Our government-media complex is ratcheting up the hysteria about man-made global warming (AGW) to a fever pitch in preparation for this fall’s Paris conference on ‘climate change’.  Obama wants the world to see that the US will lead in reducing CO2 emissions no matter the economic cost, and Moonbeam Brown wants the world to also see that California will be way ahead of Obama.  The entire argument for massive increases in the scope, size, and cost of government called for in Agenda21 rests on the thesis – Man’s burning of fossil fuels is warming the global climate to life threatening levels in the near future, and forcing Man to greatly reduce or abandon fossil fuels will save us from the coming worldwide disaster.

Local liberal cadres have been cranked up to support the hysteria on a grass roots level.  Here in Nevada County our newspaper The Union is picking up the pace in its op-ed pages.  On 30 August the paper published an article by two physicians (the Drs Newsom of the Nevada County Climate Change Coalition) touting pro-AGW consensus science and denigrating its skeptics (or their term ‘deniers’) focusing on Congressman LaMalfa.  A few of us leaped into the breach to answer the Newsoms’ erroneous reporting.  I wrote a short letter addressing their errors, but my friend Dr Bob Hren wrote a longer and better piece which was published today (5sep15) in the Union’s op-ed section – ‘Climate change: some inconvenient truths’.  In his article Bob summarizes a few of the more egregious errors of data, fact and science purveyed by True Believers like the Newsoms.

A more comprehensive response to the AGW propaganda promoted by the Environmental Defense Fund was recently published in Forbes‘Top 10 Global Warming Lies That May Shock You’.  The heavily referenced piece was crafted by the skeptical Heartland Institute.

CApower2015
Meanwhile, Gov Brown and the California Democrats are doing their best to pass new legislation that will significantly take the state’s economy down another notch or two, driving out more employers and jobs.  As reported here in the 5sep15 WSJ, the “proposed state law would cut petroleum-fuel use by 50%, require utilities to get half their power from renewable sources, and increase energy efficiency in buildings by 50%—all by 2030, using 2016 levels as the starting point. A second measure would mandate an 80% reduction in state greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050, from 1990 levels. … The bills are backed by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer, who say that California must begin taking serious steps to curb its use of fossil fuels.”  See the above graphic from the article.  What the True Believers never tell us is from where does the electric power come that will replace fossil fuels’ use in transportation.  It most certainly will not come from wind and solar which are ‘some time’ sources produced by technologies not nearly sufficient to deliver the levels of steady power consumption required by even our growth-stunted future economy.

We also get news that the pro-AGW team is now rejiggling the sunspot data archive to support their own denial that earth’s climate is influenced far more by the sun than by man’s meager machinations on this planet.  Without going into detail (see referenced articles), the sun’s solar wind affects the earth’s magnetic field, which in turn affects the cosmic ray intensity impinging on our atmosphere, which in turn affects the cloud cover that overwhelmingly governs how much solar energy earth reflects and receives.  It’s a big deal that the grant-driven scientists have been told to bury either by outright denial of the science (which hasn’t worked), or now attempt to implement Plan B by rejiggling the historical sunspot data so as to decorrelate it with the record of earth’s temperatures.  You see, the approximately 11-year sunspot cycle is an observable of the solar wind’s intensity.  And we already know from the IPCC’s ‘Datagate’ scandals how other datasets have been altered to produce the graphic ‘hockey stick’ temperature spiking from their already suspect general circulation (computer) models.  (See also the active campaign to gag their own scientists, here.)

As we don’t know how The Union will continue to play the AGW issue in the coming days, I close with my own 30aug15 letter that I sent to the newspaper (since this may be the only light of day it sees).

Dear People – re the 30aug15 piece on climate change by the Drs Newsom.  I do suggest that they may have mistakenly assumed their MD degrees allow their donning the mantle of scientists – a common mistake by physicians.  Literally every scientist we celebrate today for having extended human knowledge was opposed by the established ‘consensus scientists’ of their day.  This is not the place to debate the depth and breadth of today’s man-made global warming (AGW) religion, but it is worth contending the points of science with which the Newsoms dunned Congressman LaMalfa.

Today the post-scientific embrace of AGW is a global political issue that musters ‘consensus science’ for its legitimacy.  The nations’ academies of science must also embrace AGW lest their grant monies be withdrawn by the local politicos, most of whom are waiting for the large wealth transfer from the haves that fomented international mass hysteria promises.  Even the UN’s IPCC now admits that there is a problem with the mis-predicted earth’s temperature record of the last 15+ years.  And the consensus scientists don’t have a clue about the real impact of CO2 on temperature.  Yes, CO2 is a minor greenhouse gas (compared to water vapor), and yes, humans pump an unknown fraction of it into the atmosphere.  However, CO2 gives life to earth’s biomass, and is no more the claimed “pollutant” than is oxygen or mother’s milk if consumed in excess.  But in the end, all climate scientists admit that earth’s carbon cycle is poorly understood, and the more critical climate transfer function is almost completely unknown.

Good time for more research, bad time for making draconian public policy.

AGWevidence
[7sep15 update]  The Union as of today has published three columns promoting belief in AGW, which also dun the skeptics, compared to one column – Bob Hren’s – outlining major skeptical arguments.  Today the newspaper also published Russ Steele’s letter viz the Newsoms’ original column.  It is a kinder and more accessible indictment of the True Believers than my ascerbic and too technical rebuttal (‘I yam what I yam!’).  Mr Steele’s letter follows.

Regarding the Aug. 29 open letter to Congressman LaMalfa by the two Newsom physicians, certainly they must use science in their medical practice, relying on the latest medical studies in treating their patients.

The good doctors would be dismayed if they discovered that a leading medical study they are relying on to treat patients was based on fraudulent data, possibly damaging the patient’s health.

My question is: would they be equally dismayed to discover that the studies they referenced in their open letter to Congressman LaMalfa are based on fraudulent data?

They claim that the earth has warmed because NOAA said it has, calling into question Congressman LaMalfa’s claim of no warming in 18 years. NOAA has been tinkering with the data to create the cited warming, as reported by multiple scientists, but here is the latest analysis by Professor Robert Brown of Duke University and Werner Brozek: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/08/14/problematic-adjustments-and-divergences-now-includes-june-data/

When independent satellite measurements of the global temperature are plotted the trend is flat. The earth’s temperature is the same today as it was in 1997. Congressman LaMalfa is correct, no warming in 18 years.

Russell Steele, Nevada City

[8sep15 update]  Perhaps I jumped the gun.  The Union today published my above letter as a full-blown Other Voices column with a very appropriately chosen title and tag line.  Kudos and gratitude for balance and exposure of another skeptical perspective.

FWIW (nothing) the U.S. already leads the World in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, thanks to fracking which has allowed nat gas to replace coal in the generation of electricity. The next step will be far more painful (and useless).

LarryW 1134am – Quite true. However, the ‘leadership’ Obama and Moonbeam are striving for is not intended to reverse their version of AGW; their programs to keep us in the leadership are intended to reduce the US into a peerage second-world country that will be compliant and ready to embrace global governance per the outlines of A21. The only way this can be done is to tank the US economy, and the only way that can be done is to increase government’s role in everything, and the current and most fortuitous opportunity for that is through draconian public policies responding to the ersatz AGW hysteria. But then, you knew all that.

On another note,, the AGW “experts” sure missed the mark. There is still ice on the North Pole. According to “them” is should be ALL GONE as of this year. Al Gore said so.

Dear People – As presented here in RR for many years now, with the global AGW hysteria we are dealing with a socio-political problem that is as serious or more so than Renaissance scientists and intelligent laymen encountered with the shift from a Ptolemaic perspective to that taught by Copernicus. Today the gruberized masses have been taught that science is sacrosanct, proceeds without revision, and can answer all questions, including the ability to look accurately into the future. However, our universe is so constructed as to pose huge (scientific and computational) hurdles against such endeavors. And it doesn’t matter how many (government paid) scientists attest to a trumpeted conclusion, the truth of their assertion, in this case AGW, is thereby not affected.
But the question is serious none the less, because today AGW is the convenient, albeit manufactured, crisis that must not be wasted on the road to the new collectivist world order. To change course in a democracy, it all hangs on how many of the ignorant you can convince and cram into voting booths. I hope that in this comment stream we don’t spend time with ad hominems, but instead contend the inevitable popularly disseminated points brought up by the True Believers.

Hren debunked most of the gruberized propaganda in the Union but as you can see, even a scientist like Hren is tossed aside by them. I have said from day one many years ago this AGW is pure politics. But still the smartest people holding our tithes in government (with cocked gun) cannot wean themselves from the ignorant masses gruberizd by fright.

(I highly recommend you read Kahneman & Tversky’s work in ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’). There, much to your surprise, you will discover that man has always and often made decisions based on his sense of fairness (or ‘social justice’) that trumped overall material benefit to himself and everyone else concerned. Today the beat goes on.
Collectivists have freely admitted that the road to eventual betterment requires us to traverse a thorny patch or two. Stalin, perhaps, said it best as he steered the USSR toward Marx’s goal of the ‘Communist Man’ when he advised that “You have to break an egg or two to make an omelet.” Today Obama and Brown are both breaking eggs, and they know it. It is America’s gruberized, their constituents, who are forever denied the grand vision.

Drue, perhaps you can identify one for us. If it’s the Drs. Newsom, they’re probably had very little science in the college years, and their clinical experience is, in general, at right angles to science in mindset. My first wife spent the last year and a half as a frequent visitor to Bill Newsom’s cancer center at SNMH and, while her primary doctor was Newsom’s partner Dr. Campbell, it wasn’t unusual for her to see Dr. Newsom when he was the one who was on call. Newsom is ethical, caring and competent. But how does that have anything to do with his competence to evaluate claims by climatologists running massive computer models of reality? I’d say nothing.
Life science majors, including the common premed major “molecular and cellular biology” is practically devoid of real physical science and real math. They take a freshman year chemistry and physics class that has advanced material stripped, as the life science people just don’t need physical and inorganic chemistry and physics knowledge past that level, and difficult classes that can bruise their GPA and chances for Med school admission tend to be avoided.
In short, prospective MD’s who are not both exceedingly bright and masochistic aren’t taking real physics and real chemistry in college. That includes one local self-styled climate activist who claims special knowledge of science because of a Harvard PhD in genetics… but can’t remember ever having taken even one class in physics going back to her high school days and, when asked what “temperature” was could only answer it’s the numbers on a thermometer… she had less knowledge than I did in the middle of a chemistry class in high school.
If you don’t know, please do look it up and learn something about Reality. If you do know, please don’t help them here.
A problem I note with people in the life sciences, especially medical, is that their version of science really does tend towards consensus. If your oath requires you to first, do no harm, you need to follow the herd in many things… ready made to take the IPCC pronouncements to heart while the IPCC ignores the truly inconvenient truths being raised by numerous physicists who have uncovered a number of failures of the IPCC’s politically driven scientific vision to account for IPCC predictions failing to materialize.
One big criticism of Hren’s Other Voices is that he talks of AGW not being proven true, and in the physical sciences you can NEVER prove a theory true… you can only prove it false (in whole or in part) by showing a prediction made does not fit experimental data. As Feynman so famously stated, “It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong” and predictions found to be utterly incorrect go back to Hansen’s congressional testimony to Congress in the ’80’s and forward to all of the CO2 driven general circulation models predicting an atmospheric hotspot over the equator that simply just does not exist.
Alarmists call that “cherrypicking” but in truth, it’s the sort of Popperian falsification embraced by Feynman (and every other physicist and chemist in the 21st century) that happens in real science on a regular basis.
If it doesn’t agree with experiment, it’s wrong. The experiment is running every day as the third rock from the Sun does its thing and the physicists who are making the most sense to me at the moment believe the Sun is slipping (or has already slipped) into a grand minimum and most of this century will be cold. Winters may be similar to this depiction, painted at the beginning of the last grand minimum:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunters_in_the_Snow
If you think a degree warmer is a harbinger of doom, just wait for cold to sink in.

Teri passed away in 2001. No one, including Teri, me or our son blamed the care she received from Drs Campbell or Newsom for a less than perfect outcome; we got an extra year and a half which was all that should have been expected from an initial presentation of 4th stage of her particular cancer. She was close to dying when the actual problem was discovered.

Ah, electric cars. New kid on the block. Would be great in warm climate urban traffic jams. But, reports out of the Northeast are replete with the stories of a dark and snowy night when you had to run to the nearest market. Seems turning the heater on in frigid weather with lights on really sucks up the energy. Thus, your 20 or 30 mph is reduced to 15 miles. Sucks when the convience store is 8 miles away. Almost made it there and back, almost. Would be a great replacement in the summertime for a street legal golf cart if it wasn’t so overpriced.
Let’s look at True Blue New England. Somewhere around 70% of New Englanders who purchased an all electric car or an electric hybrid say they would not buy another one or would trade for a conventional fuel efficient automobile. Bright future, eh? The number one selling vehicle in the NE is the Ford Ranger, followed by other competitors SUVs. The Fusion comes in #4. Nothing new under the sun.

No “Jon”, you side with one faction that claims to speak for the Earth. Let’s remember what was told to The Guardian by the man who launched the concept of Gaia in the first place, James Lovelock:
“The great climate science centres around the world are more than well aware how weak their science is. If you talk to them privately they’re scared stiff of the fact that they don’t really know what the clouds and the aerosols are doing. They could be absolutely running the show. We haven’t got the physics worked out yet. One of the chiefs once said to me that he agreed that they should include the biology in their models, but he said they hadn’t got the physics right yet and it would be five years before they do. So why on earth are the politicians spending a fortune of our money when we can least afford it on doing things to prevent events 50 years from now? They’ve employed scientists to tell them what they want to hear.”

Indeed! “Fascist” is hurled with such thoughtlessness and so carelessly by the left these days I barely even noticed it anymore. Like the original “F – word” in a rap song……little more than filler.

Let me try to get a handle on this Global Warming thang. Are you guys so fascist that you won’t even acknowledge the debate has been over for years? I can’t believe my ears and eyes when I see you knuckle dragging members of the Flat Earth Society walk around with your heads embedded where the sun don’t shine. Time to face reality you closed minded bigots that love poisoning your neighbor’s well while standing on the backs of the poor women just to make you feel taller and more macho.
Did I get it right, uh Wally? How can we just sit here and no nothing. AGW will knock the Earth off its axis and hurl us into the Sun’s gravitational grasp or launch Mother Earth into the frozen emptiness of outer space. We are so screwed and yet you deniers stand in the way of changing the course of Destiny’s Impending Doom.
You are truly a bunch of science hating fascists. Have you no concern for the poor children?
Myself, I stand above the fray. I hate the cold, so I have resigned myself to being fried like a Twinkie at the Iowa State Fair. Better than freezing my ass off as the Earth is propelled to Infinity and Beyond. Maybe them aliens from a galaxy far far away will take mercy and save us. ET, take us home, but call your Momma first to tell her to get the guest bedrooms ready.
Truly you guys are Earth hating Neanderthals. That is kinda creepy, uh Wally? Glad I stay above the fray. 🙂

The experts have warned us for years that Russ’s house is burning. Poor Mr. Steele, living in a burning house all this time. Mother Earth is coming and boy is she pissed. Look, she just vomited up orange slim that poisoned the water supply in 4 states. Need I say more, you fascists?

Dr. Rebane, could you give your opinion of this blog post by Bill Gates? Bill is one smart dude (and businessman) and you would think he would take the preponderance of scientific evidence into consideration before taking a position. All of us common schlubs are influenced by a person of his stature, especially now that his foundation is so involved in worldwide charitable/”problem solving” projects.

Fuzz 1159am – An excellent point and question Mr Fuzz. While a more complete answer would and should take a posted piece of its own, let me see if pondering the following might shed some light on Mr Gates’ strategy.
    1. Note that nowhere does Gates confuse himself with the True Believers of catastrophic AGW. He hedges the way he characterizes the science by talking about possible effects and impacts IF such temperature increases were to occur. And there he talks about what “scientists generally agree” on; he’s too smart to bring up any specifics because all of those have been successfully rebutted by skeptics.
    2. The man is worth over $80B currently and he is talking about putting a little over 1% of his portfolio in ‘clean energy investments’. This is not a big bet for him.
    3. His blog piece basically argues for an investment environment that will ensure a return on investments in the alternative energy sector – although he does acknowledge the ongoing need for reliable fossil fuel energy to handle the ‘burstiness’ of alternative sources.
    4. He is a bit inconsistent in his argument for cheaper energy for the earth’s poor. EVERY approach to transiting to ‘clean energy’ will increase the cost of energy several-fold for everyone.
    5. He acknowledges that, given the climate models are correct, it will take a global effort to impact future temperatures – a few western countries ‘leading the way’ while no one else follows will not do. And we can bet the farm that the poorer countries will not follow lest the rich ones make them whole on the cost of energy during this transition, and that will not happen simply because there is no money for it.
    6. Mr Gates is now an expert in how to play the government-industrial complex. Nothing that involves this investment will affect his or his family’s lifestyle. But he knows that getting government to forcibly remove cheap and available energy sources will be required to make the money losing clean energy start-ups a good investment (recall Solyndra and the many others).
    7. He admits that government needs to “be smarter about how we use subsidies”, and acknowledges that the road to government subsidized alternative energy has been anything but well thought out – “Some subsidies for deploying renewable energy are also very inefficient, creating big incentives to install solar panels where it’s often not sunny or wind turbines where it’s not windy. We should be looking for ways to reduce these subsidies and invest the savings in the basic R&D that will help solve the problem.” The question then becomes, why continue letting the guys who can’t do any of the functions of planning and resource management correctly continue doing so in programs that require huge increases in both energy costs and consumer taxes to pay for the folly. Please read Bastiat’s ‘Broken Window’ essay for more on this approach.
    8. In sum, Mr Gates is doing the right thing to maximize the return on his promised investment in clean energy which also serves to further burnish his image as a kind and caring benefactor of all humanity. I can already see his larger-than-life statue ensconced in the Capitol rotunda. As you correctly point out, he is “one smart dude”.

    Patience, Grasshoppers.
Russ, I do wish you’d stop using links from Watts Up when writing pieces meant to persuade, as Watts is a target for the usual suspect and while argumentum ad hominem are fallacious, the chronically fallacious like our own Purpurus Colossaeus use them effectively in their quest to perfect the empty rhetoric they specialize in after wasting four years at Berkeley studying it to no good end.
Here’s an interesting link to some fresh meat:
    http://phys.org/news/2015-08-solar-decliningwhat.html
“The current solar cycle began on in January 2008, with minimal activity until early 2010. The sun is now on track to have the lowest recorded sunspot activity since accurate records began in 1750”
Russia’s Abdussamatov (an astrophysicist) puts the start of the new minimum at 2014.
Here’s a recent science bit from Shaviv at the Racah Institute of Physics
    http://www.sciencebits.com/sunspots_2.0
In short… solar variations influence the climate.
Here’s the latest sunspot data through August
    http://services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/solar-cycle-sunspot-number.gif
Solar Cycle 24 is seriously on the wane, and the crash in solar magnetic activity is even greater if one recalls the original projection (the red line on that NOAA figure) for the peak of 24 was close to 200. Bad theory isn’t a failure, it’s an attitude adjustment.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvEWYQGaFIc
Or, as Feynman might put it, the prediction doesn’t agree with experiment so drop that theory and try again.
Grasshoppers, we are but gnats on the shoulder of Sol as she orbits the center of the Milky Way, along for the ride. Patience; I’d bet real money that the crash of the global warming meme many of us have been expecting is within the decade, the upcoming Paris climate shindig is going to fail even worse than Copenhagen’s and this will eventually bring down the one party state in Sacramento.
The short term political problem will be the brief spike in warming we can expect from this winter’s El Niño… despite pretending to know the difference between “weather” and “climate”, the Warmistas will be on it like aroma on fresh dung. Patience is a virtue but the alarmists have to be in a panic, as the usefulness of Climate to fill their goals of a more UN-centric political system is NOW. With the “Pause” firmly installed, it’s getting harder for the Chicken Littles to convince the rabble that if we don’t act NOW to tax fossil fuel energy into oblivion, NYC will be flooding tomorrow.

When Gates gets an itch to do something important, he first buys the opinions of experts.
When he got convinced by the heads of a couple Washington DC 501c3’s to help the US establish unified education standards, the Gates Foundation started spreading $200 million to a web of 501c3’s to get to a world class solution. One of the early hires was California’s Phil Daro to be the chair of the math standards about seven years ago. Daro, with only a BA in English to his academic name, was the architect of Whole Math in California 20 years ago and the Common Core Standard for Mathematical Practice has Daro’s greasy fingerprints all over it. Whole Math Redux, only nationwide this time.
Education Experts love the “Common Core State Standards”. Do you?
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/how-bill-gates-pulled-off-the-swift-common-core-revolution/2014/06/07/a830e32e-ec34-11e3-9f5c-9075d5508f0a_story.html
After spending $200 million to buy Common Core for the country, the Gates Foundation is left with only $42.8 billion to slosh around for more good works and that doesn’t include the fortune Chairman Bill retains. Hold onto your hat, as the Common Core “Smarter Balance” test results will be publicly released in California in a week or two and the results are such that when the powers that be got them, they removed public access from the Department of Education servers that have been making the past results available to all going back to 1998 or so, not wanting to “confuse” the public after SB hits the street. Public outrage over deleting the past caused them to reverse that decision.
Bill’s Pretty Good Software Company made him rich beyond the Dreams of Avarice but it didn’t give him the knowledge to understand the weather or the wisdom to guide the US economy.

Our Designated Reader emailed me the copy from Corpulus Maximus regarding my Union piece this morning. It is worth a read since they speak nothing of the message but only denigrate the messenger which is their want and which completely saturates their bandwidth. It is most distressing that such a large fraction of the country has no idea what the AGW issue is, but only comply to the interpretations and exhortations of their accepted thought leaders.
Actually, they are not ‘thought leaders’ per se, for to be such one must have thoughts out there to lead. For the Left these pundits are Thought Manufacturers, who fashion and deliver what their grateful market lacks on any given issue. Wouldn’t it just floor you to have one of their ilk actually cite a relevant finding or even a factoid that could be attributed to science?
