Today in the 21mar16 Union columnist and RR reader Mr George Boardman reminds us of the tautology that members of our 99% also avoid accountability. He corroborates this with an anecdote or two, as if any were needed.  Very little thought already reveals that the population which overwhelmingly avoids accountability resides in the 99%.  I think this point could have been made a bit more explicitly to underline Mr Boardman’s ‘No need to be among the 1% to avoid accountability’.

But what I took exception to was his description of “DeVry University, a publicly traded company that specializes in signing up students to loans they may or may not be able to pay back.” The FTC’s jaundiced ruling notwithstanding, this private educational enterprise does not specialize in Mr Boardman’s claimed practice any more than do the hundreds of public colleges and universities across the land.  Unpaid student loans now exceed $1,200,000,000,000 (that’s T like in trillion) and are overwhelmingly owed to government run lenders making it easy for government run colleges that lure students into costly degree programs that teach students skill sets they cannot sell in the labor market (more here and here).  [H/T to Mr Gregory’s 736pm below for the correction.]  The only ones hiring those so victimized are the various agencies and bureaus of our governments where competency in something useful is not a requirement.  Mr Boardman’s singling out a for-profit university for such umbrage is misleading at best, and patronizes our softheaded socialists at worst.

Joel Kotkin, R.C. Hobbs Presidential Fellow and columnist, writes a major piece prognosticating the dismal future of the GOP and Hillary’s potential launch of our own Third Reich. He sees the formation of a third party as a political palliative, but does not seem to understand that political stability requires at least four political parties to span the ideological spectrum.  Nevertheless, the worthwhile read concludes with a view of Hillary’s administration and the Democrat Party dominance –

In this way, the rest of the country will increasingly resemble what we already have in California – a central governing bureaucracy that feels little constrained about expanding its power over every local planning and zoning decision. The federal republic will become increasingly nationalized, dispensing largely with the constitutional division of power.

Centralism, as known well in California, comes naturally to a one-party state. Businesses, particularly large ones, faced with uncontested political power, will fall in line. How many times have I heard California business people, even supposedly powerful ones, tell me they are frustrated with Gov. Jerry Brown’s increasingly draconian rule but sheepishly add that they are too afraid to say anything.

Looking ahead, the only hope lies in a mounting reaction, perhaps manifesting in a new party, to over-reach. As Clinton works to serve her “families,” like public employees, crony capitalists and the academia/media PC police, she could ignite a rebellion not only among the Trump constituency but also many more moderate, suburban voters who find Trump too crude, divisive and unpredictable.

This new movement should be built around the idea that, in the information age, power can, and should, devolve to localities as much as possible. Even Californians prefer local, as opposed to centralized, control. This could spark a widespread populist rebellion which, in 2020, could finally tame the federal Leviathan and allow American politics to return to something the founders may have envisioned.

[update]  George Soros has given Gov Kasich $700K for his campaign.  'What are we to make of that?', he asks with tongue-in-cheek.  Talk about strategic investments that Trump and Cruz should highlight.

[22mar16 update]  George Boardman has restarted his NC Roadkill blog.  I went there to welcome him with – Welcome back to the blogosphere Mr Boardman. Ruminations is proud to post a permanent link to NC Roadkill. gjr – but my comment is still "in moderation" so I thought I'd repeat it here.  Perhaps Mr Boardman is having second thoughts as to what time eaters these blogs are; I hope not.

latest poll show that Kasich would by fat be the strongest Repub Candidate.
Kasich, Sanders Trail In Primaries, Lead In November, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds; Voters Blame Trump And Protesters For Violence
Matched up against Trump and Cruz, both Clinton and Sanders lead by as much as 14 points, as is the case of Sanders’ lead in a hypothetical race with Trump. On the other hand, Kasich outperformed both Democrats when tested head-to-head, leading Clinton 47 percent to 39 percent and Sanders 45 percent to 44 percent.

They don’t seem to care Paul. The data is overwhelming that the US general electorate is moderate to the core, yet the far right forges on to self imposed Loser status. Sounds fine with me, given the alternative..

Ths polls obviously show the Pubs losing the middles which always carry the election. That and an effective get out the vote for loyalists.

enough about Libertarians, my guess is that as a member, they’re whatever you want them to be. Everyone has their own particular tic for things they’d like to change the rule set on. If Paul wants to smoke dope, but be a Democrat otherwise, that’s cool (I keed, I keed). If someone comes up with a Libertarian ‘bible’, I’ll check it out and speak less out of ignorance.
I agree that Trump isn’t ‘far right’ at all. The fault lines for politics are in the middle of being reset, and ‘Trumpism’, whatever that is, hasn’t laid out clean new boundaries yet.
I’d say that, as usual, the smart money is on the establishment. For an insurrection to be successful, you’d typically need an out-of-power elite on your side, or at least a large civil war within the elite. I’m not seeing that here.

Paul, the crowd you might be running with are good people all in all, by far. Great people. However, people of the non-affiliated crowd living in the Berekely of the Foothills (God’s Country) have a big dilemma on your hands. In fact, we all (expect moi) have the same problem:
Come the general, your side wants a good alternative (anybody but Trump) to My Gal. You guys are just salivating for us to present to you a nice palatable candidate so you won’t be stuck with Hillary. You would drop her like a hot potato in a New York minute.
What to do, oh what to do? You cannot bring yourself to vote for My Gal and you can’t even consider voting for The Donald. And you don’t want to waste your vote. Oh, that’s called being between a rock and a hard place. I bet when you finally vote, you run outside and start ramming your finger down your throat a few hundred times.
Why can’t things in life be all tidy like? I feel your pain.

    Something to ponder:
A lot of people have stated that they won’t vote for Trump if
    he’s the eventual nominee.
I just want to put something into perspective:
Justice Scalia’s seat is vacant. Ginsberg is 82 years old, Kennedy is 79,
Breyer is 77, and Thomas is 67. Nowadays, the data shows that the average
age of a Supreme Court retirement or death occurs after 75.
These are 5 vacancies that will likely come up over the next 4-8 years. The
next President will have the power to potentially create a 7-2 Supreme Court
    skewed in their ideology.
Think about that … 7-2. If the next President appoints 5 young justices,
it will guarantee control of the Supreme Court for an entire generation. And
7-2 decisions will hold up much more over time than 5-4 decisions which are
deemed to be lacking in mandate.
Hillary has made it clear she will use the Supreme Court to go after the 2nd
Amendment. She has literally said that the Supreme Court was wrong in its
Heller decision and that the Court should overturn and remove the individual
right to keep and bear arms. Period.
Everyone declaring that they won’t vote for a particular candidate, if he
turns out to be the GOP nominee, please realize this: If Hillary Clinton
wins and thus gets to make these appointments, you surely will never see
another Conservative victory at the Supreme Court for the rest of your life.

We are going to vote whoever is the Republican Candidate.

BillT 925pm – Good link Mr Tozer. Everyone who has the ability to reason knows that fascism and socialism are just two -isms that are firmly ensconced under the umbrella of collectivism, i.e. leftist thought and ideology. As Thomas Sowell points our, both were so correctly identified before Stalin’s international communism ran into national socialism. It was then that our communists started calling fascism a ‘right wing’ ideology, and that became the preferred weapon of leftist media and education to paint all opponents of collectivism, especially American conservatives and libertarians.
The local looney Left thinks these notions were first introduced on RR.

“Yoga, the Buddhist practice of mindful stretching, is under attack everywhere from people on the left who claim it amounts to cultural appropriation. The student-government at a Canadian university successfully forced an instructor to cancel a free yoga class for disabled students, and a Native American activist convinced a county government to shut down a Florida woman’s private yoga practice (she didn’t have the right permit).”

rlcrabb 618pm – So you are among those who see national socialists as right wingers fighting international socialists. No one argues that national socialists didn’t take corporatism to an extreme, but that extreme was simply another version of collectivism.
You seem to offer no substance to your implication (accusation?) that what I and mine believe has autocratic collectivism as its terminus. I’ll give you one better, you give no shred of evidence that any of us on the Right support any steps toward bigger government, higher taxes, corporate welfare, government union schools, gratuitous redistribution of wealth, punishment of enterprise, prohibition of free speech, global governance, central planning and control, constricting private ownership and use of guns, weakening property rights, and eliminating liberties. All of these are the demonstrated history, accomplishments, and current efforts of the Left, the liberals, the socialists, the communists, and any other label you care to hang on the collectivists.
While the Democrats have delivered on their ill-conceived promises, I cannot say the same for high-sounding conservatarian promises of the Republicans. But your cursing ‘a plague on both your houses’ rings hollow. Without substance (e.g. no one knows your middle of the road credo), you sound a lot like Donald J. Trump in your pronouncements.
