George Rebane

This little update is primarily to continue the record of recent columns, commentraries, comments, and other contributions to the bubbling pot of preventable global warming (PGW).  As documented in these pages, I wrote a response to a Union piece by a couple of physicians making the usual outlandish claims for the existence of PGW, which they, as is common these days, confounded under the label ‘climate change’.  Other pro and con columns followed the initial piece, the most notable con pieces by skeptics Bob Hren and Norm Sauer (here, here, and here).

However, for some reason my 8sep15 counter – ‘Bad time for making draconian public policy’ – to the Drs Newsom has drawn particular and ongoing ire from true believers, of which I am unabashedly proud.  The most recent in this sequence was from the Klistoff couple in Grass Valley.  I present it italized below as it appears on The Union’s blog (here)

A hoax?  Really?

George Rebane’s acrimonious commentary regarding Bill and Christine Newsome’s open letter to Congressman LaMalfa is a sad example of many right-winged opinion pieces and letters published in The Union.

There seems to be an undercurrent of anger mixed with presumptuous and pedantic platitudes that do nothing to foster mutual understanding of the issues being discussed.

But now apparently, these articles suggest the existence of an international conspiracy among climate scientists claiming their research is falsified in order to obtain grant money. Wow!

Is this what Congressman LaMalfa is suggesting when he claims there is political manipulation of climate science? What is the evidence for this? Some even claim there is “global cooling” and that climate change is a hoax. Really?

Take a look at the world’s glaciers and ice caps. Is their rapid rate of melting consistent with global “cooling”? Where is the data to back up this claim?

The scientific evidence for climate change, influenced by human activity, is overwhelming. American and International scientific organizations unanimously agree. So what is the political agenda of those who claim it is a hoax?

Alex and Ronda Klistoff, Grass Valley

I responded to the above with a letter-to-the-editor that was emailed on 26 September 2015.  It has yet to appear.  (Presumably The Union editor will supply it with a title.)

True believers in preventable global warming (PGW) denigrate the science and data that counters public policy nostrums designed to sacrifice economies on the altar of human salvation from a promised heat catastrophe in the making.  As commentaries in these pages record, skeptics continue to cite detailed and compelling science to contradict that the PGW ‘debate is over’.

In their 26sep15 letter Mr & Mrs Klistoff cite my 8sep15 “acrimonious commentary” responding to the 29aug15 OV column by the Drs Newsom, and summarily dismiss major contributors to the ongoing PGW debate.  All true believers live with the comfortable knowledge that government funded research is unbiased, untainted by money, with findings true and pure as the fresh driven snow.  However, research and researchers that have ever had even a smidgeon of industry funding are forever tainted beyond redemption.  And doubly so if these counter any ‘science’ which for them is already beyond debate.

Those of us who have spent many years doing R&D with the government know that faith to be misplaced.  Government agencies also have agendas, and dispense their monies to advance those agendas.  Therefore for those who consume research, it is ever ‘Caveat Emptor’.

Our Climate Change dustup between the Newsom’s, Rebane, Hern, Sauer and minor intellectual lights in the Union came to the attention of Anthony Watts and his thousands of daily readers at Watts UP With That. Here is the WUWT post on the Mann / Sauer exchange:
Earlier this week, in Facts against the Mann, we noted how some ice core data cast doubt on Michael E. Mann’s recent claim that:
“overall warmth of the globe and northern hemisphere today is substantially greater than during Medieval time”
This was made in the context of an invective filled rebuttal in the Nevada City, CA Union newspaper, over a column questioning the validity of Mann’s work, citing McIntyre and McKittrick’s work. Sauer wrote:
McIntyre and McKitrick’s work led to a U.S. Senate investigation that debunked Mann’s hockey stick theory that 1998 was the hottest year in the last 1,000. The Senate investigation also found the study of the social networking of the paleoclimatology world showed how close it was and how often a small group of scientists both co-wrote and peer-reviewed papers for each other. In addition, no statisticians were ever involved in their research work or peer review articles.
In response, Mann hauled out the usual tired old hate-filled libel:
Mr. Sauer parroted baseless talking points that have their origin in fossil-fuel industry-funded climate change denial propaganda, not honest scientific discourse.
    Source: http://www.theunion.com/opinion/columns/18308425-113/michael-mann-columnist-peddles-discredited-fossil-fuel-industry
Jim McIntosh writes on the WUWT Facebook page:

    Well noted Stephen
I guess his ability to take out a full page ad in the Sac Bee makes him an expert.
He’s also a questionable physician. Todd perhaps you should fact check your sources. Keeps you from looking stupid.

EDINBURG — The Texas Medical Board took disciplinary action against the chief operating officer of Doctors Hospital at Renaissance for improperly caring for a patient.
Dr. Lawrence Gelman, a prominent Edinburg anesthesiologist, was ordered to take medical classes for “failure to maintain adequate medical records or practice medicine in an acceptable, professional manner,” the state board said in an agreed order Gelman signed last month.
According to the document, the doctor failed to perform an adequate pre-operative heart evaluation on the patient in July 2009. The board also found he failed to document the patient’s cardiac risk status.”

It is always the same with the libnuts like Frisch. The old Alinsky strategy. Anyone not falling in to goosestep with the libs is attacked and discredited. Frisch loved the Newsomes, those two MD’s, since they agreed with his idiotic views on AGW, but he can’t stand this new guy Gelman. Same old story. I tell you, is it any wonder the left is on the ropes. They are all liars!

The real “human manipulation” of anything, is the records and facts. The ECO fanatics NEVER answer up to those facts. (they just never happen) IPCC destroys the original information rather than turn it over for all to see. Who gives a crap that millions of bucks of grant money to create computer programs to “predict” doom and gloom, have been dead wrong?
“We need more money to find out why!” NOAA and NASA have both been caught messing with the information. No warming for a LONG time, and a few hours with a pencil and a chart makes it all go away, and warming is back on track, just they way the want it to.
Then just the other day I post info on an island where the warmers claim sea levels are rising, but the facts say they are NOT.(sucks when that happens)

Paul 9:15PM suggests a reference to goosestepping by someone else requires me to admonish them because I’ve taken Paul to task for using a term repurposed from describing neo-Nazis denying Germany’s mass murder of Jews and others to describing climate heretics in the here and now.
Paul, the Goosestep was invented by the English and was refined by the Prussians back when there was a Prussia. The Goosestep is currently in ceremonial use in over 50 countries and the pejorative use of “goosestep” in modern English is “The term is sometimes used to suggest the unthinking loyalty of followers or soldiers: “Brown has a goose-step mentality.”
Now, Paul, just where do you find the moral equivalence between, say commenting on Nancy Pelosi’s goose-stepping caucus and your use of “denier” (as in equating the reality of rotting Jewish corpses with the claimed reality of catastrophic anthropogenic global warming in the future that requires me to admonish someone else for using the term as it has been used for nearly 80 years?
Someone doing a goosestep figuratively or literally does not make them demented or evil. Do we have that straight now?

It’s all mankind ‘s fault, and yes, we should have done something before the damage was irreversible. A valuable lessen here.

I’ll be meeting with other people with Valerie Jarrett and Gina McCarthy as well as numerous members of the House and Senate. Three cheers for the last week of climate debate in the country whic saw Pope Francis helping to change the tone of the discussion; China committing to a 30% reduction in GHG emissions through a cap and trade program pioneered in California; and numerous Republican leaders subtlety shifting their rhetoric to acknowledge AGW but saying we can’t do anything about it. AlI this time I thought Ecuador was the leader…..they will emerge again like all poor countries will when we pay them billions of Yankee dollars to compensate them loss of fossil fuel revenue, and even might let some Green Protesters out of jail by then. Maybe we can funnel all those billions and billions of dollars through the “above reproach UN.” Follow the money trail. After the UN and its thousands of employees and their friends and relatives in corrupt governments take their cut, the poor countries will have enough to pave new roads to the oil fields….in electric trucks. A most promising future I say.

Just a note that big money is getting in on the action against climate change.
“In July, 13 major U.S. companies, including Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, signed a White House statement in favor of a Paris deal. Politically, support from the business community could help to undercut the argument that economic growth and reducing carbon emissions are mutually exclusive goals.
Still, no matter what the country’s major banks say, it’s not clear whether they’ll persuade many Republican lawmakers to get on board with addressing climate change — especially if those lawmakers are facing primary challenges from tea-party types and already feel insecure about holding on to their seats. It’s also far from certain whether the business community can do much to change the anti-climate-action views of conservative lawmakers who have won congressional seats in recent years.”

Yes, Democratic activist scientists have gone through the ignoring phase, the laughing phase and are finally in the fighting stage. Michael Mann writing to that powerhouse of six day a week newspaper journalism, The Union, in order to defend his crowing glory known as the Hockey Stick is testament to that.

Either the Repubs are likely to be on the losing end of public opinion on this one if they make it part of their platform that AGW is not something to be concerned about. Combine that with their stand on immigration, gay marriage, abortion rights and marijuana legalization and it makes for
weak policy positions opposed by the majority of voters. Add the upcoming blood bath in the house and it’s pretty grim.
