    Well, while Paul is deciding how long to pout in silence, I’ll take on Kesti’s take on calculators.
    I think the choice of TI calculators as the gold standard in K-12 education was one of the death knell of “algebraic thinking” in K-12. It didn’t even require the button pusher to parse the number statements as they plugged in the numbers, operators and delimiters. Madness.
    Now, the HP calculators of the time really did some magic thanks to RPN, reverse Polish notation, which really was a more natural way to use a calculator. Punch in one number, punch in the second number, then press the operation. So, adding 3 and 4 would be:
    3 [enter]
    4 ]enter] PLUS
    I remember buying my first HP … it took about 20 minutes of working the same gnarly problem in the manual for some fluid dynamics to really grok how the stack really worked. Just any problem at all could be worked without storing an intermediate result… if one looked at the problem to be worked and worked it as you would with pencil and paper and slide rule.
    Unfortunately, the folks writing textbooks and choosing textbooks and teaching from textbooks didn’t know RPN from their hole in the ground.

    Walt, that wasn’t meant to tar honest and productive private sector ditch diggers, that’s ditchdiggers employed by Nevada County, with benefits. It was, after all, Paul Emery who suggested the cost of Measure W meant roads didn’t get repaired.
    I remember asking a Nevada County road crew flagman, while I was stopped for roadwork under progress on Newtown Road, why the work was being performed by an out of county (maybe even out of state) contractor. The honest answer from the guy…? It would take forever if done by the County crew who didn’t work hard and were poorly managed. I did not write down the guy’s name, for his protection.

    Paul, can you cite a single native speaker of Russian using the term “Trump the Chump”? It sounds more like someone hooked on the zombiefied NPR the Car Show with the dead Click and barely alive Clack, the surviving Tappet Brother, who had used “Stump the Chump” for one of their regular featured segments. I was doing an all too random walk between my kid’s office at Harvard’s chem building just this past Monday when I looked up and saw the well known law office of “Dewey, Cheatham and Howe” sign in downtown Cambridge.

Yesterday he was recycling that old hope and change story that the R’s would abandon Trump because of his numbers and put Pense in. How many times have they floated that lead balloon? 3-4 times since February. Splash, down the drain with that one. Now today, it’s Trump the Chump. Tomorrow it will be “I’m rubber, you’re glue. Whatever you say bounces of me and sticks to you.” A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Personally, with Justice Gorsuch restoring the balance in favor of textualists in the SCOTUS, I feel better already and will feel even better with Kennedy and Ginsberg traded in for an intellectual Scalia/Gorsuch clone. The trend is in the direction of the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Entitlements.

    Absolutely. Of the two Emery Brothers, this seems like a more realistic general philosophy.
    Personally, I don’t think that Trump has the ability to bring down the National Surveillance State. It’s not just a matter of political oomph. His interest in enforcing national borders has caused 1/2 of the country to think of him as the Anti-Christ, defacto open borders being their primary credo. But, the levers of power have moved over time I think. The voters have been largely written out of the script.

    In response to the LIBs on the Russia thing.
    Of course we do not want any nation to “meddle” in our elections. Luckily for us our election was not affected. But the Russian thing has yet to provide a iota of fact but that is not stopping the lamestream media and the libs from thinking they have a way to oust Trump. Not going to happen.
    Even today the SACBEE had two articles on this Russian thing. And the media believes the Russian Ambassador that he communicated a conversation to his bosses. He said he had talked with Sessions when he was a Senator. And how did that get leaked? And why would the press believe the Russian over Sessions? Sounds like a setup to me. And a illegal “unmasking” as well.
    The second was a article on DJT JR and the meeting in Trump Tower. Even though the Russian lawyer said she was not there representing the Russian government, the “journalist” wrote she was there for the Kremlin. That is why Americans are fed up with the press and this issue. Liars never prosper and this is a big nothing.
