Alexander Rossi of Nevada City won the Indianapolis classic as a rookie entry starting in the 11th position in the middle of the pack.  It was an unbelievably tactical race that brought Rossi across the finish line first while literally running on vapors that he and his team husbanded in the last few laps of the race.  Home town boy makes good never delivered a better story than our Alexander Rossi standing milk-drenched in the Brick Yard’s Winner’s Circle.  I’m looking forward to cheering him on as he rides down Broad Street to take his well-earned congratulations from all Nevada County residents.

AlexanderRossi

I was introduced to Alexander about ten years ago by his grandfather, my friend, and fellow Rotarian Don Fultz.  Early in his career as a budding race car driver Alexander talked to our Rotary Club several times describing the travails that he was going through to become a world class Formula One driver.  During those visits I had a chance to chat with him more than once about his progress and the support our Rotary was contributing.  He was an impressive young man then, and the years have demonstrated what dedication and training will do.  His racing career has now the imprimatur of having his likeness join the 99 previous greats who adorn the giant silver Borg-Warner trophy.  And we in these foothills will always be proud to point to him as being one of us, but not as proud as is Grandpa Don smiling down on his grandson.

[30may16 update]  Alexander Rossi’s career to date has not been a straight line of acknowledged achievements to his Indy victory.  In fact, he has of late been on the back burner as a “reserve driver” on other racing teams.  To me this aspect of his journey makes his dedication and perseverance an even more significant part of the young man’s character.  He didn’t arrive in the winner’s circle on a bed of roses; here is more from Associated Press

I met Alexander early in his racing career. I did some consulting work for the Rossi Team, copywriting a sales brochure when Alexander was preparing to sell his driving skills to team owners in Europe. Alexander has sustained a laser sharp focus on his end goal to be a winning Formula 1 driver, starting with his early wins as a teenage Go-Cart driver. As a go-cart driver, he was recognized for his special driving talent enabling him to push race cars to the cusp of the vehicles limits. And today he demonstrated the skills needed to milk the last ounce of energy from an empty fuel tank. Congratulations to Alexander and his team.

It is only natural to absorb some of the glow and excitement when living next door to a winner. We in the foothills have been blessed with the likes of Alexander Rossi, California Chrome, Gary Snyder, Roger Hodgson, Gary Snyder, Jerry Brown, Joanna Newsom, and soon, Gavin Newsom.

And the other Clint, Clint Ritchie. How could I forget!! We were close friends for many years until the world lost him to the bottle. We’d spend the mornings driving around his beater pick up with our dogs in the back and a helper tossing flakes of hay to his rescue horses at Happy Horse Ranch in Chicago Park. Then he’d get behind the wheel of his golf cart with a fresh half gallon jug of vodka with two bullion cubes melting on the bottom. He’d drink the jug dry, through a straw, by evening then finish the day with a 12 pack. Next day he would awake at 5:00 am sharp, as bright and full of energy as a chipmunk. Amazing constitution. Here’s a Memorial Day to remembering Clint Ritchie. Maybe I’ll rent Patton and re watch Captain Clint drunk driving his tank across the deserts of Africa then getting kissed on the head by General Patton.

I am thinking a ticker tape parade for Rossi, or Grand Marshall of a parade, or something – maybe he could cruise his race car down Broad St.

jon smith – a friend of mine dug a pond for Clint Richie out at his place a while back. I ended up with a brown Ford dump truck my friend used to haul the dirt away, a cool old partner desk, and a big, rustic, ‘dining room’ table that were auctioned off by the county a few years ago.

BradC- If that “rustic” dining room table could tell stories. . . He brought it up here from Arizona with him. It was an early prop from his years with Days of Our Lives. Many a young starlet graced its planks. In mid conversation between sips, he would abruptly prop his .223 against the table and shoot at ground squirrels that used to dig under his barn. Never mind that he had to shoot through the living room door, across the kitchen and out the kitchen door to reach the barn 50 yards away. Not normally a loud gun, a .223 in a small living room is enough to ring your ears for 10 minutes.

jon smith – haha, my wife will love that story! She was curious about the guy and remembered his name from his soap opera days. We had a yard sale a couple of days ago and I noticed this little cardboard box with an old Pepsi logo sitting on a table. Inside was a red felt pouch with a great old cigarette lighter with a Pepsi logo in great shape. It must have ended up in a yard sale box. My wife said it was in the desk we got from the Richie auction. I grabbed it and said I was shoplifting it from the sale:)

    BradC-
I don’t know of his connections with Pepsi, but he was the Roman Meal Man in the 60’s and 70’s.

I remember he was in a fight with his neighbors and was not a nice man.

    Todd-
You are right. In the last few years of his life he lapsed into dementia, which combined with alcohol, cost him all of his friends, myself included. Very sad.
