Today in the 21mar16 Union columnist and RR reader Mr George Boardman reminds us of the tautology that members of our 99% also avoid accountability. He corroborates this with an anecdote or two, as if any were needed.  Very little thought already reveals that the population which overwhelmingly avoids accountability resides in the 99%.  I think this point could have been made a bit more explicitly to underline Mr Boardman’s ‘No need to be among the 1% to avoid accountability’.

But what I took exception to was his description of “DeVry University, a publicly traded company that specializes in signing up students to loans they may or may not be able to pay back.” The FTC’s jaundiced ruling notwithstanding, this private educational enterprise does not specialize in Mr Boardman’s claimed practice any more than do the hundreds of public colleges and universities across the land.  Unpaid student loans now exceed $1,200,000,000,000 (that’s T like in trillion) and are overwhelmingly owed to government run lenders making it easy for government run colleges that lure students into costly degree programs that teach students skill sets they cannot sell in the labor market (more here and here).  [H/T to Mr Gregory’s 736pm below for the correction.]  The only ones hiring those so victimized are the various agencies and bureaus of our governments where competency in something useful is not a requirement.  Mr Boardman’s singling out a for-profit university for such umbrage is misleading at best, and patronizes our softheaded socialists at worst.

Joel Kotkin, R.C. Hobbs Presidential Fellow and columnist, writes a major piece prognosticating the dismal future of the GOP and Hillary’s potential launch of our own Third Reich. He sees the formation of a third party as a political palliative, but does not seem to understand that political stability requires at least four political parties to span the ideological spectrum.  Nevertheless, the worthwhile read concludes with a view of Hillary’s administration and the Democrat Party dominance –

In this way, the rest of the country will increasingly resemble what we already have in California – a central governing bureaucracy that feels little constrained about expanding its power over every local planning and zoning decision. The federal republic will become increasingly nationalized, dispensing largely with the constitutional division of power.

Centralism, as known well in California, comes naturally to a one-party state. Businesses, particularly large ones, faced with uncontested political power, will fall in line. How many times have I heard California business people, even supposedly powerful ones, tell me they are frustrated with Gov. Jerry Brown’s increasingly draconian rule but sheepishly add that they are too afraid to say anything.

Looking ahead, the only hope lies in a mounting reaction, perhaps manifesting in a new party, to over-reach. As Clinton works to serve her “families,” like public employees, crony capitalists and the academia/media PC police, she could ignite a rebellion not only among the Trump constituency but also many more moderate, suburban voters who find Trump too crude, divisive and unpredictable.

This new movement should be built around the idea that, in the information age, power can, and should, devolve to localities as much as possible. Even Californians prefer local, as opposed to centralized, control. This could spark a widespread populist rebellion which, in 2020, could finally tame the federal Leviathan and allow American politics to return to something the founders may have envisioned.

[update]  George Soros has given Gov Kasich $700K for his campaign.  'What are we to make of that?', he asks with tongue-in-cheek.  Talk about strategic investments that Trump and Cruz should highlight.

[22mar16 update]  George Boardman has restarted his NC Roadkill blog.  I went there to welcome him with – Welcome back to the blogosphere Mr Boardman. Ruminations is proud to post a permanent link to NC Roadkill. gjr – but my comment is still "in moderation" so I thought I'd repeat it here.  Perhaps Mr Boardman is having second thoughts as to what time eaters these blogs are; I hope not.

Why would I single out DeVry University when there are so many transgressors to choose from? Let me count the ways:
–DeVry is currently being sued by the Federal Trade Commission for deceiving students with claims that 90 percent got jobs in their fields within six months of graduation. Those “good” jobs include people with management degrees working as hospital volunteers and restaurant servers.
–About 77 percent of people enrolled at DeVry are paying with student loans, compared to 45 percent at a California public university.
–DeVry students leave school with debt that’s triple that of students in California public universities.
I’m well aware that way too many students are loading up on debt in pursuit of degrees of dubious value, but a lot of that debt comes wasted time changing majors and an unwillingness to work part-time instead of borrowing money. They don’t learn until later that there’s a price to be paid for sloth and indecisiveness.
We actually saved money to pay for our daughter’s undergraduate education, but she had to pay for her graduate studies. She paid off her loan less than 6 years after she earned her masters.

I too was a little taken back by Mr. Boardman’s claim: “DeVry University, a publicly traded company that specializes in signing up students to loans they may or may not be able to pay back.”
When I was in Thailand for 14 months in the mid-1970s, I took a DeVry University Electronics Course, refreshing my electronic skill sets and found them to be a highly professional organization. I also took Calculus I and II from Chapman University, rather than Ball Room Dancing.
Then, I pondered the trillion dollars of student loans on the government books and concluded it took more than DeVry University to run up that un-payable bill. And for the most part, a bill for University degrees that will not produce a job. As one young lady blogged recently “Two College Degrees Later, I Was Still Picking Kale For Rich People.” With her two journalism degrees, the only job she could find was a grocery picker in Whole Foods Market.

Well, just like clockwork, Hillary is on a sprint to the middle. She hugged Obama nice and tight when she needed him to swamp Bernie, but now O is toxic. Go figure. Flighty woman My Gal is. Hey, President Clinton, wasn’t my gal in the Administration during 4 of those 7 years? You are losing it, My Man from Hope.

Now to the topic. If the Left believes that Government is the solution to all your problems today and tomorrow, it’s kinda hard to all jjoin together for a game of Hop Scotch and jump rope. The Right is in rebellion or revolution, take your pick. A peaceful takeover all things considered.
The skirmishes on the Left ain’t even close to a rebellion. Perhaps a focused and limited insurrection. The fix is in on the Left per usual. Watched a clip of DNC Debbie (Hillary’s co-campaign chairette last time around) say that the Superdelagates are beholden to no one. Yep, a jaw dropper where the rubber mets the road. No rebellion will be totalerated by the Good Peoples’ Party of the left. Have no idea where Bernie’s kids will go. I have a feeling some of Bill Clinton’s New Democrats will leave his lovely wife and pick up the torches and pitchforks and join the fun on the Right.
Local control or some loqcal control, or more local control is the question.
Don’t see it coming with Hillary. She likes everything in a nice neat submissive order with no surprises.
Now, on the Right, the fruit is ripe for the picking for more local control. However, I hold out little hope for less government. I’ll settle for anemic growth in Big Bro.

Obama is souring in the polls right now and will be a major player in the fall elections once the Bernie problem is taken care of. Hillary will get elected and will end up supporting the TPP after a few minor tweaks.
Too bad the Pubbers populist passion didn’t settle on a Libertarian leaning candidate. Might have won my vote. Let the games begin. This year it’s really going to be fun to watch.

A 49-year-old Western Pennsylvania police officer, who spent 28 years as a registered Democrat, decided he’d had enough last week.
He stood up from breakfast at a local diner, climbed a flight of stairs at the county office building, explained his intentions to a clerk – and, when he left, was for the first time in his adult life a registered Republican.
“This gives me a voice in the upcoming primary,” he said, citing strident Democrat municipal politics as the reason to withhold his name.
“It’s not like I wasn’t going to vote Republican in the general election anyway. I’ve generally voted conservative for the past 15 years, and the only reason I never changed was because I wanted the ability to vote in local elections” for mayor or city council, which typically are decided in the Democrats’ primaries and not in general elections.
He is not alone. Nearly 59,000 registered Pennsylvania Democrats have changed their voter registration since January.

GeorgeB 336pm – As I said, the “FTC’s jaundiced ruling notwithstanding” it is more than curious that the FTC has not gone after the hundreds of public colleges and universities whose graduates have the overwhelming amount of unpaid and unpayable debt. And therefore I find your choosing an outfit like DeVry, that is a comparative flyspeck on the wall, to chastise in the face of $1.2T bamboozled by the politically correct educational institutions selling worthless degrees that dot the landscape.
Mr Boardman, your point would have made strong sense had you picked the real culprits that have been boosting tuitions for decades with every added government subsidy to students – there is where the real fraud has been committed, and you chose to ignore it. Nevertheless, it is your right to tell it like you see it, and it’s my job to try to figure out how you see it and bring it to these pages. I very much look forward to your next column, as always.

Paul, Paul, Paul. Yes, I noticed a small trend bounce for Obama. He seems to hit his previous highs. Give it time and see if this trend flatlines or soars or sours. 🙂
55% is magic number for Obama’s thumbs up numbers. Yes, he is a player in this election, all the more since Hillary is running as O’s 3rd term and she wants us to look at her and see Obama’s twin. That is, until she sent Billy Bubba out yesterday to float that trial ballon. I wish she would make up her mind. Is she for O, or is she a’gin him? That is where O’s numbers can help or hurt her…..but it’s only March and 2016 may be an anomaly. Maybe not. Either way, stick a fork in that ugly coughing last gasping pig. She is so toxic that the only thing she is good for is making bacon seeds to sow among the wild flowers.

Soaring is a relative term. He (Obama) is at the highest point in the Gallop daily polls since April 2013. He’s up 16 points in the Fox poll since Nov 2015. I think Obama looks good compared Hillary and Trump, the likely nominees.

Sleeper also made a point about the so-called elites who look down their noses at Trump supporters: “We’ve used our classism to condemn their racism…without understanding that we were contributing to the sense of alienation and dispossession with our own disdain.”

How else can you explain it? Care to compare him to Bush ll at this stage of his term or Bush I ? No comparing Obama to Clinton who was way off the charts despite his impeachment.

I think far too many folks blow off or disregard the findings stated in Emeries 3.21.16. Despite George Rebane’s claim in mid February that Trump had hit ceiling and was on his way back to earth, Trumps numbers continue to rise and solidify across the spectrum. With either Tump or Hillary in the white House we WILL have a democratic senate. Derrick Garland will be pulled from consideration for a candidate far more to the left. The Repubs are demonstrating yet another level of misunderstanding tactics for strategy by blocking Garland. What are the right wing’s long option come 2017 -2019???

The Pub mainstream put all their chips on Bush III ignoring the repercussion of the family stain on his resume. They wouldn’t give a glance to such qualified conservatives as Lindsey Graham or John Kasich or even Gov Perry who were qualified seasoned politico’s. In addition to
Bush they were flirting with the Twin Twerps, Rubio and Cruz who is still standing. Too late now. A Trump extraction would be very ugly and in the words of the Candidate himself lead to riots that you won’t be able to pin on Bernie. The populists have the taste of blood and are willing to dogfight it out in the public arena.
Hillary should have been a easy target but somehow the Pubs blew it and here we are. A missed chance for a Libertarian but Rand Paul was unable to light the fire like his dad and Gary Johnson long ago flew the coup seeing the writing on the wall that Libertarians were really not welcome in the repub party.

Perhaps that’s unfair, it’s reasonable to assume he says what he means. Voting Team L might include:
. Being against the concept of a minimum wage, ability to fire at will for any reason
. No taxes for schools (parents control all spending)
. No requirement for health insurance (I assume this might also mean that there’s no free public healthcare).
. No rent control, probably no zoning law
. No government laws on firearm ownership at all
. No regulations on banks except for antifraud
    . Abolish social security
. No restrictions on immigration (ie. completely open borders), no restrictions on capital movement across boundaries
    etc.
It ain’t just making smoking dope legal.
These are all points that can be argued but if Paul Emery says he’s for it, I’m willing to believe him.

    Actually I’m a Green-Libertarian. I’ll explain later.
Rather than engage in a ramdom sampling of what some consider Libertarian thought I suggest you read The Libertarian Mind: A Manifesto for Freedom by David Boaz of the Cato Institute
    Here’s a synopsis
A revised, updated, and retitled edition of David Boaz’s classic book Libertarianism: A Primer, which was praised as uniting “history, philosophy, economics and law—spiced with just the right anecdotes—to bring alive a vital tradition of American political thought that deserves to be honored today” (Richard A. Epstein, University of Chicago).
Libertarianism—the philosophy of personal and economic freedom—has deep roots in Western civilization and in American history, and it’s growing stronger. Two long wars, chronic deficits, the financial crisis, the costly drug war, the campaigns of Ron Paul and Rand Paul, the growth of executive power under Presidents Bush and Obama, and the revelations about NSA abuses have pushed millions more Americans in a libertarian direction. Libertarianism: A Primer, by David Boaz, the longtime executive vice president of the Cato Institute, continues to be the best available guide to the history, ideas, and growth of this increasingly important political movement—and now it has been updated throughout and with a new title: The Libertarian Mind.
Boaz has updated the book with new information on the threat of government surveillance; the policies that led up to and stemmed from the 2008 financial crisis; corruption in Washington; and the unsustainable welfare state. The Libertarian Mind is the ultimate resource for the current, burgeoning libertarian movement.
    Start there and we’ll talk.

Boy, Trump took Az. That wasn’t even close. What surprised me is there is no cross over voting in Az. Can only vote in R or D primary (opps, forgot the Green Wienies) if you are a registered D or R or Green. No independents are allowed to vote in the party primaries (except local and state wide elections), so it was a straight up R win for Trump. Hmm.
Bernie campaigned hard at Northern Arizona U. The students registered on line, but did not check party preference and were automatically defaulted to Independent per state law. The wild and crazy Bernie’s kids showed up and were not allowed to cast a ballot. No Independents, no open primary. Too funny. They just did not get it. It’s not fair!
Now onto Utah. If somebody does not get 50%, the delegates are divvied up. If somebody gets 50%, then it’s winner takes all. The Estabishment’s hope and plan is to get 50% for just one non-Trump guy to stop The Donald. Wait and see. Oh, how thrilling.

“Can you give me a ” policy manifesto” of what it is to be a Republican?”
A bit of googling generates this:
    https://prod-static-ngop-pbl.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/2012GOPPlatform.pdf
Although it looks like the rank and file of Republican voters are pivoting into a different stated belief system. For all I know, they never believed in much of what the party nomenklatura ever stated as goals. Honestly, that wouldn’t surprise me a bit.
US political parties always struck me as being kind of similar to high evolved religions (Catholicism for example). There’s a complex cloud of words and philosophy that have been generated by a few thinkers in the organization and scads of followers who go along with the program due to history and community. At the bottom of the pyramid, it’s all about symbols and mass psychology.
Top down design of models of group behavior never struck me as a rich vein to follow. It could well be more fruitful to look at existing, long term, communities and really think about what makes them successful. Libertarianism (or something like it), for example, might better be examined as something that was the normal state of humans for most of history. That leaves plenty of fodder for thinking about how a lack of centralized state functions (this would be true even in Roman Europe) changes everyday reality for your average Joe.

Rebane Doctrine – A stable political structure would consist of at least four parties ranging from blatantly socialist/communist, center-left (old Dems), center-right (old Repubs), conservetarian (conservative/libertarian). More parties could be added to serve special ideological interests. Coalition governments would become the rule.

DbP seems to be confusing libertarianism with anarchy or oligarchy. I don’t think anything like libertarianism (or liberalism as it was originally called) as a political organizing principle was even considered before the likes of Adam Smith and John Locke.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most widely read and powerful small-l libertarian document ever drafted, and I doubt it could have been written before the 18th century.

Part deux in this mornings “kiss of death” moment.

“Ted and wife Heidi brag about being first ‘Bush marriage’…”

Jeez Ted…..in this tumultuous election year you and the missus oughta learn to shut up about certain things.

I don’t believe that I am, although at some point it all becomes a matter of terminology about squishy subjects (I did not have sexual relations with that woman).
The Romans, either Republic or Principate (just to pick an example at random, not to specifically prove a point) obviously didn’t provide anarchy…what human society does really?…but also provided very little in the way of strong infrastructure from the ruling classes.
If you think about stated Libertarian goals, at least looking at the various manifestos I can find, living in Gaul wasn’t so different. No .gov oversight on education, super low taxes, no rules favoring religion (or at least rarely), no rules on weapons, freedom of using private property in whatever way you wish, no rules on drugs/medicine/etc. Aside from slavery, staying out of the way of the very powerful, and the odd band of brigands (a problem in any Libertarian society I would imagine), it’s a darned free society. Practically any rules for living would come from your neighbors. A good side question is whether a country can be considered to have an oligarchy when they do very little actual administration or ruling.
I don’t doubt that there’s a Libertarian intelligentsia that has invented a fully baked recipe that I’m ignorant of. It isn’t like a billion people practicing some form of communism read Das Kapital. I probably should find some sort of bible of the movement and flip through it, although given the fringieness of the thing, it’ll probably get pushed into the Scientology stack. Hopefully there’s no Xenu in there somewhere.
In any case, the disconnect between ‘thought leaders’ and thought followers in political movements seems quite large. It seems acceptable to me that the Republican rank and file, or any other brand, are in favor of a philosophy they might disagree with and whose nominal leaders find them a bit silly.
