Corporatism – when government has less to sell, there are fewer buyers.

[Boehner's swansong highlights the problems conservatives have had with the man for some time now.  There doesn't seem to be a hill worth dying on in his political geography.  Can some cleverer minds remind us what now the congressional Republicans have to bargain with a rogue hard left Executive branch once they have forfeited the power of the purse which the Constitution specifically reserved for them and them alone?  gjr]

PaulE 1055am – I think you’re jerking around your fellow readers. All here know that America’s foreign aid comes in two flavors – alms for the destitute, payments to maintain geo-strategic alliances. That countries like Israel, Egypt, Pakistan, … are of the latter kind is not a secret. In international affairs ‘friendships’ are pro quid quo affairs, which I bet you knew (at least I give you credit for knowing). Israel (and Egypt) are our gambits to maintain the balance of Mideast and north African power against the hegemonic designs of both Iran and Turkey.
fish 1105am – my best guess about Ben’s lengthy diatribe is that all those corporations violated his moral standards regarding their financial dealings. That they did not violate any laws is beside the point in Mr Emery’s world, for there he exhorts us all to reach for a higher bar 😉

Paul Emery 10:55 AM the answer is by GeorgeR’s 11:34 AM.
What fascinates me about Ben Emery’s “tax” expose’ is he never lists all those “non-profits” that get those hundreds of billions. All those eco groups that never seem to be scrutinized. The eco “do-gooders” and the eco outraged are yapping about the oil companies. Lately here we now see the expenditure of hard earned tax money to study “salmon” returning to places they never were. A half million bucks or so. So, while the government is putting the thumb screws to the people working hard and paying taxes, under threat of the gun of course, they take that money and give to these far left eco warriors. All the money goes to staff, a staff of leftwingers complaining about subsidies to oil companies (that really don’t exist) all the while these eco warriors would be on the unemployment lines as holding degrees in something that is totally subsized BS! America, you gotta love it!

So Todd what you propose is to cut off assistance that “alms for the destitute”, to quote George. that would mean food, medical assistqnce, clean water, etc. That money would be shifted to providing for our infrastructure. Am I correct in this assumption. If notcan you elaborate on what you said with specifics.

“You guys seem to be fine when it comes to the wealthy and big business not paying their taxes. ”
After a quick look at the income statements for Apple, Chevron, Pfizer, and Lockheed, I can’t say that I’m very outraged at the numbers. In any case, earnings passed on to stockholders just get taxed at that point (and aren’t deductible as I remember, go figure).
The whole argument just makes me tired, so I’ll go read a book or something.

    “oil and gas subsidies”
Off the top of my head I can think of …low income energy subsidies…some sort of tax break for domestic manufacturing generally…a bunch of rules for asset depreciation given to mining and oil firms.
When you get right down to it, probably the best thing to do is simply to look at income tax amounts as a percentage of the top line sales for Big Oil vs. other large companies. At least companies that have similarly high levels of capital investment.
If Chevron’s tax bill is a bunch lower than Intel, Safeway, Walmart, Pfizer, etc., it seems to me that worrying about subsidies is a reasonable thing.

I remember a few years back when Sacramento talk show host Tom Sullivan got a hold of a list of 20 huge mega corporations that paid no business income taxes that year. Man, the airwaves were filled with angry callers, most of them conservative I reckon, about how they (the tax lawyered up evil McScrouges) are a bunch of cheating swindlers. After all, look at all the billions they made. Ole Tom was pretty exercised.
So, I look around and….gross is not net, duh. What a heavy concept. Then I almost called the show to say, “Dude, 17 of the 20 lost money for the year, 2 broke about even, and one I couldn’t tell ya why they paid no business income taxes.” But, I refrained.
Note to the Lefties who are notoriously poor at math: if you are considering buying a small business and you are checking the books, don’t get all google-eyed looking at what the til brought over the last year or 6 months without a studious review of all debts, short term IOUs, and the negative cash flow to keep the inventory a’coming, doors open and the lights on. My gift to you with broken thinkers.

Well Bill given the number of SF we are sending it sounds very much like small teams that will primarily be coordinating air strikes. The whole air campaign has been a joke up to now with LBJ style rules of engagement that has the Air Force and Navy/Marine Airmen screaming to high heaven about the lag for HQ strike approval. Reports have them coming back with something like 60 to 80% of ordinance still on the racks unused. Since they wont do kill boxes over the bad guys and let them kill anything with a weapon or concentration of troop you need forward air control to get the best benefit from the strikes.
I would reference the opening of the Afghanistan campaign as a model. A handful of Air Force controllers embedded with the Northern Alliance broke the long standing stalemate that let the NA roll out of the hills and kick talliban ass. These skilled operators are a force multiplier. A couple of guys observing a fight from the next hill or a ridgeline away with encrypted comms are relatively safe and cause havoc amongst the targeted scum bags. Real time reports from experienced FAC’s to skilled airmen is invaluable in a fight.
The Russian sortie rate has dwindled to 25 or so a day from the opening 80-90 range. A sobering learning curve for the Russian dictator. The Russian have no experience in modern high tempo air ops much less an expeditionary air wing in hostile territory that relies on air lift for supplies.

    Sorry Bill,
Profits are; Profit = Total Revenue – Total Expenses
Profit- A financial benefit that is realized when the amount of revenue gained from a business activity exceeds the expenses, costs and taxes needed to sustain the activity. Any profit that is gained goes to the business’s owners, who may or may not decide to spend it on the business.

Want to cut the national debt by $8.5 trillion dollars? Find the lost Pentagon money. This article is from 2013 but we seem to never hear about the missing $8.5 trillion. Hmmmm…

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/11/18/us-usa-pentagon-waste-specialreport-idUSBRE9AH0LQ20131118
“Because of its persistent inability to tally its accounts, the Pentagon is the only federal agency that has not complied with a law that requires annual audits of all government departments. That means that the $8.5 trillion in taxpayer money doled out by Congress to the Pentagon since 1996, the first year it was supposed to be audited, has never been accounted for.”

Since Todd won’t or cannot answer the question, up to $60 billion annually if we count all the government benefits towards the O&G industry. The worst of it all is the Obama administration has increased some of the O&G subsides by over 40%.
    http://priceofoil.org/fossil-fuel-subsidies/
What is a fossil fuel subsidy?
A fossil fuel subsidy is any government action that lowers the cost of fossil fuel energy production, raises the price received by energy producers or lowers the price paid by energy consumers. There are a lot of activities under this simple definition—tax breaks and giveaways, but also loans at favorable rates, price controls, purchase requirements and a whole lot of other things.

Quick and dirty numbers (from 2011):
    http://www.technologyreview.com/view/425489/a-future-of-fossil-fuels/
The US mix is an interesting bird, I think. A mixture of somewhat predictable year-on-year improvements in efficiency, a need for more energy for GDP gains, ongoing globalization (ie. offshoring), and a never-ending population increase based on super lax immigration policy. A big tug o’ war.
My guess is that fossil fuel depletion will be more of a driver than public policy. You never run out, but the extraction cost goes up.
