'You get less of what you tax more.'  Alan Greenspan, et al

George Rebane

This morning on CSPAN I watched the House finally pass the long-fought tax reform bill, and send the legislation to President Trump for his signature.  The Republicans are breathing a sigh of relief while the Democrats are still breathing fire.  Actually, listening to the last floor debate cum kabuki dance, it is clear that this legislation has made every Democrat politician into a liar and/or a hypocrite.  The death and destruction that they claim the new tax law will rain down on the middle class, the economy, and all the poor people in wheelchairs is countered by their own leftleaning Tax Policy Center and the Brookings Institute.

Both outfits report that 80-90% of Americans will see tax relief, and about 1% will not.  The rest will stay about the same.  America’s small businesses that create the most jobs will definitely see benefits come their way.  Large corporations will be able to start bringing back already taxed overseas profits.  It’s hard to believe what kind of unproductive uses of cash our old tax code has borne over the years – today Microsoft has 95% or $132B cash sitting overseas, and Apple has a mind-boggling $252B or 94% of its cash off-shore.  The Democrats firmly believe that jobs are created by middle class and poor workers hiring each other, and that when those corporate monies come back to America, they will be spent for wine, women, and song in the biggest party ever for the rich.

Cooler and wiser heads know that about $1.5T of that repatriated cash will be spent for business expansion by people who actually know how to build/expand businesses and create jobs, instead of being taxed and spent (aka pissed away) through countless other non-productive government spending programs and regulatory costs.  Everyone who has taken Econ 101 knows that our only hope for keeping the country from going down the fiscal drain is growth and more growth.  And history shows that growth benefits from tax relief, and in capitalist America growth has even occurred in spite of taxes, but never because of higher taxes.

In the meantime, starting with Pelosi and Schumer, the Left has successfully sold the new tax law as a “tax scam” to their lamestream media lackeys who have dutifully repeated and reported the same to the public at large.  The bottom line here is that fake news is very much alive and it works.  People who haven’t a clue about what the bill contains believe it to be bad for them.  According to Pelosi, 86M US families will see their taxes increase, and 83% of the benefits will go to the notorious ‘1%’.  The bald fact is that over 47% of households pay no federal taxes at all, and this bill does nothing to reduce that fraction.

As a measure of how effective fake news is, we read from the latest WSJ/NBC News poll, 37% Americans believe our middle class will now pay more taxes, compared with 16% who believe they will pay less (the rest answered ‘don’t know’ or ‘about the same’).  About one third believe that they and their family will pay more tax, compared to one out of six who believe they’ll pay less.  And 56% believe wealthy Americans will pay less tax, to 6% who believe they will pay more.  You can’t make this stuff up; it proves that the nation’s dumbth is manufactured fresh and anew every day when the sun rises.

The Republicans have one hell of a job ahead of them next year to get the message out on their tax reform law; the only wind at their backs will be what the people can actually see in their paychecks and their reduced tax bill (if they pay attention).  And they better see a whole bunch of economic growth before they go to the polls next November.

Stay tuned for the presidential siggy.

[22dec17 update]  Well, the new tax reform act is signed and on the books.  The president did a “not fancy, rush job” signing the bill in the Oval Office with little fanfare, because there was enough of that yesterday.  It was a class act.  The Democrats are panicked out of their minds, hustling around the country telling anyone who would listen that their taxes were just raised, only the rich will benefit, and the economy will plummet taking jobs with it.  This is not exactly the way our trading partners see things.  From all over the world they are publishing sober assessments and informing their citizens that they will now have to travel on a rocky economic road because the American Eagle has had its ties loosened and will now soar again, higher than ever over the competitive world of international commerce.  Joseph Sternberg in ‘US Tax Reform has Europe Worried’ does an excellent job summarizing what the real impact of the new tax law will be.

But not to worry.  That rocky road can be avoided if EU’s economic giants also lower their corporate taxes to launch an economic boom that will lift the fortunes of all enlightened participants.  And here’s the problem for the socialists on both sides of the Pond – they have all been selling a zero-sum narrative preaching that high taxes don’t influence corporate behavior, and more taxing and regulations are the real pillars of thriving economies and a happy social order.  Reality gives lie to both of these ludicrous propositions.  In the US, our socialists again have nothing to fall back on save the dreadful state of their constituents’ (especially the minorities) ability to comprehend, which has been achieved through their more than half-century control of our public education institutions.  The demagogury of dumbth will reach new pinnacles in 2018; for the Democrats it simply has to, or Chuckie and Nancy will be sent home in tightly zipped political bodybags.

Some of us (moi) are not as evolved as our enlightened friends on the Left who live every breath they take on the allustric plane.
I personally have no idea if Trump rallied the troops on the Tax Reform bill by promising to stick it to Da Man, aka, the evil connected greedy heartless rich. Blood money stains their money grubbing little hands.
All I heard is I would be paying less, less, less. Heck, I don’t even care about paying less, just as long as I don’t have to pay more, more, more. A self seeking brut such as moi only heard that folks will be paying less.

Trump is taking the first steps in eliminating unfairness. We all should pay the same rates, IMHO, just to make it fair. But, alas, it was not to be….this time. Hope burns eternal.
Once heard a guy (who I was not particularly fond of) say something that stuck, proving one (moi) can learn something from everyone any person. He said if you want to know how to make a million dollars, don’t t ask a guy who only makes a half million.
Ah, the rich in business are the successful ones, the leaders of industry, the risk takers, the movers and shakers, the embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit, the poster boys for dreaming the American Dream, the free birds who soar with the eagles, our heros that give us all hope so we too can pursue our dreams and make them come to fruitation.
Thus, I often close my eyes, click my heels together, and say three times, “Tax cuts for the rich, tax cuts for the rich, tax cuts for the rich” and fall into peaceful slumber, dreaming dreams of sugar plums and candy canes. Bliss.

Tax rates for the poor! Let them have some skin in the game and join the party. No manchild left behind. No metrosexual in Mommie’s basement left behind. Make them pay something besides sales tax on prepared food. We are all in this together. Together we can. Yes we can, yes we can. Nobody rides for free.
Now kiddies, sent those cards with pennies and nickels included from the lemonade stand to Uncle Sammy and Friends.
As Shotgun Joe Biden said, it’s your Patriotic duty to pay taxes. But, then again, records showed he donated less than 200 bucks to charity when he uttered those rousing statements. And with Biden’s salary, benefits, and retirement package, stuff….oh my. The shame made him change his hardened heart and the following year he donated a couple of thousand to charity…..every drop counts. It just take one grain of rice to tip the scales. Keep those checks coming in, kiddies. It takes a village to feed Big Bro.

Ali did say, “I am so mean I make medicine sick.” That was a lie! I found The Greatest to be shy, bashful, and playful. Rather childlike, not childish. And medicine did not become sick. Ali lied! Hang his rotting corpse on the Tree of Woe. Then throw a lien on his estate and Family Trust. Make him pay.

Lying or dissembling have been a part of public life and leaders since time immemorial. Trump has done no more and a lot less of it than many of his most notable predecessors. It’s part of the game and should be evaluated on the basis of its intended harm to the public weal. Otherwise, arguing the justification of political lying is a moot enterprise.
Today, the leftwing lamestream media led by their political betters has fomented an enormous inventory of lies that every opinion poll reveals. It is much simpler to judge the media about their ongoing, extended, and one-sided lying and manufacture of fake news (e.g. repeating the preposterous statistics spewed by Chuckie and Nancy). The media, at least, have a published code of professional ethics which, for all to see, they have allowed to lapse ages ago.

Obama’s lies about plans and doctors enslaved 1/6 of the American economy and gave over every Americans physical body to a government bureaucrat. I would suggest the tax reform plan just passed is nothing compared to the lies O and company told to get their way. Don’t recall the Paul Emery drumbeat on that, does anyone?

“So George do you admit that Trump lied to sway public opinion on his tax cuts”
Well, judging by the Holy Grail of polls, looks like Trump failed miserably to sway public opinion. Polls show the tax cuts are berry, berry, berry unpopular. Don’t see how lying did any good. Not only that, but Trump did such a piss poor job of persuasion that not one single Democrat voted for the bill. Guess they saw through his dastardly scheme to enrich his personal fortune. Oddly, only the R’s fell for Trump’s devious outrageous lies to stick it to Da Man and all got on board to poke Moneybags McScrooge in the eye. Go figure. I thought we would see that one coming, but nooooo.
So, tell me again how Trump swayed public opinion on anything. Trump will be gone by the first of the year anyway. Just watch, wait, and hold your breath. Hold that breath a wee bit longer. Good. It makes you bluer than the Left Coast. Perfect.

Steven Moore on the highly denounced and ridiculed, yet mind boggling successful Laffer Curve
“One profound disappointment is that no modern Democrat seems to understand the Laffer Curve or the effects of incentives on economic behavior. That wasn’t always the case. John F. Kennedy believed in the power of lower tax rates and called for 30 percent tax cuts. When Jerry Brown, now governor of California, ran for the Democratic nomination for president, he ran on the idea of a 16 percent flat tax. Who devised it? Arthur Laffer. Now leading Democrats, such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, want to raise tax rates, not lower them.

But for now at least, it is once again the Laffer theories that are triumphant and being put to the test. If these policies work anywhere near as well for Trump as they did for Ronald Reagan, the American economy is in for one helluva ride in 2018 and beyond.”

BillT 1012pm – Good pick-up Mr Tozer. Yes, the Laffer Curve has been part and parcel of Rebane Doctrine since I heard Dr Laffer give a talk on it decades ago. But one of the litmus tests for progressive stupidity (it is NOT ignorance) is their unalterable refusal to believe that tax policy impacts economic behavior, and that the more you tax it, the less of it is available for consumption. As they have argued, even in these pages, tax rates don’t affect economic behavior – most specifically in how people deal with monetary risk.
