‘Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.’

George Rebane

After North Korea’s demonstration of its ICBM a few days ago (here), I am more convinced than ever that China will do nothing to remove that threatening thorn from our side – it will never happen.  Bear with me as I weave some of my reasoning on this conclusion that I have not seen in the pundits’ press.

NK has been on a tear launching various kinds of missiles into the Sea of Japan over recent years.  The pace and variety of missiles launched costs a pretty penny, and it defies understanding how an isolated, sanctioned draconian dictatorship that is financially on its butt can develop and then test the necessary technology that the launches and nuclear tests entail.  The simple answer is that by itself it can’t, no matter how much of what it can dig out of the ground it sells, and mainly to China.

To the technically astute, the ICBM launch demonstrated that NK now has a kit of very sophisticated capabilities in not only an impressive transport vehicle, but also the means to control where that vehicle goes.  The 1,700 mile apogee combined with its landing a mere 500+ miles at sea demonstrated a set of remarkable skills.  It is hard to achieve and control such a high angle trajectory, especially into a small and politically sensitive impact area.  There is, of course, no doubt that all these launches and underground tests also serve as advertising to promote the sale of NK’s missile/nuclear technology to other rogue states – a kind of a twofer when its provoking the flailing foreign policy of the US is considered.

So, if NK cannot accomplish all this very expensive sophistication while under the heel of the fat kid, then how do they do it?  To me the simplest answer comes courtesy of applying the tonsorial tool attributed to Friar Occam – NK is the long-serving surreptitious and sinister shill of the People’s Republic of China.  More specifically, NK serves China as its test bed for missile, nuclear, and other weapons technologies developed in/by China, while it displays a different geo-public face.  The world sees China mainly as focused on expanding its commercial and economic footprint, a peace-loving country that does little to stir the pot of international crises for the benefit of its national interests.  Its South China Sea expansions are just local territorial disputes with no expansive geo-strategic impacts.

(Were I our CinC, I would order our Navy to retrieve NK’s missile components that land in the sea.  We have the capability to go down to over 20K feet deep, do useful work there, and bring stuff to the surface.  It would be most interesting to get a peek at the chipsets, pumps, piping, and other precision machined parts and confirm their provenance for all to see.)

So how does NK act as the supplier of restricted materiel and technology to its customers when we are known to stop and search their suspicious ships on the high seas?  Again, the simplest answer is that these ‘goods’ go through and/or via China on board its merchant marine which plies all oceans and is welcomed in all the world’s ports.  And so does the reciprocal trade that supplies NK’s elites with their forbidden goodies along with enough foodstuffs to keep the millions of serfs from hunger rioting.

NK is the necessary and completely compliant component of China’s geo-strategic plan for achieving global hegemony.  China can push the buttons and turn the valves on NK to direct its irritations wherever and whenever it feels necessary, while at the same time putting up appearances that NK is a hard to manage sovereign nation-state. When one considers this explanation, it immediately becomes clear why no amount of international sanctions will have any material effect on NK’s behavior.  And NK giving hints that these may bear fruit, usefully serves to confuse the west and keep our Left active opposing the adoption and/or execution of a workable NK policy.  China has successfully managed to keep us talking to their puppet while giving scant lip-service as to who is pulling the strings.

They have successfully practiced this drill for decades.  However, we now have a president who doesn’t seem to play by any of the rules established by his predecessors, all of whom believed the political pinheads about how one more dollop of diplomacy would be just the ticket to bring NK’s current murderous tyrant into the community of peaceful and cooperating nations.  Kinda reminds me of Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown.  On his G-20 trip The Donald will have a chance to set us, and perhaps others, on a new course regarding North Korea, but it should not be one that lets China continue business as usual with the fat kid as the dirty end of its anti-west foreign policy.

So what is Trumps military strategy George. So far he created some potholes in a Syrian airfield, quickly repaired with business back to normal, dropped a big bomb in the desert in Afghanistan and talked tough to pathetic little Cuba while praising Putin and the dictator of the Philippines for his inhumane shoot um in the streets strategy of dealing with drugs.
Also you add to that the alienation of our allies in Europe, the neutering of Nato and tough talk about the Wall being paid for by Mexico. He’s pretty much a joke and Putin will slurp him up on Friday. Much cause for concern that you don’t seem to have.

Lil’ Kim was looking for another extortion payment, like he got from “O” and others.
You know, politics as usual. “pay’m to stay quiet.” Trump isn’t going to play that game.
Since Paul doesn’t pay any attention to the news, (his posts reflect that) Trump is doing fine on the world stage. Great progress with the sandbox war. ISIS is getting it’s head handed back to them.(LIB news ain’t going to say that. No way will they help Trump look good.) Trade is starting to work in our favor for a change.(despite the LIBS selling us out to foreign interests for decades)
Now to put the ball in Paul’s court.
OK smart guy, which West coast city should be hit first? It’s either we stop them, or we get nuked. That lunatic WILL use nukes the minute he has a working unit.
So just how bad do you want to see a nuke go off over us?
Liberalism has allowed it to get this far.
And NO. I will not share my “prepper” stash with you. When and if the shit hits the fan, your on your own. Watch how fast the handouts dry up.
At least Hawaii is taking the threat seriously. They are revamping, and restocking their nuke shelters. You can bet Alaska is too.
It’s hit, or be hit these days. Which do you prefer?
    (Let the crickets sing.)

I don’t know what’s wrong with people who can’t see and appreciate what America is when it comes to human rights. Our Constitution makes it possible for ordinary people to realize their dreams if they put effort into it. That’s why so many people come here. The problem we’ve been having for some time is caused when government grows too large and makes excuses for more regulations, fees and taxes on private sector businesses and workers to feed itself. Ever notice how much the people’s servants pay themselves? President Trump knows both sides, and hopefully will be able to restore sanity and prosperity to America and those who create it. Our government has sacrificed millions of our brave young men, and $ billions all over the world helping other nations. Like individuals, these nations have the power from within to choose what they’ll become.

A quote from Trump himself will answer your 4:18
“Trump, April 4: And Wolf Blitzer asked me a question on television. He said, let me just ask you about NATO. And he asked me about it. Now, I haven’t been asked about NATO a lot, but I understand NATO and I understand common sense and I’m, like, a smart person, like many of the people in this room, hopefully all of the people in this room.
But he asked me about NATO. I said it’s obsolete. This is my first thing. And you know what? I’m the first one. Guys that study NATO and good people, but they study NATO and they say, I don’t believe it, what he just said, I never thought of that. They study it because they’re so into it that they don’t realize.
Because it was really put there — you had the Soviet Union and now you have Russia, which is different, but Russia is very powerful, so we can sort of say that’s a balance, so we’ll leave it. But it doesn’t really cover terrorism like it’s supposed to. It doesn’t have the right countries. I mean, many of the countries in there aren’t, you know, that you associate with terrorism.

The evidence for ISIS being on its back heels is to simply look at the territory they controlled a year ago and compare it with what dominion they have today. It is a sad commentary that our lamestream covers none of this, thereby causing our leftwing neighbors to ask for evidence of ISIS’ retreat since their habitual outlets have left them in the dark. And sadder still is that way too may of our lightly read millions also look at the lamestream for their news, never realizing that they are getting filtered propaganda instead. (All you have to do is look at the political leanings of the newsroom who laughably still try to convince their audience that their work product is impartial journalism. You can’t make this up.)

    George,
You hit on an issue that has been puzzling me for a while. How can the Nork’s develop sophisticate technology when under a global sanctions. Your Occam’s Razor answer seems credible, they are really testing China’s technology. Anticipating the capability of the US Navy to pick up stuff off the ocean floor, I am hoping they are doing what they are capable of doing with a high degree of professionalism. In the 1970s we had the capability to track Russian entry vehicles to splashdown. Assuming we still have that capability we know where the entry vehicle is on the ocean floor, with in a reasonable search zone. All those parts have serial numbers and source ID all part of a quality control and tracking system. I will bet they are not written in NorK.

Oh Walt and Dr. Rebane @ 5:59 pm
, Punchy is just playing dumb again. He likes to play possum. Yesterday the Washington Compost and Criminal News Network ran the story how US backed Syrians breached Raqqa, leaving ISIS control of an area about 600 square yards…in the entire area. Don’t believe me? Ok, read it on NBC.com, BBC, etc, etc.
Another sign that ISIS, like Punchy, is on its heels is they have stopped all offensive tactics and strategies and instead are relying on defensive maneuvers. They are sending out rogue suicide bombers in trucks and are booby trapping their last strongholds. They still control coastal regions of Libya, but that is only because our attention is on Iraq and Syria right now.

Lil’l Kim needs a good carpet bombing with MOABS, and smart bombs. Send NK back to the stone age. Our high tech toys know where every artillery piece is. Those should be the first to vaporize. Or anything else that could mess with the South. Then the nuke sights, minutes later. OH.. there is plenty that we can do. Just get rid of the JAG lawyers who
tied the hands of our troops in the Gulf conflicts. Those LIB “rules of engagement” is what got our troops killed.

I regularly check multiple news sources for contested issues. Sometimes the best ‘source’ isn’t a single one, but an amalgam of several.
Drudge wasn’t considered a ‘credible’ news source (and still isn’t for many) but managed to get the truth out about Clinton when no one else would. If you filter your input of information through a lens of what you consider to be an ‘agreeable’ news source, you could leave out part or all of what is the truth of a matter.
When it comes to situations such as we have with N Korea, I tend to be wary of everything I read no matter what the source as it’s impossible to get a lot of good info from inside the country itself.
If a nuke were to detonate over Hawaii, I would have to go pretty much with what ever the Fed govt tells us, but I would have to also be open to the fact that they are lying or just wrong. Some times the real story comes out later. Look how many decades it took to find out about the USS Maine. Now I realize a missile can be tracked, but we also have those darn satellites that can just drop right in rather unexpectedly.

    Dr. Rebane, concerning the topic.
I remember the decades of the Chinese military building up its arenosol with almost exclusively defensive weaponery. Hardware like anti-aircraft systems, naval ships patrolling her harbors and coastline, buying thousands of tanks, and its Air Force nearly deplete of long range bombers. Even their subs stayed closer to home. Yes, there were always exceptions.
Then one day I read of the ground shaking shift in China, i.,e., the move from defensive to offensive military capabilities.
North Korea? I remember the North Korean sub in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) as well as NK being the biggest state sponsored counterfeiters of the US dollar on earth. Very impressive printing presses. That was then, this is now.

I hate to interrupt this sophisticated exchange of bon mots, but I have a question for Dr. R that is actually germaine to the topic of this post:
If your theory is correct, when will the Chinese apply the brakes? It must have occurred to them that we will retaliate if North Korea is perceived as a real threat to the U.S., and that China and Russia are likely to suffer collateral damage, particularly if any nuclear weapons or material are destroyed when we strike back.
And if we don’t get all of the nukes on the first strike, at least one is likely to be launched toward the south or Japan, rendering those areas nuclear waste sites for a very long time.
Does China really want to take that risk?

Perhaps because there are different mafias within China all with their hands partly on the controls.
I like GR’s theory, but it could be that using NK as a tool is a group decision. That is to say, there’s no specific guiding intelligence or plan behind it, but the result is the same. Mass intelligence can put you into some strange places.

The exponential increase in the N Korean missile technology can be tracked directly to Iran getting paid by 0. The nexus between Iran and fat kim has been long established. China may not be as ‘in’ as we think. Take a psycho ayatollah with the cash and will and fat kims scientists and what they could be planning may unfortunately surprise even the Chinese. 😉

    Like

  43. George Rebane Avatar

GeorgeB 130pm – Thank you for that very germane question Mr Boardman. For openers, I don’t see that NK must appear to be on the threshold of a nuclear first strike against the US for the fat kid to remain a useful and manipulable asset for the Chinese. NK can be pulled back at any time by Xi Jinping at a moment’s notice. We forget that it only takes the slightest nod from President Xi, and the fat kid becomes dog food with the NK high command and families watching from the stands. Those communication back channels have been in place for years.
Second, there are yet a number of nuanced shows of force available to us before commencing a military strike against either NK’s nuclear or missile programs (since I believe those to be really nothing but demonstrating China’s capabilities). I can detail a number of these, but then, so can you. Third, a measured, surgical military strike against, say, NK’s next insipient detonation/launch, supportive facilities, or even the rocket batteries threatening Seoul will definitely not trigger a larger war with China. Why? Because it is in neither China’s nor America’s interest to escalate the conflict into a war between superpowers. For one thing, China is not ready, and, as mentioned above, a rogue NK can continue to serve China’s interests without the capability to nuke the US. China has too many good things in the works all over the world that would come crashing down if they suddenly declared themselves to be an ‘Article 5 ally’ of the existentially most evil tyranny on the planet.
BTW, any US strike on NK will be first communicated via back channel to China so that 1) they will not be surprised, and 2) that they may decide to redirect the fat kid and give us the evidence that they did. China and the US are de facto economic allies joined at the hip through commerce and debt, and China will not let NK spoil that relationship, especially if Trump carefully explains the matter to Xi (and then we won’t even tell the world what we conveniently didn’t find on the bottom of the Sea of Japan). Thoughts?

As an aside, in the northern hemisphere the prevailing winds are from west-to-east; any radioactive fallout would be swept eastward and would present a bigger threat/nuisance to the US than to China. We would not need to use nukes – that’s why God invented the MOAB – but perchance if we would, they would be fractional kiloton warheads placed on deep penetration bunker buster rockets that would cause minimal disturbance on the surface.

If the North hit Seoul today the weather system would send the main cloud up along the Chinese coast. If it blew in Pyonyang on a launch pad etc. a ground burst would blow across the top of N Korea along the Chinese coastal areas and coast. That’s with a big low sitting between N Korea and Japan. The weather has a lot of impact on the fallout. Rain could wash much into the ocean and so on. As noted they have relatively low yield weapons but even a small one on downtown Seoul would be catastrophic. 😉
