Cheri West, senior aide of Assemblyman Brian Dahle, has declared her candidacy for the District #1 supervisorial slot that will be vacated by Nate Beason next year.  Jo Ann and I only know of her, but don’t know her personally.  She sounds like a worthy candidate to oppose Heidi Hall, her very progressive opponent who is already well known in Nevada County.  Looks like it’s time to start thanking Nate for his service, and manning the ramparts for Ms West.  In socialist California, folks like us in the backwoods are among the last who don’t believe that ‘More government is better.’

Apropos to the Pope’s visit, I find it hard to understand how the Left can say that capitalism harms the poor and underprivileged, when it and it alone has been the system over the centuries that has reduced hunger, destitution, and ignorance in the world.  Early adopters of capitalism are the countries that have prospered.  An easy test is to examine the countries that have most ruthlessly suppressed capitalism – how are the poor and underprivileged doing in those lands?

On the VW scandal.  Today we learn that VW’s monkeying with its cars’ pollution control software is a well-trod path in the auto industry pioneered years ago by GM.  This doesn’t excuse the bastards for doing it, but it does shed light again on the ongoing collateral damage from progressive governance.  Car makers regularly game the system in various ways to satisfy the likes of the EPA and CARB in their butt stupid assertions that pollution controls don’t impede performance.  Anybody with a half-assed engineering education learns in his freshman year that that is horse pucky.  It’s part and parcel of the progressive mantra that tax rates don’t affect business decisions/performance.

Large multi-national car makers have now become corporatists.  They can make cars that uphold the environmentalists’ BS while being tested and still deliver performance on the highways.  This is a wink-wink relationship that works as long as no one looks too carefully behind the curtain.  And then some wonks at the University of West Virginia didn’t get the message and looked behind the curtain; the rest now is history, both settled and still being made.

The same goes on with business tax rates and certain companies that dutifully tell their progressive legislators that all is well with higher taxes.  Why?  Because they own the market segments where they can pass the added tax costs on to the consumers who dutifully pay higher prices while being told by the same politicians and unionists that the corporations are making obscene profits (when the profits remain unchanged as promised).  What really happens is that the poor middle class and welfare schlubs take it in the shorts without a clue as to how they are being milked.

[update] Gun-free Australia’s crime rates are soaring after law abiding citizens were forced to surrender their arms.  As usual the butt stupid politicians are at pains to explain why homicides, assaults, and armed robberies are up – armed robberies up 44%, in Victoria state alone homicides are up 300%.  Over the previous 25 years all national crime rates were dropping until their liberals decided to spend hundreds of millions of dollars for mandated repurchases of legal firearms from its citizens.  It probably would have done no good to remind the idiots down under that now only criminals have guns, and the bad guys all know it when they walk into a house or a store.  Up here we are still unclear on the concept, as the Left does its best to abrogate the Second Amendment through an increasing pile of ever more byzantine regulations on gun ownership, accessories, ammunition, and usage.  And check out the crime rates in our Democrat controlled cities where draconian gun laws are in effect.  (H/T to RR reader and correspondent.)

….and less than a day after announcing her candidacy “The Flabby Purple Conscience of the Sierra Foothills” is trying to link Ms. West to our ongoing discussions. Primarily at Todds but I imagine that once he finds himself sufficiently aroused he’ll want Ms. West to disavow your site as well.
Of course if she is foolish enough to indulge him in this this clumsy and obvious ploy then she deserves to lose. 🙂

Do you believe that there should be government mandated emission standards for automobiles? Should that be a State or Federal mandate.

Well Boehner has bailed. He wure expressed relief to jump out of the Republican rats nesters that were nipping at his heels like he was rotten cheese. Next the Repubs shreikers will push the party so far to the right they will lose big in 2016. That scenario is a done deal.

Regarding the Pope. It was not long ago, maybe a couple of years, the libs were dissing the “Crusades Pope” and how rotten they are in history. The Pope that sent Father Serra here and all those Pope’s that were in the European wars of the middle ages. Now because he says something they like, “global warming” or whatever, all is good. Liberalism is a mental disorder as exampled by “jon” and “Frisch”.

Never dissed Pope Francis as a man. He’s quite an inspiration to a person of any faith, or lack of faith. He’s a great man, the world loves him, and that’s what matters.

Paul, exactly. With their newfound power, the Repubs will be like 7th graders taking over the Middle School. The screw-ups, the damaging sound bites, the political miscalculations WILL happen, and the GOP will be tarnished badly in the view of the General Electorate. Hillary or Joe just got a huge present today.

PaulE 1010am – Yes, auto emission standards were material in cleaning the air in big metropolitan areas. That does not mean that today ‘more is better’, the problem is more complex than that. And yes, I would leave the imposition of such standards to the states as it is now – not all states are created equal.

re Jon’s 1219pm – “… makes you feel like a real man,…” again totally misses the point and widens the gulf. As a legally armed citizen who expects to maintain his skills with the firearms he owns, it is necessary on a somewhat regular interval to go to the range and stay current in the handling and operation of his weapons.
As a certified and practicing range officer, I can attest to the need for such skill maintenance when I need to supervise and instruct an individual who arrives to shoot after a long hiatus. That person can be a danger to one and all until he re-familiarizes himself in a safe and supervised environment. As a gun owner, going to the range is a prudent activity and has nothing to do with the liberals’ snark from the sidelines.

Jon 1251pm – I don’t want to circle the barn too much, because all of this Second Amendment stuff has been well covered and debated on RR (you can either google or use TypePad’s search in the upper left panel). But the main idea remains that we conservatarians hold that 1) government inherently tends toward evil, especially as its citizenry becomes gruberized both in intellect and interest, and 2) a well and widely armed citizenry is the best and last hope that any people can have to maintain their liberties and liberal form of governance. Those are a couple of important tenets of our ideology, and we do realize that the Left has little comprehension of these, and most certainly no support of such beliefs. As such, these tenets serve also to define and divide us.

Well, I am neither a Catholic nor a Pope basher, but if the Pope really wanted to put his money where his mouth is, he could open up the vaults of the Treasury inside the Vatican and pawn all those jewels, gold coins, rare treasures, and deeds of trust to stamp out poverty. Then the Pope as well as the chronically broke folks would both be as poor as church mice within 18 months time……just like a socialistic progressive wet dream.
FYI. I heard that Catholic Charities does wonderful work and is involved in many worthwhile endeavors that cost plenty of dollars helping the needy.
The current Pope is just saying what all Popes say, so no big deal all in all.
Too bad some take some of the Pope’s complete package (total message) and use his words selectively to score political points or engage in ill willed gotcha games.

George, as far as leaving it up to the states to determine emission standards I understand that that’s what you believe but you had no problem with the federal government taking charge as to whether
states can have the right to require labeling for genetically modified food products. Can you explain that That was in reference to a house bill that Doug LaMalfa l was co-sponsor of.

PaulE 1144pm – I don’t think I understand your question, it’s a bit garbled. If states don’t want certain cars sold within their jurisdiction, then it should be up to them to so rule. Their own residents will decide whether it suits them or not. I think food labeling is a bit different only in the sense that foods of any given type are fungible, and their mass production lowers costs to all and simplifies the inter-state shipping problem. But if that can be shown to be no problem with some future technology, then by all means, let the states label the foods sold within their jurisdictions.
The overall utility here is to minimize the size of Leviathan as much as possible. You have any good ideas?
