[This is the addended transcript of my regular KVMR commentary broadcast on 16 August 2017.]

The Charlottesville clash is metastasizing across the country.  In these look-alike demonstrations, the Civil War and all that it entails has become the latest collision point of several ideological and political agendas.  For those able to handle historical nuances, our Civil War was not a civil war, but a War for Southern Independence, or more neutrally, the War Between the States.  In a real civil war, each side wants to wind up in control of the entire country.  But since time is short, weโ€™ll call it a โ€˜Civil Warโ€™ in the sequel.

That in 1865 the South, among its other objectives, wanted to perpetuate slavery is today enough to charge anyone, who wants to retain reminders of that bloody conflict, with a long list of additional social sins.  For example, to defend the continued acceptance of statuary, paintings, plaques, and other symbols that memorialize that conflict in the South, is to be cast as a white supremacist who longs for the day when the blacks can again be enslaved.  And the promotion of American nationalism immediately equates with the hidden objectives of white nationalism โ€“ in short, such people are identified simply as rank racists.

So, to assure that these symbols of social injustice will disappear from our land, our politically correct factions outdo each other to demand removal of all such blatant displays of our despicable past.  Hence, we see statues of Confederate leaders and soldiers being toppled, and hear new cries to take down Civil War paintings in state houses and heroic facades from their exteriors.  And in the exercise of exquisite chutzpah, the Council on American-Islamic Relations joins in the demand that every Confederate memorial in the US be torn down.

The reasonable underpinnings for these progressive and alt-left sentiments are hard to understand.  Where do we stop destroying and removing symbols of past ages that conflict with our revised and ever-changing cultural tenets; where do we stop blotting out reminders of the inconvenient eras that really happened; and with warts and all, that are still a part of our history?

Do we follow the presumably sincere and heartfelt sentiments of ISIS and the Taliban who vandalize and destroy historical artifacts they consider hateful and even blasphemous to their God?  According to the tenets of their culture, such monuments and artifacts are an affront to the very foundation of our universe.  What about removing all evidence of the Roman Empire, a regime that conquered, ravaged, and enslaved so much of the world?  And was it not the Arabs in the first millennium who opened up the African slave trade along that continentโ€™s east coast; do we also tear down the symbols of Arabic faith and glory?  And then throw in the Judeo-Christian scriptures and manifold artifacts abetting slavery.  To complete the job here in our foothills, hydraulic monitors were used in the Sierra to wash away entire mountain sides, polluting rivers and spoiling the livelihood of farmers in the valley below, all in the fevered search for gold.  Should we also remove these proudly-displayed symbols of exploitation and destruction erected in gold country towns that now memorialize that history?

However, on deeper reflection, todayโ€™s attacks on the historical Confederacy can also be seen as the next opportune and expedient battle in the ongoing war on America and western culture.  In this war, the white supremacists and neo-Nazis are the conveniently useful idiots who unwittingly aid the assault on the west when they extol the virtues of the Confederacy, and by implication slavery.  Were that their aim, these public demonstrations are an extremely destructive attempt to promote and sustain western culture.

But the whole affair reveals the real agenda now playing out in America, to equate white nationalism with western culture in the minds of the lightly informed, as our Left continues to forge a path to autocratic globalism.  The globalist elites know that as long as a significant number of the earthโ€™s people cling to tenets of western culture, there is little hope of convincing countries to forsake their sovereignty, and replace it with one overarching world government.

My name is Rebane, and I also expand on this and related themes on Rebaneโ€™s Ruminations where the addended transcript of this commentary is posted with relevant links, and where such issues are debated extensively.  However, my views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.  Thank you for listening.

Addendum โ€“ It is again interesting but not surprising to note that the Left is finally beginning to understand the deep schism that rends our country.  The formerly denied Great Divide, and one that may arrive violently, is even now coming up on their usually dimly lit and perennially askew radar.  Charlottesville may then be remembered as our Fort Sumter redux.  Most of us hope that there will be a better resolution.

(Itโ€™s also interesting to see how the Left deports itself when they come in conflict with the feds on their deeply held beliefs โ€“ they just say no.  Iโ€™ve promoted that same policy with our Board of Supervisors regarding the county kowtowing to regulations from above that stifle our growth and local economy.  Smarter heads have explained to me how that is impossible to do (at least for a right-leaning BoS).  Well, now we have examples all over the place, and like I predicted, it all started with one sanctuary city and then went viral.  Weโ€™ll see how it all plays out with AG Sessions at DoJ helm.)

Since the preservation of western culture is prominently featured in my aired commentary, we should start by defining what it is.  Turns out that Wikipedia has a very useful definition with which I, in the main, agree.

โ€œWestern culture, sometimes equated with Western civilization, Occidental culture, the Western world, Western society, European civilization, or Judeo-Greco-Christian civilization, is a term used very broadly to refer to a heritage of social normsethical valuestraditional customsbelief systemspolitical systems and specific artifacts and technologies that have some origin or association with Europe. The term also applies beyond Europe, to countries and cultures whose histories are strongly connected to Europe by immigration, colonization, or influence. For example, Western Culture includes countries in the Americas and Australasia, whose language and demographic ethnicity (and) majorities are currently European.

Western culture is characterized by a host of artistic, philosophic, literary and legal themes and traditions; the heritage of GreekRomanJewish, Germanic, CelticSlavic and other ethnic and linguistic groups, as well as Middle Eastern Christianity including the Roman Catholic Church, and the Orthodox Church, which played an important part in the shaping of Western civilization since at least the 4th century. The teachings of Jesus, such as the Parable of the Good Samaritan, are among the important sources for modern notions of Human Rights and the welfare measures commonly provided by governments in the West. Before the Cold War era, the traditional Western viewpoint identified Western Civilization with the Western Christian (CatholicProtestant) countries and culture.โ€

With regard to the ongoing demonstrations, there is a clear answer for the Left when asked, โ€˜Is it possible to love free speech and defend a speaker without by necessity having to agree with what the speaker says or believes?โ€™  The answer, save the ACLUโ€™s lone disagreement, is a firm NO!  Today perceived, yet unspoken, thought is proscribed by the Left โ€“ โ€˜But we know what he is really thinking.โ€™  Such selective granting of constitutional rights are among the existential core values of progressives, and not just outlier sentiments held by their fringe.

We are now growing accustomed to mass actions in the public forum that in their aggregate can be understood as a preamble to a true civil war.  The coming conflict may be one in which the victor either defines our new or renewed form of governance, or executes the Great Divide, thereby establishing two sovereign nation-states in the wake of such a conflict.

The leftwing lamestream media is working overtime to cast current events as confirmation that our federal government is run by radical ideologues who promote white nationalism.  The current press hullabaloo, joined by all Democrats and some Republicans, about President Trumpโ€™s politically incorrect denunciation of Charlottesville demonstrators is a prime example of this.  His ascription of responsibility to both sides in the riot โ€“ the so-called notion of โ€˜moral equivalenceโ€™ – is the lynch pin of their entire argument.

Yet no one in the national media has pointed out that President Obama was equally, if not more so, ambivalent when even more egregious events came to pass.  The hallmark of these was, perhaps, โ€œwhen five Dallas cops were murdered last year, the 44th president faulted police as well as the killer.โ€  In โ€˜Trump Follows Obamaโ€™s Example of Moral Equivalenceโ€™, Jason Riley reluctantly reminds us of this one-sided treatment of the two presidents.  The Leftโ€™s high dudgeon media made nary a peep when on numerous occasions Obama saw two sides of clearly one-sided tragedies.

The Left has no trouble publicly promoting and protecting anti-white groups like Black Lives Matter, and lifting up prominent black racists like Al Sharpton.  All forms of nationalist groups are darlings of the lamestream, except, of course, American nationalists who are vigorously attacked at every opportunity.  This generation of our formerly noble Fourth Estate has a big problem denouncing all forms of race-based supremacy and nationalism.  Their rule for such discrimination is simple โ€“ if it has any provenance in European culture, it is proscribed.

So what is happening now?  Well, the temperature is rising as โ€œDemocrats and media figures work to mainstream violent Antifa protesters. โ€ฆ Journalists and major liberal news outlets have compared violent American flag-burning protesters to soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy โ€” all while downplaying the leftistsโ€™ violence. โ€ฆ The protesters, known as antifa (short for anti-fascist), often advocate for communism and have been deemed a domestic terrorist movementโ€ by at least one state. (more here)

Concurrently, the work to erase parts of our past continues apace.  Look for demonstrations calling for the sandblasting of Georgiaโ€™s Stone Mountain and the radical reduction of Mount Rushmoreโ€™s occupants.  Perhaps the insanity, which usually intensifies in such pre-revolutionary political frenzies, may yet reach to the internet and school texts, and call for the photoshopping (nee Stalinist 'air-brushing') of historical photos and deletion of politically incorrect videos.  This is recognized by the better read as gross historical revisionism and Orwellian newthink.  Today saner voices counsel that in order to inform future generations, we should add to history, and not just take from it.

[17aug17 update]  Among the many intellectual hurdles that face those of the Left, understanding the definition of โ€˜conspiracyโ€™ seems to of particular difficulty for them.  RR has tried to help in the past to clear up their confusion; let us try again.

Conspiracy: an evil, unlawful, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons.  Random House Dictionary of the English Language (unabridged);

Conspiracy: a secret agreement among several people usually involving treason or great treachery.  Mirriam-Webster Dictionary (online);

Conspiracy: an evil, unlawful, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons. Plot. Dictionary.com;

Conspiracy: a secret plan to achieve some goal.  Rationalwiki.com

So what does one learn about โ€˜conspiracyโ€™ if first bothering to consult any dictionary?  A conspiracy is something done by two or more people, always in secret, to achieve a goal or end that may be legal or illegal.  But to those who have never consulted a dictionary, the meaning of the word remains forever a mystery, which causes them to say butt stupid things like, "So letโ€™s remind George when he spreads this conspiracy nonsense on KVMR to promote his blog that when you lay down with Richard Spencer, American Nazis, and the KKK you are who you are intimate with."

RR has never claimed or posited that the Left is conspiring to โ€œfundamentally transform Americaโ€, or to abrogate the Westphalian world order, or to reduce America from its hegemonic status to second world peerage, or to promote global governance.  Not at all.  We have always pointed out how openly the Left has done this, and continues to advance such ends through any and all agents and agencies it controls or can influence.  They have written books and publish this message continually.  To them, worldwide collectivism is a fervent and cherished end.  They freely admit that the worldโ€™s cadre of independent sovereign-nation states stands in the way of this goal, and that this Westphalian world order must be brought down in order for mankind to advance and achieve its destiny.

Now admittedly, the Left no longer loudly proclaims the benefits that derive from the historical nostrums offered by Marx, Engels, Lenin, et al.  However, the mountain they are encouraging people everywhere to climb is the very same.  Today we are ascending on a slightly different and more politic path as required by the times, but as the attacks on capitalism, wealth distribution, merit-based advancement, etc emerge from academe and grow louder, we will soon be encouraged to follow the celebrated icons of socialism cum communism in their very footsteps.

For recent examples of this openness and non-conspiratorial ideological promotion, I call your attention to two interesting developments by our progressives.  First, letโ€™s see what messages the alt-left proudly puts into the public domain today.  A summary with links to their own sites is available in โ€˜In Their Own Words: The Radical Political Goals Of โ€˜Anti-Fascistsโ€™โ€™.  When reading this, recall the recent words of Senator Warren (D-MA) about what part of the political spectrum the core of the Democratic Party now inhabits (here).  To get the full snootful on the Leftโ€™s agenda, I refer you to their Progressive Manifesto (2003) by Anthony Giddens.  You are, of course, invited to compare their manifesto to the goals espoused in the UNโ€™s Agenda 21 document extensively covered in these pages.

And then to follow the immortal words of V. Lenin โ€“ โ€œGive me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.โ€ โ€“ we turn to the recent efforts of Democrat worthies such as Van Jones, former Obama advisor and self-ascribed communist (more here and here), who now is busy inserting a new โ€œanti-bullyingโ€ program into our high schoolsโ€™ curriculum called โ€˜Challenge Dayโ€™ and sits on its openly leftwing board.  Over 2,200 high schools have offered the program in which โ€œno longer are young people taught to find the good in people and society, to be optimistic, to be self-reliant, to be hopeful, and to have good relationships with their families. โ€ฆ Programs like Challenge Day teach students to find divisions constantly: Everyone and everything is racist, poses a direct threat to their safety, or is the product of some form of social privilege. โ€ฆ Instead of teaching resilience, respect, and independence, students are taught to break down and cry, discuss their feelings, and check their social โ€œprivilege.โ€ (more here)

In the end we come full circle and realize that leftwingers who cannot debate the tenets they promote will simply attack and denigrate their opposites as advancing conspiracy theories in the hopes that their audience will react with the usually unexamined dismissal, 'Oh yeah, one of those guys …'

    re: Stalinist air-brushing.
It’s far more common than you might think. There’s a strong tendency anymore for people to do screen captures or reference archives for news stories since the MSM has this new tendency to ‘edit’ them later. It isn’t just ginned up controversies like the Russia story, it’s editing after the fact.
The more insidious variant of unpersoning is running full steam right now, but isn’t so obvious if you don’t keep an eye on those matters. It might make a good editorial. Check out the dropping of people by PayPal, Patreon, banning of Youtube accounts, demonetizing of Youtube accounts, for content which you’d probably find even pretty mundane. In days of yore, it didn’t matter because we weren’t stuck with media and financial monopolies. The real take away isn’t so much that Youtube shouldn’t shutdown an account, but that Google needs some serious anti-trust attention (as do the banks of course).
A prediction. If Trump survives, expect DOJ attention on web monopolies and expect the US Left to support these huge companies.
Those tiny riots are sort of a side-show. It’s game on as the Left smells blood in the water. To tell you the truth, my money is on them.

Sample lyric… “It’s fun to eulogize the people you despise, as long as you don’t let them in your schools”

Well, if we erase the history of the Confederacy, the founding, flourishing, and membership of the KKK, forced segregation, Jim Crow laws, and the waving of Conferate flags at political rallies attended by thousands of white sheeted cone heads, we just erased the history of the Democrat Party. Include the blood thirsty hunter of Redmen, Andrew Jackson, onward. How friggin’ convenient, no? And the Democrat Party take zero responsibility. Sweet.
Let’s just cut to the quick. Removing our nation’s Civil War history is step one, not an end to itself. Maybe clamp down on “hate speech” as a bonus. What, something like 7-9 out of our nation’s first 11-12 presidents owned slaves. Those Presidents are next, but those men are not the goal.
The goal is to delegitimize the founding fathers, the Declaration of Indepence (written by white males influenced by the Judeo-Greco-Christian Western Civilization), and the Constitution of the United States of America, written by the same kind of white men of European descent. Trash the history of such men (mostly quite virtuous yet flawed humans), trash them completely, demonize them, erase their memories from the face of North America, and it’s a bee line straight to ripping up the Constitution. A new order will arise from the ashes…..the ashes are but the residue from the planned and fanned flames of violence on the streets. The breakdown. Once a society loses its civility, it collapses. Multi-pronged attack, yet coordinated. Attack the 1st, 2nd, 4th Amendments to start and their authors. Pit one group against the other or many groups against the other to break down Civil society, erase the past, and all history begins today. A new wonderful One World.

Take a look at Martin Luther King and his commitment to non-violence. Now, take a look at Malcom X. Both prominent historical figures. Which one affected real change and influence? You know the answer. It’s a no-brainer.
I would say Dr. King is next on the list to slammed, demonized, and removed from polite company, but he is already being kicked while dead on the ground by our Social Justice Warriors on campuses across the land…for a few years now. They prefer the way of Malcom X. Malcolm’s path is the roadmap to getting to where they want to take us. There is no place for non-violence. Onward!
As if they need an fake excuse, ‘Did you know Dr. King was against gay marriage??” Remove his name from our sight now! Cleanse this nation of the mention of his name and remove all residue from his life. History begins today.

If you want to call Robert E. Lee a horrible person, a traitor, a defender of slavery, you don’t know history. Rather than belabor the point, here are some highlights….albeit it’ is all a waste of my breath. The 16′ statue of Lenin in Seattle is held in much higher esteem on the Left Coast that Robert E. Lee will ever be. Ever. But, here is just a little bit of history. Nobody is perfect:
    History lesson for the day.
Robert E Lee was married to George Washington’s granddaughter. He worked with Grant during the Mexican-American war and became a decorated war hero defending this country. He believed slavery was a great evil and his wife broke the law by teaching slaves to read and write. After the civil war he worked with Andrew Johnson’s program of reconstruction. He became very popular with the northern states and the Barracks at West Point were named in his honor in 1962. He was a great man who served this country his entire life in some form or other. His memorial is now being called a blight. No American military veteran should be treated as such. People keep yelling, “You can’t change history.” Sadly you can. This is no better than book burnings. ISIS tried rewriting history by destroying historical artifacts. Is that really who we want to emulate?
As they tear down this “blight” keep these few historical facts in your mind. No military veteran and highly decorated war hero should ever be treated as such. This is not Iraq and that is not a statue of Sadam.
IN ADDITION:: Lee was also very torn about the prospect of the South leaving the Union. His wifes grandfather George Washington was a huge influence on him. He believed that ultimately, states rights trumped the federal government and chose to lead the Southern army. His estate, Arlington, near Washington DC was his home and while away fighting the war, the federal government demanded that Lee himself pay his taxes in person. He sent his wife but the money was not accepted from a woman. When he could not pay the taxes, the government began burying dead Union soldiers on his land. The government is still burying people there today. It is now called Arlington National Cemetery. DO THEY WANT TO TEAR THAT UP ALSO ??
History of The War for Southetn Independence, aka, Calexit. Or, if you prefer, add to history:
Robert E. Lee was the most decorated soldier in the U.S. Army. He was a man of unimpeachable integrity. Lincoln offered him command of the Union Army, but Lee refused only because his loyalty was to Virginia. Lee opposed both secession and slavery. And yet to the historically illiterate left, a man who opposed both slavery and secession has come to symbolize both slavery and secession. Instead of truthfully confronting American history, the left-wing media and the Democratic Party are trying to pin the blame for slavery on those who don’t deserve it. To me, thereโ€™s a bigger story here โ€“ the leftโ€™s attempt to blame slavery entirely on the American South. This is a big lie, because of number one, most Southerners did not own slaves, nor did most Confederate soldiers. Number two, the Northern Democrats in the preceding 40 years before the Civil War aggressively protected slavery. And they worked in cahoots with Southern Democrats. The fight over slavery wasnโ€™t between North and South. It was between a pro-slavery Democratic Party and the anti-slavery Republicans. This entire controversy and the larger effort to remove Confederate memorials all over the South is an attempt to cunningly conceal the Democratsโ€™ historic role in protecting slavery as an institution.

I rather like the idea of renaming everything and removing all public art that has anything to do with slavery.
The real question is do we use names that are completely innocuous, Madison Wisconsin can become Centerville Wisconsin.
or do you go with the styles of 2017? Washington State can become ‘Obama’, the capital is now Martin Luther King DC.
It would require a bit of work in generating new letterheads for official mail, but well worth it.
If we are heading into an (likely cyclical) era of increased social and mass violence, and given Assange’s observation:
    https://twitter.com/julianassange/status/896777829580517376
there must be some way to monetize it. Advertisers would switch in droves from the NFL to this new league.

lol. I probably should be more clear on the Assange post. Those are US-backed (Obama-backed) Ukrainian Nazi’s. Although they do look mighty similar to Antifa.
For this to work with TV cameras, there needs to be more clarity on the uniforms and some work done on logos so that there can be more than two teams.

The South Sides bestest…and most consciously verbose…… little “A” student slanders our host again…..

    Steve Frisch says:

    August 17, 2017 at 8:45 am
All one has to do is read our fellow citizens blog at Rebanes Ruminations and Sierra Dragonโ€™s Breath[e] to see the mindset and narrative of intolerance, historical revisionism, and alt-right propaganda that exists in our own community.
For years I have pointed out that these people were outright racists and separatists, who knowingly advanced a narrative that the only solution in America is โ€˜separatismโ€™, ironically the very narrative advanced by Richard Spencer and Andrew Anglin of The Daily Stormer are advancing.
I know that George Rebane would claim that there is some hair splitting difference between โ€œAmerican nationalismโ€ which he is a proponent of, and white separatism, which he claims not to be a proponent of, even as he advocates for the right of people to live in culturally similar enclaves where values are shared, never answering my questions about how in our society of laws governed by a Constitution that values equity this could be achieved. What does one do the first time a liberal, or an immigrant (now even legal immigrants in their minds) or someone who doesnโ€™t share his values seeks to buy a home or start a business in his culturally similar enclave…..

Theres more but it’s Frisch so you’ve seen it before……and before ….and before!

Frisch is so predictable. He is a self-hater and I can certainly see why. But to claim anyone here or on my blog is like Frisch and a hater is absurd. My father fought against the fascists, unlike Frisch who hid under his desk. And yet no matter how many times we, and now Trump say they oppose the violence and the fascists these liars like Frisch persist. But that is the way it is. He has a communist agenda and loves Stalin and Mao and the “Antifa ” thugs. I truly think the left are mentally ill.

Well, Good Heavens. To his credit, Mr. Frisch actually writes something instead of just spraying graffiti on a thread, so I salute him for that.
I’m not sure how a color-blind, merit-based society with enforced borders becomes ‘outright racist’, but perhaps he has some insight that I don’t into everyone’s inner muse.
It’s a bummer to see the ‘racist’ tag used so much, especially from an area where there are so few opportunities to even give it a try, but it’s a useful tool in the ongoing coup d’etat. In the final analysis these are all just words to fire up a constituency. ‘Punch a Nazi’ followed by ‘Everyone I don’t like is a Nazi’.

Of course, Todd can’t cite his military record Paul, as I can’t, because neither of us ever served in the military. Of course, I too have close family members who did, in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, including two extended family members who paid the ultimate price….but his Daddy’s experience is paramount in his little mind.
I want to be very clear–this entire “western heritage” “protect our culture” “war between Christianity and Islam” “anti-globalist anti-elitist” narrative is nothing but code for the alt-right–the goal is is to burn it all down and start over, straight from the mind of people who think like Steve Bannon. The goal is to replace a modern secular western liberal tradition with an authoritarian state that imposes its values on minorities or what it sees as aberrants of every sort–ethnic, religious, gender and ideological.
I am not foolish enough to believe that George doesn’t know exactly what he is doing, and has been doing for years. He is dedicated to sowing division, fear, and insecurity, with the intent of ushering in a more restrictive authoritarian and conservative social order.

Scenes: there is one thing unique about hurling the word “racist” at another. That unique thing is there is no defense. No words to rebut the charge. Guilty, guilty, guilty and guilty. Just the way it be.
Oh, I laugh now when people say “I have a black friend”, or “I work with a black dude”, to prove they are not racists. Like saying as a retort that calling me a racist is an unfounded grossly unfair and totally inaccurate charge will fix anything??? Nope, it won’t change a thing. No defense. In fact, any defense against the charge of being a racist makes you even more guilty, ROFLMFUEO!
If you want to see real racism, go on the res. I know many who have gone through their entire lives without ever spending a half hour talking to a Y-T White Devil Pale Face and like it that way. They hate you. A lot. You are not a human being. ๐Ÿ™‚
My solution works great for me. Just realize there is no defense against being called a racist and move on. Consider the source and wear it as a badge of honor just to piss them off. Hey, you are not going to change their minds, ever. I’m sorry won’t cut it. We done been labeled as walking, talking, living examples of rascists. Yep, I be Deplorable, and getting closer to the highly esteemed honor of being called Irredeemable. That would be a step up the ladder. ๐Ÿ™‚

fish 905am – Thanks for the heads up Mr fish. The Left’s response to my commentary displays in full bloom both their understanding of what I said, and their Alinsky-like counter. Their leading light Steve Frisch concludes his extensive analysis of the commentary with –
“So lets remind George when he spreads this conspiracy nonsense on KVMR to promote his blog that when you lay down with Richard Spencer, American Nazis, and the KKK you are who you are intimate with.”
I’m intimate with whom??! Now there is an unabashed brain-dead remark. Nevertheless, I do recommend RR readers to get or refresh the full flavor of Mr Frisch by reading his entire contribution on Pelline’s blog here –

Fair enough. Fidel Castro, per his instructions, wanted not one statue, plaque, or memorial abearing his name to be displayed anywhere in Cuba after his death. The reason is Castro wanted the Revolution to be all about the Revolution, not about him. He felt the Revolution was not about a leader or an individual, but it was/is much bigger than himself. Nevermind the face of Che plastered all over the country, lol.
I have no reason to doubt your post. Healing the nation after a bloody conflict that pit brother against brother, father against son or daughter, was a huge rift, to state the oblivious.. I have no say in the matter, just opinions and passions. But, I strongly oppose obliterating history, rewriting history, sanitizing, demonizing, or altering one word of the historical record, unless new information is uncovered. Add to history, as Dr. Rebane’s post says above, That is ok when new information is revealed.
There is not one drop of compassion, love, hate, injustice, nor bias in history. History is just history in and of itself. How the reader of history responds, reacts, have passions flamed or find boring is all upon the reader. I sure wish that Hernan Cortes did not burn the libraries and records of the Aztecs. That was a crime against knowledge and future generations, IMHO.
Reminders of where we started, where we went, and how we got to to where we are now is a vital. Some see the dark chapters only, viewing the past through today’s lenses. I see the past as a celebration how far we have come. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Time will tell if Castro’s wishes are carried out. Just the fact Robert E. Lee desired to heal OUR country’s rift after the bloodiest war on our soil speaks volumes to his character.
Don’t know if there are any plagues or memorials dedicated to the spots where Japanese Americans were interned during WW2. I do know of just one such a place I used to play in as a kid. It’s a public park now. The stonework was nice with metal artifacts built into the terrancing walls and pathways, but it was the mysterious room under a building that intrigued me the most. Under what is now a park rec building and securely hidden by the foundation of the small building, was the old kitchen those who interned built and used. The stone ovens cut into a rise of a small of a slope (open air ovens and hand made stoves, old hunks of iron, etc) are probably still there….but they put a rec building on top of it and no access to underneath. I tunneled into the hidden place as a kid and never could be found in hide-n-seek. ๐Ÿ™‚ No plaques, no nothing to memorialize those who were interned there. Just a park with nice old stone work.
I suppose if there was ever a plaque there or a statue of FDR, it would be torn down in protest today.
Funny, the Left has yet to attack FDR, Woodrow the blantant racist Wilson (who gave us the insane phrase “living Constitution”) or LBJ’s hurling about the n word like water falling from the sky. Wrong political party to attack, I reckon.
Still, the history of man remains, yet now not taught in schools and universities. 7% or lessdesire to achieve a diploma in history, and it is altered history they are taught. Sad, almost criminal, IMH?
It makes sense that since our nation’s history has been scrubbed, there are so many people (young and middle aged) ignorant of the past. Totally ignorant, or worse, believing fiction as fact. History did not begin with the Jim Crow laws.
Condelezza Rice, no fan of Trump, said in 2014 that Today’s Racists are those who defend the teachers’ unions. Everybody has an opinion, everybody had their own perspective, but not everybody has the same facts.
