[This is the transcript of my regular KVMR commentary broadcast on 17 August 2016.]

Student debt and college costs are out of control.  Under the passionate paeans of progressives over the last decades, we have been taught that we’re equal enough so that everyone will benefit from a college education and therefore everyone deserves a college education.  A wider reading of this theology has also taught young people that everyone has a right to pursue their passion and then expect all practiced passions to command a more or less equal place in the compensated workforce.  Well, that ain’t necessarily so, but blindly pursuing such a value system has landed us in a world of hurt with more of it on the way.

College costs that include tuition have increased about 4% annually, far outpacing inflation.  To enable everyone to go to college, government has taken over the student loan business, and now lends equally to all students with no thought about their ability to repay the loans.  Students majoring in art history and therapeutic recreation can borrow on the same basis as students majoring in physics or any of the other STEM fields.  Subsequently the art history and therapeutic recreation majors can’t get jobs while the STEM graduates are in high demand.  Each year there are about 1.3M openings in STEM fields, and fewer than half that many graduates in science, technology, engineering, or math.

Such realworld inequalities in the marketplace have yielded a student debt exceeding $1.3T that continues to grow at almost 7% annually.  In ten years student debt will exceed $2.5T.  Today about 30M students attend college.  Of these, 22M students with outstanding loans are not making payments, with the inevitable result that at least half or over $600B of this debt will have to be written down and its repayment transferred to taxpayers. (more here)

And what did we buy for all these billions?   According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York almost half or our recent college graduates are un- and underemployed in jobs that do not require their earned degrees.  With this y’all come policy only 48% of entering full-time students graduate within six years.  Almost all of these dropouts and miseducated former students have borrowed from the government, and their repayment rates are close to zero simply because they are not working or cannot earn enough to pay down their debts.

More reasoned voices, such as finance academics S.P. Kothari of MIT and Korok Ray of Texas A&M, recommend incorporating credit risk into the student loan programs. (more here)  The short of it is that students with better job prospects who can pay off their debt would then more likely get bigger loans.  Listeners may recall that it was lenders ignoring credit risk that brought on the recent Great Recession from which we have yet to recover.  However, for some reason it is still deemed politically prudent to ignore credit risk when the government lends trillions to students with unemployable majors.

To top this, along comes the next wave of promised socialism to make college free for everyone to pursue their value-free passions along with a carte blanche invitation to join the government bloat when the private sector rejects their skills.  This β€˜free’ program is estimated to cost somewhere between $100-200B annually.

As a conservetarian who has tracked institutions of higher learning and the evolution of the job markets, I don’t hold much hope for including credit risk to determine who should get to borrow how much.  This for the simple reason that the Left has too much to gain from the legions of graduates with lightweight majors from institutions, already hopelessly in bed with socialism in all its forms, that turn out young people totally beholden to the state for their upkeep.  These people daily demonstrate their fealty to the politicians and parties that promise to shield them from the uncertainties of the private sector through civil service jobs or rapacious regulation of their employers.  And some still wonder why democracies are so fragile.

My name is Rebane, and I also expand on this and related themes on Rebane’s Ruminations where the transcript of this commentary is posted with relevant links, and where such issues are debated extensively.  However my views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.  Thank you for listening.

Then there’s “The STEM Crisis: Reality or Myth?”, which mostly supports the myth conclusion.

Still, an underemployed chemist is more likely to be able to repay their loans than an Art History major.

Gregory 1229am – point well taken; even though the STEM hiring deficit is probably true, no doubt some unfilled jobs are also due to a mismatch of STEM majors. Nevertheless, Is not The Chronicle of Higher Education the communication arm of the leftwing national ‘professors’ union’ which will always argue that they are fulfilling the nation’s higher educational needs?

George, since the default position of most unions is that you need more of our members, not fewer, if your characterization of the CHE is correct, the article would seem to be at cross purposes to the normal leftwing professor on the street.
Speaking of being on the street, the business news from Silicon Valley is that Cisco Systems has another layoff on the horizon.

Had a conversation with a laid-off 59-year-old chemist last night, who is taking early retirement as employment does not seem to be one of his options. Spend his total career in the oil industry, switching to biofuels 6 years ago. Said, biofuel funding has dried up and will be so until oil is well over $100 a barrel again. Even STEM chemical engineers are finding career choices can be limiting.

Buying votes is easy. Simply give people stuff with other people’s money. I noticed that the BLM’s platform includes planks to kill charter schools and private education, plus free college for all blacks. Wonder who benefits from the elimination of private and charter schools. A mystery I tell ya. Certainly not the student suffering through CA’s public education system, nor the parents trying to get their children out of a subpar imploding K-12 free education. Could it be the Occupy Wall Street crowd never went anywhere?
As far as our Community colleges go, perhaps they should be free. They practically are already. You could easily afford our to attend our junior wannabe colleges doing yard work on weekends.
Our current top heavy system free public education system pumps out millions of students who graduate from high school so friggin undereducated they cannot even be enrolleded in a freshmen bonehead math course or even a dumbbell English Lit course. Thus, a community college will allow the high school grad two more years to get up to speed and get ready for college. Apparently our fine youth move slower than precious generations and need more time to master what I call my 7th or 8th grade science, math, foreign language and an average understanding of what a book is talking about.
Free college is needed for those who need college just to learn what they could not apprehend in the government run grades 4-12. Plus, it gives them more time to adjust to the outside world. Baby, it’s a cold cruel world out there. They expect results.
I see a problem with BLM plank to bar private education. Elizabeth Warren makes $350,000 a year for teaching ONE class per semester at a private education institution. If private education is banned, then Lizzy Warren would lose her platform to rail against the dastardly unfair income inequality.
Seems to me banning charter schools (yes, they are a mixed bag) and private education would make us all equal in the dumbing down of America.
Perhaps the old prose “Ours is not to question why, ours is to do or die” should be updated to “Ours is to question why or else we continue to do and die.”

I thought it was “Yours is not to wonder why, just invert and multiply” (an old elementary math education joke regarding division by fractions, akin to magic to some).
The latest innovation in our bottom tier colleges is turning what used to be no-credits-toward-graduation remedial work into credit bearing classwork, possibly coming to a community college near you for the kiddies certified college ready by Common Core testing. A lying weasel of a former NUHS principal used to boast that something like 70% of their grads go on to post-secondary education… which includes an ignored year or two at Sierra College trying to work through remediation because they’re not capable of college level work despite the NUHS diploma… like the folks (young and old) my late first wife taught 7th grade math because they still needed to pass algebra for the AA they want or to transfer into a CSU.
Lubricated by adult beverages I once asked a Sierra College trustee what percentage of students entering that august institution of higher learning exited with an AA or a transfer into a four year school. He said, and I quote, “Don’t ask”.

Well, let’s cut to the quick, shall we? Let’s seperate the bone from the marrow. To butcher a line from Milo, “Liberals have done such a fine job running our education system that perhaps we should let Conservatives run it for awhile and see if that works.”

    Pay to Play at State
Crown Prince of Bahrain Forced to Go Through Foundation to See Clinton, after Pledging $32 Million to Clinton Global Initiative
Hollywood Executive Casey Wasserman, Slimfast Mogul Daniel Abraham, Controversial Appointee Rajiv Fernando also among Clinton Foundation Donors Granted Special Favors from Clinton State Department
(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released 725 pages of new State Department documents, including previously unreleased email exchanges in which former Hillary Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin provided influential Clinton Foundation donors special, expedited access to the secretary of state. In many instances, the preferential treatment provided to donors was at the specific request of Clinton Foundation executive Douglas Band.
The new documents included 20 Hillary Clinton email exchanges not previously turned over to the State Department, bringing the known total to date to 191 of new Clinton emails (not part of the 55,000 pages of emails that Clinton turned over to the State Department). These records further appear to contradict statements by Clinton that, β€œas far as she knew,” all of her government emails were turned over to the State Department.
The Abedin emails reveal that the longtime Clinton aide apparently served as a conduit between Clinton Foundation donors and Hillary Clinton while Clinton served as secretary of state. In more than a dozen email exchanges, Abedin provided expedited, direct access to Clinton for donors who had contributed from $25,000 to $10 million to the Clinton Foundation. In many instances, Clinton Foundation top executive Doug Band, who worked with the Foundation throughout Hillary Clinton’s tenure at State, coordinated closely with Abedin. In Abedin’s June deposition to Judicial Watch, she conceded that part of her job at the State Department was taking care of β€œClinton family matters.”

Hillary plays the race card in Reno today. She should have played Keno.
What a load that liar spews out. But her lemmings will follow her anywhere as they want their taxpayer checks to continue. My guess is she had to pay the few hindered people attending her screed fest. (Trump had thousands today) Who other than the lamestream media actually believes her rants? Everyone is a racist, a bigot, a homophobe. My goodness how does she sleep at night as she appears to be afraid of anyone who is not a brain dead democrat. I bet she believes the world has real zombies!
So Hillary, please, stop with the race card mantra, Americans of all colors are asking you to stop it. Grow up and be the good communist you really are. We are Americans. She did not mention her own support for women hating middle east regimes she took money from. Hmmm.
