re: Tariffs.
It’s an interesting idea and worth a try I think. My guess is that this is just the first part of an ongoing negotiation and that nobody believes you’ll use a thing until you actually do.
In addition, there’s always the strategic issues of home-sourced raw and manufactured goods. It’s funny how hopeless the US currently is in the production of some goods now, although automating factories might bring some of that home.
Personally, I don’t have any religious attraction to free trade vs. taxes/tariffs. Somehow, the Green Libertarians are in a boat where they justify trade policies based on globalism and unrestricted movement of goods and people…mind you, that’s after years of bitching about evil Republican outsourcing. Trumphate gets you into some weird places, I expect that the political places would be exchanged if the Clinton Crime Family had gotten into office again and her nibs had cooked up the same scheme. Witness historical Bernie Sanders statements on NAFTA.
Another example of days past:
http://money.cnn.com/2016/02/04/investing/obama-oil-tax/index.html
You certainly can’t blame most people for basing politics on gut feel rather than any kind of consistent policy concepts. Personally, I don’t think that you can tell what the side effects will be ahead of time.

Meanwhile, officials fear that were it to experience another big investment loss, it would pass a point of no return and never be able to pay for pension promises.
On the other hand, “protecting” CalPERS means getting more money from its client agencies, which could drive some of them into insolvency, as Hutchings said. This is not a hollow threat: three California cities have already gone bankrupt in recent years, in part because of their ever-increasing pension burdens, and payments have escalated sharply since then.
So on one hand, CalPERS is doing what it has to do to remain financially solvent, but on the other hand its self-protective steps threaten local government solvency.
That’s the crisis in a nutshell.

Scenes 840pm – The 7.5% may be all well and good, but we must all remember that there are only two ways to solve the government debt and unfunded liabilities problem – sustained growth of at least 5% or adopting the Weimar treatment as the ‘final solution’. I don’t think the Left will ever allow economic growth to solve any problem in the land, it would give lie to all that they have preached.

Nevada City’s police chief has resigned. Maybe they don’t need a police chief as such. The officers know what to do. Just pay one officer a little more to take care of the extra pencil pushing the chief used to do.
Robberies have happened in the past but I don’t know how many perps were eventually caught. Complaints have been made and reports filed. Life goes on.
The City Manager is also gone along with the Director of Public Works position. Both of these positions are now be handled by long time employees but not at the pay grades of the previous department heads.

Crowdstrike: My little teenie weenie poking around shows that around $900,000 was transferred from OFA (Organizing for America) to Perkins Coie, which turned around and paid Crowdstrike to do forensic analysis of the DNC computers.
-Perkins Coie was the law firm that was used as the intermediary for Hillary for America, the DNC, and OFA to funnel money for work on the Dossier.
-FEC records as well as federal court records show that Marc Elias, the Perkins Coie lawyer whom the Washington Post reported was responsible for the payments to Fusion GPS on behalf of Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, also previously served as a counsel for OFA. (Toes says Marc Elias also worked as Obama’s personal lawyer)
-OFA is the former Obama For America, the Obama Campaign organization. After Obama won re-election and is prohibited from running for a third term, OFA changed its name to Organizing For America.
-The DNC refused to let the FBI do forensic analysis on its computers. Crowdstrike did the work. Because of the DNC’s refusal to let FBI investigators look at Its computers, no one can with any degree of certainty that da dirty Russians hacked the DNC’s computers.
Not the source of my poking around, but a link that kinda dovetails OFA’s activities.

Tariffs: Not even in the conservative credo. Trump ain’t a politican or an ideologue, except perhaps when it comes to America First and the obviously fact that it really grates on him that “We are being screwed, folks.” Yes, we are being screwed folks.
Heard only a mild outcry from the popinjays here when Trump slapped tariffs on Chinese subsidized solar panels were being dumped on our shores cheaper than the cost to make them. I figured that would have been good news for our domestic solar panel manufactures and our Mean Green Planet Saving Machine with its green jobs. But what do I know? There is a difference between tariffs and trade wars.
My Bottomline:
I am itching to hear more and more about NAFTA. Trump has never backed off saying NAFTA is the worse trade deal ever ever in the history of trade. “Terrible deal. We are getting screwed, folks.” There is something about NAFTA that tilts heavily in Mexico’s favor, big time.
Mexico will be paying for The Wall one way or another. China has always cheated, but its NAFTA that really perks my interest, more than some targeted tariffs for trade violations and manipulations over solar panels and steel. Heck, China refuses to take our recycled Al cans because they are too dirty and gum up their machines. Maybe Kaiser Aluminum will be hiring again….if they haven’t already stripped out their smelters for scrap.

The Trump tariffs will benefit about 140,000 steel and aluminum workers, but will hurt about 6.5 million people who work for companies that use large amounts of steel and aluminum.
Then there’s the retaliation from other countries. If they’re smart, they’ll target the major industries in red states, like agriculture. Even Trump’s biggest local fan boy, Doug LaMalfa, might be tempted to criticize his fearless leader if tariffs imposed by other countries kill the export market for California rice.
If the Republicans are going to run in the mid-terms on the economy and tax cuts, this is not the way to do it.

Oh MAGA Covfefe,
It’s so transparent. Your side (The Leftist Deep State) was been quite busy trying to get rid of everyone in Trump’s inner circle to throw the President off his game and isolate the man. The CIA’s best Crypto -Psychos have been trying to rattle Trump’s cage. Get rid of the person Trump trusts most and without reservation, his confidant Hope Hicks.
Next is Jarad and then they will be gunning for Ivanka. Hope and Ivanka, the two most trusted women in Trump’s inner circle must go. They have been doing what good advisors (and women) do with a man like Trump, i.e., civillize the savage beast, soften the rough edges. It’s working too good and killings the “Trump is Hilter gone mad” narrative.
It’s family that Trump is all about at the core. His kids, his family business, his family Empire. That’s where the fight comes in…attacking Trump’s family to isolate him and throw him for a big loop.
Don’t believe me? Just look at the first poke by Hillary at the first debate. Straight out of the gate she says Trump’s daddy gave him 9 million bucks to start his business. Trump said it wadn’t 9 million, that’s a lie, but he got off track and ok nearly half of the debate to recover. Don’t matter if daddy gave Donald one million, two million, or 6-12 million. He damage was done.
The Deep Administrative State had their best shrinks feeding My Gal that zinger to start the 2016 Presidential debates.
The Leftist Deep State slammed and attacked Hope for over nine hours. Nothing to do with Russian Collusion, just to break her down. Few men could have endured what Hope went through without breaking. Got her to agree to something she did not say.
What was it that Chucky the Clown warned Trump about? Oh yeah, if you mess with the Intel agencies, they have six ways to Sunday to get at you.” Chucky gets all his money from Wall Street banks and he is part of the Lefty Deep State. So is Meuller and Woof Blitzer. Add the Administrative State, Brennen, Intel agencies and a bunch of Dems and the Swamp has a thick layer of pond scum coming to the surface.
Run on the lights and the cockroaches scurry away.

Republicans Accuse Russia of Using Social Media to Roil U.S. Energy Policy

The same Russian operatives accused of manipulating the 2016 U.S. presidential election used inflammatory social media posts to disrupt U.S. energy policy, including inciting environmentalists to protest against pipeline projects, House Republicans said in a report released Thursday.
The report, released by the House Science Committee, said it found evidence Russian-sponsored agents used Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to suppress the research and development of fossil fuels and stymie efforts to expand the use of natural gas and fracking.
“This report reveals that Russian agents created and spread propaganda on U.S. social media platforms in an obvious attempt to influence the U.S. energy market,” Texas Representative Lamar Smith, the chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, said in a statement. “Russian agents attempted to manipulate Americans’ opinions about pipelines, fossil fuels, fracking and climate change.”

Who knew? According to the report, Hillary Clinton was fully aware of Russian efforts;
… Former Secretary of State and then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, with access to intelligence reports, made a private speech in 2014, according to documents from WikiLeaks, which included statements about the struggles of dealing with Russian-backed environmental groups. According to a media report, Secretary Clinton said the following: “We [the State Department and the U.S.] were up against Russia pushing oligarchs and others to buy media. We were even up against phony environmental groups, and I’m a big environmentalist, but these were funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, ‘Oh that pipeline, that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you,’ and a lot of the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”

Don’t know why we even bother with Bobbie. He is just a Russian bot anyway,
Nothing has changed since last June when Mr. Goodwin wrote this:
The coverage of him grew so vicious and one-sided that last August I wrote a column on the unprecedented bias. Under the headline “American Journalism Is Collapsing Before Our Eyes,” I wrote that the so-called cream of the media crop was “engaged in a naked display of partisanship” designed to bury Trump and elect Hillary Clinton.
The evidence was on the front page, the back page, the culture pages, even the sports pages. It was at the top of the broadcast and at the bottom of the broadcast. Day in, day out, in every media market in America, Trump was savaged like no other candidate in memory. We were watching the total collapse of standards, with fairness and balance tossed overboard. Every story was an opinion masquerading as news, and every opinion ran in the same direction—toward Clinton and away from Trump.
For the most part, I blame The New York Times and The Washington Post for causing this breakdown. The two leading liberal newspapers were trying to top each other in their demonization of Trump and his supporters. They set the tone, and most of the rest of the media followed like lemmings.

RobertC 106pm – Mr Cross, that is not a link to any citation of explanatory data, let alone verifiable data. Well maybe it is for you and yours. But making a claim of fact, and then saying, “there’s plenty of information out there …” if one only cares to look for it, provides less than sophomoric support. That is not the way reasoned arguments proceed.
And I have no idea how you deduced from my 1243pm that I was attempting to excuse Trump on the basis of what other presidents did. I and other critical thinkers would like to have a basis for assessing Trump’s performance in that job relative to his predecessors – there is a difference, think about it.
But comparing the performance of the current administration to former administrations is a favorite American pastime practiced by all. These pages are full of charges and counter-charges comparing Obama to his predecessors. Apparently you of the Left cared heaps when Obama and Bush2 were in office, and recently you have conveniently forgotten. No matter.
Scenes 139pm – OK, I understand. And I also understand that our Left has been doing all they can to push us toward a third world economy and social order as exemplified by quite a few of our Latin neighbors. They just don’t want to come out and tell us.

Did you also know that Milania got an “Einstein” green card when she came to the US. Those visas are reserved for people of renown, accomplishments, or with a significant talent. She was dating Trump at the time she got her visa. I wonder just what her significant talent was? She also brought her parents into the country under the program her husband is now trying to halt. Ironic isn’t it.

There ain’t no such thang as a “fact checker”, Bobby C 106pm. There are just people (like the guy at Snopes) with opinions, and as we know, like assholes, most people have an opinion.
If you can’t “fact check” your chosen fact checker, you probably shouldn’t bother using them as a reference.
Todd… I am blown away at your apparent unmasking of “jon smith” as the very silly Linda Campbell, and their response at 629pm seems to be a mea culpa. Congratulations, sir.
Linda Campbell… just wondering… will you be running for the NJUHSD Trustee spot a’gin this year?
