[Mr George Boardman, our beloved compatriot debater and member of The Union's considerable cadre of leftwing columnists, has again declared his true colors in today's 'Who's behind Calexit?' Therein he presents a pernicious conspiracy theory, blaming the whole movement on those dastardly conservatives.  "It appears to me that Calexit is being funded and supported by shadowy forces that are less interested in ridding California of its tormentors than makings the rest of the U.S. permanently red. That’s why Breitbart News and Infowars haven’t exposed this threat to the American Way of Life."  Calexit a threat to the American Way of Life??!!  Aside from that little bit of humor, my real question for our readers is what possible "Observations for(sic) the center stripe" can Mr Boardman hope to offer?  Perhaps he can expand on both claims.  gjr]

Not dodging, Punchy… just bored. It’s a meaningless poll, verifies the populace is getting the news the NY Times and Frisco Chronicle wants to print. Can you identify other presidents elected despite 96% of journalists being against them, and continuing the campaign even after the inauguration? Or campaigns to scare musicians away from working the inaugural balls?
I get it, you don’t want to talk about the real issues. Gorsuch doesn’t hold your interest. What about judges in WA taking over foreign policy?

Watching this morning’s Morning Joe right now… and they’re expecting the real Trump approval is now about 48% and identified it as a number Obama would have been happy with through much of his reign.

Is it not the role of the Judiciary to question those powers and render an opinion if there is a potential question? Is that not the intent of the Constitution?

    From the always invaluable Instapundit…..

SENATOR AL FRANKEN: DeVos ‘fundamentally incompetent’ to lead Education Dept.
“During her hearing, Ms. DeVos proved beyond a shadow of a doubt not only that her ideology is fundamentally incompatible with the mission of the Department of Education, but that she is fundamentally incompetent to be its leader,” Franken said Monday from the Senate floor.
“This is not a job for amateurs,” the former “Saturday Night Live” comedian added.

I’ll just leave that last line lying there as we segue to Kevin Williamson:

On the merits, the Democrats do not have much of a case against Betsy DeVos, Tom Price, or Steven Mnuchin. The Democrats are making a dishonest argument (Do they make any other kind?), most intensely against DeVos, that being “qualified” for an office means agreeing with the Democrats on substantive policy questions. DeVos has spent most of her adult life working on education-reform projects, and the fact that these projects are based on policy positions at odds with those of most Democrats is not a question of qualification — it is a question of whether the president is entitled to nominate to the agencies officials who reflect his views.
    He is.

Oh Al….you will always be the drunken baggage handler on the train in “Trading Places” to me.

Paul Emery. Trump is draining the swamp. The swamp dwellers don’t like it. His poll numbers are immaterial. He is doing what he promised and what the voters asked him to do. He is going to piss off lots of people before he is done. He doesn’t care and his supporters don’t care. Your obsession with his poll numbers is really odd, especially in light of your obsession with the polls before the election and loudly proclaiming he would never win. You have no credibility. Ever think about discussing something that matters?

re PaulE’s 951pm – Yes, when there is a clear point of law or constitutional issue at stake, the judiciary is brought in to adjudicate what the Legislative or Executive branch has done. But the plaintiffs themselves in the suits have made no such case, nor has the judge included that factor in his ruling. On the lamestream even ex-SecState Albright, co-signatory of letter denouncing Trump’s temporary ban, admitted that the protest case is based on a policy disagreement and not on a point of law. You can expect our progressives readers to be silent about this aspect of what’s in front of the Ninth Circus today.

Well that’s an opinion George. Others have differing views. There is no doubt in my my mind Trumps intentions are for a Muslim ban. That was well documented by Trump during his campaign. The Constitutionality of that is what courts are for, sorting these things out.

PaulE 845am – It also happens to be the opinion of the judge issuing the stay. The “opinion” you cite is based on the Constitution and explicit reading of standing US Code Section 1182(f). Now, can you recall what the counter-opinions cite for their claim for a legal basis? More here –

Waking up with the power on is more fun than going to sleep with the power failed, the reason for my delay here.
Paul, the Constitution does not give a judge in the hinterlands the right to direct immigration policy. It’s a separation of powers issue (those are defined in the constitution also, Paul) usurped by a progressive judge backed up by the most liberal of all the circuit courts. The president is granted by the constitution and statute virtual dictatorial power over which, if any, foreign nationals can cross into the USA.
You’d better hope (beyond the usual humanitarian reasons), that in the wake of this, an ISIS sympathizer from an Obama 7 country doesn’t commit a violent act or Trump will gain a great deal.
Political power seized by an unelected judge with a lifetime job is as bad as judicial or legislative power usurped by an out of control executive. Maybe worse.
This will work itself out. Might not get right until Gorsuch is in, unless at least one of the justices on the left decide to pay attention to the text of the Constitution over their own senses of social justice. In related news, there are four judicial vacancies in the Ninth Circuit that Trump will be free to fill in the next month without fear of a filibuster from Senate Democrats, thanks to Reid’s Nuclear option. DiFi thinks it’s an emergency to block nominees that might be closer to Scalia than Ginsberg.
    We live in interesting times.

Paul, DeVos is the GOP darling because she is seen as a cudgel against the teacher’s unions who are the Dem’s cash cow.
GOP readers should not celebrate her all that much because she really has no great ideas besides parental choice, which is good but not sufficient for good K-12 education. In particular, she seems to support the same inquiry based, child based classrooms that have led to failure in the first place.

Whom I will trust as I will adders fang’d,
They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
    And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For ’tis the sport to have the enginer
    Hoist with his own petar’
; and ‘t shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon: O, ’tis most sweet,
When in one line two crafts directly meet.

The GOP should send a thank you card to Enginer Harry.

    Drain the swamp?????
Sure…ask Betsy DeVos And Her Family. Direct cash contributions from her family to the Senators that voted for her is not pay to play right?
“One thing that could come to her aid is that she and the entire DeVos family are massive Republican Party donors who helped fund the election of the remaining senators who will decide her fate.
Big donors often get positions in government, ambassadorships or ceremonial titles, but rarely do they come as big as DeVos. Sitting Republican senators have received $115,000 from Betsy DeVos herself, and more than $950,000 from the full DeVos clan since 1980. In the past two election cycles alone, her family has donated $8.3 million to Republican Party super PACs.”

Punchy, that is wonderful news. Thank you for sharing.
“What matters is what families and students think about having a change agent in this position,” Janine Yass argues in a Washington Examiner op-ed. “If you judge from the tens of thousands of families on waiting lists for charter schools and for scholarships in private schools it is apparent that poor families are desperate for someone who will fight for them for a change.” Yass also scolded the media for ignoring “the faces of the millions of families and students who have been the victims of bad education policy.”
Sadly, Democrats and their media cohorts are more interested in protecting what they accurately consider the Holy Grail, because indoctrination masqueraded as education is the pathway to statism. And Americans are fed up with it. Thankfully, with the help of DeVos’ agenda, they will be ignored no more.”
