[Well, that last sandbox sure got smelly in the end.  My bad for letting it linger.  Perhaps we can try to raise the level of discourse on this one.  Would love to see some dialogue on 'Trump divorces GOP Congress' and its implications for legislation and 2018. gjr]

    In the news:
North Korea has fired a ballistic missile that passed over Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters early Tuesday.
A South Korean military official told NBC News that the projectile was fired around 5:57 a.m. local time on Tuesday. U.S. Pacific Command projected that the missile will splash down at 6:29 a.m. local time.
Mot a word from the fearless Trump on this one.

    Trump: Compared to What?
    Victor Davis Hanson
Tu quoque is a classical Latin term for โ€œyou too.โ€
It is sometimes considered a logical fallacy: you do not defend your position, but instead point to someone elseโ€™s that is worseโ€”in the fashion of a guilty child seeking to avoid parental discipline by claiming his unpunished brother โ€œdid it worse.โ€
But in truth tu quoque is a legitimate argumentโ€”if one both defends his position and also points out the hypocrisy of his inconsistent accuser.
    Take Trump.
Over the last two weeks, Trump, the messenger, may have tweeted a few silly things (the recycled John J. Pershing pig-fat bullet tweet) and was considered slow in appreciating the political atmospherics of the rioting and violence in Virginia and North Carolina.
Are his supporters therefore supposed to abandon Trump as the hysterical media demands? Hardly. Here are six reasons why not.

Trump-no business communications with Russia??? Sure
Trump Organization lawyer Michael Cohen acknowledged Monday that he reached out last year during the presidential campaign to a spokesman for Vladimir Putin for help on a proposal to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, but said he never heard back and the project never got off the ground.
The proposed Moscow project, Cohen told the House Intelligence Committee in a statement, was โ€œunder considerationโ€ by President Donald Trumpโ€™s company between September 2015 and the end of January 2016, when Cohen โ€œdetermined that the proposal was not feasible for a variety of business reasons and should not be pursued further.โ€

Hay Paul. So Trump had some business dealing in Russia. That’s not a crime.
I know of a (ha) non profit here that has dealings with China. That REALLY needs to be investigated. I’m sure something criminal can be found in that.

Walt, Trump categorically denied he had any business dealings with Russia except for the Miss Universe contest and one house sale. Would you call that lying?
    Trump quote:
โ€œI have had dealings over the years where I sold a house to a very wealthy Russian many years ago. I had the Miss Universe pageantโ€Šโ€”โ€Šwhich I owned for quite a whileโ€Šโ€”โ€ŠI had it in Moscow a long time ago. But other than that, I have nothing to do with Russia,โ€ Trump said.

Speaking of the business at hand, this has been around for a few days and with today’s media doing what they have become, I just don’t see this story having legs.
With that said, one line raised my eyebrows:
“At the time, Ukraine was run by a pro-Russian political party that had paid Manafort $17 million for consulting in 2013 and 2014,โ€ NBC News added.
And these lines raised my eyebrows as well:
“Politicoโ€™s report, published January 11, 2017, alleged that Democratic officials worked with Ukraine to boost Clinton and harm Trump:
Ukrainian government officials tried to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump by publicly questioning his fitness for office. They also disseminated documents implicating a top Trump aide in corruption and suggested they were investigating the matter, only to back away after the election. And they helped Clintonโ€™s allies research damaging information on Trump and his advisers.
The media has largely ignored any claims suggesting that the Democrats and Hillary Clinton may have received help from a foreign government during the 2016 presidential election.”
    More eyebrow raising.
“Back in April, the powerful Washington lobbying firm run by Clinton ally Tony Podesta filed a document admitting its work for the pro-Russia European Centre for a Modern Ukraine may have principally benefited a foreign government. New disclosures revealed dozens of previously unreported interactions the firm made with influential government offices, including Hillary Clintonโ€™s State Department and the office of former Vice President Joe Biden, while lobbying on behalf of the center. The Podesta Group belatedly filed several new disclosures with the Justice Department on Aug. 17 related to work the firm completed between 2012 and 2014 on behalf of a pro-Russia Ukrainian think tank.”
Why does that adjective “pro-Russian” keep coming up?? Ah, maybe it was a typo.

Paul at 3:12 – “Trump Organization lawyer Michael Cohen acknowledged Monday that he reached out last year during the presidential campaign to a spokesman for Vladimir Putin for help on a proposal to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, but said he never heard back and the project never got off the ground.”
What part of ‘never heard back’ and ‘the project never got off the ground’ is hard to understand?
No contract, no money changed hands, no communication, no construction, no nothing.
So – ‘no business dealings’ is perfectly true.
And Podesta now has his ass in a sling as he has to ‘amend’ (that is fess up to his previous misstatements) about his ties to Putin.
But Paul needs his daily fix, so if the word Russia appears in the same line as Trump, that’s proof enough that Trump is in cahoots with Putin.

    Walt @ 4:15 pm.
Concerning Mayor Lee: it’s a right to peaceably assemble. Let’s not forget the word peaceably. Congress can’t touch it

[1] The First Amendment states that โ€œCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.โ€.

States can’t touch the right to peaceably assemble, but a Mayor can. First, seems to me the few gathered in to advocate for free speech were denied police protection for their protected right to peaceably assemble.. The only thing they were carrying were water bottles, which got confiscated. But, when the other side showed up, they had no rights or protections because they did not intend to assemble peaceably and did not have a permit. Pulling the cops violated the guareented right and protections to peacefully assemble.
Read the last paragraph to find the loophole. It doesn’t say exactly who creates the danger of riot and destruction, just lumps it all together as the assembly I guess. Sure, we know it was those outside of the peaceably assembled who are to blame on this one. Mayor Lee must be tickled pink with herself.
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the United States Congress from enacting legislation that would abridge the right of the people to assemble peaceably.[1] The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution makes this prohibition applicable to state governments.[2]
The Supreme Court of the United States has held that the First Amendment protects the right to conduct a peaceful public assembly.[3] The right to assemble is not, however, absolute. Government officials cannot simply prohibit a public assembly in their own discretion,[4] but the government can impose restrictions on the time, place, and manner of peaceful assembly, provided that constitutional safeguards are met.[5] Time, place, and manner restrictions are permissible so long as they โ€œare justified without reference to the content of the regulated speech, . . . are narrowly tailored to serve a significant governmental interest, and . . . leave open ample alternative channels for communication of the information.โ€[6]
Such time, place, and manner restrictions can take the form of requirements to obtain a permit for an assembly.[7] The Supreme Court has held that it is constitutionally permissible for the government to require that a permit for an assembly be obtained in advance.[8] The government can also make special regulations that impose additional requirements for assemblies that take place near major public events.[9]
In the United States, the organizer of a public assembly must typically apply for and obtain a permit in advance from the local police department or other local governmental body.[10] Applications for permits usually require, at a minimum, information about the specific date, time, and location of the proposed assembly, and may require a great deal more information.[11] Localities can, within the boundaries established by Supreme Court decisions interpreting the First Amendment right to assemble peaceably, impose additional requirements for permit applications, such as information about the organizer of the assembly and specific details about how the assembly is to be conducted.[12]
The First Amendment does not provide the right to conduct an assembly at which there is a clear and present danger of riot, disorder, or interference with traffic on public streets, or other immediate threat to public safety or order.[13] Statutes that prohibit people from assembling and using force or violence to accomplish unlawful purposes are permissible under the First Amendment.[14]

Scott…you and all those like you are solid, intelligent middle of the road Americans. That is what America is all about! That’s why all those in government are required to swear an oath of office to uphold it! Without upholding our basic law we have anarchy and violent people breaking the laws and changing the laws to empower their corrupt totalitarian mentality. Very simple. Take the time to study our Constitution and Bill of Rights and then insist those we pay (with our taxes) uphold their oath. It really works peacefully and is powerful truth we used during our lifetime when confronting ignorant individuals in our justice system.

It’s a crying shame when people make bonehead mistakes. A person nowadays that blows a .22 can’t work at a bank, among other places. To add to the woes, many employers have to let the bonehead go because their business insurance policies won’t cover them, even if they are at the front counter or warehouse and don’t drive. Having a few minor dings on one’s driving record is not a deal breaker, but a big ding like DUI is. Yes, things have changed. Wonder if the county will cover her if she needs a company car for business. Oh, the dumb mistakes people do. Some are unfortunate enough to be held to a higher standard than the white trashing in GV. :).
.22 takes it to a whole higher level than a.10.

    PS: to clarify my 10:11am.
Not really trying to score political points, but pointing out how costly a severe lapse of judgement can be. I expect the courts to be kind to her, get some money out of her of course, not much Tim e, maybe one weekend in jail starting late Friday night and released early Sat. Or Sun am, or no time at all. Rertricted license and all that stuff.
But, after the verdict, the DMV has a whole list of pain in store. Suspended license maybe, more fines, etc, no matter what the County handed out. The DMV is the law, then the auto insurance goes up for three years. People say it can cost up to 9k nowadays, and that is without getting a lawyer, which usually is more money down the rat hole. She would have to prove she can drive just fine with a .22. That is quite expensive I dunno. She never made it out of the parking lot without hitting something. Thank goodness a child in the park wasn’t struck. That .22 is higher than I ever got back in the day and I was a full blown drunk. That .22 really sticks with me for some odd reason. Live and learn….especially when you get a nudge from the judge to point you towards the light.
A suspended (or restricted) license, no matter if it’s just for 10 days to a month, makes going to the grocery store and other shopping a real pain. There’s always the Gold Country Stage. Let’s you off at the steps where the Supervisors meet. Always a silver lining.

Orange County Register: The 23-campus California State University system knows it must somehow speed up graduation beyond todayโ€™s pace, which sees just 19 percent of entering freshmen graduate within four years. The low rate is at least partly because more than a third of frosh need some remedial work.

The Mayor is trying to get some legitimacy coming their way. Gang sounds more acceptable than the current classification.
