[13jul16 – This commentary sans update also appeared in the op-ed pages of today’s Union.]

George Rebane

ReinetteSenum2Well good for her, she has the courage of her convictions and the determination to represent her constituency – the people who voted for her.  While I take great exception to Reinette Senum’s grossly uninformed assertion that the nation’s police “have obviously been given directives to go out there and kill. It’s insane and it’s meant to create mayhem”.  Holding that belief and stating it publicly should not be grounds for requiring an elected public official to resign.  It may be one of the few honest statements politicians have made in this election season about what they believe.

I have known Reinette for years and have enjoyed working with her on panels and local media broadcasts.  We have broken bread together and taken the time to trade views and ideas.  While as a conservetarian I don’t fly in tight formation with her politics and many of her public policies, I do respect her as a strong and energetic voice for a significant and perhaps dominant constituency of Nevada City neighbors who have visibly celebrated her many works in the community.  Today she again represents these people in city government.

We live in a democratic republic in which citizens get to decide the politics and policies of their representatives.  And running unopposed in Nevada City, Reinette was nevertheless elected to serve on the City Council by over 1,000 voters.  It is these people she represents, and they deserve to have their representative seated and serving their best interests.  In our form of governance it is not for those in other jurisdictions to judge and remove those for whom Nevada City voted.

Since we have not heard an outcry from Ms Senum’s constituents asking for her resignation or demanding her recall because she misrepresented herself to them, we can reasonably presume that her stated sentiments also represent those who voted for her.  The only voices that should matter in this affair should be those of Reinette’s constituents.  In America it is not a crime for one cohort of citizens to hold views, whether or not politically correct,  that disagree with those of others even if they are the majority.  In our land diverse and minority viewpoints should also be heard, and they should also be represented in public offices as the laws allow.  Hang in there Reinette.

[13jul16 update] Ms Senum made an additional statement reported in the 11jul16 Union where she is quoted on the front page regarding her controversial Facebook post.  From the Union article

“It’s a conversation that is overdue,” she told The Union Sunday. “Obviously I hit a sore spot. But it’s a conversation that needs to happen,” adding the whole thing is a concealed political attack from a local group who tries to damage her reputation.  “We will be dealing with them shortly, this is much deeper than what it seems,” she said.

The obvious question on every reader’s mind – Which local group is it whose members will be dealt with shortly?  And who are the “we” surrounding Ms Senum that will be doing what kind of  “dealing”?

A correspondent brought this little item to my attention, and I was unable to answer these questions.  Can anyone help?

[14jul16 update]  Last night at a special meeting called to address council member Reinette Senum’s above reported remarks, the City Council of Nevada City unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Nevada City Police Department and the nation’s police departments.  I thank NC Administrative Supervisor Ms Corey Shaver for sending me a pre-release copy of the passed resolution that has yet to be numbered and fully signed before its official release and posting on the city’s website.  Readers can Download NCresolution_13jul16 .

[18jul16 update]  George Boardman, Union columnist and RR commenter, wrote an excellent article in today’s (18jul16) Union that fills some holes in the community’s awareness of Mr Senum’s deeper ideological recesses and views of the world.  Most of us have been unaware of the lady’s extensive writings and strong opinions found on her FB page which Mr Boardman has researched and presented to us.  From my reading of the piece, the quoted bagatelles are not just gratuitous pickings to pique our ire, but instead represent a germane development of Ms Senum’s attitudes along with some fundamental tenets of her belief system.  In this they are a positive contribution to the community’s ongoing discussion of a complex and multi-faceted issue that cannot and should not be dismissed with one of the several pithy ten-second soundbites now making the rounds.  The Reinette Senum Affair may yet serve as a productive teaching episode for our community.

Nice post again, Bonnie. Lynch mob? Well, only the good citizens of Quaintytown with 3 digit address can lynch her and they probably are too ignorant to tie a proper noose. 13 knots. The rest are just the mob in the peanut gallery and they won’t have a rope.
Perhaps you could go out and talk to them….especially the wives of every LE officer who at times fall to their knees whenever that thought in the back minds come to the forefront and they have to face that thought again and again in silence. “Please God, bring him home tonight alive”.
Only one time did I catch my Mom doing that. I was just a rebel without a cause clueless teenager when I surprised my Mom, catching her on her knees weeping one day with her elbows resting on the Dad chair. . “Are you ok, Mom?”, I softly asked? She was nearly broken, wiped her eyes, stood up and gathered herself. ” Oh, sometimes I worry if you father will come home alive tonight.” That was the one and only time she ever mentioned that until the day she died. Just caught her in a vulnerable moment when the worry she neatly hid everyday bubbled out of her.
Identifying the assiniated 5 cops as the culprits will result in a mob, mostly fueled by friends and wives and children and parents and families of the Fraternal Order of Police Officers. They need to vent before they, like my Mom, shake it off and compose themselves. Go out there Bonnie and tell them no to have their feelings…tell them to shake it off and compose themselves…which they will, but in their timetable, not yours. Not only should we put a face on “a councilwoman in some spot on the map nobody ever heard of, perhaps you can put a face on the the spouses and children and widows as well.
Mob mentality, fuck yes! Will it last much longer? Nope. In their time, not anybody else’s.
You can find them here, there, everywhere. Start with the Washington Times.

If there is no discouraging word from Reinette’s voters identifying themselves as such, then there is plenty of evidence that her “grossly uninformed assertion” about the police is held by a significant fraction of the Left, here in Nevada City and elsewhere. In short, she is not alone in holding those sentiments but a spokeswoman for many.
To corroborate the broader mindset of the Left about all this, it is instructive to read some leftwing blogs that are totally committed to identifying the Right’s reaction to Reinette as the greater danger to the country while ignoring what set off this national whirlwind.

Men and women who face danger to save the lives of others are heros…regardless of who or where they are. We should all uphold the law in order to have a better society. Those who swear an oath to uphold the law used to be held to a higher standard, and if they didn’t their punishment was more severe than the ordinary citizen breaking the law. I remember a judge chastising someone in law enforcement and explaining the difference.
A corrupt officer endangers the entire force by giving it a bad reputation. It is the duty of the Chief, or Sheriff to make those under his command tow the line. Can you imagine what it would be like in an immoral, corrupt society? There are many areas in America that are terrifying and if it weren’t for our brave, good policemen trying to protect people from the lawless nothing and no one would be safe. I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of the same o same o technique stirring the pot of self destruction. I hope we’ll shape up and change for the better. You’ve probably seen Paul Harvey’s prophetic talk he gave in 1965 describing the path to our nation’s problems.

Oops! My mistake. Here’s Paul Harvey:
    http://toprightnews.com/if-i-were-the-devil-the-prophetic-words-of-paul-harvey-from-1965/
“If I were the devil, I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree—Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first—I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: “Do as you please.” “Do as you please.” To the young, I would whisper, “The Bible is a myth.” I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what is bad is good, and what is good is “square”. And the old, I would teach to pray. I would teach them to pray after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’
And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors on how to lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.
If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches that war that themselves, and nations that war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flame. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, and neglect to discipline emotions—just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.
Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography—soon I could evict God from the courthouse, and then the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.
If I were the devil I’d take from those, and who have, and give to those wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. What do you bet I could get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would question against extremes and hard work, and Patriotism, and moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure.
In other words, if I were to devil I’d keep on doing on what he’s doing. Paul Harvey, good day.”

Every major news outlet has now carried this story across the nation, but ONLY because, as Adora McNeil says on Nevada County News and Information, “Got some real haters in this town . . . had to go crying to the newspapers.” Give the lady some grape Kool Aid Reinette.
I wish Senum would resign and go back to selling her taco and conspiracy theories in the private sector. It would be the best for her, the best for Nevada City, and best for every city employee. It would be impossible for anyone to argue with a straight face that it is in the best interest of anyone for Senum to remain an official spokesperson and face of our community. There is one, and only one, reason she would choose not to resign. Ego.

Ms. McNeil might want to look at the Unions latest on its website, it has the CH 13 video as well as National media coverage including the full original statement that Senum defended and really meant. While she deleted it Friday at 930pm it was too late. Lots of people captured or printed it before the deletion and reposted or emailed the whole thread. As the dark lord of liberal lament land reminds us, the internet changes the way we communicate. 😉
Has anyone heard what time the LE families protest starts in Nevada City tomorrow? I think there are going to be lots of blue outfits, balloons and ribbons for the TV news teams.

I feel that….Obama’s extreme left wacko political talking points speech today before the bodies of the honored fallen at the funeral was beyond unconscionable into the realm of diabolical. Spouting the need for black social programs to every solution offered by the left since the Great Society…he reverted to sounding like the racist is his and became unhinged sounding more like a BLM radical than a president…..all in front of the bodies about to be laid to rest. He had no self control, even at a funeral. The officers had to stay out of respect for the fallen and support the grieving in their hour of need. Then that racist Obama showed his true colors.
I feel that….my outrage was passing and would subside after the slain were laid in their final resting place….and I was feeling it…then that racist demon possessed President showed up. I feel……disbelief….shock…..horror….”you are fucking insane!” waves of emotions all over again. A third term of his policies can not be an option.
Bush went first, heard only 30 seconds, but that was enough. He talked about family, the community of family, the hurt like we lost one of our own members of our family, the pain…..back home stuff. Intimate stuff. Healing stuff.
Libs act like there is no past. The world began today. And today, Obama held up the picture of the future using every failed and destructive tried and utterly failed solution in the playbook. I wish I could think of words much stronger than unconscionable and diabolical to capture that which I am trying to convey.
All this in front of the Honored Fallen and their friends and family and loved ones. A funeral. Then the unhinged egoistical sociopath manic President walks in. Boy, he is getting worse and acting like he is on some street drugs or something. No control. A true sociopath unable to see or feel others’ sorrow and no regrets. I also feel sad.

Yes, you are sad Mr. T. You should heed the words of wise Bonnie McGuire, for whom I have gained immense respect. She’s a rare person- a consistent, authentic Christian, with views untarnished by the dictates of her political leanings.
Mr. T, your 9:17 screed was perfectly crafted in the manner of a typical Duped Drumpster. In fact, millions thought the President’s speech was well composed, compassionate, and a very good start for healing the divides we face. Yes, progressive tend to look to the future, where we learn from mistakes, and always raise the level of love and compassion, justice and equality. The past should be remembered and celebrated on a family level, an intimate level. The families, the survivors need to grieve, for a long time. The happiness, laughter and sadness of nostalgia is a great healer. But progress calls on larger levels, in our policies and priorities, in making America a better place. Its always a work in progress. Progress. Yes, its a necessity.

Lol. All liberal policies disregard the past, trash everything, and begin like this is the first day of creation. Dozer, the end of Obama’s speech was where he finally got around to the fallen after opening with jokes. Jokes that were used to open his act. He is a racist and thrives on the politics of grievance. He is the biggest divider in my lifetime. He peddles grievances. I thought he was going to go full black panther on us……Obama mentioned himself 45 Times in the speech, twice in his opening line. It was all about him.
You judge yourself, Cunette Lips, and Obama by their/your intentions. The rest of the world judges you by your actions.
Hey, even Bush haters are tweeting W’s quotes from today. It’s wasn’t about Bush, imagine that.
Minimize your own glaring deformities and exaggerate the mole on my butt.
Good night, Mr. Dozer. Your President is a diobolical racist lacking any empathy or compassion outside his own little hurts and boo-boos. If he can’t get anything from you, he moves on. A true sociopath. Bet he his feeling great about himself tonight and the applause he took back ringing in his ears. Pathetic.

Spent an hour last night reading Yelp after reading Neil Locke over at Pelline’s Comedy Central.. Mr. Neil asked twice if anyone has seen what they are saying on Yelp.
First, nobody should be saying nasty things about RS’s business unless they have eaten there! That would be “bearing false witness.” It’s one thing to express one’s opinion, it’s quite another to lie about Los Mineros’s food and service. That is something usually reserved for the lefties MO. I have never eaten there, so I cannot/will not touch Yelp and lie by submitting a review, no matter how I feel. That is not being honest.
Principles before Personalities, unlike Hillary who has no principles.
Now, with that said, come on…do you really think you can catch gonorrhea by using the bathroom there. Our your server had scabbies, and the cockroarches are overrunning the place, or there was pubic hair in your entree and a rat found in your burrito. And, like how many people really did have to go to ER after eating there, or how many people really did come down food poisoning. That is not funny and vile.
Look, I feel….that RS should not be anywhere close to weilding power after she her statements and after trashing/ignoring the long held City law/ordinance that all city approved events on the streets should be free of charge. She was aware of that law and then pushed through the Love Food Event Dinner that charged for seating on the City streets….above the law for sure. But it gave us a nice pic of some blogger’s back side and the U Haul used to transport him there. Bottom line….kick her off the Nevada City council. Probably an unpaid position anyway, but lay off her eatery. Make the punishment fit the crime, IMHO.
With all that said, I did like this review found in the trash pile:
‘I recognize how insane this will sound, but Roseville Kaiser has better Mexican food than Los Mineros. Avoid this place at all costs.
Also, I have some problems with any ethnic food place that has an white staff. Cultural appropriation much? I think the owner should look into diversifying her staff. No Mexican place should be lilly white. We are a multi-ethnic family, so we are super sensitive about diversity.”
Ah, the ole diversity for diversity’s sake.

People are actually attacking her restaurant? Well, I guess that happens. I don’t condone that at all. I went through that in 1993. The left came after me for proposing affordable housing project in the Glenbrook basin. They decided I did not even belong in the County and did their best to destroy my business. So, I dn’t like that. I suggest people stop that and concentrate on her Council membership oily.

    “Hello Friends,
I am sending out this letter for those who are interested and coming to speak at special city council meeting being held TONIGHT, 6:30PM at Nevada City City Hall. There will be a resolution passed in support of the local Nevada City and in support of the Dallas police…. this is in response to a Facebook post I made last Friday.
As you can imagine, at this point in time the city expects this to be a public lynching of me…. I will address the crowd in the beginning, but any support you can muster please show up at 6:30pm to voice your support! Also, do know that Hot Summers Nights so parking and getting to city will be a bit challenging.
We are expecting approximately 100 law enforcement and their wives to attend…. There will also be lots of press including CNN, Fox, you name it.
My objective it to apologize to those offended and to find a positive recourse and solution. I would love a hand in this!
Please attend and/or send many people to join.
If you can’t attend, you can send an email to city manager, Mark Prestwich and to have forwarded to the city council members for tonight:

Is somebody feeling the first nips of the wringer? Getting a wee bit warm in the frying pan?
Standing back and reading the comments on numerous news feeds concerning this unwanted and unsolicited delicate matter, a couple stood out. They were from unknown business owners in beautiful downtown Nevada City. The two businesses owners said in essence, “hey, boycott her business all you want, but please don’t boycot Nevada City and hurt my business and my employees and their livihoods. Boycot her, not us!, please, please, please.”
Money talks and bully pucky walks. The other business owners will throw her under the bus in a New York minute to save their own skins. Sunshine Patriots, the lot of them.
It will all end with a big group hug and everybody will leave as good friends. I love happy endings!! All this depends on how much crow she is willing to eat and how much of her soul she is willing to sell, just like Bernie.
Hang in there, RS. Don’t give an inch, do not resign. Fight the good fight and punch back hard. Do not sell your soul to the devil. Don’t let those nasty right wingers win. No surrendering to evil! You spoke the truth!!! Screw everybody else. You are right, it’s all those other members of the marching band that are out of step. March to the sound of your own drummer. I am woman, hear me roar and all that stuff. Punch back hard!
Do Not Resign. Even Dr. Rebane says DO NOT RESIGN! Take it to them, RS. Stand your ground!
Unfortunately, all that mass media hysteria and media outlets will not be around to record or wildly broadcast your group hug and Mea Culpa. They do that kind of thing. It’s so unfair leaving you asking, “Where do I go to get my reputation back?”

From the way she is blasting the town via FaceBook, emails and texts she is FAR more organized than any opposition. Even at that, she is being swamped by those requesting that she go back to selling her taco and don’t include us in her grand vision of making Nevada City one giant cell phone free zone (except for the homeless who should all get tax payer supplied iPhones) where the cops have to raise their hands before going to the bathroom.

Mayor said, I am ashamed of the comments she made, she does not speak for me or anyone on the council, I want her to continue her work as an advocate for the community but if the community want is for you to resign, I wish you would seriously consider that.

All those wives of cops were very compelling. But as I suspected she did what GeorgeR urged her to do. Anyway, ironic that she would allow her name to be on the Resolution. I wonder if the Dallas PD will accept it. Joe Griggs of Robinson Timber said it well.

Her odd comment to the press after the meeting sounds like she was going to see how it played on the news. If that was the case the handwriting is on the wall. Then again her ego could drag the city down a rough road until she can be recalled.
