[Here is what Joe Biden had to say about filling SCOTUS vacancies. And the record here shows that no liberal has explained why this time is so different that the Senate should not continue to follow the advice of our VP and several of his prominent Democrat colleagues. We expected crickets, and they have spoken. gjr]

Paul, I believe your repeating the question over and over belies your claim of benign scholarly interest; it smells like just another Paul Emery the amateur boxer jab.
I’ve already written I wouldn’t write what you’re insisting I accept or reject. Call that a rejection if that makes you feel better.LikeLike
-
jon smith, so you accept argumentum ad vericuniam as valid?
Institutions aren’t scientists, and none of those institutions actually polled their members who have expertise in atmospheric physics or meteorology (if any) before saluting the IPCC flag as it was run up the flagpole. It was the leadership of those groups who were essentially saying, yes, we’d love to facilitate the research you want to fund.LikeLike
-
jons 339pm – “The same folks who …” Mr smith, you have absolutely no evidence to support that claim. I will be the first in that scoffers’ line and I share none of the beliefs which comfortably decorate your worldview. That you cannot enter this discussion with anything beyond such progressive pabulum consigns you to the roll of True Believers in scientism.

Paul, even if you and the alarmists are right about climate sensitivity to CO2, does global warming have the potential to make the world uninhabitable? The current 2c targets is well within the +/- 2c natural variability, so the answer is no!
A 2c warmer world, even a 4c warmer world, would still be habitable, perhaps more than habitable; life would likely be far more abundant, than todayโs world according to geological history.
The Cretaceous Period, which lasted for 80 million years, and ended 66 million years ago by a meteor impact, had a CO2 level of around 1700ppm, and was it was 4c hotter than todayโs world. The dinosaurs didnโt eke out an existence in a barren scorching desert โ their world was a lush, tropical world of jungles, giant trees, and superabundant life. So the risk that the Earth will become uninhabitable in the next few centuries, due to anthropogenic CO2, is essentially zero.
We are more vulnerable to a meteor impact like the one that killed the dinosaurs than we are from anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The Planet is about to experience some global cooling, part of the natural variability cycle. So, the answer to your question is no action needed, carry-on with life your life. . .
H/T to Anthony for the climate history.LikeLike

GR 3:39 – I am a true believer in scientism. No one consigned me to that roll. I am somewhat dumbstruck that a person of your education would thumb their nose at someone who puts facts in front of faith. I didn’t see many scientists praying Armstrong to the moon. I haven’t seen many evangelists winning the lottery through divine intervention.
To state that I have “no evidence to support that claim” suggests you didn’t quite understatnd what I wrote. Google “faith, fallacy, Noah” to get 105,000 hits that probably do better than I to support my claim that Noah did the impossible. The Christian right as a group are the most convinced that AGW is a conspiracy. Most, as reflected by James Inhofe believe that only God can affect the climate and that any human involvement is heresy.LikeLike

re jons 505pm – Here is an example of how we talk past each other. Mr smith appears to have no idea how to connect my 423pm to his 339pm (which he mislabeled to me). I have no idea of Mr smith’s science credentials, but we do have a robust idea about his ability to follow a conversation logically through his efforts here. His ready acceptance and faith in scientism (instead of science) is understandable. As noted in my response to Mr Paul Hauck, Scientism – the misuse of science-like arguments to prop up unfounded propositions, policies, and propaganda. Adherents of scientism subscribe to neither Occam nor falsifiability.

“Scientism is belief in the universal applicability of the scientific method and approach.” It seems like a pretty succinct definition that you have managed to coin into your own verbiage like your word “conservatism.”
You zig when I zag so let’s put down the sparring gloves and actually have a conversation. Two simple questions that we don’t expect you to answer directly. Suprise us:
1. Do you believe that only God can effect our climate?
2. Do you believe that Noah got every living creature onto his boat?LikeLike

Well, it will be cooler up north than here, if you follow the alarmists logic out to its natural conclusion. I been hearing a lot of talk about moving to Camada. Is it to escape the man made Global Warming, is it Wally?
Gee Beaver, what kind of nutty question is that? Of course it is.

jons 622pm – Who’s the “us”? My credo is published on this blog and supplemented by years of essays that spell out my cosmology and belief system. You are a total mystery, and not a very convincing conversation partner. My definition of ‘scientism’ is one shared by the likes of neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin. No scientist believes that science can encompass all that humans can know. Every notable scientist has written about the limits of science, limits which we are still far from having reached. Your first question is imbecilic, the second one doubles down on the first.

“I then wil classify you as an agnostic on the matter with no firm conclusion.” Paul 427
Yes, agnostic in exactly the same way Lindzen is agnostic, but the problem was primarily in the exceedlingly poor statement you crafted. What kind of “global warming” are you referring to? What “business as usual” did you mean, exactly? What are the bounds of “no concern”? And then all three must be true in order for the statement to be true.
You read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, no? Your question was as asking the Great Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything was to the poor computer who did its best to answer the question.
I’m guessing you didn’t actually read the Lindzen link I posted and I’m guessing you never bothered to read or listen the IntellegenceSquared debate on the question, “Global warming is not a crisis”. Lindzen, the now late Michael Crichton and Philip Stott almost literally wiped the floor with an alarmist team headed by Gavin Schmidt the now Director of the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS), James Hansen’s old job, and boss at the misnamed RealClimate website. Schmidt blew it so badly the Manhattan audience (an educated guess is that they were primarily Jewish left-liberal) actually gave ol’Gavin a hearty Bronx cheer when he blamed them for not accepting his arguments.
Since then he’s avoided actually discussing the issue with the Lindzens of the world, not wanting his prestige to rub off on the unworthy (and yes, he’s as much as said that as he has refused to be on camera with the likes of Roy Spencer, PhD one of the principals working with the UAH satellite data set… that’s about nine years of avoiding public confrontations with scientists who don’t agree with him.
Here’s the debate, it’s worth investigating. It was carried on both PBS and NPR.

Thank you for your honesty and willingness to communicate Scott. We probably disagree on many topics but at least we have a starting point. I agree with you on both points and though I believe humans can effect climate change, in my limited understanding of the subject, I think our effect to date has been quite minimal if at all.
GR, as predicted, “answered” my extremely simple but telling questions with, “Your first question is imbecilic, the second one doubles down on the first.”
In the first week of debate 101 this is taught as a pivot response. It is used to deflect a question without committing to a position. It is an insecure, defensive posture that both Hillary Clinton and Mr. Rebane have perfected. Unfortunately for them, to a learned listener the non-answer is more telling than an honest one.LikeLike
-
JS, both those “questions” of yours are variations on “Are you a lunatic?”.
Rebane has real degrees in two real sciences, physics and systems engineering. To challenge him with a “can only god determine the weather?” question truly is imbecilic.
I think it was Einstein who once challenged a quantum mechanical interpretation with the exclamation “God does not roll dice!” but I think everyone now agrees that God chooses to roll dice with the best of them and is content with not getting his or her hands dirty with a lot of heavy lifting, at least when anyone is looking.LikeLike

re jons 1018pm – For the interested reader. Mr smith’s questions are as characterized by Mr Goodknight’s 1107pm. Were he to be really interested in my cosmology, he would have read my credo and other divers essays in these pages like ‘Does God Watch Paint Dry?’ which directly talks to what appear to be his very simplistic and fundamental views of God.
And my training in engineering and the sciences include a BS Physics, MS Engineering (Control & Estimation Theory), and PhD Engineering (dual fields Dynamic Systems and Computer Science). I am a Registered Professional Engineer (Control Systems) in California. More in my bio. I am a Christian, although some Christians find that hard to accept.
The denigration of climate skeptics by people innocent of the fundamentals like Mr smith should be opposed by all who understand the motivation behind the managed for the masses hysteria of ‘climate change’.LikeLike
-
My good jon smith – Just because I answered the questions doesn’t mean I don’t agree with GR and Greg about the inanity of the questions as they relate to AGW. However many animals were or weren’t loaded onto a home made barge and my belief or non belief in such transport of said livestock has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion at hand. I notice your polite reply switched gears from God being the sole modifier of climate to your statement that humans can affect the climate. Those are 2 different kettle of fish.
I’m no scientist and have only a basic understanding of the basic theory of AGW but I know a rat when I see one. I’m old enough and have a good enough memory to know this hysteria about mankind causing the earth’s climate to become inhospitable to humans and most living things to be simply untrue. The d-days for predictions of doom made by the experts have come and gone like the autumn leaves over the decades. We’ve gone past the ‘point of no return’ so many times it would seem to be an embarrassment for the true believers. But like all religious fanatics, the facts make no never-mind and it’s onwards and upwards with fresh predictions of horror and new lines in the sand that must not be crossed at our certain peril.
I notice that all of the prescriptions for correcting the sins of humans involve me getting my wallet hosed and money being transferred to certain other parties who, for the most part, already have far more wealth than I do. Funny that. And CO2 being called a ‘pollutant’? What’s next, oxygen?
By now, the game has truly been called with many of the leaders of this trillion dollar scam being honest about the real intentions here. It’s the latest ploy by the collectivists to take down capitalism and free enterprise, not to mention our liberties and rights.
They are proudly and openly proclaiming it to be so.
Simply mocking the religious beliefs of others does nothing to advance our discussion of AGW.
Snake handlers and folks depicting humans saddling up dinosaurs may be amusing and even unsettling to others but the rubes doing all of this aren’t crawling into my bank account and passing restrictive laws about what I can and can’t do.LikeLike

Jon Smith and Paul Emory are global warming alarmist, for them and their favorite AGW scientists almost everything is negotiable.
“More snow? Less snow? No problem! No matter what happens, they tweak their models and pretend that they saw it coming all along. There is only one constant, one fixed star amid the modelsโ constant fluidity: the need for government control over the worldโs economies. This is why governments pay billions to the climate alarmists, and are utterly indifferent to their laughable record of failed predictions. Climate alarmism has nothing to do with science.”

Don B, Feb 29, 8;32pm
Don it’s not the growers who are suing the County this time, it’s the parents of a child who is likely to die because of their actions (or lack of them). While I certainly support ther action, it was not initiated by us.
The response from the Rep Women truly lacks compassion. I presume some of them are mothers too? t kills me when supporters say that patients can still grow their medicine. hat do any of you know about the medical needs of any patient? What do you know about the amount of raw material it takes to make a tincture? What do you know about the light spectrum needed to grow high CBD strains? I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.LikeLike
-
PatriciaS 234pm – Patricia, do you think that there are enough MMJ users in the county (the state?) to attract bigger companies to start making and marketing the versions of MMJ that are most useful to patients? The argument seems to be that ‘homemade’ MMJ will be much cheaper and more available after our county arrives a workable policy with private growers. Is there really any evidence for that? I don’t know, but would like to become knowledgeable about the economics of MMJ.

George, I’m sorry you didn’t attend the Tea Party event this past weekend where we did a presentation on what is at stake in the move to ban cannabis in NC. We are adamantly against the “big boys” coming in and taking over our industry. They do not have the patient’s best interest in mind, only massive profits.
I’m not sure that your question gets to the heart of the matter, but it is certainly a big consideration. The County maintains that patients can grow enough medicine indoors, but I’d like to know how they came to this conclusion
. They are not doctors and have NO knowledge of what a patient needs – and it’s not “one size, fits all.”LikeLike
-
PatriciaS 508pm – If the “big boys” are interested only in massive profits from MMJ, then would they not have to provide effective product for patients? If not, then ‘smaller boys’ would enter to scoop up that segment of the market, that’s how capitalism works. Am I missing something?

The “big boys” will more than likely service the recreational markets. There are some big operators moving in who sell “medical” CBD, but because supplis are so low, they are importing the material from China where it comes from recycled building material sludge.
