    “Barack Obama, by the time he is done, will have been the greatest educator on the failure of liberalism and the failure of big government in American history.” Newt Gingrich
    Sadly that is a difficult proposition to pass on. To understand the lesson, educators need students with appropriate cognitive skills and attention spans. Obama and his ilk of educators have no such students.

    Bret Stephens is one of WJS’s venerated political pundits whose writings regularly grace some of the country’s leading news/commentary publications along with being a regular talking head on Fox News. He has been virulently anti-Trump (along with most of WSJ and Fox people), and has long rooted for a massive Hillary victory that would sweep The Donald off America’s political stage. Today he takes to task Fox’s Sean Hannity, an unabashed Trump fan, in a most bare-knuckle attack, ‘Hannity’s Veneration of Ignorance’. It is worth a read to see the real discord in the Republican Party.

    Here are some old polls and guess who won those elections?
    “Past polls have also shown Democrats leading their Republican opponents up to the election. One of the most dramatic was a Gallup Poll result 2 weeks before the 1980 General Election that showed Jimmy Carter to be far ahead of Ronald Reagan. Rush Limbaugh stated,
    In a Gallup poll on October 26th in 1980, two weeks before the election, Gallup had it Jimmy Carter 47, Ronald Reagan 39. That election two weeks later ended up in a landslide that was so big that Carter conceded before California closed.
    The New York Times verified this poll,
    Ronald Reagan, who trailed President Jimmy Carter 47 percent to 39 percent in a survey completed on Oct. 26, 1980.
    As did Wikipedia,
    Arguably the most important event of the entire 1980 presidential campaign was the second presidential debate, which was held one week to the day before the election (October 28).[24] On October 26, two days prior to the debate, Gallup released a survey that suggested that Carter was leading Reagan by a margin of 47% to 39%.
    A Gallup Poll of July 26, 1988, showed Michael S. Dukakis leading George H. W. Bush by 17 points. The New York Times reported,

    The Union has an online poll:
    Who are you voting for in this year’s presidential election?
    • Hillary Clinton —”I’m with her.”
    • Donald Trump — “Make America great again.”
    • Clinton — “Because I hate Trump.”
    • Trump – “Because I hate Clinton.”
    • Third party – “The two party system is corrupt.
    • Undecided
    Realising this is not a scientific poll, by just some readers of the Union online it might be of interest in our ” Purple County” Trump is ahead:
    Poll Results:
    Donald Trump “Make America great again.” 28.88%
    (326)
    Hillary Clinton ”I’m with her.” 25.16%
    (284)

    My thoughts? I don’t believe for one second that 284 say they like Clinton. Like, have you ever met someone that really really likes Hillary? One person besides Debbie Whatzername? Where are all the media articles extolling Clinton’s virtues, her great accomplishments, her fabulous ideas she brought to pass or her inspiring vision of America?? All we get is “Trump is a berry berry bad man” from the Grandma.
    Opps, The question was “Who are you voting for”, not why are you voting for the Queen of Sleeze. Me bad. Sorry.

    Not so fast, Bill – on NPR they interviewed a woman who claimed she was a life-long friend of Hillary and that they still did ‘sleepovers’. I kid you not. Probly’ had s’mores and hot cocoa in their Hello Kitty jammies. This ‘friend’ of Hillary claimed that the ‘real’ Hillary was just a bundle of fun.
    This is what passes for hard news on NPR.
    Now, I can certainly believe that Bill still has ‘sleepovers’. That would be a whole ‘nother interview and I think NPR would give it a pass.

    Obamacare. The big increases are set to kick in in 2-3 years as the real costs were backloaded. Subsidies set to expire after Obama is gone. How long do you think Obamacare will last in its present form??
    Quotes:
    Humana said it will stop marketing its exchange plans, and will only offer individual plans in 156 counties across 11 states — a decline from the 1,351 counties across 19 states it currently serves.
    UnitedHealth which sold plans in 34 states this year, will only offer policies in three next year – New York, Virginia and Nevada.
    Blue Cross reported losing hundreds of millions of dollars on its exchange plans across the country…..In California, the company is expected to raise rates 19.9 percent – more than triple the average annual increase.

    Leaked e-mail shows Soros urged Clinton to intervene in Albania civil unrest
    Soros urges the then-Secretary of State to get the international community involved and pressure the Prime Minister to “forestall further demonstrations” and “tone down public pronouncements” as well appointing a senior European official to act as the mediator.
    The left wing billionaire also gave Clinton a list of potential nominees to appoint as mediator: Carl Bildt, Martti Ahtisaari and Miroslav Lajcak.
    The e-mail was sent from Soros’ aide to Richard Verma, then the Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs who forwarded it to several of Clinton’s top aides including Huma Abedin, Jacob Sullivan, and Philip Gordon. Sullivan forwarded it to Clinton.
    Just three days after Clinton received the e-mail from Soros the EU ended up sending Soros’ suggested nominee Lajcak to mediate the civil unrest, the BBC reported.

    California’s Six Figure Pension Club Has More Than 20,000 Members.
    There were 853 people who retired in 2015 with annual pensions of $100,000 or more. Previous years make up the remaining 20,000.
    The pension fund is more than $139 billion in the red and just reported another awful year of investment returns. The East Bay Times reported last week that CalPERS’ retirement debt “averages out to $11,000 for every California household which is relevant because taxpayers, not government workers, must make up the shortfall.”
    ooo
    Most state pension funds are deep in debt, but CalPERS is among the worst in the nation. Things are only getting worse, since the fund reported in July that it had achieved just a 0.61 percent rate of return in the past 12 months. The system is based on the assumption—a bad one, according to people who study this sort of thing, like the Society of Actuaries—that it will earn 7.5 percent every year. Anything less than that only adds to what taxpayers already owe in the form of future pension promises.

    Russ, the e-mails just keep coming. I like the one about the Nigerian-Lebanese billionaire who donated a million to the Clinton Foundation. That got him access to the State Department instantly. No red tape to cut through. Plus, they had to take care of him and find him a position. Hillary via Huma and Mills had Doug Band make the direct call to the billionaire. Dougie co-founded Teneo along with Bill Clinton and a top official at the Foundation……that then hired Huma while both Mills and Huma were simultaneously working for the taxpayers at State and the Clinton Foundation. Because of the call made on behalf of the Nigerian/Lebanese billionaire, Bubba was flown to give a speech for a cool half million dollars.
    Question: Did the Clinton’s receive anything of value when Cheryl Mills at State negotiated the location of Bill’s speech for $500,000.00 after the billionaire donated to the Foundation? Well, having the Foundation pay for Bill’s private air travel as a result of State’s approving the terms and location is something of value that the Clinton’s received. Free air travel for Bill, paid for by the Foundation. A thing of value was received…..not earthshaking, but just a tiny example.
    Another question was why did Hillary set up the private server? Most of us felt it was to avoid FOIA requests. I am being to think it was set up and used (before Hillary said she had the server set up in running) to hide the melding of The Foundation and State. She turned over all the e-mails….except they were found on Huma’s computer after Hillary destroyed them, lol.

    Russ: The Union polls are not scientific, as you say, and therefore a total waste of space. Why post the results when they don’t mean squat? A concerted effort by any one person could change the results overnight. To gloat over a Union poll is absurd.
    On CALPERS and pensions: The Sheriff makes over $180k a year with benefits. When he retires he will be in your $100k+ retirement club. What do you think about that? And since when are government workers NOT taxpayers? On top of paying income tax around 1/5 of their income goes straight into Calpers. Also, most calpers workers ALSO pay into social security. So your negative insinuation about calpers recipients is way off base. Why don’t you spend your time talking about tax cheats like Trump and the rest of the ultra-rich with their off shore tax shelters, rather than public employees who have chosen to make a living serving the public?
    I think a lot of the anger promulgated by the wealthy against public employees and unions is because the large corporations DO NOT want to pay workers a decent wage nor provide acceptable benefits because it takes away from their own bottom line. So they stir up jealousy between the private sector workers and public employees to gain support for anti-union (anti-worker) policies that serve only to put more money into corporate coffers. The anti-public/union ploy then translates into anger toward public employees by private sector workers who fail to understanding that the reason they themselves work for crap wages and benefits (if they are lucky enough to get them) is because they aren’t organized. That angst is then transferred to their fellow working Americans instead of the corporations who are at fault. Divide and conquer. By the way, do you also consider your AirForce pension to be a taxpayer ripoff also?

    “And since when are government workers NOT taxpayers?” Since government is and always has been a cost center and not a wealth generating profit center in the American economy. That does not mean that all workers getting government checks are free loaders, not at all. A goodly fraction of them actually perform needed services that private citizens want/need to buy wholesale from THEIR established collective, i.e. government. Nevertheless, even those services are considered as a net cost in the national accounting. Only socialists think otherwise and preach that to the unread.

    Ah, another social justice warrior speaks. Here is the former trade off concerning our invaluable, yet unaccountable and practically pink slip proof, fine upstanding civil servants. You work for low pay and get a good stable pension until your time has expired.. The private pays more, but no guaranteed pension backed by the taxpayers. Like those members of Congress who accept the low pay, but get generous perks. Then they leave the sacred position of public servant and rake in the real bucks. Low wage for stable retirement. Now, you guys want prevailing wage or a better than average wage AND all the perks plus healthcare. Nope. Pick one or the other. Sure, that was back in the Patty Duke days when you could allow your kids to walk to school (except rainy days) and not have the school call CPS on the parents.

    Let’s not forget the sheriff’s pension from Sacramento County, which he may already be collecting.
    According to the county’s figures, 23 percent of county employees (229 out of 981) had total compensation of over $100,000 last year. That percentage would be even higher if you eliminate the temporary workers.
    For once, I agree with Russ. CalPERS and CalSTR haven’t averaged the 7.5 percent return in the last 20 years, and we are reaching the point where programs are going to have to be cut to fund pensions. Pension benefits are going to have to be reduced and employees are going to have to make a bigger contribution before the system collapses.
    P.S.: Before Goodknight gets all agitated, I want to retract my characterization of Trump “slandering” the Khan family. The word was inappropriate. “Disparage” would have been a better word. This is an example of why good editors are valuable and should be used whenever possible.

    Not confused at all, just pointing out that both sides of the political coin “vet” their candidates, if that is what you call it. A better term, considering the influence of cash in modern elections, would be to use “buy” instead of “vet” as donations at the high end seldom come without strings.

    OK, so Boardman retracts his petit slander, and now claims the correct word to use would be
    Disparage

    dis·par·age
    dəˈsperij/
    verb
    past tense: disparaged; past participle: disparaged
    regard or represent as being of little worth.
    “he never missed an opportunity to disparage his competitors”
    synonyms: belittle, denigrate, deprecate, trivialize, make light of, undervalue, underrate, play down; ridicule, deride, mock, scorn, scoff at, sneer at;
    run down, defame, discredit, speak badly of, cast aspersions on, impugn, vilify, traduce, criticize, slur;
    informalpick holes in, knock, slam, pan, badmouth, dis, pooh-pooh;
    formalcalumniate, derogate
    “they disparage Lawrence and his achievements”
    derogatory, deprecatory, denigratory, belittling;
    critical, scathing, negative, unfavorable, uncomplimentary, uncharitable;
    contemptuous, scornful, snide, disdainful;
    informalbitchy, catty;
    archaiccontumelious
    “disparaging remarks”
    antonyms: praise, overrate, complimentary
    Origin
    late Middle English (in the sense ‘marry someone of unequal rank,’ also ‘bring discredit on’): from Old French desparagier ‘marry someone of unequal rank,’ based on Latin par ‘equal.’

    OK George, so that’s what you meant to write… same question: what are Trump’s actual words that fit that claim of yours? Really, I am keen to understand what, besides the need to tear down Trump to avoid reporting on Clinton’s misdeeds, drove the Khan frenzy. After all, it was Khan that cast the first stone when he used the DNC stage as a platform to issue false and defamatory statements about Trump, and false statements about the Constitution that any Harvard Law graduate should be ashamed of uttering, unless, of course, the false statement tends to line their pockets.
    Khan’s business of facilitating green cards for wealthy Muslims wouldn’t do well during a (legal and Constitutional) Trump Muslim immigration pause, would it?

    RobertC 1203pm – NO, they are not. They are the communal costs we are willing to pay** for services that are best delivered by an agent of our collective will – i.e. government. If that cost v. wealth concept is still too difficult for you to grasp, then consider poor countries that cannot afford workers who do not manufacture items but only provide services for wages paid for by wealth generators. Were they also wealth generators, we would not have to pay taxes since government would then be self-funding. And poor countries could increase the wealth they generate by just enlarging government to provide more services. Since that is not the case, government is a cost center in our and every other economy.
    Perhaps a picture would explain this even better. Please study this flow diagram of how the economy generates GDP. Even though government spending contributes to GDP, its contributions come (inefficiently; some of the monies unaccountably just disappear) through taxes, taxes, and more taxes, all of which are collected from the wealth generated by the private sector.
    http://rebaneruminations.typepad.com/rebanes_ruminations/2012/05/a-look-at-gdp.html
    ** The cost of services which are forced upon us by government – i.e. the ones we don’t want/need and assigned mostly by faceless bureaucrats – are funded by monies taken at gunpoint from us which are properly labeled tribute, not taxes.

    Now Gregory, disparage is a fine word. Ridicule is the only weapon some of us have left when the The Wrong Side does not give a hoot about Sharia Law followed in our democracy, facts, invasion as opposed to immigration, a bad economy, having lawlessness at the highest levels leading us forward into Banana Republic status via corruption or simply being shown they are wrong. If they admit they are wrong to themselves, then they must examine it, chuckle perhaps, and discard the dead weight. Or, be like Mr. Ant whose only choice is to fight or flee. Which leaves me with only one weapon: Mockery! 🙂
    synonyms: ridicule, deride, mock, scorn, scoff at, sneer at
    The answer to your question is yet to be realized. Either Mr. Boardman cares about the feelings of political pawn Khan brought out from obscurity and thrust on the national stage to slam Mr. Trump or he does not. Either Mrr. Khan is what America looks like or not. Note: 14 American Muslim servicemen have been killed in Iraq and Afganistan since 9/11. The Ft Hood shooter does not count. Either Trump slammed Daddy and Mommie Gold Star or not.
    Either Trump disparaged Daddy Khan or not. You know, Daddy Khan who said he ran for Prsesident of Afghanistan (lol) and certainly is a ham for the camera. Appearing behind Hillary smiling broadly with a shit eating grin and holding up a Hillary sign cracked me up….in a red ball cap. Sweet! He certainly is an attention whore.
    Bottomline: As long as they believe Trump is a racist, homophobe, Islamaphobe, misgonist, and a straight white guy, they cannot ever support him or even cast a glance towards The Monster Trump. “Trump is a racist” is their trump card and it’s the only thing that matters, right or wrong, fact or fiction. It’s their mantra that allows them conveniently look away. Trump became a racist 24 hours after he tossed his hat into the ring.

    Ah yes, that notorious ‘7.5%’ is being rediscovered as the folly it has been for the last seven plus years. For the new reader, and the forgetful longtime reader, RR was among, if not the first, to disparage that expected return number that was introduced at the recession’s nadir. At the time I wrote a regular Union column, and in its 16aug09 edition, we find ‘Public Pensions – a breakdown’ which I expanded in these pages under the title ‘Public Pension Ponzi’ (link below). And all this occurred two years after we at SESF presented our BoS with an analysis and warning of the county’s unfunded liabilities. All of these, to us obvious, insights were sniffed at by our betters in the Rood Center and in Sacramento. Evincing belated discovery or surprise at such gross and moss covered ignorance today is simply fraud.

    The only negative I can find in Trump’s defense was:”I’d like to hear his wife say something”… Her appearance as silent window dressing struck me as odd, too.
    Khizr Khan claimed Trump “sacrificed nothing” for the country and had never read the Constitution. Really? No, he hasn’t had a child lost in combat, but there are other sacrifices that can be made, and losing a child in combat is not a license to slander, especially when the slander is an economic benefit to the slanderer.

    Walt, you better hurry if you are going to enter it in the Demolition Derby. Be sure to tie a big stuffed Hillary to the front grill.

    Walt, they will never get it.
    We fought the American Revolution, not the French Revolution or the Russian Revolution. We fight for the US Constition, not the Canadian Constitution, the German Constitution, the European Constitution, the Mexican Constitution, northe Costa Rican Constitution. We did not fight for the redistribution of wealth. We fought for Liberty from the monarchy, Liberty from tyranny and Liberty for the consent of the governed.
