[This post invites the continuation of the lively comment thread on the expression/suppression of ideas that started in the 10aug17 Sandbox.]

So what happened yesterday in Charlottesville?  We know that a coalition of white supremacists got a permit to demonstrate against the relocation of a Confederate statue, and that leftwing counter demonstrators showed up to protest the protest.  Violence ensued – instigation unknown, results tragic.  Megaphones from all sides have now blared into action.  From the Left and lamestream, the answer to all questions is again unimaginably simple – it was once more the fault of the ‘rightwing racists’ who were egged on by Trump.

And the remedy for it all is even simpler – use government force to deny those deemed racist, nationalist, etc the right to demonstrate in public forums.  Even such good Christians such as Dean Ashford at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (here) and rightwing national commentator Erick Erickson (here) promote such a response to outlier thought and speech.

Before any left-leaning readers get their undies in a bundle, let’s first dispose of the race issue – RR, nor any of its readers to my knowledge, espouse the notion that one race or another is superior.  Counter arguments to this – such as ‘yes, but we know what you really think’ – have been made by leftwingers with bankrupt debating skills, and, no doubt, will be made by them again.  However, RR has strongly argued that cultures are not only different, but also of varying nature as to the quality of life they have provided and continue to provide for their adherents.

As stated here many times – I am a child, student, and defender of Western culture.  Western culture is not static, and has benefited greatly through its liberal mien, over the years by adopting ‘best practices’ from other cultures with which it has come into contact.  And I also believe that people all over the world, who have adopted major tenets of western culture, to that extent they have benefited and enriched their lives.  But today Western culture is suffering a purposed collapse, and the reactionary white supremacists are abetting this downward spiral.  Erickson’s wider appraisal is here germane –

The regressive ideas of the white supremacists in Charlottesville have no place in America any more than the censorious totalitarianism on display last week at Google. They are all from the same strain of secular uncertainty rising as Western cultural certainties collapse.

But to be productive, these debates/discussions should attempt to achieve a common understanding of what ideas can be professed, and by whom in public forums (which include the online media) and in the workplace.  To me the First Amendment prohibits the suppression of free speech, especially ‘speech’ deemed unpopular, by the government AND by citizens who are offended by such speech – that is simply the cost of doing the business of maintaining our American republic.

It is through the open competition of ideas that western culture flowered and continues to increase our enlightenment, and the enlightenment of all societies.  And it is through the suppression of peaceful competition of all kinds – including in the arena of ideas – that will sound the death knell of western culture.  (more later)

[update] Well, this little missive has drawn a bit of ire from our neighbors on our left.  I received an email quoting one of their leading intellectual lights demonstrating his knowledge of American history by taking to task the content of my opening paragraphs.   Thereof he claims that I have written “a bunch of alt-right revisionist, great divide driving, bastardization of American history.”  Fortunately, for the sake of expediency, the depth of his reasoning is both flawed and shallow.  Starting with the name of the 1860-65 conflict, the man has little knowledge of the century plus debate in the learned circles of our academe about the true nature of what the various factions of the South and North sought to achieve.  Here is a reference from Wikipedia citing the legion of authors who have discussed and debated the affair.  Given his age and many responsibilities, I really don’t know how to advise the man about remediating his education, especially concerning his views about the bastardization of American history.

[14aug17 update]  ‘Why were the police held back in Chalottesville?’ is being asked by people concerned about the conduct of the authorities during last weekend’s demonstrations.  Actually, there is a large faction in the country that is not asking, does not want to know, and/or already knows.  The answer to the question is not all that hard to puzzle out – just think about who benefitted from the police being ordered to stand down to let the counter demonstrators confront the white nationalist demonstrators.  When this Virginia town’s response is compared to what has happened in other towns like Berkeley, it is clear that Democrat authorities are now basing their use of police intervention on first satisfying their political agendas.  Strongly invite evidence to the contrary.

Walt, we are wasting our breath. Hate is no respecter of persons and it blinds a man or woman to reason. What we see here is hatred transference. Projection, if you may. Trump had no more to do with a severely disturbed kid (who is not even old enough to buy a beer in CA) plowing a car into the counter protestors than the man in the moon. In fact, even if Trump implored for all to remain calm and condemned the rally a week prior to the event, it makes no difference. The hatred of Trump precedes all current events. And never forget that by association, we must be the targets of hatred as well by those on the Left. It can be no other way.
I see this whole episode as a crass ugly power play. A new Civil War if you prefer. It’s all about those out of power wanting power. Authority is good, benefits the governed. Power is bad, benefiting only those who have power. The Lefties don’t want reason, don’t want anything but their power back. And boy are they ever pissed off.
The easiest prediction since Election Day was the Russian story would not go away for a long time. The Leftists knew they could get a lot of mileage out of it, hopefully to regain power when all their own gun powder was wet. This Charolette incident will grow new legs and will be around everyday for months to come. It’s the Leftanistas new hope for power as their quiver is still empty. That’s all they got, might as well beat it into the ground for all she’s worth.
Thus, we have come full circle. The mantra by the Left was we Trumpamaniacs are racists, bigoted, homophobic, sexist, misogynistic bitter clingers. Deplorables and Irredeemables is an apt insult to hurl our way. This is a good thing! A very good thing. Just proves once again that after they paint us all as horrible in-bred hillbilly redneck knuckledragging Neanderthals, they have nothing left. Nothing, zero, nada, zilch. That is all they have now, all they ever had leading up to the DNC convention, and sadly, all they ever had for many years.
Rejoice my brother. We are all David Dukers again, following our Pied Piper David Duke incarnate, that horrid unspeakable racist President Donald J. Trump.
It’s a great place to be. Last time they hurled the same rhetoric at us, we done took the White House and both chambers of Congress. Let’s hope they never change. Hate has blinded them. Rejoice, Walt, rejoice!
To prove my point about how hate has blinded them, you know how much they hate guns. Everybody know their hatred for guns knows no bounds. After Charolette, they have renewed yet again their call for more gun control. Ok, how many were shot at the Charolette rally? Hmmmmm? Please tell me….. See, hate has blinded their minds. More gun control would have prevented the violence in North Carolina, ROFLMAO.

It ain’t about statues. It’s about removing unpleasant things from some people’s sight, things that are unpleasant to look at and be reminded of. Things that make some people uncomfortable. And that encompasses a whole bunch of spheres. After the statues, I hope they go after the Pelton Wheels. We know how they feel about folks with 4″ dredges…..er, I mean miners and tigers and bears, oh my.

Also, you disingenuous fossil nobody here has stated that it’s not completely legal for the statues to be removed…..only that the question of why should be addressed….and that’s whats being discussed!

Nice try at a punch Paul 12:58pm.
It ain’t about statues, it is about virtue signaling. The steam ran out on the Russia collusion story, it’s no longer “you’re a traitor if you don’t tear into Trump for conspiring with our enemies to get elected” and now it’s “if you don’t agree Trump isn’t denouncing the KKK hard enough, you’re a Nazi sympathizer”.
The Antifa fcks outnumbered the KKK fcks in Charlottesville. And the police let everyone down by not keeping them separated and, possibly, arresting the Antifa who coordinated a large presence without a permit.
Once, during my early US Robotics days, 1992 or 3, one of the Chicago (Skokie, actually, near where the Nazis paraded and later got the ACLU to defend them) engineers came to work with us for a week or so, and on the weekend, Andy N. and I did a day trip with Vladimir over to Lake Tahoe but stopped to take in the Donner Party museum. I’ll never forget Vlad’s doubling over with smirking laughter when he saw the large statue of a settler looking off in the distance… it took him by surprise… he hadn’t seen such things since he left Russia. I think either Andy or I made a quip about in the US, we erect monuments to the folks who screwed up.

That really is the crux of the matter… the only thing breathing life into David Duke are the Left in the media seeking him out as a spokesman for the GOP that refuses to have anything to do with him, and then running to the GOP persona du jour to ask them why Duke is supporting him and whatever the response, it won’t be enough.
    Virtue signaling is like that.

Why were the personnel in the Russian Embassy cheering? Why, why, why?
Why does David Duke support Trump. Why, why, why? Well, you turn on the lights and you will attract all sorts of bugs.
You can’t choose your supporters. Why did this happen? The Neo-Nazi wannabe Klansmen got a permit. The city said you got to stay in the park. Big playground, lots of room were we can keep an eye on the Alt Right. Form a circle around them and separate the two sides. Good plan.
But, the Klan wannabes did not want to be stuck in the park. They wanted to march down the street. They went to court and on Friday a FEDERAL JUDGE said to Charolette, no way Jose. They have a right to march down the street. Free speech stuff and keeping them cooped up in a park violates their rights. The rest is just details on an event.
The story nobody is talking about is the 19 bystanders that got hurt. They looked like the type that were heir holding their signs and peacefully voicing (shouting is ok) their opinions at the Klansmen wannabes. A lot of women, mostly white folk. Maybe some school teachers mixed in with old hippies, Dems, townsfolk, gawkers, young people. Maybe a Hiliary Hodge type thrown in holding her sign and maybe a few wearing pussy hat types. They were not involved in the ruckus. They were demonstrators/protestors, not street fighters. They became the collateral damage. Usually works that way. The ones duking it out up close and personal and clubbing on each other were not those run down by the Dodge Challenger. Too lose to the stink.
Well, if you lay down with dogs, you are going to get fleas. I don’t know why they are called Alt-Right. Maybe cause they need a label or just a lazy way to label them. The true Nazi’s were all in for Socialism. But, that was then, this is now. Whatever.
Opinions, sympathies, horrified appalment….our vote don’t matter. It’s the tip of the iceberg.

Then the Alt-left (and the WaPo asked what is Alt-Left today) organized to attack them. Of course there are some vile people on the right and when they spew fighting words they better be prepared to defend. But some of them deserved to get their asses kicked. Deniers won’t read this because they can not handle the truth and have moved on to attack other commenters but here is the real story from a Charlottesville resident. I am ready for the fake news chants.
A real perspective from a resident of Charlottesville. ( sharing a friends post ..becasue we all need to read this..)
From Patty Nourse Culbertson, resident of Charlottesville, VA:
“My daughter and I went to the rally on Saturday. I want to tell you a little about that. But first, I would like people to understand what it was like in the days leading up to the Alt Right Rally. We first had to endure the KKK rally a month ago where about 30 Klansmen showed up and a whole lot of riot police and about 1000 community members who stood up for racial justice.
We were told they would be armed, nevertheless we showed up. Families, teenagers, college kids, moms, dads – that’s the “Alt Left.” We sang songs and held hands and walked with the clergy collective singing We Shall Overcome. A few angry people, but mostly loving people concerned about their community. We breathed a sigh of relief when we got through that but next we had to face the Alt Right. We were scared. We were not naive. We knew this was a whole different ballgame.
It felt like a slow march to death. They were threatening violence. Said they were coming to hurt people. Yet because of free speech rights, we couldn’t stop them from coming. There is so much more to say about that. That we, as a nation, need to say about that! Some of us took nonviolent direct action training to prepare. Went to many meetings to strategize. How does a community of civilians, with no experience, strategize against a planned terrorist attack. Some of us planned to stay at home. Some of us left town or were out of town on planned vacations. Some of us knew we would face them.
I’m a military brat, and a 20 year former navy wife. Grandfather and father West Point grads. Former husband, Naval Academy grad, and a navy pilot. I don’t know if it was my military background or not, but I can not express to you the dread and frustration I felt as a planned attack on our town could not be stopped by legal means.
We were not armed, they were. We were practicing non violent tactics in order to face armed men. Many of us knew that people would be hurt. I felt strongly that there would be deaths. I am both devastated and relieved that there was only one death.
When I hear our president talk about two sides, I want to throw up. There are no two sides when guns are involved.
When I hear people try to equalize this who were not there, who did not experience the dread we experienced as the date approached, I feel livid. The frustration that this could not be stopped – an armed invasion in the United States of America. A planned terrorist attack. Some got caught up in first amendment rights talks. I did not.
There is no freedom of speech when guns are involved. We are civilians. We didn’t know what the hell we were doing, but we showed up. We showed up. My daughter and I drove through the night from our vacation spot in Maine because I decided I had to be there. I had to help. As we arrived close to town we stopped at a rest area outside of Charlottesville to change our clothes out of our grimy travel clothes and met our first car load of terrorists. Guns, ammo, men stopping to use the rest room with us. They had a permit to invade our town.
Can everyone understand that – they had a permit. The polilce were there with us, and did almost nothing. I have to believe that this was because, the beatings and brawlings were better than a gun battle. Our town was filled with gun toting self appointed militia protecting the alt right. Ak47s strapped on big men, others with long poles, and shields. They had pepper spray and tear gas, and they used it on us. They beat us, they taunted us. The police did nothing but stand guard. Is this what you would want in your town?
When a state of emergency was called, they were forced to leave. They marched out of our town, down Market Street, where they went to Mcintyre Park, where we have picnics and carnivals and where the 4th of July fireworks are every year. Others broke up into small bands and roamed the neighborhoods. My daughter and I left when they marched out of the park. I felt such dread. Where were they going? What next? But we were exhausted and left.
When I got home, I checked FB and friends were saying with alarm – they are marching through this neighborhood, and that neighborhood causing havoc – and as I decided whether I should go back to help, a post comes up from a friend that a car has crashed into some protesters and someone has died. My friends. My friends. I started calling those that I knew were still there. One said she was ok. The other said I am ok but people are on the ground bleeding all around me, and I have to go. I have to pull them out of the road before he comes back and she hung up.
This could be your town. My town. My peace. My home was shattered, and not just on that day but on all the days leading up to it. And Heather, brave Heather died and so many others with serious injuries. And we could not stop that because the Constitution says that they must have free speech. Free speech backed up by big guns. What is free about that. About any of this.
So please do not tell us anything about what you think about how we handled this. Just think about if this was your town, your kids, your park, your home. Know this, they are not through. You will be asked to stand up in ways you may have never stood up before. We will stop this. We, together, will stop this.”

Todd, sounds like things went as planned. What’s up with this new “no masks” rule? That puts a crimp in things.
Breitbart News reported, “Mayor Ed Lee praised counter-demonstrators who had marched across the city, as well as those who marched near the designated site for the protest. ‘They made sure the themes of love and compassion dominated over hate speech,’ he said at City Hall, according to SFGate.com.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that “Antifa protesters beat one man with a shield and another person wearing an American flag.”

One other point though. As a supporter of Planned Parenthood and abortion on demand, RboertC. Did you know Hitler took Margaret Sanger’s eugenics here in democrat America and killed millions with her ideas?

“Oh hell, you got us I guess.” So you support white supremacy then. No surprise there based on your posts that seem to support the nazis in Charlottesville.
However, we’re talking about the present Todd, not two thousand years ago. Mankind has supposedly progressed since then, but considering what is going on in America today maybe not. How would you compare trump to Caesar in terms of dictatorial behavior?

Give it a rest Cross,(and come down off it)
So no statues of Hitler might be found, but most of his extermination camps are there for ALL to see. Do you have any clue why? (probably not, or don’t care.)
They are PRESERVED so no one will forget, or claim “it never happened”. So be a GOOOD Liberal and do your part to erase that history. “out of sight, out of mind”. You coming for any history book that has the civil war in it next? Some asswipe is already wanting ANY civil war artifacts from the Confederacy deemed as illegal, and must be destroyed. That includes those in private hands. ( not that he will get his way,, just the idea is disgusting at face value.)

    Mr. Cross:
Which is worse. You mean I have to decide? So, if I pick one, does that mean I have undying devotion and burning love for the other? Come on, how about 2 out of 3. I just can’t decide.
Another one gets triggered watching from her TV in California.
