In the 11jun15 sandbox a left-leaning reader pointed out the recent speech (here) of a California conservative assemblywoman who believes that God has intervened to bring drought upon our land as a corrective to punish us for our legalized practice of infanticide and abortions.  Another similarly leaning reader weighed in with his opinion that such expressions by Republican politicians will drive away the independent and undecided voters from Republican ranks.  How curious?

Apparently Democrats do not suffer from such interpretations and utterances by their politicians.  The long record of RR is overflowing with examples of one-sided blindness by our progressive commenters who send their fabled CCC (Collectivist Cricket Corps) to respond when they are reminded of leftwing politicians who think Pacific islands will tip over if over populated on one side or the other.  These extremes are daily joined by others of their ilk proposing patently insane social and economic policies that have never worked and cannot work because they fundamentally misinterpret human nature.  Yet when these are pointed out, not only in advance but also in their aftermath, our neighbors of the socialist tinge again respond through the good auspices of their CCC.  It is as if they are absolutely blind to the impact of their own nostrums, potions, and lotions which they hawk and apply to our body politic.

In contrast, the assemblywoman gave a perfectly plausible causal explanation in the context of her belief system, a belief system the verity of which science cannot disprove no matter the level of sneerage bestowed upon it from the secular humanist Left.  It was nobelist Richard Feynman who made that strong assertion years ago (here).  However, disproving the perennial prescriptions of progressives is a pursuit readily handled by middle-schoolers not yet cognitively castrated by public education.  No matter, the progressives go forward in their pursuit of elitist governance bestowed on democratic masses as if they had a solid record of accomplishments in their public policies portfolio.  We recall that Einstein perfectly labeled such dedicated repetitions perennially bereft of anticipated results.  And once more, they send the CCC into the breach.

The sad part of this tale is that such a liberal mind is now shared by an ever larger cohort of Americans during the new ‘post-intellectual’ age (e.g. Post-intellectualism and the Decline of Democracy, D.N. Wood, 1996).  The progressive elitists have created a perfect voting class that has little knowledge of how things work and even less of the world around them.  The dilemma of such a successful strategy is that the same class of the clueless are more and more difficult to employ with each succeeding year.  Then who will be the ‘other people’ whose money socialism requires to run its brave new world?

Unfortunately there is no easy way to keep guns out the hands of psychotics. Psychoses are hard to detect, especially in the new age of permissiveness for crazy people to mix freely with the (supposedly) non-crazies. And to attempt a wholesale gun control/ban as a remedy would deny freedoms that most Americans cherish – in short, we’re willing to put up with the occasional bloodbath perpetrated by a crazy or a zealot or … . Security and liberty are on opposite ends of a see-saw.

But George (3:10), if it saved even just one life, isn’t a violation of the constitutional rights of 300 million law abiding citizens worth it (if you didn’t count the number of them who die because they were unarmed when trouble came calling)?
Jon (2:48) we address criminal actions after they happen. I applaud the arrest of the shooter and expect he will die while incarcerated either in prison or a hospital that has many of the trappings of a maximum security prison. I await your solutions to be made without the politics you claim you are not playing being played. New gun laws are politics whether you want them called politics or not.
I have NO PROBLEM with a father gifting a firearm to an adult progeny but I also have no problem with charging him with a crime (multiple counts of criminally negligent homicide, perhaps?) if he knew his son had mental problems, including drug dependence.

Once again “jon” with a hair trigger shoots himself in the foot.
    Yup “gun free zone”.
“According to South Carolina law, civilians may not carry their legal fire arms “on school premises (including day care and preschool facilities), in law enforcement offices or facilities, in court facilities, at polling places on election days, in churches or other religious sanctuaries, or in hospitals or medical facilities. (S.C. Code Ann.§ 23-31-215.)”What do you think?
The penalties for carrying a firearm in such places include a fine of at least $1,000, up to one year in jail, or both.”
Gun free zone, means “shoot here first”.
The surviving mass shooters when interviewed said they did their homework and targeted “gun free zones” knowing damned well the chances of someone armed were slim to none to stop them.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

The Gabby Giffords shooter was a young psychotic, the Sandy Hook shooter was a young psychotic, this shooter would appear to be a young psychotic. The problem seems to me to be in identifying people who are more than just “odd” who need psychiatric intervention whether they want it or not.
The Soviet Union thought dissidents needed such intervention, and many with “Jon”‘s views want it for “climate deniers”.
Might “Jon” favor a “Catch 23”, where anyone who wanted a gun can have one if they aren’t crazy, but anyone who wanted a gun is defined to be crazy?

Just got back and read the list since my last comment. It appears “jonnie” dropped his drawers on this shooting. He was adequately defined by Fish. Jonnie also doesn’t give a hoot about black on black murder in the country either. Too bad, we on the right are saddened by that carnage. I am sure the little boys and girls playing stick-ball in the street and shot dead by gang violence don’t even get “jonnie’s” sympathy. What a man/woman? MA? Sounds like him.
I have never owned a gun yet I am an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment. (I have other things to defend myself) Years ago the liberals in America, maybe along with the ACLU, said mentally ill people have the same rights as the non mentally ill. So in response to the liberal’s victories, the mental hospital were opened and the streets filled with those folks. Their Civil Rights were intact. Great victory for the left.
Now when a nut with a mental illness attacks and kills, the left is all about the gun. What the heck happened to the “civil rights” you all were so concerned for? I mean, a non mentally ill gun owner appears to not be shooting people like this fellow in SC. It is simply another example that Liberals are themselves, mentally ill. Just like alcoholics, it is an acquired habit.

re Gregory’s 342pm – In all my years, I have never been able to get a progressive to define a social utility function that can be then used to make public policy. Neither will they define their credo since either of these will condemn in the eyes of a (classically) liberal society.

Jon 3:53 “Lets allow firearms in hospitals, schools and churches! Great idea Walt.”
Coincident with the massacre at Virginia Tech, the University of Utah was struggling with a similar issue… the Utah state constitution’s plan language meant that anyone with a valid concealed weapons permit was allowed to carry and possess that gun on campus, and that included some 18 year old freshmen.
The problem: should they allow freshmen who didn’t want a gun stored in their room by their roommate demand a different room? While rooming with a bona fide gun owner would be a fine countercultural experience for a young “Jon”, I think they decided to let the gun-phobic choose someone else.
I am going to expect “Jon” will be unable or unwilling to explain why the gun free Virginia Tech had the massacre and UU has been remarkably free of gun violence.

Why not “jon”? You have minimum wage rent a cop with a gun acting as “security”, and they can’t go off the deep end at any time?
Shootings committed by those with CCWs are so few and far between. If there have been any,, LIBs would have released the hounds of media and ran the story into the ground.
Civilians will guns stop crime every day of the week. But you wouldn’t know that, since LIB news will NOT report it. But the places I get my news from does report those stories.

One of the problems we have here is that parents ignore the clues when their children develop mental problems. The South Carolina suspect’s uncle reports the kid has been adrift for several years, not getting a driver’s license, unemployed, basically hiding in his bedroom. Yet his father gave him a gun for 21st birthday.
Then there’s the Colorado theater shooter, whose shrink testified in court the other day that she became so concerned she called his mother. Mom dismissed the concern, saying her son had been acting strange for years.

George, I think you misunderstand the power of the Progressive intellect. A proper “social utility function”, if I correctly grok your intent, can’t be defined. You just get a bunch of the smartest people around (by definition, all Progressives), let them debate the issue amongst themselves and then they tell us the decision!
None of those messy “negative Rights” that stand in the way of Common Sense as intuited by our betters. You see, if you were smart and ethical enough to be a Progressive you already would be.

Get a grip Boardman (4:25). The Colorado shooter went miles out of his way to attack a theater that was placarded a gun free zone; the problem there would seem to be both the gun free zone making it a safe killing field for the perpetrator, and the laws and ethics binding shrinks may have been leaning to far towards the rights of the borderline to not be identified or treated as a nutcase.

Right in this comment stream we see jon, our own Putative Progressive, in his 426pm -“so many crimes stopped by god fearing Americans armed to the teeth, each and every day, and its because news will not report it!” Crimes stopped because news will not report it???!! To what possible logic does that man appeal in order to concoct a statement like that; and then, what possibly can it mean? Moreover, in our system such people are fully franchised voters.

How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties? “If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away”.[97]”

Caspar Milquetoast was a character in a cartoon called “The Timid Soul” that was published in newspapers beginning more than 100 years ago. The term “milquetoast” has become synonymous with “weak” and “cowardly”.
