s already written, just adding unchallenged stuff now that sound real bad. The media is going out it 24/7 and MSNBC is feeding it to the masses as their ratings soar. This whole hoax started before Inaugnation Day. They were talking about impeaching Trump before he was even sworn in.
Then the Senate will not conflict. And no “crimes” happened while Trump was in office, but they are doing the full on carpet bombing now and as we were warned early on, this Russian thing has legs. It’s all they got. And we fell for it by trying to explain the facts to our lower companions across the aisle.
This time I won’t explain too much. Waste of time, unless you are in a ‘I just gotta win a argument’ mood. a will watch them come running over here out of breath with pieces of paper in their hands with the smoking guns saying “Cohen swore under oath! Here, look!”, til the cows come home. Or whatever the next big thing coming every few days.
Meuller is writing his own Golden Shower Dossier. His audience is the Dems. Oh, BTW, I have yet to hear one contrary opinion to their narrative on Comcast owned NBC, MSNBC or Amy’s of the N’s. Even some on Fox are being played. Rating, baby!

Well I be. Pat Buchannon of all folks laid it out. I figured he would be talking about China and was waiting for some other writer to put it all together from the National Review or The Federalist or NY Post or the Hill or WSJ. Pat is first…the first on many to come. Be careful what you wish for.
Welcome to my parlor said the spider to the fly.

PaulE 1021am in the Sandbox – Here’s the next paragraph to your quote, “Few observers dispute that farm murders are a problem in South Africa, which has an overall murder rate of about 34 per 100,000 people, one of the highest in the world. But some farmers’ organizations and right-wing groups contend that the black majority government is not doing enough to protect white farmers, who they say are particularly vulnerable to attack.”
But the point you want to divert from is that white farmers’ land will be expropriated by the ANC-government of South Africa. And in the process white farmers will be murdered, as they were in Zimbabwe. But more importantly, SA, the former jewel of sub-Sahel Africa, will become yet another failed state completing the ongoing spread of misery over its black population. And that will beg the question in spades (not to be found in the lamestream media), why are sub-Sahel Africans uniformly incapable of forming beneficent governments?
