The 2018 Tax Reform Act is legislation that I believe will overall reduce taxes for almost all Americans, and with its business-friendly provisions will give a significant boost to GDP growth.  However, its SALT (state and local taxes) provision disturbs me because it is intrinsically flawed both functionally and, yes, ethically.  The latter because it allows the various taxing jurisdictions to make the wage earner pay more in taxes than the total amount he earned.  SALT bases its tax amounts on the total amount earned before any other mandated taxes, fees, and tributes are paid.  If all taxing jurisdictions practice SALT – say local rate is 25%, state rate is 35%, federal rate is 45% – then the taxpayer may wind up owing more than a 100% of his earnings in taxes.  Such policies are intrinsically unfair and unethical.  The jurisdictions should decide their sequence of taxation – say, first local then state then federal – and each apply their rates to the amount that the taxpayer has left after paying his prior tax obligations.  That way the total taxes may approach 100%, but they will never exceed it like in the above example where the taxes sum to 105% of earnings.

America’s Left either does not understand the use of force by nations, or is consciously working to have our country capitulate to or be destroyed by a foreign power.  As outlined most recently in ‘America’s Checkpoints’, I believe in the former.  It is unconscionable that Democrats like Schumer and Pelosi will hold defense upgrades hostage to their vote buying spending programs.  Without a formidable military feared by our enemies, diplomacy sings castrato.  In short, without credible arms there will be no United States to earn the redistributed monies for our entitlement programs.  And the Left knows this as it plays brinkmanship with what should be a non-partisan funding priority were we truly all Americans.  Mark Helprin of the Claremont Institute lays out the details of the current dire situation in his ‘America’s Alarmingly Archaic Arsenal’.

And jumping from perfidy to insanity, the Left’s class warfare and identity politics cadres have come up with a new one for the campus wars, soon to be seen on a lamestream commentary near you.  The core contention in understanding the new black-white dialogue on campuses is, “One, that civility, as currently practiced in America, is a white construct. Two, that in a campus setting, the “woke” white student’s endeavor to avoid microaggressions against black peers is itself a microaggression—a form of noblesse oblige whereby white students are in fact patronizing students of color. Not only that, but by treating black students with common courtesy and expecting the same in return, white students elide black grievances, bypassing the “race talk” that is supposed to occur in preamble to all other conversations. Got it?”

And it gets worse in the context of reasoned debates in which reason is now considered racist.  So, “increasingly at major competitions, there must be a pre-debate debate on the terms of engagement: whether students are required to cite proof or are free to argue wholly from their feelings and so-called lived experience. Far from being banned or even maligned by debate judges, such antics increasingly win converts and, not coincidentally, matches.”  And there is no requirement that your “lived experience” bears any resemblance to the real world.  “Students are pointedly discouraged from rebutting feelings that don’t jibe with verifiable reality.”  (more here)

Many moons ago I was preparing for my first “real” date. I went down to the DVM the day I turned 16, got my drivers license, borrowed a car from my sister’s girlfriend, and got busy scrubbing the dirt off my shoes. As I was shaving the peach fuzz off my face, my father opened the bathroom door and said, “Don’t talk about politics, sports, or religion.”

The latest “suicide” of a Clinton critic. I think a doctor would have the intelligence and better way doing it.
(December 2017) Dr. Dean Lorich, an orthopedic surgeon who volunteered in Haiti and exposed Clinton Foundation corruption and malpractice on the island, has been found dead in New York. He was 54. Dr. Lorich was found by his 11-year-old daughter on the bathroom floor of his tony Upper East Side apartment with a knife in his chest at around 1pm on Monday.
The knife missed the surgeon’s heart, leaving him to bleed out and be found by his daughter. Despite the fact police were called to the property regarding an “assault“, they instantly registered the death as “suicide” and closed the case…

Re: America’s Left either does not understand the use of force by nations,
“Without a formidable military feared by our enemies, diplomacy sings castrato.”—-Dr. Rebane
I am not convinced in the slightest the Left wants the US to be a superpower, not to mention the biggest superpower of the top 3. Just a nation amount nations, enough to keep the Rooskies at bay in conjunction with our allies, but not much more. Make love, not war.
In 20 years, China’s military might will surpass the US’s. If that don’t get your hair standing up on the back of your neck, few things will.
China for decades was not a real threat militarily because most all of their buildups and weapon procurements were for defensive purposes. Defensive weapons, anti-aircraft systems, big artillery guns on their coastline, and even their Naval buildup was geared to defending the Mainland with the appropriate class of ships.
That was then. Today, their military buildup (and might) is designed for offense expansion. China, without much resistance, or without the US as the big superpower, could own the shipping lanes that the lion’s share of the world’s trade passes, cutting the US off While this is going on, the US now is turning more of it’s attention to protecting the Homeland. Once ridiculed as “Star Wars”, an idea put forward by the “stupid”” Ronald Reagan, North Korea has put Star Wars back in play as a necessary defense against incoming nuclear warheads. While the US has historically enjoyed the protection of two vast oceans on either side as a natural barrier to invasion, the comfort of ocean barriers is becoming less secure. Chinese naval fleets are growing bigger and getting closer as they snatch up spheres of influence further and further from their Mainland, aka, Red China.
Back to Dr. Rebane’s quote above. The word ‘fear’ jumped out. A most apt word. As small example.
    http://www.oann.com/trump-threat-to-pakistan-exemplifies-a-no-fear-foreign-policy/
Fear is not a bad word. Our enemies understand fear, nay, respect fear. Without military migh and political will, we are but Chamberlons. The policy of appeasement has historically failed. We need a Superpower military to match not one, but two other superpowers, as well as numerous small actors around the globe when they start saber rattling and threatening our friends and allies…and our Homeland.

The same polls say it’s likely the Dems will win back the House and Senate
“Pluralities of voters expect Democrats, who have a significant lead on the congressional generic ballot, to win control of both the House and Senate in the midterm elections.”
Then if Trump is not indicted thye Dems will be in a good position for impeachment for obstruction of justice.

Paul… Trump can’t be indicted. A literal impossibility, until he leaves office. I would think a community FM station News Director in the eighth decade of life in the USA would have figured that one out.
If the House becomes majority Dem in Jan 2019, the House could impeach him, referring the case to the Senate where they’d need two-thirds of the Senators choosing to remove him from office.
    Good luck with that.

So that we all don’t forget, impeachment by the House is the way Congress indicts. The Senate is the body that tries those impeached (indicted) by the House. And you can bet the ranch that if Pelosi ever becomes Speaker again, Trump will be impeached. Call your neighborhood bookie and place your bets.

    Trump, what a racist pig
“President Donald Trump slammed the idea of restoring protections for immigrants from “shithole” countries in an Oval Office meeting on Thursday, sources told multiple news outlets. ”
“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” the president reportedly asked lawmakers. He was referring to African nations and Haiti, according to The Washington Post, the first to report the story. It was later confirmed by NBC News, BuzzFeed and CNN.
Trump then said the U.S. “should have more people from places like Norway,” sources told NBC News.

George, were the House to land in Pelosi’s lap with a bare majority, she would be in the position recent GOP Speakers have been in trying to get rid of Obamacare… it’s hard to govern with less than a firm majority in both houses of Congress, with “govern” in this case meaning “overturn the last Presidential election”.
To paraphrase a 20th century pol, to impeach Trump and remove him from office would probably take literally finding him in bed in flagrante delicto with a dead girl or a live Putin.

Gregory 307pm – I said nothing about “remove him from office”; that is an entirely different kettle of fish. But I do believe that even with a bare majority the Dems will impeach The Donald just to satisfy the rabid faction of their base, and get the pound of flesh for Dirty Hillary’s loss.
And may I echo the sentiments of Messrs fish and Gregory. Trump called a spade a spade – there are, by any measure, shithole countries. And I am glad that we finally have a president that says what most of us know, and can therefore focus the policy debate on whether the US should be the willing repository of meritless economic escapees from such countries. In this assessment I do not dun the wretched poor folks from those countries trying to better their lives; I would do the same in their situation. But I do protest that America remains the indiscriminating destination for such people (they number in the billions) to welcome them with open arms.

Once impeached by the House, a removal from office by the Senate is generally the expected action if 2/3rds of Senators agree.
I gather it was Ben Franklin who remarked that removal from office in Europe up to that time was generally accomplished by assassination, and maybe they should include a less dramatic procedure for dealing with mistakes. Another great idea from Ben Franklin!

While I would bet real money against that happening at this time (the deep staters would be heard squealing with delight all the way to the NY Times to share the news), it could happen.

Then, sensing that story had run its course, on this very thread somebody threw out (out of the blue) that Trump will be impeached for obstruction of justice. Obstruction of his own Justice Department probably.
Anyway, I did not respond because I could not find the topic under Dr. Rebane’s post. I ain’t no spelling Nazi and be it far from me to play school monitor. 🙂
The point? Point is it’s the cycle. Mueller, impeach, Russian, obstruction, the off and on 25th Amendment…..it’s just the cycle. Get used to it. Plain as the nose on Poppinjay’s face. This happens went one strategy fizzles out and they do not take disappointment graciously, nor sitting down. It’s a slow news day. Time to recycle.
I will concede the Trump is “mentality unfit” story gained more traction than it ever has to date. It will come back in due time. Just takes a couple of tweets. Maybe three in a row.
They get their hopes up so very high and jump from one narrative to another to keep their spirits up. The goal is the same, no matter which path they choose: To overturn the results of the 2016, and that does mean through the ballot box.. Removing Trump via political coup is considerated acceptable because it found in their playbook under the chapter, “By Any Means Necessary.”. And today we see Trump’s smiling mug. Mercy.

Tucker said well Norwegians have the best education and income levels on the planet while Haitians are at their end. His point was economics and why is it wrong to have standards that help America regarding who we let in. Oh my, you are a racist and hate those Brown people. Anyway, Tucker said why are you not going to China and their policies of NO immigration allowed then. Also, Ticker had the economics for Asians versus all other races and they had by far the best percentage of success. Something like five to one over El Salvadorans. Did not sway the “activist” who said don’t bother me with facts. You are a racist dog you white devil.

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

We ain’t talking refugees, we are talking immigrants.
If the Kenyan farmer is illiterate in his native tongue, uneducated, unskilled, and unschooled in the ways of our civilized society…or any quasi civilized society,….and flat broke to boot with no resources…it is reasonable and prudent to ask what skills does he bring to the table? What are the chances he can be self-sufficient here, not to mention contributing to our nation? Kennedy’s “Ask not…..Ask what you can do for your country” speech.
Bring us the best and brightest from the 7 Seas. Bring us the very best from Kenyan.
I remember under the Shan when Iran had a rather largemiddle class. Educated, skilled, urban types. They came over in floods when the Shaw fell, had resources, higher education, and to this day, the Iranian community in…say, Southern Cal and Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive really ever make the newsworthy bad publicity.. They brought something to the table. And not all were rich, but most were industrious and friendly.
Once worked with an Austrian National here on a visa. Called him Yohondo. Anyway, when asking him about Austria, what upset him the most was his fellow countrymen going through secondary education and vocational training, courtesy of the Austrian Government. Then the grads and the best and brightest take their nation’s future and up and hightail it over to the USA, rarely to return. He felt it brain drained his country after all the money Austria spent on the future generation. Hell yes!! That’s what we want! May the brightest make it here.
Pick the best, leave the rest. Has nothing to do with skin color, a lot to do with stretching the safety net beyond capacity (among other considerations). . It’s all about our Nation has a sovereign right to decide who and whom are allowed inside our borders. No foreigner has any right to migrate here. No right. Zero. We are a generous people.
The Hmongs were refugees. Read with the water shortages in the San Joaquin Valley during the drought, the Hmong farmers (they originally hail from hill country) are moving up to above Redding and try their hand at growing marijuana in the mountains…legally.
So,…..where are we going to put Kenyan farmers and their 57 year old wives?
Our immigration policy should be different than our refugee policy…no outsider has a right, any right, to come here without our permission. I don’t care if they are from Venezuela, as long as they bring something to the table…talents, coupled with a love for liberty and America swelling up within their breasts. Sorry their home countries do not believe in liberty and their governments are so damn corrupt beyond imagination, but there are billions of them. Fire Marshall says the room is getting close to capacity, squeeze it down.
