The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you can see. Winston Churchill

George Rebane

Well, the Dems now have a rip that’s hard to hide – they are a bit fragmented after the election didn’t turn out as bought and paid for, and their intramural shenanigans were exposed to the world, and everyone now wants to become the DNC chairman.  But the real split is between the Bernie and Hillary factions – Bernie is still not sharing his list of double dummies who bought into his communist-lite copy.  But not to worry, they’ll find a way to come together and continue tearing down the vestiges of what the Founders left us.  The Agenda21 goals are still there waiting to be fulfilled; there are more items that need to be checked off.

Union columnist Mr George Boardman, who also graces these pages from time to time, made a remarkable assertion in his 16jan17 column comparing the gains and pains to different constituencies from a Trump presidency – “For Trump’s detractors, the worse will mean a halt to the social advancement of those of us who aren’t white heterosexual males, an end to that annoying “political correctness,” more polluted air and water, an end to reproductive and other rights women have taken for granted, and a general coarsening of what passes for civility.”

It’s hard to catch all the head-turners in that breezy list, and I wager that many did not.  In what recent decade were white heterosexual males still deemed by anyone to be advancing socially in America?  What evidence is there that Trump can outdo the EPA’s and other agencies’ screw ups in creating “more polluted air and water”?  Withdrawing federal funding of abortions suddenly spells “an end to reproductive and other(sic) rights women have taken for granted”?!!  And the “general coarsening” of “civility” occurs almost entirely when leftwing thugs smash windows, burn and loot stores, defecate on police cars, and trash public parks and streets when they rally and march, all in the name of demanding their civil rights (aka more money from the government).

The Clinton Global Initiative is kaput.  This demonstrates in the most convincing way possible that the whole Clinton thing has been a ‘pay for play’ scam of magnificent proportions.  How many of us were vilified by the local lefties when we pointed this out in the months before November.  Today it's suddenly hard to find people who voted for Hillary and will still defend the woman, her crooked family, and corrupt enterprises.  The lamestream has also been cooperatively reticent to report the countries, international bigwigs, and tinpot dictators who pulled their CGI ‘memberships’ and ‘donations’ after Hillary’s loss.  But there is an upside – little people will get to hear Hillary and Bubba who are now much more affordable and available to speak at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Resume Speed, Oregon.

[update]  Ever wonder why no one has brought up Sen Ted Kennedy’s documented entreaties to the USSR to help defeat President Reagan in his 1984 re-election has never made the news?  That would open some eyes now focused on the unfounded allegations breathlessly reported about Trump’s personal life and contacts with the Russians.  Where are the banner headlines?  (more here, here, and here)

The Left’s reconstruction of Obama’s legacy now in full swing includes a prominently paraded and most remarkable meme claiming that our first half-black president’s tenure was scandal free.  Leftwingers (including some RR readers) have been employing that narrative in the attempt to cover up the trials and tribulations visited on us by both Clintons and paint the pre-inaugurated Trump administration as being already corrupt.  In ‘Obama’s ‘Scandal-Free Administration’ Is a Myth’ Messrs John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky set the record straight.

“Trump’s extreme agenda” according to Mayor de Blasio is the new president’s intent to enforce federal immigration laws in self-declared ‘sanctuary cities’, while the political leaders of such cities that harbor illegal aliens, who are fugitives from justice, are not practicing an extreme agenda when they break the laws of the land and impede federal agents attempting to enforce the law.  And to think otherwise makes one a radical rightwinger and racist.  Such is the normal working of a liberal mind.

[18jan17 update]  Is it now safe to say that The Union is solidly a leftwing newspaper?  Given the strongly-denied, recent longer term audit (here, here, and here), the current spate of pre-inauguration columns and letters, today punctuated with an unmistakably partisan editorial (here) by the paper's Editor Mr Brian Hamilton, it seems that there is no question about which way our local paper leans, or has toppled.  No blame, no shame about all that unless they continue to bullshit the community that they are still an impartial observer and a balanced voice about matters socio-political.  Most certainly it is not what the local looney Left claims is "The Tea Party Gazette".

President Obama, true to established form, today delivered two whoppers during his last news conference as president.  He told us of an America that still has a “small sliver of folks” who are doing very well, (seatbelts please) while the rest of the country “struggles for scraps”.  Then he gave us the reason for that being that “people of color” aren’t out there doing enough voting because the “United States is the only country among developed countries that makes it harder for people to vote.”  Ever try to vote in Denmark, or Germany, or the UK, or … without having to prove your citizenship and/or residency?  Nevertheless, it is most appropriate that the man exits spewing consistent copy that has characterized his term in office.

George, either way Bush and the Repubs was unaware of what was going to happen. The Repubs had total control of the Congress from 94-04 10 years. All 8 years of Bush brought us was economic collapse, 9-11 and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hard to top that

PaulE 714pm – Being unaware (as was everyone else) and acting as a causal agent are two very different things. In the past your strong position has been that the recession was caused by and the fault of Bush2. Given the instituted Democrat mandates to impose dubious lending practices on banks, and their contemporaneous testimonies pooh-poohing the visible weakness of Fanny and Freddie, I’m amazed that you still spout the Democrat Party line. But then I suppose that I shouldn’t be.

Hmmm. If memory serves me right, the big push by Congress was to increase home ownership for po folk and especially people of color. Remember all those community organizaters protesting outside bankers’ homes? Yep, outside their homes with the bankers’ kids hiding inside as the Acorn types were demanding the rich banks filled to the rafters with bags of money loosen their lending standards. Called it discrimination. Worked like a charm. Remember the pressure on lenders to not be so strict in their standards with silly things like verifying income and ability to pay? Unfair!
Remember Congress telling banks that if they wanted to open up another branch ever again, they better start passing out mortgages to poor people or folks who did not quite not qualify? Not quite be able to pay the monthly nut or even the first payment.
Bubba really pushed it along with Barney Lisp Frank leading the charge and by the time W was in his 2nd term, black homeownership hit record highs, Mission accomplished! Right now, black homeownership is the lowest it’s been in 30 years.
No worries. They have been loosening the qualifications again due to pressure on the lenders…..so here we go again. Interest only loans are back! Balloon payments are back! No money down? No problem……it’s back.
Blame those darn community organizers who have no experience in the private sector and nothing but stew for brains. Here we go again! Another mess for Trump to clean up.

BillR 828pm – You remember correctly Mr Tozer. And we covered all of that several times in these pages during years of the recession which ain’t over until it’s over. And it all started with –
“The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA, P.L. 95-128, 91 Stat. 1147, title VIII of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1977, 12 U.S.C. § 2901 et seq.) is a United States federal law designed to encourage commercial banks and savings associations to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Congress passed the Act in 1977 to reduce discriminatory credit practices against low-income neighborhoods, a practice known as redlining.”
The subsequent bad laws and regulations this monster fathered are legion, and gave us everything we deserve today including Dodd/Frank.

Thanks Dr. Rebane. I started to say it began under Carter, but I skipped that to bring it closer to more recent history. Why this is even being discussed again after 100’s of thousands of words written on the subject is beyond me. Strike that. We all know why. Keep throwing something at the wall until it sticks to a R. Any R. Any time period. That is the bottomline. Hate blinds a man and clouds one’s reason.
Do you know what all POWs that made it through and came out not totally screwed up for life have in common? At some point they realized they had to stop hating their captors to survive. They came out and led good healthy adjusted lives. Like McCain, but I see hate has come back into his eyes. Hate blinds, pride is a prison. I know. Hard to let go sometimes, but pain is a great touchstone to get to the other side. Good night, sir.

While we’re on the subject of economic “whizzes”…..looks like California forgot to “carry the one”.

“The administration discovered accounting mistakes last fall, but it did not notify lawmakers until the administration included adjustments to make up for the errors in Brown’s budget proposal last week. The Democratic governor called for more than $3 billion in cuts because of a projected deficit he pegged at $1.6 billion.
“There’s no other way to describe this other than a straight up error in accounting, which we deeply regret,” said H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the Department of Finance.
The agency followed its normal practice by waiting to report the errors in the governor’s next budget, he said.
Brown’s deficit projection was driven by more than just the accounting error, Palmer said, noting that California tax collections came in below expectations for most of the first half of the fiscal year.
The massive hole in the Medi-Cal budget surprised state lawmakers.”

Well they deeply regret it so I guess that it’s OK!

PaulE 1126pm – Thanks for that Peter Schiff comment; I was waiting for someone from the Left to bring up the predictive prowess of the financial poohbahs. Ever since the 1970s when I started managing my own investment portfolio I have been an avid tracker of prominent financial and market ‘experts’. Also having a bit of a scientific bent, I and my similarly trained colleagues quickly applied some math noodling to all the different advisors’ predictions we were reading and found that they were all over the place. The ones who wanted to make more money from the sheep were the predictors of imminent financial catastrophes. So starting with the likes of Howard Ruff during the Carter years we have had book, newsletter, and now website publishing pundits with a solid record of correctly predicting 37 of the last four recessions – depending on your mood, you could always take your pick.
To suggest that from this gaggle 1) our president should be well read, and 2) then to have picked out to believe Schiff, when 3) no other government units charged with monitoring the economy did not, and 4) and then attempting a solo remedy from the WH, 5) that has no tools for short term economic adjustments, is beyond ludicrous but totally expected from the Left which since Marx has believed (to disastrous results) that central planning and controlling elites were the answer to every socio-economic problem in the land.
The rearview mirror is a wonderful device for determining what happened, and today there are uncounted studies that have shown that it was government that gave the 2008 recession its depth and duration. Something no one saw in 2008 because no one knew Obama would be elected and then enact double dummy policies to extend the pain.
In your case Paul, with your years’ long record of focused Bush2 bashing, this kind of an assertion is one more litmus test that confirms the ‘Bush bashing syndrome’ from which you and your ideological colleagues still suffer.

Wish I had a dollar for every article I have read about the impending next crash and financial collapse. The debt crisis (gov’t), leverage too high, the Chinese etc. Always count on one as soon as the market goes up too quickly. Usually the quote Ron Paul. Most are just ads to buy gold or survival kits. With that said, a big crash will come. Just playing the probabilities. Good agrument to get back to the dollar backed by something other the faith and goodwill of Uncle Sam’s IOU.
Boardman may be proven correct in time. What goes up must come down. When? How far the drop? The best and most experienced will tell they look into a cloudy ball, not a crystal ball.
The very very very few who called the collapse of the debt market in 2008-2009 are rock stars. The ones that went beyond just hedging their bets. It will be their glorious intro to every article or speaking engagement for the rest of their lives. They (the very very few) ironically have a long record of getting it wrong before getting it right.
There was that gal who predicted the Orange County collapse because of derviratives. When she predicted the impending collapse the CA Muni Bond Market, she was attacked ruthlessly and her reputation.destroyed. No longer a rock star.
Nobody wanted to hear that and it would have affected every city, county, and special district accounting and investment practices. The pushback was furious. Like when Dr. Rebane and others first starting questioning our County’s unfunded liabilies a few years back. How dare them! “We are the experts! Here, take a handful of assurances home with you and don’t come back.”
The collapse of the muni market never came, but that gal attributed it to her warnings and financial officers running municipalities quietly altering their practices behind the scenes. She was right even when she was wrong, lol
Somehow, people like the former gal “rock star” always get in the last word. Too much energy wasted to win stupid agruments. AS EVIDENCED on these boards. Got to get the last word in, got to win a stupid agrument at ALL COSTS. Pride is a prison.

So Bush was not responsible for the economic crash but the Democrats were. that’s the gist of your scholarship in this matter. Also the Bush bailouts were appropriate but the Obama bailouts were wrong and responsible for our increased deficit. Bush innocent of responsibility Obama guilty. Democrats solely guilty for the housing bubble.. Pretty simplistic but that sounds like what you’re saying.
Surprised you disregard Peter Schiff, a well respected Libertarian economist and Ron Paul supporter.

That is why I personally put most everything in unmanaged index funds to cut out the gurus and save greatly on expensives and energy trying to beat the market. Sure, I have a few individual stocks and holdings, mostly for sentimental reasons.
BYW, I don’t have anything to do with CAL-PERS, but I read last year they are moving more money into Index Funds to save massive amounts of expenses. Guess matching the market is cheaper than trying to beat the market…with mixed results.

Obama’s economic policy was wrong in that it lead to insufficient growth and massive debt. Don’t ask me to defend it.

I’m not asking you to defend it I’m asking you to respond to the scenario that you posted earlier. That an author released a book indicating what would likely happen economically during a downturn and that the administration at the time failed to warn the populace.
Well economic conditions are similar (worse actually) and I’ve yet to hear any warning from the administration.
“I mean the word was out and ignored by our President and his economic whizzes whose job is to lead this country.”
Obama has a similar coterie of “Whizzes” and by most measures we are very close to a similar event that which occurred in 2007. Any recession will likely set off the next “Worst Economy Since the Great Depression” but the conditions for recovery are markedly worse due to the vast increase in debt during the Obama administration.

Looks like Trump is going to restock the swamp with bottom feeders who scooped up the tidbits left behind by those who lost everything in the crash of 2008
Here’s Steve Mnuchin’s, Trumps financial picks record of profiting off the poor and desperate in ’08. New leve; of scum in the swame as Trump restocks it.
“ his bank, renamed OneWest, could foreclose on homeowners, harvest fees for appraisals and inspections and late payments, and get protected by a federal backstop. The FDIC lost $13 billion on IndyMac; Mnuchin and company made $3 billion in profits, most of that coming directly from the FDIC in loss-sharing costs.
What that meant for homeowners was they were rubble to be plowed so Mnuchin could profit. Borrowers got few options to modify loans, as OneWest dashed to foreclosure. The bank pursued all of the tricks of the era—servicer-driven defaults (where servicing companies tell homeowners they must miss payments to get help, and when they do, they move to foreclose), dual tracking (when servicers negotiate modifications and pursue foreclosures at the same time), and more. Activists ended up on this guy’s lawn demanding that the foreclosures stop.
And there was a decided racial component. Sixty-eight percent of OneWest’s 36,000-plus foreclosures in California were in nonwhite areas. Just two weeks ago, fair-housing advocates accused OneWest of racial discrimination in lending and where it closed bank branches. OneWest also was a market leader in foreclosing on the elderly; its subsidiary Financial Freedom has carried out a disproportionate number of reverse mortgage foreclosures, which target seniors to suck out their home equity. ”

“People have been talking about the end of the cycle for 12 years, and I’m excited if it is,’ he told the Globe and Mail in March of 2007. “I’ve always made more money in bad markets than in good markets.”

Paul still thins it was a great idea to give home loans to welfare recipients, or those one paycheck away from it. No Paul, home ownership isn’t a right. Only if you can afford it.
It doesn’t matter what color you are. LIB sub prime loans were such a great idea.
I was working down the hill building those planned developments. It didn’t take long to notice people showing up in cars that were refugees from a scrap yard, looking and “buying” half million dollar homes. If one can’t afford a good car, what makes one think they can afford such nice digs? I knew even back then that that could never turn out well.
I got the same calls and sales pitches for that “cheap money”. This common ditch digger even knew better that to take that bait.
Bill even pointed it out to you. Yet you still didn’t listen, or your reading comprehension skills suck. Banks were FORCED to give those loans.
Don’t blame the private sector for buying up the foreclosures. Who else was there? The Gov. that caused the problem in the first place?

I forgot you don’t have a magic picture box Bill. You missed one hell of a show.
You may have to hit up Youtube for the videos of it. My eyes were filled with tears of pride more than once. Songs were sung that you would NEVER hear at a LIB rally.

Blaming the sub mortgage crisis on the CRA ( Community Reinvestment Act) is easy to disprove. Here’s a start
First of all it wasn’t Harlem, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit or any other poor, largely minority urban area covered by the CRA. No, the crisis was worst in Florida, Arizona, Nevada and California. Indeed, the vast majority of the housing collapse took place in the suburbs and exurbs, not the inner cities.
Also many of the lenders that made the subprime loans that contributed so much to the collapse were private non-bank lenders that weren’t covered by the CRA. Almost 400 of these went bankrupt soon after housing began to wobble. This is according to Barry Ritholtz of the Washington Post .
According to the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission “The three credit-rating agencies were key enablers of the financial meltdown. The mortgage-related securities at the heart of the crisis could not have been marketed and sold without their seal of approval.”
It was collusion by pirates and bottom suckers such as Steve Mnuchin and Donald Trump that manipulated the markets and credit ratings agencies so they could make billions at the expense of the working poor and middle class.
I can go on and on about this but don’t have time.

Yep, just got an e-mail from a lady in Colorado. She was in the military back in Nam era. He husband and I were buddies back in the day. She worked at Walter Reed as a nurse patching up the boys. Haven’t heard from them in years. They found me after all these years and said they are in tears watching Trump on
TV and thought of me. Go figure. Made me cry as well. She was crying, I am crying. He husband is crying watching the TV. Oh my.
We got your back Mr. Trump.

Paul. Since “O” is giving drug cartel leaders commuted sentences, and now ElChopo is on U.S. soil,, will “O” give him a pardon?
