It’s Fourth of July time again.  Tonight the gates open at 630pm for the Music in the Mountains Patriotic Pops Concert on the great lawn of our fairgrounds.  Lots of great music and ceremony and flyover and food and drink and … .  Come with your family to celebrate our declaration of independence.  The photo shows the stage last year with the vets saluting the Pledge of Allegiance.  (more here)

Trump removes another Obama-era disaster. “The Trump administration will begin directing schools and colleges to adopt race-neutral admissions standards, the Education Department said Tuesday, reversing Obama-era guidelines that encouraged the use of race to promote diversity.”  Perhaps merit will again have top billing in qualifying a student for admission.  Ever thought of having two classes of colleges, one for serious study of productive majors, and another for feel good majors filled with mandated ratios of race, gender, sexual orientation, sensitivity to pressure, safe places, and trigger warnings at every turn.

[4jul18 update]  This version of Putin’s Plan was sent by a reader – worth considering.  And as another commenter has astutely asked in these pages, who in America are the people sowing discontent, incivility, and rending the social order?

Socialist Ocasio-Cortez Is “Future Of Our Party” announces DNC chairman Tom Perez.  This vision has been firmly in the mind of our academic types for a generation, and has now been also implanted in the carefully fashioned non-critical minds of their students.  These are the younger people today who neither understand nor see any other future save one with a large government assuring that all will give according to their ability, so that each will receive according to their need. “Ever thought of having two classes of colleges”
I think that would be a great idea, I had been musing about that myself. Evergreen State College is a good step in that direction.
Not just productive majors, but perhaps a reboot on classics departments, proper archaeology , really fine foreign language learning, etc. Maybe a combination of STEM and one of those ‘great books’ private colleges. Pure meritocracy. Perhaps a bit less money spent on student ‘fun’ facilities seeing as how you can run most of a school with folding tables in an old mall somewhere.
I really dig the idea. I honestly don’t mind if the .gov continued to heavily subsidize all the useless programs as long as they can be done in a separate location and keep their mitts off of the ‘good’ school.

You can tell who they are afraid of on the SCOTUS short list by this kind of fakenews attack, kind of makes you warm up to her as an option –
An arm of the NAACP on Monday falsely accused a potential Trump nominee of ruling against a black worker in a discrimination claim.
Other progressive organizations making the same claim against the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals judge and former Notre Dame law professor include the Alliance for Justice and the Center for American Progress.
“As a judge, Barrett sided against an African American worker who had been transferred to another store because of a company’s policy of segregating their employees by race and ethnicity, finding that the company’s ‘separate-but-equal arrangement is permissible,’” complained AFJ.
Likewise, CAP’s “Why Courts Matter” account claimed Barrett “sided against an African American worker in favor of a company’s ‘separate-but-equal arrangement,’ flying in the face of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
But Barrett wasn’t even on the Seventh Circuit at the time that case was decided. On June 20, 2017, a three-judge panel ruled 3-0 against the AutoZone employee, ruling that because his pay, benefits, and responsibilities did not change with the transfer, he was not “adversely affect[ed]” under the statute. Barrett wasn’t confirmed by the Senate until October 2017.

“Following a deep internal probe, journalist Ali Watkins, 26, will be transferred to the NYT’s main office in New York City – where she will spend her time under a mentor on a new beat, the Times reported on Wednesday.”
very funny….I’ll just bet she will.
That’s news reporting in the Trump Era I’m afraid.

Sometimes it’s good to just stick with the “classics”!
Has anyone pinged jeffy to see if they taught Ms. Watkins technique at Northwestern!

From The Union newspaper today we get lectured by the current editor on the absolute neutral bias of The Union – and for extra measure, what’s wrong with America.
“Americans all across the country are making their voices heard, outraged over what they’re seeing out of Washington D.C., where we’re reminded elections have consequences and November 2016 led to the stark change in course on many issues President Trump promised, if elected — including one change so stark that the country’s outrage led him to change course in his own policy of separating families that crossing the border illegally.”

Brian – I think I found part of the problem! It’s your “stark editorial course!” BTW, the Trump change you revile most was to begin actually enforcing existing law. You can’t miss that little feature, can you?

BobH 1145am – Miss it he did indeed, along with the stark observation that the demonstrators nationwide were grossly misinformed as to the entire ‘separation of children’ issue. None of that has been reported by the ‘neutral bias’ outlets.

“The United States has 2,700,000 minors separated from parents in prison; 400,000 children in foster care; 760,000 separated from parents in the military, and there are over 16,000 children in insalubrious shelters in New York City alone.”
Yes, the CUE has it wrong and what is being done now isn’t that much different… no, kids aren’t being separated from the parents (whether they are the parents or not is generally not known), but they aren’t being put into nice shelters, either, or let out to go off and blend into the USA as before… they are for the most part being kept in medium security lockups with their ‘parents’.
If the feds aren’t able to get the 20 day restriction lifted, they may well go back to a variation of separating the kids from the adults claiming to be their parents… in 20 days of being held as a family, or, if the left really feels like pushing for it, decriminalizing illegal border crossings.
Good luck with that… the GOP would fight it all the way up to the November election and decriminalizing illegal border crossings would end up being a big Red Wave generator.

In a statement published by CNN, Buena Ventura Martin-Godinez criticized the Trump administration’s “harsh” immigration policies. “The laws here are harsh. And people don’t have hearts,” the asylum seeker claimed.

And why did you want to come here?
Will she go to the gas chamber or the re-location camp?
No – she’ll be well fed, reunited with her daughter and sent packing.
    Harsh?
    She doesn’t know shit.
Look folks – get acquainted with reality.
Unlike Time mags doctored BS, she looks OK to me. Probably put on a few LBs while being treated ‘harshly’.
Go home and try again via the legal route. California might have free health care for you next time.
