Today’s Union has an excellent editorial – ‘Our View: This community is all our backyard’ – in which it takes to task those of us who tend to oppose anything that will bring needed change to our county.  The editorial goes through a number of recent and current development initiatives that have again run into strong headwinds from the usual contingents.  Even though our electeds make a significant contribution to the sand in our gears, but “we can’t lay all the problems we face at the doorstep of our elected leaders. Our community could use a sea change about what shape it should take and what direction it should go.”  And in these pages we have been promoting such a sea change for years as our population stagnates, families move elsewhere, and potential new businesses give us a pass once they get a good whiff of the county’s new political face.  I give a big ‘Amen’ to that sea change, and a H/T to Bob Crabb for his contribution (filched from the 24mar18 Union) to the dialogue.

This weekend the nation’s progressively propelled pubertistas are marching in opposition to what they know not, but easily accept as ‘gun violence’.  In a recent post we covered the launch of this nascent lamestream-lauded movement under ‘Progressives Pander Pubertistas’.  What should continue to interest all of us is how the country’s adults view these marches comprised of ignorant and emotional young people, enthralled in the first flood of hormones evolved to mediate the journey from childhood to an adult.  Easily assembled and directed, all of them sport brains that clinical science tells us are yet years from being fully formed for taking reliably rational decisions.  To see who seeks to benefit from franchising these anxious and anxiety ridden works-in-progress, just take a look at the politicians, organizations, and media that promote them.  Long ago our Founders built on the then already known progress of human development, and made it law of the land that no one could be elected into a federal policy making office before the age of twenty-five.  And we also know how past childrens’ crusades have ended.

[25mar18 update]  Meteorologists, you gotta love ‘em.  The recent couple of weeks here in Northern California have again amply demonstrated their prowess at forecasting what they are paid to forecast – the weather.  These guys make economists and stock pickers look good, and I have no idea how they steel themselves before accepting another paycheck for their work.  As one who has some acquaintance with estimation theory, the work of the meteorologists is below sophomoric; most certainly, none of their computer models work.  It is clear that any claim of having improved their sophistry over the years is not due to their increased understanding of the processes that drive the weather.  Their performance, such as it is, can all be laid to having a better view (data and imagery from orbit and reporting surface stations) of what is ‘upstream’ of their prediction area.  Then they look at past records of what such observations have actually delivered, and go from there.  But even then they screw up, apparently never having heard of the good Rev Bayes as their ‘100% chance of rain’ pronouncements confirm.

[28mar18 update]  WSJ’s leftwing columnist William Galston may have had an epiphany which, in all fairness, I must recognize.  In the paper’s 28mar18 edition he writes a piece on ‘The Case for Responsible Nationalism’, and surprises us with –

National governments are not required to value the citizens of other countries as highly as their own. A degree of self-preference is morally justified and politically essential. Leaders in advanced countries are not obligated to practice global utilitarianism or lift up the global poor at the expense of their working and middle classes. … There will probably never be a real world government. There are no “global citizens.” People belong to sovereign states with different languages, cultures and institutions. Free societies are composed of citizens who agree to share a common fate and to work out their destiny through accountable politics. They undertake special responsibilities toward their fellow citizens, and the policies of free governments must take these reciprocal commitments into account.

A frying pan can be deadly. But how many people can you kill and how fast can you kill with a frying pan?
A semi-auto with a bunch of large capacity magazines can kill a lot more people a lot faster that an angry housewife with a cast iron frying pan.
Ban semi-autos with detachable magazines. You are a crappy deer hunter if you need a banana clip to get the job done. Deer just stop and stare at me when I come up on them. Even po’ l’il Donnie Trump Jr. could probably do it in one shot.

re ArchieB 1005am – please note how our progressive friends like to continually orbit the ‘deer hunting’ argument for which the Second Amendment was NOT included in our Constitution. It gives them such joy because they believe that you, like the lion’s share of their constituents, know no better. And therefore its recounting will also be an epiphany, no matter how frequently revisited.

walt 935am oooh oooh walt I know the answer. The AR-10, a functional equivalent to the Ruger Mini-30.
jon smith 833am you are a blithering idiot today, getting both my name and other facts wrong. Good job!
Let’s be clear, people; I stated a truism… a .223 Remington/5.56NATO round is centerfire, and there’s nothing magic about the AR-15 firing it. The Ruger Mini-14 is functionally equivalent to the AR-15 and the bullet won’t be any less dangerous whether shot point blank or from 100 yards away. Mini-14 box magazines can also be had that hold up to 40 rounds.
But even Feinstein’s latest proposed gun ban list exempts sales of the Ruger. Why is that? Equal protection of the law and all that? It’s because there are too many Ruger owners to risk pissing them off and they don’t look like the AR-15.
A tiny round like the .22LR is also deadly. Even a .22Short target round can kill, I suppose. But they aren’t centerfire and hold a fraction of the powder that a 5.56NATO can.
The mother of all centerfire .22 rifle cartridges, around since 1950, a popular target and varmint round:

Just what weapons do snipers use? ( The same ones that most hunters use for game hunting)

I plead ignorance. Have not read one article on The March Against Guns or bothered to watch one clip. With that said, I am interested from hearing from those who watched the march on the tellie or Internet.
1). Did they talk a lot about what just happened in Maryland? Shooter dead, 2 injured.
    2) Did they talk about reforming the Promise Program?
    3) Did they talk about more money for mental health?
    4) Were there discussions about metal detectors at schools? Some are opposed to the concept, but a few large schools use them. Just wondering.
5). Read here that one of the coordinators of the March Of Mad Mothers Against Drunk Ducks were they same bunch who organized the Women’s March. If they don’t believe in biological gender, how can they have a Women’s March? ….but I digress.
The majority of teachers may not be the best choice to arm themselves. Look what a Clusterguck they have done to our education system. If they can mess up that badly educating our youth, just think how many ways they can mess up usung an inanimate object.
    Short article.

Posted by: George Rebane | 25 March 2018 at 10:15 AM – ah yes, the old 2nd Amendment excuse for the right to own ever more powerful weaponry so’s we can keep up an imaginary parity with what the gub’mint is packin’ in case, you know, they get out of control and start trampling our other Constitutional rights.
The gub’mint gets to have .50 Cal. sniper sticks, so we get to have some too!
But wait! The gub’mint has to only pull the trigger once with their M-16s to unload 600+ rounds a minute at us yahoos, where’s we are getting finger cramps trying to toss a hun’nert rounds back at them with our measly Ar-15s.
It ain’t fair! Where’s the par force in that?

Not legal in CA I guess (15 years ago or so?). You can make that argument given the amount of vibrant diversity here. Products that require a certain amount of care should probably be left to the flyover states.

Thanks for jogging my memory. The rifle was mass produced for years and sometime in the later 50’s or by the mid-sixties, the rifle was converted to military purposes. In fact, several of the military conversions were taken straight from “hunting” gun designs.
All in all, I stand by my assertion that there will be no gun control at the end of the day. Sure, some states will tweak around the edges, but no cigar. Read FLA wants a three day waiting period. In CA, we have a 10 day waiting period, lol.
So far the only tangible change I see coming is the definition of fully auto, or machine gun, or however they define more than one projective fired per trigger pull. Guess that means bump stocks…..something that is easier to make (and less complicated) than making a nut cracker in the garage. Whatever floats their boats.

re ArchieB 1129am – It appears that Mr Bunker again demonstrates his knowledge of America’s history by missing completely the obvious (to non-progressives) fact that as the local constabularies have militarized over the years, the citizens’ ability to own and use their formerly capable firearms has been reduced (both legally and constructively) year after year. How can so much pass these people by without their even complaining to their lamestream outlets that they are made to look like ignoramuses when attempting to discuss issues in polite company? Par force, no matter how diminished, is useless if not accompanied by par comprehension.

Honestly, I doubt that making ‘bump stocks’ illegal even requires a law, it probably falls under the NFA automatically. Obviously, someone could build an electrically run cam or manual crank to repeatedly hit a trigger, and that probably falls under some BATF regulation from the get-go. For all I know, a fat guy is naturally equipped to bump fire any gun due to the natural spring in the front. Much ado about nothing.
Next thing you know, someone will try to make spin on oil filters illegal given the ability to trivially make a suppressor. Hack saw blades, used to shorten barrels, will be next.

My favorite one I’ve read lately (it’s not new) is that the Gabby Giffords Foundation/Corporation/whatever has decided that muzzle loaders are particularly evil since there’s less regulation on them and they tend to have suppressors of some sort.
It’s peculiar since her shooter was a crazy 23(?) year old (ie. over 21) with a 9mm handgun (ie. not a militarystyleassaultrifle) who was a paranoid schizophrenic (ie. crazy), described as left wing/quite liberal (ie. not a nazi), etc.
But, having said that, there’s no money in going after crazy Green Libertarians. I admit that it’s a stretch to get from there to muzzle loaders, but there you go.
