[Hillary's book – What Happened? – published today. We're going on a short jaunt to a reunion of my old Army outfit, where we again renew ties with all those young lieutenants and captains, and our young pretty and perky wives with their infant fledglings in perambulators, all of whom now look pretty much like we do – tempest fugit. On the trip Jo Ann will be reading and reporting on the travails of Hillary who today told the Dems the bad news, "I'm not going anywhere." And one loud and clear message to her discerning readers (aka Democrats in high places) from between the lines of her book is, 'Don't assume that you know everything that I know about you all.' gjr]

Walt at 9:14 – Ha! It was in the 70s today. Maybe a little rain for the next 3 days and then temps in the 60s. There was a bit of snow just to the north of us reported the other day. They are warning of another winter like last winter coming up. There was so much snow, the older barns and some buildings caved in. The records were still set back in the late 1800s before AGM had been invented. We’ll see.
I’m wondering how many of you folks in CA are going for the non-sex option on your DL.
Might as well just do away with that info at DMV if you can just make up whatever you want. The younger kids should demand to get their BD changed as well. Everyone can ‘feel’ that they are 21, right? What right do the doctors have to ‘assign’ a birth date based on the calendar?

Rocking with Bernie on bankrupting the nation tonight.
https://youtu.be/1okS-KNYgmA
That was then, this is now. From the Chicago Tribune.
“It’s not clear that we as a country can afford Medicare as it currently exists. Merely preserving it without significant cuts would eventually require a tax increase that working people would resent. But instead of looking for ways to economize, the Vermont senator wants to expand the program in a way that the term “vast” barely begins to capture.
[Sanders’] majestic vision goes beyond merely including the entire U.S. population in Medicare — which would increase the number of recipients by sixfold in just four years. Sanders wants to add coverage for dental, vision and hearing needs, which the program now excludes. And he promises “no more co-pays, no more deductibles and no more fighting with insurance companies when they fail to pay for charges.”
He’s talking about a huge change. As a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation noted, “Medicare has relatively high cost-sharing requirements for covered benefits and, unlike typical large employer plans, traditional Medicare does not limit beneficiaries’ annual out-of-pocket spending.” In 2010, it found, the average recipient paid $2,746 for deductibles, coinsurance and the like (not counting premiums).
The Tribune column is correct. Even an expansion of Medicare for all Americans would bankrupt the country. Sanders’ plan goes much further”

We’re already bankrupt. Paul Krugman used to tell us not to worry about the debt because it was below our annual GDP. Now the that debt has gone above our GDP, he’s singing a different tune. ‘Don’t worry, because we have low interest rates.’ The debt will just grow but how do we engineer low interest rates forever?
Our projected growth of GDP is falling and health costs and un-funded retirement costs (pensions, SS, medicare, etc) are rising. The only reason this charade can continue is because no one wants to admit we can’t stop the train to fix the brakes because we can’t stop the train. The geniuses at the wheel insist the track ahead will be straight forever – no curves in sight.
At some point we’ll be forced into a totally digital economy and the govt can inflate at will without that burdensome problem of how to print enough cash to keep up.
Folks on a guaranteed income won’t care about any of it since they produce nothing and obviously can’t be taxed. I shudder to think of how the govt will then coerce anyone left with the ability to produce things of value to continue their labor in return for nothing more than what those that produce nothing get. Stalin? Mao?
Enjoy what we have, cause this won’t last. Ask the Venezuelans.

Regardless of which side of the fence you are on drug prices are getting out of control. 10% of heath care costs go to drugs. Medicare cannot negotiate drug prices. Medicare has spent billions on Hep C drugs.
If Trump was any good at making deals he would do well to fix how Medicare purchases drugs.
Don’t know if Bernie is right about private insurance management costs but if 20% of health care costs are going to management fees at private insurers it makes Medicare’s 2% fees look like a good value.

Scenery at 8:21 – Total nonsense. Medicare can claim it has low overhead because it dumps the costs of collecting its income onto the employers, and the cost of a lot of the admin of its expenses on the health care providers. Private health care insurers are like all insurers – they have investments that earn money. Those investments need investment managers and that is factored in with all of the admin costs. The private health care insurers pay taxes on income plus their employees. A govt operated system generates nothing on investments and pays no taxes at all.
As far as cutting drug costs – good luck with that. Leftists have absolutely no idea what it costs to develop and bring a drug to market. Not to mention the costs of developing drugs that end up not working or having ruinous side effects. Those drugs bring in no money at all. Do some companies gouge? Yes, but the effect overall on the total of drug prices is minimal.
Modern health care is extremely expensive any way you look at it. Costs can be cut drastically but the general public won’t tolerate it. The left wants to solve the problem as it always does. Make ‘the rich’ pay for it. They don’t have the money and neither does the govt. I notice all the leftist that want free European style health care don’t seem to want to move to Europe.
We can cut costs and we can have health care for everyone, but you will have a hard time finding the folks to actually work for it and put up with the necessary changes to implement those lowered costs.

Uh….Scenery…..if you are employed you are paying Medicare taxes….since there are more people paying for Medicare than are currently collecting it this has the effect of shifting administrative costs for premium collection onto “others”.

All insurance is the same. Many people pay premiums and some receive benefits when they need them.
Antitaxers won’t like this…
Your monthly Medicare Part B premium will be higher if your income is above a certain amount. You’ll pay more for Part B if the income you reported on your IRS tax return two years ago was above $85,000 per year ($170,000 for couples).

Your claim was about administrative costs not drawing benefits vs contributing to the pool.
Private insurance companies don’t get to outsource their premium collection to third parties. The cost effort to administer medicare at the employer level is born by the employer…..not Uncle Stupid……Medicare gets to look more efficient by shoving work onto others.

Anthem Agents 1 and 2, So much absurdity, but let’s just take this one – ‘The IRS collects the taxes that fund the program’… and the banks and collection agencies (and let us not forget employers who transfer the money directly to health insurance companies) responsible for transferring payments to insurance companies/doctors/hospitals aren’t included in ‘overhead’ either.
It is just utterly uninformed to think that Medicare is funded through a process which is any different than that through which a typical company pays its employee health insurance premiums – it is all just handled by payroll software for any company of normal size. And it is simply wrong to say that when a company uses a service like that provided by a company like PCS to pay disability insurance, workmen’s comp, IRA/401K plans, or even something like employee health insurance premiums, this is in any way, shape, or form different than FICA taxes being handled in exactly the same way.

What the government has implemented in effect is healthcare welfare.
And the money that companies collect for the government they aren’t collecting for their employees, they’re collecting for recipients who almost certainly have no connection whatsoever with the business in question. Regardless of how you minimize it there are costs involved with the accounting, collecting, and transmission of the money sent from these businesses to the government.
That’s how Medicare makes their cost structure look so low relative to private insurers.

Never ceases to amaze me that the lefties who constantly go on and on about how bad the old monopolies were and how wonderful it was that the govt broke them up turn around and clamor for health care to be a govt monopoly.
Oh sure – you can always go out and buy some private insurance of your own, but…
ahem, first – you have to pay to support the govt ‘single payer’. It’s not optional.
Just like govt schools. You have to pay for it like it or not – but if you have the money you can opt out for a private school. The poor are stuck with govt crap. How about vouchers? Then you get to vote for the best schools for your kids. Ah, but the schlubs won’t vote correctly.

What about the ‘end of snow’ Mr Cross? Or have you inconveniently forgotten that bit of ‘settled science’?
What about ‘more frequent and more severe hurricanes’? That was followed by the reality of the quietest period of hurricane activity ever in the ‘recorded’ history of the US.
