Norm Sauer

In my column last month (http://www.theunion.com/opinion/norm-sauer-the-progressive-swamp-of-washington-d-c/), I predicted the surveillance of Trump and his team by the  Obama administration may be a story bigger than Watergate.

To date an enormous amount of media attention and investigations about direct Russian collusion with Trump have found no evidence.  However, little attention has been given to improper unmasking of surveillance and leaking, and yet this has far more credibility based on contradictory statements by Susan Rice, the reported data on unmasking, and Obama’s expansion of access to intercepts.

On March 22, House Intelligence Committee chair Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) announced that he had learned that members of President Donald Trump’s transition team had been under surveillance by the Obama administration, that individual names had been β€œunmasked” by the intelligence community, and that those names had been leaked to the media.  Nunes said that while there was no direct β€œwiretap” by President Barack Obama of Trump Tower, there was indeed surveillance β€” perhaps collected incidentally β€” of people close to Trump, possibly including Trump himself.

Rep. Nunes also reported something stunningly new: that the surveillance did not involve the ongoing FBI inquiry into Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 presidential election.  He emphasized, none of the surveillance had intelligence value.

β€œI believe it was all done legally,” Nunes told a press conference. The question, he said, was why names of those swept up in the surveillance had been leaked. So, the collection of the intelligence appeared to have been legal, but the leaking may have been illegal.

In a PBS interview later on March 22, 2017, Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice denied any knowledge of the intelligence community’s incidental surveillance of Trump’s transition team or of any β€˜unmasking.’  Her words, β€œI know nothing about this.”

On April 3 the Bloomberg View reported that White House lawyers learned that the former national security adviser Susan Rice requested the identities be unmasked of U.S. citizens in raw intelligence reports on dozens of occasions that connect to the Donald Trump transition and campaign.

Contradicting her interview on PBS, on April 4 Susan Rice was interviewed by Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC.  Rice admitted engaging in unmasking U. S. citizens in intelligence reports but claimed she didn’t leak β€œnothing to nobody.”  Further, Rice implied President Obama ordered the compilation of intelligence reports on Trump officials when she said, β€œthe president requested the compilation of the intelligence, which was ultimately provided in January (2017).”

It is important here to mention that on March 29, Evelyn Farkas, Obama’s former deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, while on Morning Joe admitted: β€œI was urging my former colleagues, . . . get as much information as you can, get as much intelligence as you can. . . Because I had a fear that somehow that information would disappear with the senior [Obama] people who left … that the Trump folks – if they found out how we knew what we knew about their … the Trump staff dealing with Russians – that they would try to compromise those sources and methods . . .”

The reference to β€œhow we knew” is evidence that Trump and his team were the objects of Obama administration intelligence reports, and we know from other sources those reports regarding Trump personnel were unmasked and leaked by the intelligence community to the major media most likely with the knowledge and blessing of Susan Rice and President Obama.

The sole purpose of foreign intelligence collection is to understand the actions and intentions of foreign powers and their operatives.  Proper surveillance of an American citizen requires that either a crime be involved or suspicion of being a foreign agent, either ground requiring a FISA warrant.

So, we have conduct, conflicting statements and admissions by the Obama administration officials of unmasking and leaking of intelligence concerning Trump aides and possibly Trump himself probably for a political purpose.  In the past, Benghazi lies about a you-tube video and the IRS’s misuse against conservative non-profits by Obama’s administration suggest political considerations were his and his administration’s top concerns.  Hence, it seems surveillance of Trump and his team probably was politically motivated.

This surveillance, unmasking, and leaking of intelligence on president-elect Trump and his team, if done for political purposes such as to delegitimize his presidency and leadership is an abuse of power and an offense against the public trust.  Necessarily involved in this scandal are the entire intelligence community, Obama’s right-hand person Susan Rice, and probably Obama himself.

Stay tuned.

Norm does enough stretching in this piecee to put most yoga instructors to shame. As far as “delegitimizating ” a President you got to give that award to Trump and the birther movement he spawned while Obama was President. Don’t bother responding with the obscure reference to Hillary’s campaign in ’08. That’s old fake news.

Hillary started the birther movement. Trump simply picked it up and rn with it. Trump is fine. He has the courage to forge ahead. I look at the left and see nothing there except their “judges” to stop the changes. This is all rather fun and watching a leader take on these slobs of the media and their lackeys, the democrats, is simply great!

Today’s elite argumentative double standard mentality is interesting. Many people have a problem respecting the opinions of others they consider less educated than themselves. This may seem a little off topic, but our nation’s leaders, along with those who elect them seem to have problems obviously related to public education and our hypnotic media
Monday evening a bunch of us drove to Auburn to see the movie “The Case For Christ,” the true story based on former legal editor (of the Chicago Tribune) Lee Strobel’s experience during the early 1980s. He was an atheist. When his little daughter almost choked to death in a restaurant, and was saved by a Christian nurse who happened to be there. This resulted with Strobel’s wife being converted. This caused a great rift in their marriage, so he decided to investigate the facts surrounding the case for Christianity…mostly to discredit it to his wife. He considered himself intellectually superior and factually based, therefore only physical things exist. He interviewed biblical scholars, medical doctors and psychologists; read history, philosophy and apologetics; studied archeology and ancient literature; and meticulously picked apart the Bible.
The education process of this stubborn man is an eye opener.

The “delegitimizing” campaign that Norm Sauer noted was happening against Trump seems to be taking a toll on his support.
It appears voters have buyers remorse abut voting for trump. According to a Fox Poll released today If the election were to be held today he would only receive 36 % of the vote with 55% preferring to vote for somebody else.

We know that comrade bernies wife wont be leading any attacks on the President anytime soon. She apparently committed fraud in the loan application for the school she ran into the ground (now closed). The FBI and postal service (mail, wire fraud) want to know why she lied claiming nearly 3 million bucks in donor commitments to get the 3.3 million bank loan. The problem is the records only show 600k was actually pledged. Must be that socialist math! Did you hear that comrade bernie has 3 homes? πŸ˜‰

Imagine this scenario: Hillary Clinton is president. It’s learned that she has deep ties to Putin. She puts utterly unqualified billionaires in cabinet posts. She puts her daughter Chelsea in a position of influence in the West Wing. And Chelsea’s husband is her chief advisor. She refuses to release any of her tax returns, and she blocks access to the visitor logs in the White House. Bill refuses to live in the White House, so millions in tax dollars are spent keeping him safe in New York. Meanwhile, Hillary spends almost every weekend lounging around a resort she owns, AND, in an interview she names the wrong country she attacked while bragging about the chocolate cake she was eating at her resort while the Tomahawk missiles were in the air.
The outrage, the outcries, the screaming by the Republican National Committee, Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Mitch McConnell, would be heard around the world.

It’s a sure sign of desperation when the hard left has make stuff up without pretending they weren’t making stuff up. Like when Democrats were so disillusioned with President Bill Clinton that they flocked to “The West Wing” where very week they could enjoy an hour of the President they thought they were electing in ’92.
Imagine had Hillary’s campaign manager had not pushed his team in the media to promote Trump as a Pied Piper candidate before the primary season voting even started.

Paul, face to face, how many times were you spreading the good news that Dems would have to help GOP voters pick up the pieces of their self esteem after the election, to reintegrate them into the body politic, some semblance of a mojo to move forward while accepting they really don’t matter anymore. Nov. 1, 2017: The base excise tax will increase to 30 cents a gallon.
July 1, 2019: The price-based excise tax will reset to 17.3 cents a gallon, about half-a-cent more than the rate the Brown administration projects will be in effect by then anyway.
The 47.3-cent combined excise tax in effect July 1, 2019 will be adjusted for inflation beginning July 1, 2020.
    Average annual revenue: $2.4 billion
    Diesel taxes
Existing: The base excise tax is 16 cents a gallon. The state also collects two categories of sales taxes on diesel fuel: the regular state and local sales tax, which averages 8.44 percent, and an additional 1.75 percent sales tax.
Nov. 1, 2017: Base diesel fuel excise tax will increase to 36 cents a gallon. The 36-cent excise tax will be adjusted for inflation beginning July 1, 2020.
Nov. 1, 2017: The 1.75 percent diesel fuel sales tax will increase to 5.75 percent.
